Video: Michelle rips Obama’s stimulus plan and the GOP’s complicity in it

posted at 5:45 pm on January 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

A timely clip as news breaks that Bush and Obama are hooking up to double-dip on TARP, even while 53 percent of Americans tell Gallup they’re ready for another $700 billion bite. On a related note, you’ll be pleased to know that that town in Alabama that wanted $375 million from the stimulus has quietly withdrawn its request. Some cynics perceived it as greedy, you see.

Here she is on Cavuto followed by The One speaking earlier today about how urgently dire our dire urgency is in passing the bill, a draft of which his team hopes to dump on Congress next week. Exit question: If/when blog advertising dries up later this year, which “makework job” in Obama’s WPA should I apply for? I’m thinking about pothole-filler. Out: Hot Air. In: Fresh air!

Interesting use of executive power… but so what if Bush uses his Veto? It goes back to the congress and they shut him down again?

To this question from a “subject”,

I would like to read your assessment of HO’s economic plans (skimpy as they are). So far, economists that I respect think he is way off base.

MR responded with this

Mr. Obama’s economic “plan” is to create what the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, the tax increases subsequent to the Crash of 1929 and the massive government spending in the early 1930’s created: a Great Depression. As such, it will accomplish what FDR began: the means whereby the Democrat party will control an entire nation in perpetuity by making its people utterly dependent upon the largess of the Democrats elected by the very people who depend upon them.

Thus, the NEW Lord’s Prayer upon the lips of American serfs across the nation:

Our Democrat Party, who art in Washington DC, on the ballot be thy name alone. Thy hegemony come, thy agenda be done, both nationally and locally. Give us this day our subsidies, health care and other necessities and vote to legislate us even more goodies, as we vote to return you to power again and again. Lead us not into liberty and self-sufficiency but deliver us from personal responsibility and the consequences of our own actions. For the authority, the control and the adoration of the media are yours, almighty Democrat Party, from election day to election day, unto the end of the republic. Amen

Yes, plus what the Collie said, but it’s hyped by the lefties, including the media, to excuse the welfare redistribution, to increase serfdom and dependency, which translate into votes/sustained power for the left, and to make any miniscule move upward appear as the Messiah’s doing. It’s so blatantly obvious. Only fools and blind peope in love with the One don’t see it. Unfortunately that’s most of today’s crazy socialized world.

Reagan actually ended a recession with tax cuts. But nobody with any power wants to remember that.

jimmy the notable on January 9, 2009 at 6:19 PM

this recession is demand driven. It is due to the mistaken economics taught in schools across the country. that to increase profits you must decrease supply and raise prices. the think that these great CEO’s forgot is that everytime you raise prices you destroy demand. They thought that demand is a constant. Like the AGW thought that the Sun is a constant. Both their models have proved they are wrong.

To bring back demand you must lower prices. It is as simple as 1,2,3 yet the CEO’s don’t see it. F, GM Alcoa US steel are all cutting production trying to keep prices staple as they decrease supply. This will not work because demand is not there because the price is too high.

The only way out of this recession is to decrease prices, take a lower profit on the goods and stimulate demand. Obama and Bush and washington are still trying to stimulate demand from the top down. That is folly. Prices must come down. Wlamart has been a bright spot up until now because of this. yet their prices are too high esp with food. the decrease in gasoline and no corresponding uptick in gas usage tells the tale. Consumers are tapped out. the only way they will start buying agains is when prices come down.

GM and F should be flooding the dealers with cheap cars. start selling some striopped down models for 6,000 or 7,000 just enough to turn a slight profit. and see how well sales do.

John_Locke on January 9, 2009 at 6:34 PM

when prices for cars, food, energy, steel, ect all break then and only then will the recession be over. the longer companies try to hold on too theire price points the longer and deeper the recession will be and the more they will have to cut prices in the long run. You want economic activity lower prices.

unseen on January 9, 2009 at 6:35 PM

unseen on January 9, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Mmhmm. That’s the market side. That’s why the newspapers are going under. Demand is decreasing for paper news, and there’s literally nothing they can do about it, which is why a bailout for them would be even more stupid than the other stuff. (not that all bailouts aren’t stupid, just this would be even more stupid.)

As a college student, I’m hoping the next pricing bubble to burst will be tuition, but I’m not holding my breath.

college is expensive because the gov gives pell grants, student loans etc

As far as papers? Sure there are ways to save them. One would be to write for all customers not just liberal retards. Two would be to charge less for the paper. It is hard to justify $1.00- $1.50 a day for something you may not read all of.

S on January 9, 2009 at 6:52 PM

you are missing the point. where do those salaries and union workers get their paychecks. From the students. And where do the students get their money from the gov. If not for the gov. students would not be able to afford college which means that professors and colleges would have to cut their prices to attract more demand form students which means lower prices.

But instead of doing that what happens? The dems and gov gives them more money so stuedents are not harmed.

We have been artifically increasing demand for college by allowing the gov to pay for the expense. Same goes for healthcare. The law of supply and demand has been skewed do to gov intervention.

Yeah, those are ways to save it in the short term, ways to stave off death, but there’s a reason its called the dinosaur media.

People can get all the information they need on the internet. Much more than a newspaper could ever provide.

Of course, catering to people other than high-class liberals couldn’t hurt. It would certainly increase their revenues. They really are excluding a huge part of their market. I know that if I read a website I really like, I register (for free) out of appreciation. I’m not sure if that gives them any more money, but its an effort I don’t take for websites I don’t like, like the NYT. If I come across one of those articles that requires registration, I just don’t read it.

jimmy the notable on January 9, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Yeah but think about where all the news comes from on the internet. It just doesn’t happen. you have stories written by newswires, by big newspapers like NYT, Boton Blobe Washington Post etc. These stories are spread across the internet by bloggers and news sites etc. So if you want to increase readership you need to have more reporters not less which is what the likes of NYT and CBS etc have done. Now they relie on the newswires for a great amount of thier filler. This lowers costs but it also makes the news generic and therefore makes people leave your newspapaer since your news is the same all over the place.

The newspapers have a 24 hr news cycle. that can change. They could go to “press” every 8 hours. on line and once every 24 from print. they could add extras like a week in review magizene or newsletter. There are many many ways to increase demand. But the problem is that the newspapers CEO’s like those of GM, F, Alcoa all the top american companies have forgotten the other side of the law of supply and demand. They focus just on price and supply. They do not see their own demand destruction they cause. Gm offshoring jobs hurt their demand has their workers in China and Mexico could not afford their products unlike the workers in the USa that bought a new GM car every year.

Washington and Wall Street only care about profit MARGIN. I.e the amount of profit per good produced. This is the wrong way to look at it and has lead us to this place and this time.

I live in a town that thinks Obama will save the world, along with my mother and her boyfriend. The job market is also bad as we are a tourist town. When folks to do not have money, they do not travel or spend money here.

So many people I talk to and hear talking think Obama is going to save us. What gets my goat, they sit around and complain, put the blame on everyone, will not listen to any other side but their own, and wait for the governments help. And it is all the republicans fault!

If you do not have satellite here you get NBC and maybe CBS if you are lucky to live on a hill with a mile high antenna. A few years ago I was one of those who also only listen to NBC and put the blame on all others. I am so glad I was not brain washed.

I guess the point I am trying to make is, I am glad we have folks like Michelle, like you all here. Who will stand up for the truth, and try to get the word out about how bad the MSM really is in only reporting what they want to. And how bad they bash the others who do not hold the same views they do.

We are about to usher in an administration which is the most corrupt in American history even before they take office. The voice of the people is the only thing that will check this theft and attempt at creating a permanant Democrat supermajority through radical change resulting in complete dependency on the government.

Sites like HA will be a valuable tool until Obama and the Congress shuts them down for subversion to the administration’s propaganda. Trust me the day will come when HA will be silenced by Obama and Ed/Michelle will be in some sort of litigation (if not incarcerated at GITMO) Allah will probably be OK since he has a long record of hating evangelical and social conservatives.

wonder who your Hoover-FDR era equivalent was and what they were saying.

sethstorm on January 9, 2009 at 6:10 PM

How long was Hoover’s Depression? A year or so until FDR replaced him? How long was FDR’s Depression? How many years did you say? And it probably would have gone on longer if war preparation hadn’t created jobs.

Not me. I’m going to start a corporation, (only on paper), and then sell all of the carbon shares I’m not using to make a killing. I can’t wait for the checks to start rolling in!

First of all, it is not the WPA — its the BPA (Blog Posting Authority) to which you will apply. You must fill out and submit a Form 911, which will be provided on the BPA’s website (http://911.change.gov/) in Microsoft .doc format (as partial repayment for Bill Gate’s support of Obama during the election). The form will contain your identity information, including a credit card number into which BPA will either deposit funds (if you are pro-Obama) or from which it will debit them (if you are not and the program runs out of money). The submittal process will require you to obtain a Twitter account so you can submit the form to the designated Blog Officer (B.O.).

All applicants will be required to adhere strictly to a Fairness Doctrine which will require each blogger (except Keith Olbermann, who will be specially protected by an addendum to the ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] from having to do anything which would increase the unhealthful flow of saliva from his face) to provide posts which adequately address all sides of a blogged issue. The FBI will be tasked, as its new primary duty, with assuring strict compliance with this rule.

The Government will also be setting up a new award for blogging integrity called the Blogo. The award will be given on the TV station in Illinois which pays the most money to host the show, based on a government auction. That TV station will also be allowed to choose the recipient; the putative recipients will be allowed to contribute to the station during the competition, since the award is f***ing valuable.

The issue is that Mr. Galt will be found and captured too easily.

you’ll see she’s been closer to reality than the group think of the econo-expert-elite.

Border control, yes – where I don’t disagree with her.
Economy, not so much – her opinions on the economy seem to contradict her beliefs on border control.

My opinion here is that the GOP is just waiting for a good moment to reverse course – and just wants to push things along – without being called on it.

Yes and the more gov “helps” with college expense the more college costs. which means the more students “need” gov to get to school. You want to reduce college costs cut out gov. sure many students will not be able to go to school but the costs will come down. Added plus would be many liberal idiots out of a job.

There are many students who go to college to keep from going to work. These people use grants and loans (other peoples money)to get degrees that are useless once they graduate. They should go out into the world and do some of the jobs ‘that americans won’t do’ and grow up enough to figure out what actual degree would suit them in a productive society. And the sooner they spend time earning a living and paying taxes the sooner they are more likely to become conservative. (It worked with my daughters)

In one place she defends securing the border, yet has economic beliefs that would allow that effort to be undermined.

One place being the Dubai Ports issue, where her opposition ran counter to “free market” beliefs.

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;

2. From spiritual faith to great courage;

3. From courage to liberty;

4. From liberty to abundance;

5. From abundance to complacency;

6. From complacency to apathy;

7. From apathy to dependence;

8. From dependence back into bondage

What stage are we in?

Number 7

Entelechy on January 9, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Yeah, #7 sounds about right I’m afraid.

I’ve done what I can to keep my country great and safe. I vote. I served in the military. I pay my taxes. I live within my means. I think of myself as a productive and law abiding citizen, a good American. I defend our traditions and values as have so many other fine Americans. Yet, despite all that, I feel as if our nations greatness is slipping away. I want to help my country but our govt seems hell bent on destroying it.

Yakko77 on January 9, 2009 at 11:05 PM

A timely clip as news breaks that Bush and Obama are hooking up to double-dip on TARP, even while 53 percent of Americans tell Gallup they’re ready for another $700 billion bite.

This makes me think of a survey that was done years ago with people who had back pain.

Mean time for back pain to go away with a doctor – 6 months.
Mean time for back pain to go away with a chiropractor – 6. months.
Mean time for back pain to go away if you just let your back get better on it’s own – 6 months.

This last option though has the distinct advantage of not putting you even deeper in debt.

I’ll be most happy when Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alaska, Louisiana and a few other oil producing or refining states or other states that are fed up with the socialism that’s being shoved down our throats just say f it. We’re out of here. We’re going to something akin to the Fair Tax or a flat tax or something. The legislature will meet every other year and the top of the agenda will be defense and that’s just about it.

You keep your highway funds, SS, Medicare, your over bearing government that wants to control every part of our daily lives, etc. and we’ll stop sending federal taxes back to DC and stop joining the military. At least 1 fully automatic M16 will be mandatory in every home of law abiding adults.

By the way, we’re drilling anywhere and everywhere and building some nuke power plants and more oil refineries and to hell with the western-spotted-spooky-salamander.

Good luck.

sethstorm on January 9, 2009 at 9:37 PM

The free market has to be tempered by national security concerns, of course. We had restrictions against sending computers and such to the U.S.S.R., but that doesn’t mean the policy was anti-capitalist. Quite the contrary.

FloatingRock on January 10, 2009 at 12:17 AM

Republicans have basically been Democrat light on spending over the past eight years. Kind of hard to be the party of fiscal responsibility when you’ve spent like drunker sailors and the national debt has sky rocket on your watch.

It’s the right move, but it’s going to take a while for Republicans to get their good name back. Personally, I believe there should NEVER been a year where Republicans control Congress where the budget isn’t balanced.

Being the party to outlaw pork barrel projects would be a good start too.

“The only power we have is the power to say no” – Albert Camus

The world has had worthless money since Nixon finished the decoupling of the US currency from gold. Most of the bad times since then were reactions to the Fed and World Banks shenanigans and the “good” times were false reactions to government inflating the money supply and artificially lowering interest rates.

This road to a planned economy using corporations leads to fascism, a system that cannot last no more than other forms of socialism can.

Your government is about to take all your money and transfer it to Washington where they will control it! You won’t…they will…! If you support this you are a moron! You are being robbed by a massive transfer of wealth which will bankrupt this country!

sabbott on January 10, 2009 at 7:28 AM

I hope you folks are ready for the day when the world drops the greenback as Reserve Currency. It is coming sooner than you think. The debased dollar will be replaced and our baby steps into bondage will be a Great Leap Forward.

I need a government bailout to re-inflate my IRA. It wasn’t doing to well anyway, so I am thinking I only need $1 billion.
