Huckabee to Coulter: Why’d you call me stupid?

posted at 1:48 pm on January 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Again and again and again she hammered him during the primaries, and again and again he repays her here by putting her on the spot. “There’s an ugly yet fascinating dynamic brewing between these two,” I wrote in one of those old posts about the identity politics dance they were doing at the time. Watch this tango between two of the most famously nasty-yet-charming Republicans in America and tell me I was wrong.

Here’s the column in which she accused him of being pro-sodomy. Exit quotation: “Liberals adore Huckabee because he fits their image of what an evangelical should be: stupid and easily led.”

Just expressing my opinion

Gatordoug on January 11, 2009 at 3:26 PM

again — missing the point — it’s schmuck’s STATISM that is objectionable far more than his moralizing — mostly because he’s managed to conflate the worst of both!!

Buckaroo on January 11, 2009 at 3:13 PM

Huckabee is not a bad guy, he is a man of peace in a world that is not at peace. Rational people want to live in a peaceful world. Not all rational people know how to bring peace to a violent world. Rational people want everyone to have a fair chance at prosperity, not all rational people know how to bring that level playing ground to fruition.

Huckabee doesn’t want to destroy America, or make the world a more dangerous place. He just doesn’t seem to know what it takes to achieve the goals he has. Being in a position of authority the magnitude of the POTUS makes a man like Huckabee a very dangerous man. It does not make him a bad or evil man.

doriangrey on January 11, 2009 at 3:26 PM

The huckster has almost as good a shuck and jive act as the naive one.

You didn’t say Huck needs to be neutralized you said the wing of theocrats in the GOP needs to be neutralized. I didn’t take you out of context either I quoted your whole statement.

DFCtomm on January 11, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Conservatism would be a better movement without either one of them. Ugh.

Lynn2008 on January 11, 2009 at 3:34 PM

YOUR FAULT we ended up with McCAIn…YOUR FAULT and look where that got us.

You think conserative has to be country club big money—or else it ain’t conservative. Hogwash. Our founding fathers qualified as theocrtas by your strange small monded definitions. Our country is already in the handbasket towards hell and you shoot at fellow conservatives…….ignoring Reagans law.

Your argument doesn’t even make sense here. How the fu*k are we at fault for whom the RNC threw at us as the only one that was running? A fukking Rhino! We had no choice. So you think that every Conservative voted for McCain? Not in the primaries I didn’t. This wasn’t a election in case you just woke up. They had intended on giving us The One, regardless of who ran against him. McCain threw the race. He did that from day one! Huckabee is a Rhino! There is some real good things about him though. Not as POTUS. He did say the things that Ann pointed out in her book. I heard a few on TV with him saying them. You are right about Conservatives not being consistent. That is true. We need a real Conservative and not a plastic Rhino.

sheebe on January 11, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Ann is awesome. Huckabee is not a conservative neo or otherwise. His record and the video of his actions as governor prove Ann to be 100% correct, despite his best efforts to lie about what he did.

dogsoldier on January 11, 2009 at 3:37 PM

Lynn2008 on January 11, 2009 at 3:34 PM

BINGO! Because both of them put themselves above furthering Conservatism!

Kini on January 11, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Huckabee was the only candidate running for the republican nomination that was broke. He needed to stay in the race because he was living off of campaign funds. Hence we ended up with McCain. And he ended up on Fox.

meci on January 11, 2009 at 3:42 PM

doriangrey on January 11, 2009 at 3:26 PM

The Law of Unintended Consequences is many times more destructive than those that actively try to destroy something. See GWB presidency for that. He wants to do good, but ended up destroying(with active help from the demo) the economy.
Religious nannystaters often want the government to take the responsibility away from them to help their family and the poor. I think that is why so many Catholics, Jews, etc. vote democrat. But the unintentional(or in some cases intentional)consequence of a nanny state is a permanent underclass.

Corsair on January 11, 2009 at 3:43 PM

They will not even acknowledge that Huckabee confronted Ann, he was right and he was able to shut her up. They are so enamored with her they can’t see the forest for the trees. Can you say DU??

They assemble, pick up their torches and head out on their hunt.

Today it’s Huckabee, tomorrow it will be someone else in the GOP who they hate.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I acknowledge that Huck had the balls to confront Ann. But, Huck needs to be more direct when he speaks. I remember two of what Ann said he was. I heard Huck say it on TV. I think he was a tad excited and wasn’t thinking. I like Huck. Not for POTUS though. No one can dispute Ann’s research on her books. She is very thorough. It was a great debate between the two. Is how it should be done. Face to Face.

sheebe on January 11, 2009 at 3:43 PM

I’m no fan of McCain, but given the choice between RINOs (shudder), I’d still have to pick him over the Huckster. They both want open borders, but at least McShamnesty served his country and never called himself a “Christian leader”. Too bad for all of us that neither one’s a conservative.

Complaining about talking heads is like complaining about preachers. It takes different styles to bring the desired results of bring people together. And then I believe we will need the candidate and it is too soon to decided that because we don’t know what is coming.

taking away yer personal insults [which is about 80% of yer post],

My initial response to you was polite. Your response to me was an insult. I only respond with insults to people who insult me first. If you don’t like it, change your ways.

we are left with the following conclusion — u are nothing but a big hypocrite who thinks schmuck can do no wrong and are completely unable to respond with facts; for that matter, with any other than childish flames …

You really are a nut. You falsely claimed it was a scandal to destroy harddrives of gov. computers when it is not. I explained to you that it is routinely done and the reasons why it is done. So, far you have yet to respond to those facts with anything but insults and non sequitturs.

I have never commented one way or the other on Huckabee, so your claim that I think “schmuck can do no wrong” is just you making things up and then trying to use it in another personal attack. You failed, dirtbag.

Consequently, we are left with the following conclusion: You’re not right in the head.

/still waiting for an answer to the question, douche …

I can tell you the sky is green, but that won’t make it so. Huck stated she was wrong on several points, but was she? I’m not a Huck supporter, so I don’t care to find out, but if you are a supporter then why don’t you post evidence of him being taken out of context or being misquoted? He just ran for GOP nomination so most of the points in question are available on video or text.

DFCtomm on January 11, 2009 at 4:01 PM

Huckabee slobbers when he sees a liberal. With Jerry Springer he said he “hopes Obana is successful and the greatest president.”
Wow, he really defends us republicans. We want Obama to fail on the socialist policies he wants to pursue.

jencab on January 11, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Huckabee needs to do what Mitt did during the primaries: Back down as a future candidate for the good of the GOP, conservatism, and America.

Humility and loyalty are the virtues he must embrace.

(translation: the Cuda is on the rise, and you don’t want to be run over by the crusade. Oh, and if it ain’t her, then the Jindal crusade.)

Sapwolf on January 11, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Ann Coulter repeatedly calls herself a satirist. It is important to keep that in mind when viewing/reading her. A satire is…

1 : a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn
2 : trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly

I am willing to bet that those who dislike Ann tend to dislike satire in general.

Gatordoug on January 11, 2009 at 4:21 PM

They sparred over these points:

Smoking ban- He stated “I’m clarifying it now” so it wasn’t clear before?

School Choice- He supports home schooling, but not the voucher program, because of a concern about government control of parochial schools (Arkansas Times 09/22/05)

immigration- He supported instate tuition in Arkansas, and was going to clarify his position during the clip but got off topic.

Sodomy- He stated, on his monthly radio show “ask the governor” that he supported the SCOTUS decision on Lawrence V. Texas.

She said he was stupid- You will have to be the judge of whether she was right or wrong.

DFCtomm on January 11, 2009 at 4:23 PM

DFCtomm on January 11, 2009 at 4:23 PM

I think Huck is right about Lawrence V Texas. No way the government has any business snooping into anyones bedroom as long as the consenting parties are adults. Coulter saying he was pro-sodomy over that is asinine.

Gatordoug on January 11, 2009 at 4:44 PM

It,s about time someone called Huchabee out for what he realy is.A Rino Mod Rep who trys to fool people into beleaving he is a Consev.Good job Ann. Now if we could get Hannity to admit this truth. The only diff. in Huckabee & McCain is Huckabee talks better and has a T.V. show.

DFCtomm on January 11, 2009 at 4:49 PM

She over stated his position by her inane “pro-sodomy” spiel! Supporting the decision is not anywhere near the same as being pro-sodomy. I supported the ruling because I support the principle of small government, not because I approve of Homosexuality. It is just none of the government’s business. Why Huck supported it I canot say.

Wrong might be too strong, but you definitely always saw Huckabee through the Hitchens lens from day one.

I have witnessed exceptions — like the interview where Annie insisted that Canada fought alongside the U.S. in Vietnam. I was an adult in the 1970s. I knew that the correct answer was that Australia was America’s ally in Vietnam, and that draft dodgers fled to Canada. Jimmie Carter later pardoned them. She embarassed herself on that one.

My collie says:

But that’s okay — do YOU know anyone that’s right 100% of the time?

If you want to read a book that’s well researched, read Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism. Michelle Malkin is no slouch either. I wish she had more time to write books. Balancing family with blogging, writing columns, and make television appearances must be pretty overwhelming.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 7:26 PM

Having skimmed, and seen some of the names, I can run away fast from this thread.

Just wish to say, after just having watched the video, it is always stupid to ask someone “am I stupid? do I come across as stupid to you?”. What is a person to say? It’s like walking into someone’s office and asking “are you busy right now?”.

The male model of this “nasty-but-charming” duo comes across very defensively.

1. Ann is no conservative leader. She writes well and drives the left insane. That’s enough for me.

2. Mr. Huckabee can go on being an entertainer, or a preacher, or whatever he is, but should never return to the presidential scene.

Out and clear, as these threads are less interesting than the burnings on a stick in the religious threads.

Entelechy on January 11, 2009 at 7:36 PM

That took some guts and Ann has plenty of them.
I wish she had made the John McCain-Huckabee love affair more pronounced in that segment.
And…the point about Hunter endorsing Huckabee broke my heart too, but Huckleberry Hound is a bit more conservative than McAmnasty, in a greasy, stoopid, tel-evangelistic kinda way–not the way I like my conservative politicians to be.
When will he have Sarah Palin on his show? When will they cancel him? Next week wouldn’t be soon enough for me.

Huckabee made some staggering statements:

1. “I didn’t raise taxes in Arkansas” Yes you did, and furthermore, you wormed away from the subject by praising the unfair tax — I mean fairtax.
2. “I do not oppose school choice.” Actually you did.
3. “I did not support giving scholarships to illegal immigrants.” Yes you did.

And no, I am not voting for you in 2012.

It’s sort of funny to call Ann Coulter a clone of Satan, terrorists, and Pamela Anderson (she of the “suck it” comment to Palin) and then scream about hateful comments.

There’s no point in continuing. As Huck’s fellow scheizter Al Gore said, “The debate is over.” We should know better than to fan the flames of this buffoonery.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 2:09 PM

I am always interested in truth–will you please provide some specifics?

DrMagnolias on January 11, 2009 at 4:52 PM

Ms. Orit, many people here have asked for specifics, in a variety of ways. By continually ignoring such requests, you do not appear to be a person who should be taken seriously.

DrMagnolias on January 11, 2009 at 9:06 PM

Huckaliar is just that – a LIAR, and Coulter is right, every step of the way!

DrMagnolias on January 11, 2009 at 9:06 PM

So don’t take me seriously – your choice. Do you think I really care about what some Ann Coulter worshipper thinks of me? Don’t waste your time thinking about it or answering.

Thankfully Huckabee exposed her for what she is, bravo to him.

File this under ‘Facts’……..

BigWyo on January 11, 2009 at 9:15 PM

“Huckabee to Coulter: Why’d you call me stupid?”

Obviously – because she wanted her statements to be FACTUAL.

Something HUCKALIAR doesn’t ever feel the need to be concerned with……

grtflmark on January 11, 2009 at 9:16 PM

Aye, Ma’am – DISREGARDING!!!

Are you actually saying that it never happened – he didn’t confront her and correct her about what she said about him?

Ok whatever.

This is more of the same – like the thread about Philip Berg and BO’s birth certificate…(Twilight Zone theme can be heard playing in the background along with I’m In Love With Ann Coulter….)

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 9:33 PM

Is Huck gaining weight?

blankminde on January 11, 2009 at 4:16 PM

Yep. He is gaining back the weight he lost. That’s too bad.

btw, I for one have lost about 46 pounds since May of 2008, and seeing Huckabee gain his original weight back just makes me want to shake my head.

Frank T.J Mackey on January 11, 2009 at 9:39 PM

Huckabee to Coulter: Why’d you call me stupid?

If it walks like a Huck, quacks at LULAC conventions like a Huck, and takes money from Tyson Foods like a Huck, it’s probably stupid.

TMK on January 11, 2009 at 9:49 PM

That interview was a lot of fun! Both of them are part of the spice that makes conservatism interesting and entertaining, and we could use a little less of the heavy at times. Ronald Reagan had a great sense of humor, and some conservatives could use a bit more it. Nobody wants to put bitter angry people in charge of anything.

More please from both ‘em.

DaMav on January 11, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Crap, I could care less about coulter, but I care even less for the pastor. And no, I’m not anti Christian in any way.

File this under ‘Facts’?????
There fixed it for you.

By the way, is there anywhere one could look up all the abbreviations, all you guy keep using, for some of us who are text illiterate?

Bambi on January 11, 2009 at 9:53 PM

Thankfully Huckabee exposed her for what she is, bravo to him.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 9:13 PM

After reading all of the comments, and the many requests of you to provide specifics that you have ignored, I find you are as shockingly sycophantic of Huck (nearing idol worship) as many Obama voters are of The One.

It has been pointed out by several commenters that Huck lied more than once, yet you ignore that and continue to slam Coulter without providing specifics.

I think the Doc has it right, you are one not to be taken seriously.

91Veteran on January 11, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Yuckabee…you all is that backwoods Southern Lawyer Vicki Lawrence warned us about in her one-hit wonder from 1972 “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.”

And why did Ann call you stupid…CUZ Y’ALL IS, BOY!

BobAnthony on January 11, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Then you should feel really fuzzy when Obama turns this country into a communist country.

Johan Klaus on January 11, 2009 at 7:11 PM

I feel fairly certain that he will.

She is not a public servant representing the GOP, he is.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 7:17 PM

He dropped that gig quite some time ago. They’re now coworkers.

Think of her as the Far Right Wingnut version of a Jayne Mansfield or Pamela Anderson without any T & A but an Adam’s apple.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 7:26 PM

And again, do you really expect people to take you seriously here? Why not try actually debate rather than childish insults? Isn’t that the very reason you dislike Coulter, because she employs the very tactics you are using right here?

When will they cancel him?

Christine on January 11, 2009 at 7:39 PM

Honestly, I don’t even like it for the very fact that it makes a serious mockery of the “fair and balanced”. I believe they are still more centrists than most of what’s out there, but I wish they’d make a more concerted effort to prove it.

Thankfully Huckabee exposed her for what she is, bravo to him.

AprilOrit on January 11, 2009 at 9:13 PM

Considering you’re in the tank for Huck, it’s hard to consider your opinion as any more relevant than Coulter “worshipers”.

Esthier on January 11, 2009 at 10:02 PM

By the way, is there anywhere one could look up all the abbreviations, all you guy keep using, for some of us who are text illiterate?

Bambi on January 11, 2009 at 9:53 PM

I’d say Google, but I’d need a little more info on which abbreviations you’re talking about.

btw, I for one have lost about 46 pounds since May of 2008, and seeing Huckabee gain his original weight back just makes me want to shake my head.

Frank T.J Mackey on January 11, 2009 at 9:39 PM

Congrats. Keep it up (or maintain it, whichever is healthier for you).

If you can find something you enjoy, like backpacking in the mountains or Wii tennis, then it’s much easier to keep it off.

Esthier on January 11, 2009 at 10:10 PM

I can’t believe Huckabee let Coulter manhandle him like this. She got him to backtrack on several issues and “clarify”. Now it’s clear why he didn’t get closer to the nomination.

kanda on January 11, 2009 at 10:26 PM

AP, why do you guys keep feeding the troll? Seriously.

Coulter is an embarrassment to the GOP and has proven time after time that she’ll act to further her own book sales even if it costs Republicans votes by making hateful statements at GOP gatherings.

Every time HotAir covers her shenanigans you’re just making it worse. STOP FEEDING THE TROLL!

Benaiah on January 11, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Esthier: I can maybe figure out some of the short, short ones, not sure I like what I figure out, but the longer ones keep me guessing.
So if I google abbreviations should that be what I look for?
Glenn Beck had them on his web site a long tine ago, but I didn’t copy or print them.
Thanks for responding.

Bambi on January 11, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Bambi on January 11, 2009 at 10:32 PM

There are actually lists of them online (though I don’t currently have the address here on this computer).

Honestly, wikipedia.org is good, or urban dictionary, but sometimes if you just type in something like brb (be right back) in Google, you’re likely to see what it is in one of the first links.

Hope that helps. If you have a specific one, feel free to ask. I’m fairly young, but I’ve been there.

My point exactly.

She’s a bitter troll who cheapens the GOP, makes us look like nah nah – nah – nah nah childish losers.

Considering you’re in the tank for Huck, it’s hard to consider your opinion as any more relevant than Coulter “worshipers”.

Esthier on January 11, 2009 at 10:02 PM

Hilarious – now I’m in the tank for Huckabee, last week or a few weeks back you accused me of being in the tank for BO.

So which one is it??

Thanks to both of you. Have a good night.

It’s certainly possible to be both if that’s what you’re asking.

The Huckster’s stock just went up with me.

DaMav on January 11, 2009 at 9:49 PM

I would note that this last election was swept by bitter, angry, and stupid. Just sayin’ …

I think Ann Coulter is extremely intelligent and as witty as they come. She scares the living sh!t out of liberals – so much so that they won’t even dare debate her about evolution!

I like Huck a lot. He’s a great speaker, a good debater, very funny and seems like a nice guy. I just disagree with too much of his politics and I was really, really ticked off when he helped McCain cinch the primary. I don’t find him stupid, at all, though I find Ann calling him stupid to be funny .. and his asking about it even funnier.

I like Huck on TV and hope he does well enough to stay there.
