Video: John Ziegler and David Shuster yell at each other over Palin

A screaming match for your Friday afternoon entertainment. Shuster’s numbers are off, but not by much: It was 59 percent who thought she was unqualified to be VP, not 65.
Ace is right about the Palin interview, incidentally. Grievance is an unappealing quality in a politician, especially one whose media opportunities would be better spent showing off her policy chops ahead of 2012. She has endless surrogates willing to complain about the coverage on her behalf; doing it herself plays well with the base but at the price of diminishing her. Ironically, she herself once warned Hillary not to be perceived as a whiner. Funny what a campaign can do.
Which is not to suggest that she’s blowing smoke. Via Gateway Pundit, here’s the latest from the Anchorage Daily News. They’re still pursuing the “Trig is really Bristol’s son” smear.

Doesn`t Ziegler know defending Palin is racist?
ThePrez on January 9, 2009 at 2:48 PM
over/under 300 comments.
I usually don’t bother to read these threads since I hate how nasty it gets.
Palin is 35 years old and a natural born citizen.
She’s qualified.

Independent Shuster is a Townhouse emailer or in constant contact with the independent and unbiased left blogs like Firedoglake.
Palin – You betcha!
Princess Dipshit – You know?

Also, she is more than qualified for the difficult job of not getting recognized at movie theaters.
jimmy the notable on January 9, 2009 at 2:52 PM
You’re confusing “eligible” and “qualified.” She wasn’t. But I do love ONE thing she has pointed out. The media is definitely classist and their treatment of Kennedy demonstrates it. But isn’t conservatism all about not engaging in class warfare?
Regardless, it’s not the media’s fault Palin was uninformed about things a VEEP should be informed about, period.
DeathToMediaHacks on January 9, 2009 at 2:53 PM
I agree you don’t want to seem like you care too much what the MSM thinks, AP, but the problem a lot of us had with the Bush administration was they never fought a damn thing… and narratives started to form (i.e., Bush “lied” about Iraq to “rush us” into war; the Bush WH outed super-perfect “spy” Valerie Plame, etc). I think their thinking was to just let talk radio/conservative media to pick up the slack, but that doesn’t always work– sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand yourself.
Yes, Palin shouldn’t “whine” (and I don’t think she was here), but calling the MSM — who were on a search-and-destory mission for her– out is warranted– and can be inspiring to the base. I think it’s good for the pols themselves to fight back from time to time, and, like I said, not just leave it to radio and the blogs to throw the spears.

And Barry was qualified to be POTUS? how?

Shuster needs a good ol fashion drubbing. I don’t watch anything associated with NBC so the only time I see this tool is on this site and NewsBusters and I end up wanting to make him cry and run home to momma! He annoys me more than Olberdoche.
dmann on January 9, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Shuster got his butt handed to him and I bet after that segment, he was breaking his arm in congratulating himself on how HE owned Ziegler. “Journalists” like Shuster just can’t (or won’t) see how much in the tank they were for Obama and how much venom they spewed at Palin.
Torch on January 9, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Yeah, David Shuster, David Frum and Ace of Spades are such well-known, high integrity, unbiased sources for things.
Give it a bloody rest, AP.
You know, I have been largely absent from Hot Air for a few weeks, and coming back on today has made me realize why. (No peanut gallery comments, please).
I think I’m going back off. Ciao.

I can’t believe our Sarah is taking on the media all by herself without me.
Damn it woman! Let your Feydakin like Sapwolf bring it on them. Don’t give me a pink slip. :(
I enjoy her Mommabear qualities.
I’ll disagree with AP a little on this one. The record should be fixed, and now that she has brought it up and passed the torch to Zeigler, she can let the hair on her back settle back.
The fact that they still get calls on the whole issue of Trig is sick and an embarrasment to this country. Maybe getting Obama is what we deserve. We in this country can be dispicable. I see it on the right side too but not anywhere near in number and viciousness.

Obama demands the media consider his kids and wife off limits even though she’s fully involved in the campaign and that’s OK but the insane attacks on Palin and her family who are barely included in the campaign go through the roof?
That’s not whining that’s laying it out for jackasses.

The only way a conservative wins the White House again is by running against the media or neutralizing it somehow (i.e., by exposing its basis in a dramatic way a la Rathergate). The bias is too far gone now, to the point that a nobody like Joe the Plumber becomes a celebrity just because he asks the only hard question Obama ever faced on his way to the White House.
What Palin says now is largely irrelevant, it will be forgotten. The question will be whether 4-8 years of extreme economic pain and international humiliation under Obama is enough to break through the constant media cheerleading. We’ll seee.
blue13326 on January 9, 2009 at 3:03 PM
The link to the ADN that you provide makes it extremely clear that the paper isn’t “pursuing” the smear; the editor clearly states that the rumors are nutty nonsense, and that they were interested in writing a story to completely put it to rest. Why would you characterize that as “pursuing” the smear?
That being said, I don’t see much value in such a story anyway, and if Bristol recently giving birth for real (just 8 months after Trig!) doesn’t convince a crazy conspiracy theorist, I don’t think anything will.
tneloms on January 9, 2009 at 3:03 PM
My God, I hope for the sake of the Republican party that no one takes the opinion of Allah. This is the same crap liberals have been telling us for years. “Don’t confront the media.” “Don’t talk about media bias.” “Just take it and move on”
Oh yes, let’s have a John McCain redo. Let’s try and be buddies with the NY Times! This is the kind of advice that has us in this position in the first place. Can we please get some fresh blood breathing into these campaigns instead of the same ole “let’s play nice with the media crap.”
By Allah’s standards, Palin should have never ever challenged a Republican incumbent or blew the whistle on unethical members of her own party.
Ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Be quiet Sarah, you’re making too many waves!

As conservatives we DON’T engage in class warfare. Why do you think there is so much bitterness towards the Noonan/Frum/Parker/Brooks/RINO axis? Because they engage in class warfare within the party.

No, Ace is wrong. The election is still fresh. She was given an opportunity to get it off her chest and people wanted to know what she had to say about it. Twisting this into some sort of grievance fest is dishonest.
Funny coming from someone who presented her in the most biased of ways and complained when readers pointed it out. And what’s this diminishes her crap? You mean with the east coast pundit snobs who can’t stand her no matter what she does? Oh, noes!!1!!!
She’s given an opportunity to speak up for herself, and she is immediately labeled a whiner by people who have never campaigned or ran a campaign (Ace) and a person who is known for doing quite a bit of whining himself (You).

When Sarah yammers on and on in interview after interview, about the corrupt media, then I’ll concede that she’s whining. Having a credible opportunity to air those questions out and speak her mind is refreshingly honest and candid. Yet more qualities that I admire in her.
She keeps reaffirming how qualified she truly is.

You are probably right that AP doesn’t like Sarah Palin. After all, she’s a real woman and not at all like the vaccuous plastic whores that northeastern libs gravitate towards. But I don’t think that’s why he posts his witless comments about her. He’s just stirring the pot. Cut him some slack. I don’t think he’d recognize an Alaskan if they came gift-wrapped in baby seal fur with a chunk of glacier.

Sapwolf on January 9, 2009 at 3:13 PM
It’s pretty obvious Shuster never watched the Youtube video. He just received his DNC(aka media) talking points and conducted the “interview” based on that. The moment Ziegler called him on it, he knew he was screwed and just engaged in a shouting match to divert attention from that fact.
I’m glad to see Ziegler ripping him apart though. Everyone in the conservative movement and the GOP needs to treat the media(save for FoxNews) this way. They’re a hit squad for the Democrat Party. Approach them with this mindset. They’re not your friend. They will never like you, respect you, or agree with you on anything.
Ziegler and Coulter need to be the template for conservative interviews from this point on. This is a war. We need to start acting like it.

Allah,
Comparing Palin’s treatment to Hillarys is apples to oranges and it’s not even close. People were and are going after this woman’s family. Just think about that. Shuster said something a bit silly about Chelsea Clinton and almost lost his job. People are clapping on TV shows and ridiculing her daughter! What is she suppose to do? They are question the legitimace of her last baby. How is she suppose to feel?
This isn’t an issue of them talking about her. They are going after he family.
As Palin herself stated, come after me no problem but the attacks on her family has cross a disgusting line.

Normally I would agree with this, except that I really like that this was done for a documentary to make a case against the media. My vote would have been for Ziegler to NOT release what she had to say on YouTube, and save it for when the documentary releases. This would allow for some distance between what happened and gives us all a chance to see it with fresh eyes and ears.

The ADN’s spinning it. The editor may have had decent intentions (I’m not actually buying that either), but their reporter was looking to push Trig Trutherism not dispel it. She called Palin’s dad and basically flat out accused Palin of faking her pregnancy. See here if you’d like to hear that from Mr. Heath’s own mouth (it’s in the Jan. 6th podcast at about the 2hr and 40min mark).

I think that if Palin wants to talk about the media campaign from 2008, now is the right time. If she is still talking about it in Iowa and New Hampshire in 2011, that is a problem.
If she gets this kind of interview out of the way now, future interviews can focus on policy issues and the like.

Unfrickinbelievable!! Shuster calls himself a “journalist.” What a joke. Hannity is right that 2008 is the year that journalism officially died. Shuster’s disdain for Palin couldn’t have been more transparent. It’s ironic that MSNBC goes on and on about how Palin is unqualified to be VP, yet can’t acknowledge that Obama isn’t qualified to be VP or POTUS.
Callie C. on January 9, 2009 at 3:20 PM
You people that keep saying she was unqualified have no idea what the qualifications a VICE President should have!!!
Doing the job of Vice President is not fvckin’ rocket science. You need to know how to read legalese bullsh-t and understand it. She’s a governor, she already does that. She needs to comprehend how the government works. She’s done that too. She needs skills like taking bribes, going on junkets, and greasing palms. She’s probably done that too. Is she an economic genius? No. But that’s why president’s hire consultants. Is she a foreign policy genius? She know’s the difference between good and evil. That’s more than enough. What she doesn’t know, is to speak with a Manhattan elite snobbishness, so dickwads like Schuster will pay attention to her substance. I like her genuineness and honesty. The media put her and her family through the ringer. All she did was point that out. And she is damn right she has a reason to be angry about it. Btw, anything Allahpundit says about her is irrelevent.
Andy in Agoura Hills on January 9, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Allah seems to like being bunched with Frum, Noonan, and Brooks. Looks like Ace has gone to the dark side apparently.
Ziegler should laugh off not believe whatever Schuster claims Sarah said because it is always going to be a lie and nonsensical out of that dummy’s mouth. Schuster was disputing the word “assassinate.” What the hell is wrong with that fool? Typical liberal. They can’t fight on the issues so they have to go on some idiotic diatribe off-topic.
How anybody can take MSDNC anchors seriously is beyond me.
jencab on January 9, 2009 at 3:22 PM
The double standards at MSNBC are incredible. Somehow a woman who was a Mayor and a Governor of America’s largest state is unqualified to be Vice President, but a woman with zero political experience is qualified to be the next New York Senator and a man with zero intelligence experience is qualified to be the next head of the CIA.

I think Allah owes Palin (and even to Hotair readers here) an apology for jumping the band-wagon by continually to psuedo-attack (if that’s a word) her by saying that she is “whining” or “complaining” on how the media attacked her family. Allah, Palin made it clear. She said, “Attack me…” and not her family. Or did you forget, Allah? Is it not imperative to go after the MSM and their ilks (liberal “journalists”, etc) for not adhering to journalistic standards? Why do you continually “attack” Palin in such a surreptitious and subtle way ever since Palin came on board? What are you? A closeted misogynist?
Kokonut on January 9, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Coupla random thoughts
First of all, I’m going to print up a couple of pics of David “Metrosexual” Shuster and use them to line the bottom of the chicken house.
I think that given the context of the documnetary, Sarah was well within her rights to expose the media. It goes back to some hazy memories from college business classes about the types of authority.. ie. positional authority.. “We are the media therefore you should believe us”
People seem to think that the media is failproof (not most of us here, but boobus americanus).. We need to chip some pieces off the facade of the media.
As others have pointed out, the media generates perception. About the only hope for our republic is to try to negate the lamestream media and replace it with something else.. Not sure what though..
Anyway, Schuster needs some serious smirk removal. Perhaps ten minutes in a room with Todd Palin would do.
Also, by the tone of Shyster’s flatulent like utterings, I’m supposing he thinks mr junior senator, I voted present IS qualified. No wonder republics only last 300 years or so.
bullseye on January 9, 2009 at 3:27 PM
The reason that Palin did this interview was because this guy is making the documentary Media Malpractice. That’s why she’s talking about this still. Yes, she has probably moved on some, but Zeigler’s doc covers the Election 2008!
ivybelle1 on January 9, 2009 at 3:28 PM
That’s pretty much how I feel too. I’ve gone back and forth on it, but I think she needed to have her say and try to correct the record. She’s laid it all out here (in an appropriate forum). If she’s still talking about it four years from now then I think that’s a problem. Her CPAC speech will probably be a good forum for her to put the campaign behind her and get some issue based coverage, and I hope she takes it. And I agree with latinchic on the release of the footage. I would have preferred that Ziegler wait until the documentary comes out to release this footage.

It’s tempting to suggest that the election of Barack Obama, under-achieving community organizer, or the distinct lack of outrage over Princess Caroline’s wafer-thin resume would make questions about Sarah Palin’s qualifications seem absurd… but alas, we all know how… supple the media can be about such things. Even if Obama found a liberal, moose-hunting former beauty queen from Alaska and made her Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the exact same “Palin is unqualified” meme would lurch along, like something out of a George Romero movie: plodding and unkillable.
For the conservative-leaning commenters who fret that she’s unqualified, I would submit the relevant question is: Will the voters of 2012 believe she is qualified? They were obviously made comfortable with Obama’s ridiculous resume, and convinced to ignore such important data points as the degenerate condition of the “community” he “organized,” which is like the Gaza Strip except with fewer rocket launchers and more $200,000.00 gazebos.
Obviously Palin will not have a fawning media assuring the voters she’s a Lightworker – quite the opposite. It’s a fair point to worry that she’ll give them the kind of openings she gave them in 2008, and we can rest assured the incredibly lax employment standards extended to Obama will be greatly tightened up in her case, possibly to standards George Washington would have difficulty meeting.
The important question is, will Palin be better prepared for them, and able to move the national conversation beyond questions of her resume? I think the early signs are encouraging, and she’s got a couple of years to win you over, if you’re winnable. It will certainly help that she won’t be forced to learn and repeat the policy positions of John McCain, which is something even John McCain wasn’t terribly good at.
Doctor Zero on January 9, 2009 at 3:34 PM
If Palin the governor isn’t qualified, then Obama the “community organizer” sure as hell isn’t qualified. Thanks, libs, for helping to drive that one home.
commenter on January 9, 2009 at 3:34 PM
I don’t think a “bubblehead” can become a governor but smarts, common sense and good work ethics helped. Obama fails all three and should be more apt to be the one called “bubble-uh-head.”
Kokonut on January 9, 2009 at 3:35 PM
If advertisers and money raked in on HA has anything to do with post count, page bounce, or whatever, then HotAir, Michelle, Ed, and even you AllahP owe Palin an amount of credit for getting interest in this site.
Or, maybe we give AP credit for training us and giving us more blog time in practicing our defense and counterattacks on those who are out to destroy the Cuda for prepping the future.

If you believe in American exceptionalism, that the individual is more important than the state, that gun owner’s rights are guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment, and that the Constitution and its Amendments are inviolable then you probably are or will become a Sarah Palin supporter. But if you are a radical Marxist socialist, believe that America is morally corrupt and blatantly racist, that the state can do no wrong if it implements policies for ‘protecting the public’ and for ‘the collective good’, wants to ensure that individual citizens do not own or use guns and that the Constitution is a flawed document that needs to be overhauled and transformed then you will never vote for Sarah and probably want to see her thrown into a concentration or re-education camp.

It’s not her fault, but Palin is becoming a very divisive candidate for the Republican Party. While it is going to be tough enough to beat Obama in 2012, it will be impossible if we have a candidate that polarizes her own party. It’s ironic how John McCain, who was not the first choice of many party conservatives (whether they were financial conservatives or religious conservatives), may have done the party more damage by ruining one of its up-and-coming superstars by picking her for V.P. before she was ready to run on the national stage.

Quote of the Day:
“I met Richard John Neuhaus only a couple of times, but he took the second occasion to tell me to my face, with his clerical collar on, that I was “objectively disordered”. I remember this rather well because we were in an elevator at the time and I didn’t quite know where to look.”
Andrew “The Sarah Palin Vagina Monlogues” Sullivan
Somehow, assuming this is true, I doubt Father Newhouse’s comment was over Sullivan being homosexual, but being “Sullivan.” As a former fan of Sully, I was shocked how quick he could attack Palin, not on her qualifications (I disagree but fair enough), but on this whole Baby Trig Trutherism, without even batting an eye about the hypocrisy of the whole thing. The over the top viciousness of that attack was incredible.

Actually, no. Since Allahpundit cannot bring himself or herself to publicly sign his/her name to his/her work I think we can assign “gutless” as an insight to his/her heart and soul.
BigD on January 9, 2009 at 3:39 PM
Hey Andy, I mean Allahpundit.
I like you better as the Ombudsman on Red Eye. At least Greg can slap you around when you get stuck on stupid. I don’t quite think Ed’s up to that task yet.

If one thing is correct. MSMBC is a Joke
Kini on January 9, 2009 at 3:41 PM
Wanna know what’s really apalling?
Trig and Bristol both will carry that smear with them to the grave. It will be in both their obits, “Trig Palin, son of famed Sarah Palin passed away…
…rumors abounded until his death that he was really the illigitimate son of Bristol, his sister…”
That is what today’s MSM legacy really is.
catmman on January 9, 2009 at 3:44 PM
Nope. I’m sure he meant it for something other than homosexuality, but ALSO a secondary reference to Sully’s homosexuality.
The one word as a Catholic I hear a lot about how to describe homorsexuality and gay people who think it is cool to practice it is “disordered“.
When Sully is in an elevator with the giant Neuhaus, the light from the latter can’t help but singe and expose the bankruptcy of the former.

Allah, why don’t u like Governor Palin?
please answer why.
Her critics say she’s unqualified and point to the Couric and Gibson interviews, but they don’t point to the Biden debate and other interviews she perform well. i agree it does not help her to bash the media but
the whole point of the Ziegler/Palin interview was to show
the bias of peolple in the media like couric and Gibson and
shuster even Am I and Denis Miller the only two people in the world who feels that COuric made her look bad on purpose.
60% thought she was unqualified after the COuric interviev while she is already the frontrunner for Republican nomination

And in thinking about such shameful behavior in our country, I sometimes relish in the thought of a 100-mile wide meteor hitting earth and sending it back to the cockroaches to await another few million years to see what pops up under the Lord’s blueprint.

Right now the entire party is in turmoil, not because of Palin but because of losing two consectutive election cycles. In the rush to figure out what to do to right the ship, there are at least a dozen people who are dividing the party. That is not on Palin.
She has not been making pronouncements about who should lead the party or who should be kicked out of the party or who should be courted into the party. She’s gone back to governing and had some points about the new administration and then this interview for the documentary, but she is not dividing the party. There are people who are using her as a dividing line, but she is not the one doing it.

It is appalling. McCain’s youngest daughter Googled herself one day and found all the smears from the 2000 SC primary right? They had planned to sit her down and talk to her about it, but she found it online first. *shakes head in sadness*

What about Obama the Senator? Using such obvious false dichotomies does not help your case.
Sure, one would expect that either a Senator or a Governor could show that they have the chops to become President one day. The surprise was when it became evident that Palin was not prepared (and probably will never be prepared) to become President. If McCain had taken a closer look at her beforehand, he might have seen it. Instead, he trusted a recommendation passed along by a few bloggers. D’oh!

Schuster just does’nt understand the concept of “character assassination” , how stupid can a man get.
the_nile on January 9, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Call her anything , she’s more prepared than Obama.
the_nile on January 9, 2009 at 3:55 PM
Wow. I just watched the clip for the first time and I have to say that Shuster’s bias comes through nicely. Ziegler handled him nicely.

B. Schnookems, please tell us all what BO did as a Senator?
upinak on January 9, 2009 at 3:56 PM
Not quite, “Big” S. It was Palin alone that routed most conservative to their feet in support of her rather than McCain per se. McCain’s name alone leaves a bad taste in most conservative mouths. Not prepared? Have you NOT looked at Obama?
sheesh…

Lies, damn lies, and statistics… Yes, Alaska is the largest state by land area, but it has only 670,000 inhabitants–the size of DC. Is Marion Barry qualified to be Vice President on account of his having held the highest executive office in a political subdivision of equal population?
Further, there are 50 sitting governors in the U.S. (soon to be 49), and roughly half are Republicans. Can it seriously be suggested that she was the most qualified among them? What about Pawlenty? And what about all the former Republican governors, like Romney and Ehrlich?
As Obama said in his rallies, “this isn’t about me; this is about you”–quit deflecting. Obama and Biden are unqualified, and Kennedy’s bid is indefensible, but that does not per se make Palin’s nomination a good idea. Yes, everyone in the media hates her, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong to do so; it just means they’re bad journalists. Palin’s merits (or lack thereof) are the issue. “I know you are but what am I?” might have worked on Pee Wee’s Playhouse, but it won’t win you a political argument.

Ziegler was just on with Norah O’Donnel and he was just as good.
