CNN republishes fake atrocity video; Update: CNN responds

posted at 8:00 pm on January 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday evening, I wrote about CNN’s use of an obvious fake video, sourced from Hamas’ webmaster, of an alleged Israeli attack on two young boys playing on a roof.  After being exposed by blogs, CNN took the video down without any explanation.  As of 4:30 pm ET today, though, the video has returned to CNN’s site, although they seem to have turned off the embedding for it. This version did get onto YouTube earlier — in fact, we used that to discuss this on today’s TEMS episode:

There are several points that clearly show this to be a fake. Yesterday I wrote about the doctors and the ridiculous effort at CPR, plus the inclusion of notorious pro-Hamas activist Mads Gilbert. When Duane and I looked at this again, we saw a few other points as well.

  • Take a look at the blood on the operating table.  For penetrating wounds, there is almost no blood, and what little there is looks washed out — almost orange.  The body should have been covered in blood, and much more than that should have transferred to the sheets, especially if someone was giving CPR.
  • The video alleges that the Israelis used a missile from an unmanned drone to attack the rooftop, but look carefully at that roof.  A missile hitting that roof would have left much more than a six-inch-diameter impact crater, even if it didn’t explode.
  • Also, the plastic chair is sitting normally in the blast zone, and the clothes remain on the clothesline in the background.  A missile blast that killed two boys on that roof would have done much more extensive damage.

It’s not only a fake, it’s an absurd fake.  It’s not even done well, and Gilbert’s dramatic headshake at the end of the supposed CPR — in which Doctor #2′s hands keep coming off the body — is only the cheesy coup de grace.  Why did CNN republish this?

Update: And as soon as I wrote this, HA reader Pete L sends me CNN’s explanation:

There’s no truth to accusations by bloggers that a Palestinian camera crew staged a video showing the death of the videographer’s brother after an Israeli rocket attack, said the team’s employer.

“It’s absolute nonsense,” Paul Martin, co-owner of World News and Features, said of accusations leveled by bloggers at videographer Ashraf Mashharawi.

“He’s a man of enormous integrity and would never get involved with any sort of manipulation of images, let alone when the person dying is his own brother,” Martin said. “I know the whole family. I know them very well. … [Mashharawi] is upset and angry that anyone would think of him having done anything like this. … This is ridiculous. He’s independent.”

Maybe Martin can explain how a missile hits a roof and kills two boys but does no more damage to the roof than what a pickaxe could do in five minutes — and how the furniture didn’t get disturbed.

Update II: Charles has more at LGF.

Israel Palestine 1947 to present

Andrew Sullivan posted this map, presumably to show how the Israelis are presuring Palestinians. Of course, what he leaves out is that Palestinians tried to destroy Israel in 1947 and 48, tried to do it again in 1967 (although Israel attacked first when it appeared the Nassar and Syrian armies were about to move), Egypt attacked in 1973. Some argue no settlements should have occurred in occupied Gaza, Jerusalem, Golan Heights, and the West Bank, but given the hostility of her neighbors, Israel has in fact been restrained.

How is it that a “crater” from an unmanned drone pushes the area around the hole in the roof up instead of down?

Clearly fake and why CNN needs to be considered the global propaganda arm of terrorists. It was bad enough when they were sending military encampment coordinates to the Iraqis during the first gulf war and the way they’ve constantly attacked this nation but the time for them to be considered a news source is at an end. They enable terrorists.

Why did CNN republish this?

Well Ed usually I think you’d have connected these dots by now. But the reason CNN republished this and gave the excuse they did is they need to create cover for Hamas regardless of whether this is true or not. After all there have already been news stories about Obama opening talks with Hamas. If Hamas looks evil in the news as opposed to victims it will not fit with the narrative of Obama working with an oppressed group of people.
This video being republished is to help Obama look good and to prop his presidency. When he does open up talks they will need to revisit this video and play it numerous times to show how evil Israel is and the need to open talks with Hamas and how to aid them against their opressors.
Hyperbole?…I think not.

That’s actually a quite plausible scenario. We have to begin thinking of the American media in the same way as the old Soviet media. They’re going to do everything they can to prep the population to support Obama and the Democratic Party’s policies.

tee866 on January 9, 2009 at 9:54 PM

Occam’s razor, folks. The most likely explanation usually works out to be as much.

Could it possibly be that Israeli’s saw the figures of two young men observing a battlefield atop a home, and assumed anyone sticking their neck out there could only have been crazy enough to be combatant?

Then they went after the two observers with something strictly anti-personnel to ensure the buildings beneath them were put at minimal risk?

That makes a lot of sense, actually. Especially in light of your “evidence” disproving the video:

For penetrating wounds, there is almost no blood, and what little there is looks washed out — almost orange

I’m quite sure the kid bled out on the roof, and on the way to the hospital. To say nothing of the possibility that he was transferred from one bed to another. The lack of blood, at this stage, is no reason at all.

A missile hitting that roof would have left much more than a six-inch-diameter impact crater… A missile blast that killed two boys on that roof would have done much more extensive damage

I’m no munitions expert, but I’m quite sure that the Israelis have anti-personnel ordinance that can be fired (or directed) from a UAV that does minimal structural damage. I see a lot of shrapnel in the pictures, which would support that idea. Ironically, they’d use this type of weapon to minimize civilian casualties in case there were innocents in the building below.

… fake CPR …

That clip is way to short and choppy to know that in any meaningful way, especially if the brother picked up his camera at the end of it all. They could likely have been just going through the motions.

The video may, in fact, be staged. But you have displayed no evidence that proves it fake, or disproves what has been shown.

Don’t waste your credibility, and HotAir’s credibility, on something you only are in a position to speculate upon, and quite wildly I might add.

It just reminds me of all that wildy lefty speculation about who Trig Palin’s real mom was. Weak. Very, very weak.

How ’bout the fact that the heart monitor wasn’t attached? Or the fact that oxygenation isn’t happening with the Oxygen bag on the wall? Or the fact that the kid isn’t on any wide open IV fluids? Or the fact that the kid isn’t naked on the bed (the way resuscitation is supposed to happen)? Or the fact that the roof that was supposed to be destroyed by a missile was pretty much pristine? Or the fact that there was NO blood on the roof? Or the fact that there was no huge hole in the family’s supposed apartment? Or the fact that the apartment complex isn’t destroyed (you know how missiles work right?)?

Work it out, genius.

mjk on January 9, 2009 at 10:53 PM

P. S. Seanie boy, I’m a nurse so any resuscitation thing I know. I know well.

mjk on January 9, 2009 at 10:54 PM

Take a look at the blood on the operating table. For penetrating wounds, there is almost no blood, and what little there is looks washed out — almost orange. The body should have been covered in blood, and much more than that should have transferred to the sheets, especially if someone was giving CPR.

Emphasis mine.

Please look at the channel 4 video in the previous post or on LGF. From 1:45-1:50 the child’s left hand is visible, on it you can see a dressing on the wrist – this is consistent with a rush IV insertion on the hand or wrist. In that 4 second time frame you can also see the blood stain on the sheets. When the body is rolled, around 2:06, the stain is clear and as you say it looks orange. Please look at that stain – here is what appears to be happening: the IV was running but the vein was blown & leaking or the patient is deceased and the vein is not pumping so the IV fluids leak out. The red blood cells remain in the center and the other fluids along with the IV fluids wick into the fabric of the sheet. It appears to be blood diluted with a lot of IV fluids. It is an old stain – meaning it didn’t happen while the video was being shot.

Hopefully CNN will have one of their TV doctors or a nurse or a janitor in a hospital look at the video. The video doctor declared the patient dead due to “extreme bradycardia”. If you are Bardycardic you are ALIVE with a slow heartbeat. Patients who are hypovolumic due to a penetrating trauma have tachycardia as the heart tries to compensate for the low blood volume by pumping it faster. And patients who are deceased have NO HEARTBEAT – asystole. If the patient had a penetrating wound and was hemorrhaging they would be, among other things, running the IV wide open, ordering blood and trying to find the source of the wound. Not fiddle-farting around with the electrodes & watching the monitor like it’s a re-run of St. Elsewhere.

Hey CNN – any layman can look up the guidelines for CPR Medical professionals give 100 compressions per minute AND provide 8-10 breaths per minute without stopping the compressions to do so. Not only are the actors in the video not providing lay-person CPR (BCLS) they are not providing hospital based CPR (ACLS.

The child at the end of the video does appear to be dead, the floppy head has absolutely no muscle tone whatsoever. Rigor takes 3 hours to begin and up to 12 to fully set in. This is followed by flaccidity as the body decomposes.

This is a video of 4 individuals desecrating a dead body.

batterup on January 9, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Not fiddle-farting around with the electrodes & watching the monitor like it’s a re-run of St. Elsewhere.

Bwah. Clearly you’ve never run a code. The first thing you do when anyone comes into any emergent situation is slap the ekg on so that you don’t shock them by accident (thus killing them) and you can watch to see if any heart rate activity is going down. Otherwise, you’re quite right about the code part.

How ’bout the fact that the heart monitor wasn’t attached?

And in the middle of a war, when someone brings in a young boy that pretty much looks dead, and has not vitals, you do everything by the book?

Or the fact that oxygenation isn’t happening with the Oxygen bag on the wall? Or the fact that the kid isn’t on any wide open IV fluids?

See above…

Or the fact that the kid isn’t naked on the bed (the way resuscitation is supposed to happen)?

Again… war zone… patient likely brought in dead.

Or the fact that the roof that was supposed to be destroyed by a missile was pretty much pristine?

I addressed that in my comment above. There is anti-personnel ordinance can usually avoid a lot of structural damage, and are designed to do as much.

Or the fact that there was NO blood on the roof?

I see a hose and water, for starters. Secondly, they didn’t show a massive sweep of the entire roof. I do see a whole lot of shrapnel, so SOMETHING hit it.

Or the fact that there was no huge hole in the family’s supposed apartment?

Again, ready my whole post. You don’t have to destroy a building to kill the folks on top of it.

Or the fact that the apartment complex isn’t destroyed (you know how missiles work right?)?

Again, ready my whole post. You don’t have to destroy a building to kill the folks on top of it.

Work it out, genius.

I did. And my scenario seems a heckuva lot more likely than your wild idea.

Seanie D on January 9, 2009 at 11:14 PM

And again, the whole point of my post is that there is a very logical and reasonable explanation for all the stuff you people bring up.

Yet you choose to sink your teeth into an unprovable conspiracy theory.

Instead of two kids getting killed in the fog of war, because it looks like could have been engaged in surveillance on top of a building (and it would have a been a justifiable, albeit later regrettable attack), this is all just a crazy Pallywood stunt.

Take a step back and breathe folks.

I know you’re not journalists, but face at least a few facts.
Get a grip folks.

Seanie D on January 9, 2009 at 11:14 PM

I don’t buy it. If these docs are trained (in medicine), they have a procedure, and stick to it.

As far as the building goes, If a missile hit it, there would be obvious, visible, and massive damage. That’s how ordnance that that works. Anti-personnel blah, blah, blah. You can’t POSSIBLY believe what you’re typing. You must be some sort of troll.

And the Israelis don’t have ANY of our M429 anti-personnel air burst rockets in their arsenal. We’d never sell arms to the Israelis.

the_nile on January 9, 2009 at 11:48 PM

Seanie D: You don’t know what you’re talking about. Two things are uncontrovertable. The CPR which was being performed was not compressing the chest, period. Therefore blood was not being manually circulated. In fact, the guys hand is seen palm down on the patient and comes up off the body. 2nd, even if this clown was doing CPR no one is providing oxygen. No one is bagging this patient, period. So even if they were circulating blood (which they were not) the patient is brain dead from lack of oxygen. The guy on the right is recognized as a real MD and he knows that this is farce and he is an active participant. The beeping you hear in the background is the cardiac monitor beeping because the cardiac leads are not attached, though the machine is on and the MD looks at the monitor as if he’s reading a cardiac rhythm, but he can’t be b/c the warning beep indicates at least one lead is off. Moreover, the guy in the green later passes a package of lead patches for which the MD at the very end applies. It is a joke.

I’ve probably seen a couple hundred codes in my 23 years of experience and I’ve also seen high velocity injuries from gunshots, having served 4 years in the Army medical corps. This is not what is claimed to be, period.

You’re out of your depth on this one and you should swim back to the shallow end of the pool.

Though I must take issue with the following comment made by someone:

For penetrating wounds, there is almost no blood, and what little there is looks washed out — almost orange. The body should have been covered in blood,

Not always. I’ve seen multiple cases resulting in death due to gunshots (penetrating wounds) and the body was not always covered in blood. It totally depends on the type of injury. For example a 22 cal. makes a small penetrating wound and may not produce an exit wound and may in fact produce a fairly minimal amount of blood.

The bomb blast is not realistic. Listen to what the guys says around 1:25, “they targeted them with just a small rocket, a small one just for them”. So let me get this straight, the drone was rearmed for small kids, or this was a small munitions equipped drone especially designed to hit kids on roof tops? As opposed to the adult sized munitions…..

You know, the video demonstrates such a stunningly superficial knowledge of a trauma code that it’s almost embarrassing to watch. (to paraphrase Zbigniew)

moxie_neanderthal on January 9, 2009 at 11:51 PM

IF (and that’s a BIG IF) a “rocket” hit that roof, it was one of Hamas’ homemade jobbers that fell short, or just darted off in an unintended direction. Which by the way, happens all the time. Of course, they really don’t care about whacking a couple of their own with a wayward rocket, because they have a willing and ready set of activists/actors to spin propaganda.

NO ROCKET in US drone inventory would produce such little damage, and since Israel doesn’t have but MAYBE a handfull of drones with “any” sort of armament (and that’s a big maybe), it’s doubtful they’d use such a rarity of a “weapons system” on this target.

Pallywood all the way.

Jason Coleman on January 9, 2009 at 11:55 PM

Responding to accusations that the resuscitation efforts of Mashharawi’s brother appeared inauthentic, Martin said that, based on his years of reporting from Gaza, doctors often go through such efforts even with little hope that a patient can be saved.

This is not even responsive to the question! I have run many codes where there is little hope. You don’t do bullsh!t CPR. If you’re going to try, you try. And as I said last night, if you are trying to save someone from a traumatic arrest, you crack the chest. I cannot believe CNN is buying this ridiculous explanation.

Why would israel go to great lengths to not kill civilians , they call people up to get them away from building they strike , and then suddenly target some random kids.

This video is designed around the individual/personal narrative “behind the scenes” .

How many seconds of the hospital scene do you see in this video? 10?

And from that you can deduce everything that these medical professionals did, how long they did it for, and the order it was done in.

Riiiight.

The only reason I’m posting is because all of the wild speculation on your part is explainable to a reasonable mind.

And when y’all get officially proven wrong on this (like if they release the raw video), and made asses of, you’re going to squander a great deal of credibility that the conservative blogosphere has thus far earned.

I don’t really care so much that you’re irrational and refuse to see the forest for the trees. I’m more concerned about the damage you’re going to do to our side. All of a sudden, conservative-blogger-debunking of the MSM will be able to be dismissed easily.

Hold to the fact that 10 seconds of video tells you everything you need to know about a situation; that all bleeding MUST be done on hospital gurneys and never at the scene, or in the vehicle that took the victim to the hospital; and that airburst rockets (that send out shrapnel but do little structural damage) fired from UAVs or helicopters don’t exist, even if they do.

Because that’s all just trivia. Some of you know proper hospital procedure. A volunteer Norweigan doctor, who could very well be a Dermatologist for all we know, in a war zone should have been fully trained in how to handle a combat hospital after getting maybe 15 hours of sleep in a week.

Yes, stake your credibility on that.

I wasn’t clear – it’s the application & the resulting tone that sounds like a lead is off. Misapplication & Misuse of equipment=fiddle-farting

As moxie_neanderthal on January 9, 2009 at 11:51 PM

points it out.

The quote about penetrating wounds is Ed’s, it is at the top of the article in the bullet points. I quoted it to give an alternate theory as to the origin of the blood stain on the sheet.

Seanie, they are NOT DOING CPR. There is NO RESUSCITATION ATTEMPT. I’m not speculating; I’m boarded in Emergency Medicine.

So they couldn’t just be going through the motions for a guy that brought in his dead brother?

I give up on you folks. I really do. Let me know when you find this non-dead kid to prove your point. He looks pretty dead to me.

This is the Crescent News Network trying to bump Al-Jazeera from its top spot as the preferred network for the 7th-Century, illiterate barbarians.

Why are so many surprised at this?

Dave R. on January 10, 2009 at 12:21 AM

If they are “going through the motions”, then this is not what CNN portrays it to be, which is the whole point.

mikeyboss on January 10, 2009 at 12:24 AM

“He’s a man of enormous integrity and would never get involved with any sort of manipulation of images, let alone when the person dying is his own brother,” Martin said. “

Every bit as credible as demanding that we believe all of their journalists are unbiased.

Not bloody likely.

Dude, you’re embarrassing yourself. Give it up. You’re trying to tell people that do this stuff for a living that we don’t know what we know. The stuff I and other have pointed out are things not open for interpretation. Period. Give it a break.

The real embarassment should be shouldered by the willing co participants in this stupid, poorly acted and laughably innaccurate play. Mads Gilbert is shown to either be the most incompetant physician in the western world or a willing accomplice. Period.

By sticking to their guns, CNN is exposed as being an incompetant organization that is incapable of fact checking a video that anyone with a Red Cross CPR card could expose as a fraud.

It is a binary proposition:either CNN is incompetant at a shockingly simplistic level or they are conspirators.

The flotsam and jetsam that suggest anything else are fooling only themselves.

Performing CPR like that would get you terminated in any US hospital. Professionals have to do a professional job not a show to please the family, a careless show will land you in court and will please nobody. The man performing the compressions is clearly not a trained doctor, nurse or medic of any sort. If this boy’s family truly thinks this was a desperate effort, they are being cruelly deceived.

As for whether he was dead or sedated, I cannot say. But I can say the “doctors” involved are thoroughly incompetant if this was “real” Compressions without vents? In a hospital? By trained personnel? CNN must think we are stupid. Maybe this will look real to the arab street or people who have not seen better performances on ER or even Grey’s anatomy, but it looked staged, fake and way too calm to me.

Seanie D on January 10, 2009 at 12:07 AM

Are you a troll or just a freakin’ idiot? Some of us know more than you have any idea. I can’t speak to the medical side, there are plenty of others who have done that. As far as your mythical “airburst rockets” fired from UAVs or helicopters that do little structural damage (apparently to the point of not even damaging clothing or plastic chairs) — there is this little thing called Kinetic Energy, if you fire something from a platform, even if you blow up some part of that something at end-game, there are lots of other non-exploding somethings with mass and KE that will do damage to structures. Some not as much as others, but there will be evidence of a flame-front and some amount of impact crater from the delivery system. Further, an airburst weapon would create a significant pressure wave that would have devastated the loose articles (chair, clothesline, loose sheet metal, etc.) on that roof. No evidence of such a burst exists in that video. Your “shrapnel” looks more like pick-axe marks. If the blast was sufficiently powerful to break up that block of cement, there would have been significantly more damage on that roof.

The one peddling the conspiracy theories, with your airburst weapons only large enough to kill two kids from mythical Israeli drones is you.

AZfederalist on January 10, 2009 at 1:15 AM

Now sedation may be a real possibility. It would produce bradycardia and make a person pretty floppy. There would be no point venting someone who was breathing on his own and serious chest compressions might wake him up as they would surely hurt like hell.

clnurnberg on January 10, 2009 at 1:17 AM

Small correction to my post, in addition to pick-axe marks, small arms fire could produce those kinds of pock-marks
