Terrific: Caroline’s qualified and experienced, says … Palin

posted at 4:15 pm on January 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not since my beloved boss dumped on atheists has there been heart-ache such as this.

Working moms have to look out for each other, I guess.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin expressed displeasure Friday with media reports of her recent comments about Caroline Kennedy.

“I was not commenting at all on Caroline Kennedy as a prospective U.S. senator, but rather on the seemingly arbitrary ways in which news organizations determine the level and kind of scrutiny given to those who aspire to public office,” Palin said. “In fact, I consider Ms. Kennedy qualified and experienced, and she could serve New York well.”

In an interview with conservative filmmaker John Ziegler for his coming move “How Obama Got Elected,” posted on YouTube on Wednesday, Palin said that Kennedy has gotten softer treatment in the press because of a “class issue.”

This may be the first thing she’s said for which she’ll get significant pushback from the base. Presumably she feels obliged to rubber-stamp Princess because her own VP resume was thin, but that concedes a point most conservatives refuse to concede — namely, that her two years as governor don’t count for much as a qualification for federal office, or at least for not much more than 51 years as an heiress to Camelot do. She has to tread lightly because of the gender politics involved, but if anything, Palin should be leading the charge in demanding that Caroline win an election somewhere before inheriting her senatorial birthright. Exit question for the ‘Cuda: How, exactly, is she qualified and experienced?

Example #493262 of Why Democrats Want to Keep Sarah Palin in the National Spotlight.

benny shakar on January 9, 2009 at 5:47 PM

At first I was disappointed to hear this from Palin. But she did give credit to HRC for the cracked glass ceiling. Whatever. The question of a qualified Kennedy is sort of rhetorical anyway. The members of the Senate aren’t exactly known for their intellectual prowess. That’s why their hearings are so annoying and pompus. Having 2 of their own running for President this year was expecially egregious. Sarah Palin should never go anywhere near that place.

hanzblinx on January 9, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Come on guys look at the other senators. Babs Boxer, who is senile. Larry Craig wasn’t the sharpest pencil in the box.

I could go on, but you get the idea. I think Sarah got it right, we want “non-career politicians” in office. Caroline qualifies for that.

And while she may not be a rocket scientist, few of those guys are.

CrazyGene on January 9, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Sarah Palin isn’t the answer we’ve been looking for. I want her to be, but she ain’t.

Wyznowski on January 9, 2009 at 5:54 PM

And besides, there won’t be anyone goodin that seat.

CrazyGene on January 9, 2009 at 5:55 PM

I might agree with her had I not read that there were so many other, more experienced, better qualified candidates available in New York. But since there are, it’s clear that the Kennedy name is what counts here. However, what ever one thinks about Sarah’s remarks concerning Kennedy, she is, as usual, true to herself and damn the torpedoes. It’s one of her best qualities as I see it.

jeanie on January 9, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Oh get over it folks. There’s something to be said for having some incompetent Senators here and there, particularly from big states. You don’t have to make a fool out of them (or their party), they do just fine all by themselves.

Arthur C Clarke wrote a SciFi book a while back about a world where people were chosen by lottery of the general population to fill the various ‘elected’ positions in government.

The political reality of political bodies is the competant will come to the top to take charge, whether that’s one or several. The rest can be doofuses, the more the merrier since they won’t get in the way too much.

As far as Democrats go, this is probably becoming the operative system for choosing candidates. They’ve got Franken, soon to be a clown yes man. There’s Obama, whose expertise seems to be he’ll make a great spokesman for the Clinton White House team. Most deep voiced actor from Hollywood who can read a teleprompter could probably do Obama’s job. So what the problem with an incompetant Kennedy in the mix?

Dritanian on January 9, 2009 at 6:04 PM

This just goes to show you. As much as I like Palin she is playing this victim card a bit too much and is not ready for prime time. Sweet woman but a bit too politically correct for what I want in Washington. She needs to kick Kennedy in the throat with her comments. Princess Caroline is not qualifed and Palin needs to be forthcoming.

grdred944 on January 9, 2009 at 6:07 PM

I’ll agree that Palin spoke out of common courtesy, toward someone who appeared to bear her no ill will. We all say things we wish we’d never said. This will probably be one of those moments. I don’t think the press will let her off though, like they would for, say, the really dumb things Joe Biden says on a regular basis.

manwithblackhat on January 9, 2009 at 6:08 PM

I don’t agree with her, but I also don’t really care that she said it. It would be a tough life if I went around having heart attacks every time a politician said one thing I disagree with. There are so few politicians I like. Palin is one I do like. I think I can pick my battles.

athenanyc on January 9, 2009 at 6:10 PM

If Palin had said Caroline was an unqualified legacy hack, Allahpundit, would’ve bashed her for being an uncouth backwoods hairy-armpit gal who stupidly gave the Democrats and the MSM more “red meat”.

So when Palin (according to “The Politico” — a prime source for unbiased news) stepped over that particular land mine Allahpundit throws his own grenade at her.

Great job, AP. When conservatives have friends like you they don’t need enemies.

Tinian on January 9, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Look, Palin’s right. My objections to Caroline Kennedy aren’t so much about her being unqualified as they are about the rampant hypocrisy of Sarah Palin being trashed whilst Caroline Kennedy gets lauded.

Face it, that Senate isn’t exactly chock full of geniuses.

AP – being in the Obama bag, what don’t you get? Of course Caroline is qualified to be in the Senate. I mean, come on, it’s the Senate, for Allah’s sake! Not like being qualified for the presidency.

Oh, wait, my bad. Obama was a senator. But then again, he did have 82 days experience, more than enough for weasel-lying back-stabbing commies to learn the ins-and-outs of subverting Liberty.

LIberty is dead, get over it.

wise_man on January 9, 2009 at 6:24 PM

Great political masterstroke. If the MSM knocks her for her assessment of Caroline then they’re offending Obama for having her as part of the team heading the VP search and many Democrats who fawn over anybody with the Kennedy brand name, but if they agree with Sarah then they legitimize Sarah because Sarah is way more qualified than Caroline based on her resume. Either way Sarah wins.

technopeasant on January 9, 2009 at 6:39 PM

This is one woman reaching out to another. For Sarah to waste political capital on attacks on Caroline would be foolish and self-destructive.

Palin is not Ann Coulter, although I’m in love with both.

Honestly, Carloline is qualified because she only has to proxy her votes to Chuckie boy in NY. The qualifications she has already met: secular urban leftist elitist Kennedy. Done.

Sarah is right on. Caroline is OK as a NY Senator it appears to Dems.

Way to go Dr. Palin, another excellent diagnosis.

Sapwolf on January 9, 2009 at 6:46 PM

So she’s being polite. Like it would make any difference if she did rip into Caroline? You have to choose your battles and pointing out the double standard without craping on Kennedy IMO has more potential for persuading people.

aikidoka on January 9, 2009 at 6:46 PM

Allah, there you go again. Subtle bashing on Palin or not-so-subtle on her “lack” of political experience that would not qualify her to be VP or POTUS.

Once for all, Allah, please tell to the Hotair readers exactly what it would take for Palin to be qualified to be POTUS since you have never once even bothered to exclusively point them out for us HA readers. Certainly Palin’s political resume is certainly much thicker than Caroline’s. No?

That was my point too. I cared about the hypocrisy of saying Caroline was qualified but Palin wasn’t.

I even felt sorry about the “you know” verbal tick. Tammy Bruce gave a good case for Caroline, and I largely agreed with it.

AP – perhaps Palin came to the conclusion that Caroline is qualified and experience after reading the NY Times! Get those newspapers out of her hands!

BetseyRoss on January 9, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Even though I was not disappointed, I agree with most of what you are saying.

Even as a conservative woman myself, I would encourage the appointment of Kennedy. It is politically smart.

I am guessing that Allahpundit is just trying to start something here.

The base is not going anyway and I am pretty certain that Allahpundit knows this. After all, the social conservative base did not run screaming away from Sarah because of a pregnant teenage daughter.

The media is trying to take the statements Sarah made and start a war between these two women.

Politically, Sarah is wise to encourage this appointment. After all, the Kennedy fawning Democrat media will never again be able to use the “unqualified and inexperienced” label against Sarah again. If they do, she hits them again for the “class” warfare garbage.

In fact, the entire 2010 election message for conservatives is already taking shape.

If we think about it for a moment, most of us conservatives encouraged the appointment of Burris, calling him “qualified and experienced”. He was 35 years old and a US citizen, so is Kennedy.

Clearly the Democrats, as Harry Reid has already told us, are more interested in Democrats winning elections, holding onto power and could care less about the people.

Seriously, in 2010, whoever runs against Kennedy needs to keep pushing the Democrat elitists tag. Caroline Kennedy has certainly never walked a mile in a middle class persons shoes, ever.

All over the country right now, Democrats are just plunking butts in seats without a care in the world for the regular folks.

That is the message taking shape for 2010.

I expect Palin to be politically intelligent also. Pick your battles. Her battle is not with Kennedy it is with the liberal fawning media. That was the point she made when doing that interview.

Palin is well aware that there is no way a conservative Republican is going to be appointed to the seat by a liberal governor in a liberal state that is filling a seat for a former liberal senator. No way.

So let the liberals in the media continue to fawn over Kennedy and let them her.

When your opponents are doing something stupid, let them.

kcarpenter on January 9, 2009 at 7:03 PM

This kind of s**t is exactly what has made me turn my back on the GOP. You don’t say kind words about those who attack the right at every possible chance. EVER.

If Palin is going to become a RINO, or chummy with the left, even in this fashion, she should not bother looking for my support in the future.

DAMNIT!! I’m so sick of the GOP pulling stunts like this and p*ssing off the base that needs leadership.

Sarah Palin isn’t the answer we’ve been looking for. I want her to be, but she ain’t.

Wyznowski on January 9, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Wyz (I can’t believe I said that),

Give her some time to mature. If she’s not the best for a run in 2012, another Repub. will beat her in the primary. If another defeats her in the primary, Sarah is such a good soldier that at least we know she will ask (she doesn’t have to command) her supporters (including her Feydakin like me) to support the GOP winner in the general election.

And, assuming Sarah was unjustly attacked by the winner, her people WILL fight tooth and nail for the GOP cause in the general election. Why? Because Sarah asked us to, and that is all I need from her to release this hound to sink my teeth in another general election to bring the cup back to the GOP.

Sapwolf on January 9, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Ugh.

petefrt on January 9, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Qualified because she is old enough and an American citizen.

Experienced in the same way say a trial lawyer or a doctor or a business owner is experienced.

I don’t think it’s a good pick and it’s unlikely she’ll do anything good or meaningful, but I’d bet she’ll do less harm than the majority of her colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

ramrocks on January 9, 2009 at 7:20 PM

@abw: I was just about to say the same thing. Curiously the Constitution doesn’t specify experience as one of the qualifications for Senate (or for any other public office) it merely states the process by which people are elected or appointed to the office. There used to be a time when conservatives knew that the primary qualification for any public office was a committment to public service and “political experience” was seen as a drag on that committment. I suspect that Caroline Kennedy will lack that committment, but that has nothing to do with her experience and everything to do with her ideology.

I think Sarah Palin’s wrong on this issue, but I think it’s not exactly a stupid position to take.

Usually we hear that Palin doesn’t appeal to independents.

If she joined the chorus on this, she’d naturally be cast as a “right-wing attacker” and “hypocrite” who just wants Kennedy to be savaged like she was. Sarah has no say in whether Kennedy becomes a Senator, so she makes a polite statement which will be appreciated by liberal, pro-choice women who ordinarily would be inclined to defend Kennedy or Hillary, but not Palin.

And she gets criticized for that, too… Natch.
