Quote of the day

“She tells us she was a victim of sexism. She tells us she was a victim of class prejudice. She complains about her media treatment – then insists she never watched any of it. She deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against herself, while offering up some equally unpleasant personal comments of her own. She repeatedly shades the truth in order to escape blame for her own mistakes. (She won’t for example let go of our claim that there was some insult to Alaska embedded in Katie Couric’s simple question: ‘What do you read?’)

A smart politician rebuffs all invitations to speak about his or her own hurt feelings. It’s not just that such talk sounds whiny and weak, although it does. Much more seriously, such talk betrays a self-involvement that alienates voters almost more than any other personal quality. Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.’ Exactly so! But Palin’s replies to Ziegler make clear that for her, the election was about her. The next election will be even more so, because she has collected so many more grievances along the way.”

I want Sarah to do well. Whining will just kill her chances in the future. Vent and move on. Quick.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I agree. I believe that what she said needed to be said and it is nice to know that she wasn’t blind to the bias that we all saw and will hopefully be better prepared for it next time.

But now she should let it drop.

Buckley wrote to Reagan (after meeting with Nixon) and suggested Reagan find one of his own

Just finished “The Reagan I Knew” right before New Year’s. Pretty good read, huh? However, you could tell though that WFB passed as the book was still coming together – the chapter with Clare Boothe Luce and General Haig was bizarre, and I’m still not sure what WFB was getting at with the stuff about not being sure as of NR’s 30th anniversary that Reagan wouldn’t have retaliated to a Soviet first strike.

wise_man on January 9, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Wrong, Wise_man. The people you routinely troll are frequent commentators on many of the issues we discuss at HotAir. You, on the other hand, are primarily concerned with a single issue: the purity goodness of McCain-love.

FloatingRock on January 9, 2009 at 11:09 PM

Frum is more postive with these posts than Allah

Go Sarah Go. But go from a postition of strength. They will underestimate you and pigeon hole you. But they will not see you coming if you prepare now for 2012.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:10 PM

I have railed against Andrew “The Sarah Palin Vagina Monologues” Sullivan more than most. The Trig Trutherism is and was especially disgusting (and Sullivan still goes off about it). But if she is going to move higher in public office it must be from a position of strength.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:13 PM

I knew that was Frum even before clicking. The only thing more disgraceful than the liberal treatment of Palin was the treatment she got from some so called conservatives. And it should be pointed out that this site was very negative towards Palin. This post set the tone for what followed.

Her current press person is a disaster

This is why she needs a PAC straight away so we can front her the cash for some “personal staff” upgrades and access to high-end advisors. I’m sure her current person was just fine when it was the local Alaska media and the worst they had to worry about was the ADN and Dan Fagan. I’m sure her current reps can still probably hold up their end on the local stuff. The stakes are a little higher now on the national side.

These are words of good advice for Palin. Ronald Reagan was called everything from fascist to senile and he never took it personally. She can be pissed off at Andrew Sullivan for engaging in Trig Trutherism, but whining is a big big mistake. Frum is right. So is Allah.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Hey buttcrust,

She didn’t whine. She answered a question for a documentary. And, what got her upset were the vicious attacks on her family by the MSM using talking points from DKOS, HuffPo, DU and the rest of them. Frum is an out-of-touch elitist who has been a soldier in the RINO army along with his wife. He would be right here ONLY if Sarah started bringing this up in other interviews. That would be whining or harping. Sarah is merely answering questions, and the answers she gives are true. I saw it. Also, Allah is not right because we don’t get as much of AP’s opinion as you would think. There is not enough material there.

I do agree though that AP seems out-of-place at HA at times.

What Gov Palin is doing now and how MSM is reacting is the same attack,..where is MSM when Barry goes after Fox News? Demand people to back off his wife? Get in the faces of those who disagree with his words? Wouldn’t allow interviews with his Grandmother in Hawaii? Raised his voice to the woman who asked him about illegals in America? Cut MSM off after only 8 question? They are still going after Gov Palin and giving Barry a free pass.
MSM is scared to death of her and piss all over themselves when she talks,…..they know when Gov Palin talks, people listen.

Oh, the unhinged Trig Truther editor at the Anchorage Daily News is apparently getting rattled. He’s leaving comments on his blog entry – the suggestions that McClatchy is going bankrupt seem to bother him:

I’ve been an editor for McClatchy for 29 years, so I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that I’ve forgotten more about the McClatchy Co. than you ever knew. Our company has been around for 150 years, and I think we’ve got at least a few more in us. I take it that you’re indulging in a little wishful thinking.

BWAHAHAHAHA! Look at McClatchy’s stock price over the last five years! They’ve lost well over 90% of their value and are into penny stock territory.

And had it up to your eyeballs that these people cared more about their single issue of amnesty,

wise_man on January 9, 2009 at 11:03 PM

It’s not that anyone cared about nothing but ameesty (+path to citizenship – which made it 1000 times worse), but many of us understand that the amnesty would spell the actual end of the United States. One of the consequences of legalizing the illegals (and then giving tons of them citizenships) would be the dissolution of the US, probably through seccession starting within a decade or so. This was made clear when many of us saw the signs carried by those McShame was dying to make “Americans” – signs like “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us.” These are not people who like the US. Quite the opposite. And a huge influx of them, both through legalization and then the importation of their families, would absolutely destroy this country. Just look at the idiocy we currently have to deal with, the mass of idiocy that just elected an Constitution-hating, Indonesian raised, anti-American to the Precedency, and imagine what another few tens of millions of America-haters and idiot anti-capitalists would do to us.

Amnesty was not a single issue to anyone, that I’ve observed, but it was a deal-breaker to many because of the total destruction that it would wreak on our Republic, all by itself. At least for me, this is why amnesty was an absolute non-starter, regardless of any other positions that someone might hold.

“We built it, we paid for it, it’s ours…”

Well said, Sapwolf.

Spirit of 1776 on January 9, 2009 at 11:28 PM

I know Sarah Palin got a bum rap. Dumbass Joe Biden (who is probably your father Sapwolf) said a bunch of stupid things and got a complete pass. But to succeed as a presidential candidate you have to project power, and whining does not work.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:30 PM

And I have made it a point to attack Sullivan every chance I get for his disgraceful Trig Trutherism. If Palin wants to get mad about her kids being attacked, fair enough, go friggin Kodiak sow bear on their asses. But complaining about Katie Couric asking inane questions? Give me a break.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:32 PM

Oddly enough, I’ve long considered David Frum one of the ugliest voices on the right myself.

JM Hanes on January 9, 2009 at 11:33 PM

You never feel like she has much help – it’s always Sarah standing alone vs. the enitre MSM.

Nat Hound on January 9, 2009 at 11:00 PM

One reason why I love the woman. The MSM is so full of bullies, and at first I felt sorry for her (I even know someone who I thought might be serious about ambushing Olby). However, as I watch her more and more her beauty and grace and strength in whethering the unfair blows sent her way and especially against her family reminds me of Rocky Balboa in the first movie. I cannot help it. Americans used to love heroes rising above adversity and humble origins. Maybe not anymore.

She is like a developing Horatio Alger story.

If Peggy Noonan had half a braincell, she could have scooped up the Cuda’s story and wrote her best book ever and made millions as she bridged her blueblood with Sarah’s redblood. Epic Fail.

Sapwolf on January 9, 2009 at 11:34 PM

Frum is wrong about Palin, but he was a lot fairer to her than George Will was. Krauthammer was no fan either.

I disagree with Frum about this and I also disagree the Right has to move to the Left to be relevant. But I point out that Margaret Thatcher never whined and Sarah Palin should model herself on her example.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:35 PM

But to succeed as a presidential candidate you have to project power, and whining does not work.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Oh, for God’s sake, it wasn’t whining! She complained about attacks on her family. I didn’t hear her complaining about shots taken at her personally.

We had years and years of Bush not responding to any of the egregious crap flung at him, and as a result it stuck to him. The only person who ever fought back was Tony Snow, and we loved him for it. Remember his brilliant smackdown of Helen Thomas? Maybe Palin needs a better press secretary.

Jim62sch on January 9, 2009 at 11:36 PM

Sarah walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in her hand
She was only a girl
But she knew someone must take a stand

There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

Tav on January 9, 2009 at 11:36 PM

Good call. He brought up Fox News on multiple occasions.

V15J on January 9, 2009 at 11:37 PM

I recall during the interview that the only thing she took major issue with is the MSM’s treatment of her family. I wouldn’t expect ANY politician to be thick-skinned over that. The Carters were upset with the media when they bashed Amy, and the Clintons took issue when the MSM poked fun at Chelsea. So, in this case, Palin’s supposed to keep quiet when the media claims that Trig is Bristol’s son, not Sarah?
She showed only mild dis concern about the other issues. Besides, there are very few politicians that aren’t just a little bit whiny.

RMCS_USN on January 9, 2009 at 11:37 PM

And Peggy Noonan is a dirty old gutter snipe who is angry that Sarah Palin is smarter, more dynamic, and definitely hotter than Noonan ever was. Noonan, you let us down. Now go beg for scraps from Obama and the Democrats you truck stop whore.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 11:37 PM

Sapwolf on January 9, 2009 at 11:20 PM

Steyn! I think he’d do it too. As far as her present spokespersons: I think that both her main guy and her spokeswoman in Juneau are good in-state spokespeople, but both have a tendency to say too much. Like with Trig’s original birth announcement: the statement about him being a blessing and all that was good, but her spokeswoman also said in a separate statement that her water had broken in Texas. The spokeswoman should have never released any of the details of the birth. Just say the baby was born (don’t even give the time) and his name and weight, and refuse to answer further questions (and I love Mr. Heath, but don’t let him or any other family members answer questions either).

Sorry Joe, but my Dad is a class act. He has nothing but sorrow for those Catholics like Biden who sell their souls and vote to kill over a million unborn (and some born) babies every year in this country. Real Catholics like us are tired of the phony paper-Catholics like the Kennedys, the Bidens, the Kerrys, etc.

Regarding Sarah’s interview for the documentary, she did the correct thing in answering the questions and criticising the MSM for not checking facts for their stories and pointing out the hypocrisy if she were a liberal Dem. Remember that people like Sully actually believed that Trig was NOT her child. Do you have any clue how devastating that could make a woman feel?

Also, regarding your Biden comment, I’m not sure why somebody on HA would ever think I was in any way related to Biden or his ilk, especially after reading my comments.

Allah, and anyone else who thinks another Republican VP candidate would have come out of this election looking any better, is just wrong. Palin was quite qualified (certainly more so than the president we got), she stood for the values most conservatives stand for and BFD if she had a few words for the people who attacked her children. The media hated her like they would have hated anyone who ran against The One, and the best we can get here is a daily “boy, she’s not to popular” post. Unreal.

True, but she needs someone who understands the visual ahead of time. She shouldn’t be expected to worry about that on top of everything else she has on her plate. Reagan was lucky to have a sense of the power of the visual early on from his time in Hollywood.

Nat Hound on January 9, 2009 at 11:58 PM

Tasergate? Turkeys? Come on. Obama hung out with William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright. The election had nothing to do with “understanding the visual”.

Mr. Joe on January 10, 2009 at 12:02 AM

I think that it was fair for her to lay it out in the Ziegler interview, and to call out the media for what happened (and is continuing to happen, really) during the campaign. If she’s still talking about it in four years then I think that’s a problem. I’m hoping that her speech at CPAC will give her a chance to get some coverage on the issues. She should call Steyn and get him to help her work on her speech. ;)

meltenn on January 10, 2009 at 12:06 AM

This makes quote of the day? This is just Frum saying the exact same thing he’s said before. He’ll still be saying the same exact things if/when she’s finishing her second term. And every stumble she makes he’ll write about as proof that she’s as bad as he said.

I know AP likes to pick on Sarah Palin — presumably in the same iconoclastic way he picked on Fred! — but I really would have expected better than this. It’s like any negative comment about Sarah Palin is worthy of being trumpeted.

Which I guess is sort of a left-handed compliment.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on January 10, 2009 at 12:06 AM

I agree with both sides of the discussion. It’s possible to carry it too far, though I don’t thing she did. On the other hand:

We had years and years of Bush not responding to any of the egregious crap flung at him, and as a result it stuck to him. The only person who ever fought back was Tony Snow, and we loved him for it. Remember his brilliant smackdown of Helen Thomas? Maybe Palin needs a better press secretary.

I’m still on the fence about Palin, though, until I learn more about her positions on important issues. There are already a few I don’t like but they may have been the result of a compromise with her running mate, whatshisname.

FloatingRock on January 10, 2009 at 12:07 AM

Don’t take my comments about Sarah Palin as being anti Sarah Palin, they are not. I just want her to focus her anger (which is totally legitimate) on out smarting her opponents, who will pull every dirty trick imaginable.

Mr. Joe on January 10, 2009 at 12:02 AM

She talked about Olbermann and Couric. Palin is apparently one of the few people who actually realizes who her opponents were in the last election.

Ronnie on January 10, 2009 at 12:07 AM

Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.

And the fools believed it, every time, heh.

We go this way, rapidly. Modern day serfdom is bitter to watch. Must be sweet to the lambs who run to the trough first, then to the butcher block, volens.

Entelechy on January 10, 2009 at 12:10 AM

I think we’d all agree the turkey thing was no big deal, and frankly, kind of funny.

But, it was a mistake and the kind of thing she doesn’t need. She needs to run a clean and professional outfit to increase the perception that she’s competent.

Nat Hound on January 10, 2009 at 12:10 AM

Reagan was lucky to have a sense of the power of the visual early on from his time in Hollywood.

Nat Hound on January 9, 2009 at 11:58 PM

I read a great piece in a biography of Reagan once – early in his career, he did a lot of low-budget movies where the director would only give one take and that was it. So Reagan would work the whole scene out in his head beforehand, and his performance would then be spot-on first try.

Later in his career, he would choreograph his public political appearances the same way, even using film terminology with his advisers. At first they were a little put out, but eventually even they got into it. When helping to prep him for a debate, they would say “OK, in this scene, …” and then they would all laugh.

God, I miss him. I don’t think I really realized exactly how much I missed Reagan until I saw Bush the Elder stumbling around in his ‘92 campaign – which was really a lot like McCain’s in hindsight. I still think that I immediately took to Palin because I saw that same Reagan spark.

Barry mentions FNC a lot during the campaign and nobody in the MSM says it is whining. Yet Sarah once mentions the vicious attacks on her family by the MSM and people think that’s whining? Once? You’ve got to be kidding me

Hannity has an entire montage of the various times O has whined about him. I wonder why Hannity gets O’s back up, but not Rush. I don’t think I’ve heard O mention Rush.

Clinton, he had it in for Rush big time.

Nat Hound on January 9, 2009 at 11:54 PM

Very true. Obama is no role model of a thick-skinned politician. Put Palin and Obama side by side, and Palin wins nearly every point of comparison.

The media just ignores Obama’s stumbles, and people foolishly think he didn’t make any.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on January 10, 2009 at 12:19 AM

No doubt. But the reality is that Sarah is going to have to continue to develop if she wants to take the next step. She’s not a finished product yet, and she’s going to have be better than the Dem opponent by a decisive margin if she’s going to have even the slightest chance of winning. The MSM will see to it that she doesn’t get a single break. Getting someone to pay attention to the little things in her media presentation will help.

Nat Hound on January 10, 2009 at 12:19 AM

Apology accepted. No biggie. My late maternal grandfather was named Joseph, my older bother is named Joseph, and my 5-year old nephew is named Joseph too. I like St. Joseph because he didn’t abandon Mary and took care of business getting her and you know who to Egypt when Herod had his hissfit.

I have eyes, ears, and modicum of intelligence. I can see bullshit coming a mile away, and I don’t to stand and listen to it. It’s been a long time that a politician came along that I could identify with. As of now, I cannot identify with any elected officials in office today.

I hope……. no, I want Sarah Palin to come back. She represents the model conservative that we currently lack holding office today. And by model…. that part works for me also.

Palin’s spokesman talked with a local talk radio host this afternoon (It was on today’s show so you have to click on the ‘New Podcast Line’ and you’ll have skim through to find it because it won’t give me the times on that screen. It’s in the first half of the show, I’d say the first 1/3.). Trig Trutherism and the ADN’s pursuit of it was one of the topics. He says that the guv’s office found out that the ADN was pursuing it when the school district and the hospital called and told them that they were getting phone called from the reporter. And that the reporter called her doctor at home and threatened her with a ‘no comment’ in the article when she refused to go beyond what she’s already said (Has the reporter ever heard of HIPAA?). The host uses your ‘Grassy Knoll’ line (I’m going to assume that he reads Ace and ripped you off ;).)

From the quote and the urgency of his writing, it is obious that Frum was waiting to pounce on Palin the minute she uttered any complaint against the media treatment. Wonder why Frum was silent about all the interviews about Alaska budgets etc that she did all these weeks.

Obama didnt complain about his media treatment? Really? The minute National Review did one negative piece of Michelle Obama he went all Chicago Mafia style and practically threatened the media to keep off his family. His children I understand, why should anyone keep off his wife, who is an adult and has made political statements? And what about, “they will bamboozle you, they will hoodwink you, they’ll make you afriad of me” shtick? That’s not complaining?

Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.’ Exactly so! But Palin’s replies to Ziegler make clear that for her, the election was about her.

What perversity is this? Palin has repeatedly said (including in this interview), that when all is said and done, she doesn’t mind the shots that she has taken because they are just words, the real shots are taken by the Americans. Is that being just about her? Where do I even start about Obama? From fake presidential seals to oceans levels receding, it was always about him.

Finally, is there any rule that she shouldn’t talk to friendly interviwers? The subject of the interview was media treatment of her candidacy, so she spoke about that. She has always maintained that the media didn’t correct the record, which is true. Even the CNN guy admitted the same thing when he interviwed her.

Her campaign didn’t mishandle her? Come on. The campaign shut her off initially and let that Palin-is-walled-off meme develop. As if to rectify that, to rectify that they offered unlimited access to hostile people. Why didn’t the campaign protest when ABC news chopped her answers off?

Frum, sir, you can buzz off.

As long as we continue to let the left set the standard, I don’t think Jesus Christ could win an election in this country. We let the left pick our candidate for president, and we let the left destroy our VP, and all Allah can find to say about it is that Palin’s whiny because she didn’t dodge some question about exactly what I just said.

Thanks for the link – I just left a snarky comment with that information at the ADN editor’s blog.

Jim62sch on January 10, 2009 at 12:34 AM

She was not part of the Elite class which had the attitude, “How dare her even think she could run against our chosen One?”….. Barry and Sarah are the polar opposites of media coverage and we just elected our first president that wasn’t vetted by the media, yet the defeated VP pick was Hyper-Vetted, even smeared and lied about. She has a right to state the facts as she see’s them, and, it didn’t sound like whining to me….

It didn’t sound like whining and it wasn’t.

She got emotional a bit because Zeigler showed her clips of SNL making fun of Bristol and Levi that she had not seen.

This link was posted before in the thread but Andrea Tantaros makes an excellent counterpoint to Frum.
