Quote of the day

“She tells us she was a victim of sexism. She tells us she was a victim of class prejudice. She complains about her media treatment – then insists she never watched any of it. She deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against herself, while offering up some equally unpleasant personal comments of her own. She repeatedly shades the truth in order to escape blame for her own mistakes. (She won’t for example let go of our claim that there was some insult to Alaska embedded in Katie Couric’s simple question: ‘What do you read?’)

A smart politician rebuffs all invitations to speak about his or her own hurt feelings. It’s not just that such talk sounds whiny and weak, although it does. Much more seriously, such talk betrays a self-involvement that alienates voters almost more than any other personal quality. Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.’ Exactly so! But Palin’s replies to Ziegler make clear that for her, the election was about her. The next election will be even more so, because she has collected so many more grievances along the way.”

She deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against herself, while offering up some equally unpleasant personal comments of her own.

I have heard her say she deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against her family, not herself. She’s pretty thick skinned, much to the chagrin of all the character assassins!

Given their candidate’s flaws and limitations, concealment and evasion was the right media strategy. So it remains, and so it seems it always will.

Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.’ Exactly so!

I’m not sure what campaign Frum was watching, but the one I was watching was all about the One. Never once did I feel he cared about me or anyone else but himself.

Gianni on January 9, 2009 at 9:41 PM

What I saw of that interview doesn’t negatively impact my opinion of Palin one bit. In fact, I think the MSM needs to be confronted head on. It was atrocious the way she was treated and there is no reason Palin shouldn’t respond to false accusations spread by the media, some of which are ongoing conspiracy theories. I suspect the RINO’s at the National Review are preparing the ground for Jeb Bush or some other Rino in ‘12.

On the other hand, I was thoroughly disappointed with what she said about Caroline schlockburg, or whatever her name is.

FloatingRock on January 9, 2009 at 9:42 PM

AP

You need to add the info that was posted in a Palin thread that David Frum is married to Danielle Crittenden, who writes for HuffPo.

It’s kind of like being married to a Kennedy–you get pulled to the Left.

Through the 2008 election, Barack Obama repeatedly said ‘It’s not about me. It’s about you.’ Exactly so!

Easy to say when the media are enthusiastically kissing your ass.

She deplores the unpleasant personal comments directed against herself, while offering up some equally unpleasant personal comments of her own. She repeatedly shades the truth in order to escape blame for her own mistakes.

I can’t think of a time Sarah Palin made “unpleasant personal comments” about someone else. Maybe “community organizer”? “Palling around with terrorists”? “Shades truth to escape blame”? Give me a break. I figured though that after the slime job (which hasn’t stopped), it would be alllll Palin’s fault. I’m becoming thoroughly disgusted with this country.

Nonsense. She laid out the facts as they unfolded and the interview was specifically targeted to delve into the media hate fest unleashed on her. As a conservative woman I appreciate the fact that Palin is telling the truth. No one ever wants to face down the sexism – which is especially harsh against those of us who choose to have children, careers and who have husbands who are not metrosexual, bicurious liberals obssessed with themselves bent on running the country into some kind of twisted Kafka-esque universe.

R.S. McCain addressed Frum in a post today: David Frum vs. Politics. I thought he had an interesting take:

David Frum is a brilliant writer, but he does not understand politics. I don’t mean policy or governance or ideology, I’m talking about pure politics.
-snip-
Frum’s attack on Sarah Palin today, as with his previous attacks on Palin, is written from the perspective of an establishment insider and… fails to look at the situation from the standpoint of the Ordinary American.

Andrea Tantaros has a post up about the interview as well (she doesn’t address Frum though).

If Sarah Palin is serious about national office, she needs to do the work to get there. Governor of a state is a good stepping stone but it is only that.

highhopes on January 9, 2009 at 9:59 PM

Can you imagine if Sarah deadpanned “Daily Kos, DemocraticUnderground, and Huffington Post” in response to Couric’s idiotic question?

Can someone explain to me the significance of Couric’s question? The question hardly merits the discussion it has been given over the past few months. Are we to believe that Sarah is illiterate because she didn’t rattle off four or five dead tree sources of media?

Who consumes media like that anymore?

Is the expectation that the governor of a state is going to trudge down a snowcovered driveway in her bathrobe and pick up the NYT, LAT, WP, USAToday, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal, carry them back inside, and read them all cover to cover over coffee? Maybe couple of hours later when the mailman arrives, he’ll bring by Time, Newsweek, USNews, the Economist, Foreign Affairs, Forbes, and maybe NR for giggles. She should be able to bang that out no problem over a sandwich and a Diet Dr. Pepper.

Over a given week, I’d be almost everyone here come in contact with 40 or 50 different media outlets through the magic of the internet. Sources like HotAir (among others) point us in a direction and we pick and choose from there. I’d be hard pressed not to answer that question in a similar manner to Sarah. We read any of them, all of them, whatever gets our attention at the moment.

Jeez, no wonder the dinosaur media is going extinct. You’d need a federal bailout to pay for all the subscriptions you’d need for the MSM to consider you “intellectually curious” and “well-informed.”

These are words of good advice for Palin. Ronald Reagan was called everything from fascist to senile and he never took it personally. She can be pissed off at Andrew Sullivan for engaging in Trig Trutherism, but whining is a big big mistake. Frum is right. So is Allah.

They attacked her kids , even Cheney gets angry by that.

I am thinking about letting the Messiah know it is indeed all about him. I plan on standing by the railroad tracks somewhere south of Philly and giving him the bird (both fists) as he begins his Leninesque (vlad, not john) train ride to the coronation in DC.

Did Allah write this tripe or just post??? No matter as Allah has never been supportive of a good conservative…Palin tried hard to carry McMidgit across the finish line, but RINOs are heeeaaavvvy!! Hope she tries on her own….

b4lucy on January 9, 2009 at 10:57 PM

the interview was about media bias … she said what she had to say

in two weeks the Messiah gets placed on his throne

people like Frum, Parker, Schuster will be worrying about whether they are invited to the inaugural ball and if Obama will look at them

“he looked at me” … “no, he was totally looking at me”

joey24007 on January 9, 2009 at 10:57 PM

LOL,..David, …don’t hold Gov Palin as a target for all those who wouldn’t give you the time of day, your wife shouldn’t either…: o )

I want Sarah to do well. Whining will just kill her chances in the future. Vent and move on. Quick.

Mr. Joe on January 9, 2009 at 10:49 PM

My impression is that this interview was part of an expose about media bias, which is a cancer upon our country, destroying it from within, and in this case in the context of a presidential election. The abuse Palin suffered at the hands of the “mainstream media” (/sarc), is worthy of comment. I agree that she shouldn’t obsess about it, but I don’t get the impression that that will be a problem. However, so long as the accusations are valid, I would personally like to see more politicians call out the media about their bias. For the good of the nation, not any given politician.

Didn’t Obama get whiney about his treatment by Fox News? Said their coverage was costing him several points in the polls.

It’s okay for him to do that though. If you’re Obama, it shows courage to expose the slanderous intentions of your enemies.

SheofTwoMinds on January 9, 2009 at 11:00 PM

What do you all consider whining? She has a legitimate beef with the media. Do you think the MSM would leave her alone and give her a chance if she wouldn’t be critical of them? Hells no.

It would only embolden them to take more shots, be even meaner and more cruel.

Sarah needs a “Marty McSorely” to her “Wayne Gretzky.” Someone who will keep the goons on the other team from taking runs at her so she has room to do what she does best.

You never feel like she has much help – it’s always Sarah standing alone vs. the enitre MSM.

I think Allah’s issue may be that Palin’s is not a “proportional response”.

respectfully, if you experienced months of having the same cast of characters calling you a troll, insulting you and mocking your login name because you *gasp!* wanted the republican who voted with us 80% of the time – to win the election and not the democrat. And had it up to your eyeballs that these people cared more about their single issue of amnesty, and tried to turn off as many as possible to support the republican who won the republican primary and was the only one who could defeat the democrat, – the same person who voted with us only 7% of the time, and will nominate liberal judges, everything else that comes with the most liberal (inexperienced) senator of 2007 …. then you might resort to speaking to these people in the only language that they understand.

…… respectfully.

exactly … Richard Nixon would call such a person a “Nut-Cutter”

Buckley wrote to Reagan (after meeting with Nixon) and suggested Reagan find one of his own

joey24007 on January 9, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Frum is a buffoon. I thought he took his minimal resume and left the National Review? At any rate, Gov. Palin was not expressing self pity (or grievance).

She was justifiably pointing out the obvious disparities in the media. About time too. No one likes a political figure that doesn’t stand up for him(her)self, especially when the media takes off after her loved ones. As a parent, you have to defend your loved ones. She is simply serving notice that she will not crumble up and go away.

Most importantly, few realize that the media continues to hound her family members.

I recall when President Bush 41 took off on Dan Rather during his campaign for president. He wasn’t called a grievance monger afterward either.
