CNN stung by fake atrocity video?

posted at 9:15 pm on January 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I saw this segment earlier on CNN and wondered at the time how easily this could have been faked.  Pretty darned easily, as LGF discovered, and the questions start where the fakery seems most obvious:

The story was supposedly that a freelance journalist in Gaza returned home to find his younger brother dead, the victim of a missile attack on a residential rooftop from an unmanned IDF drone. The video shows the supposed scene of the attack, and follows the Gaza family from the hospital to the burial, after a heroic attempt by doctors to revive the young child.

Only, when you look at the supposedly heroic effort, it lacks one thing: any sense that the two doctors are actually performing CPR with any effort at all. They stop as though they’ve scripted out the moment. That’s when I questioned whether the scene could have been faked, and at LGF, a physician called shenanigans:

I’m no military expert, but I am a doctor, and this video is bullsh-t. The chest compressions that were being performed at the beginning of this video were absolutely, positively fake. The large man in the white coat was NOT performing CPR on that child. He was just sort of tapping on the child’s sternum a little bit with his fingers. You can’t make blood flow like that. Furthermore, there’s no point in doing chest compressions if you’re not also ventilating the patient somehow. In this video, I can’t tell for sure if the patient has an endotracheal tube in place, but you can see that there is nobody bag-ventilating him (a bag is actually hanging by the head of the bed), and there is no ventilator attached to the patient. In a hospital, during a code on a ventilated patient, somebody would probably be bagging the patient during the chest compressions. And they also would have moved the bed away from the wall, so that somebody could get back there to intubate the patient and/or bag him. In short, the “resuscitation scene” at the beginning is fake, and it’s a pretty lame fake at that.

A little more investigation determined that one of the doctors in the video is notorious terrorist apologist Mads Gilbert. The older brother, meanwhile, is no mere “free-lance cameraman” but the owner of a business that hosts Internet web sites for Hamas. In other words, this looks an awful attempt at propaganda that only a “professional” media outlet with a pre-existing animus to Israel would put on the air without any checking of sources.

CNN has pulled the video from its rotation and its web site, without any explanation or retraction. We’ll see if they own up to their mistake, or simply hope no one notices.

Yeah, I can always tell on “E/R” when they’re faking compressions on a live actor, too.

And they almost never appear to have any actuall liquid in the to-go coffee cups they sip from, but that’s another problem altogether.

Captain Scarlet on January 9, 2009 at 3:40 AM

Now, I realize it has been almost a year since I had my last CPR/AR refresher, but have things changed?

Is the ratio now 4800 compressions to 1 breath?

Jim708 on January 9, 2009 at 6:45 AM

“Fired, says the family, from a pilotless Israeli drone.”

Since Israel has 100% control of the skies over Gaza, the only reason to use unmanned drones is because they are stealthy and nearly impossible to see or hear when they are flying. Yet the family, who you would assume was inside the house at the time, claims to know where the missile came from.

thuljunior on January 9, 2009 at 6:59 AM

I’m no expert on these things, but I have two observations:

1) The child’s body was pretty pliable. It moved around like he was sleeping. When does rigor mortis set in?

2) Muslim burial rites are fairly involved and include a ritual cleaning of the body. Now, they could be skipping the niceties in a war zone, but the kid was wrapped in the bloody sheets that he came home from the hospital in.

Kafir on January 9, 2009 at 7:01 AM

Fake, as a former medic, the chump doing chest compressions, or ah faking chest compressions was doing a terrible job at it. More propaganda from the Collaborating News Network.

Kafir on January 9, 2009 at 7:01 AM

Like virtually every other Muslim “custom” or religious practice, burial rites are subordinate to the Muslim’s duty to crusade against the Great Satan. And if by crusade you mean make propaganda videos which are breathlesly aired by CNN to pretend to show Israeli war crimes, then yes, observance of the Muslim burial rates is optional.

P.S. My money is on that kid not being dead.

Gee, who’s going to tell Matt Lauer?

Keemo on January 9, 2009 at 8:21 AM

Fake as Pamela Anderson’s chest.
The doctor is doing compressions on a live child. Because he isn’t even using the proper technique. He might as well have just pushed the chest up and down with two fingers (like you do with a baby).
No visible IV’s/monitors on the child.
The kid is wrapped up in a really bright blanket while the “CPR” is being done. He’d be naked as the day is long in real life.
The oxygen bag ain’t anywhere near the child. Ventilation is very important in resuscitation since the point is to get blood moving (chest compressions) and oxygen throughout the system (oxygen bag/ventilator)
No visible blood or actual injury.
When the kid got home, the glimpse of his face showed that his lips were pink. If he were dead, they’d be pale.
No rigor mortis.
If an evil Joo missile hit the apartment complex/house, it did a piss poor job because the entire family should be dead with the home collapsing. It’s in decently nice shape, actually. The pock marks appear to be from gun fire, not from any Israeli attacks. Now who in Gaza would possibly be firing guns??? (hint: since the Israelis haven’t been in there for a while, I’m thinking it starts with H and ends with amas) I didn’t see any blood on the roof, as claimed by the reporter. I saw paint and crappy chairs.

fake, fake, fake, fake, fake. From beginning to end, fake.

Removed, which is another proof of CNN’s mindset and intent; they should not remove, but it should be news in and of itself that this is happening and casts significant doubt on many/all of the “omg, civilian casualties!” stories we’re hearing.

CNN had a Baghdad office under Saddam in exchange for not reporting his atrocities.

CNN, also carried the water for Teh Messiah.

They are both. Their eagerness to paint Israel and/or America in a bad light leads them to accept any anti-Israeli or anti-American report uncritically. Any real news organization would have stopped and said, “Could this be fake?” Not CNN.

the_nile on January 9, 2009 at 9:21 AM

So, will one of the other networks pick this up and make a story out of it, or I should say report the actual story that CNN is helping to spread this sort of propaganda? If I were president of one of their competitors, I’d make it my headline. Of course, all but Fox share their ideology, so we’ll see. Are they more interested in money/ratings/taking out the competition, or in covering up for CNN so they don’t have to expose the bias that they share?

pannw on January 9, 2009 at 9:33 AM

Ah crap, are we back to the MSM reporting fauxtography as fact, as they did during the Hezbollah/Israel conflict in 2006?

Seriously, I feel like the only thing missing here is “green helmet guy”! Ya’ll remember him, right?

BTW, if you’re reading these comments, Allah, don’t think I forgot how great you were with your coverage of fauxtographygate, but how weak you were to simply drop this most obvious of examples, at the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2006/07/25/world/200607725_LEBA_SLIDESHOW_4.html

Anyone can see that the face of the guy in the bottom right is clearly cut and pasted over what appears to be a woman’s head/body. I still don’t want to let that one die, but my correspondence with the NY Times got me no where, because I’m not powerful enough make enough noise.

There was an update on LGF—seems this ‘freelance journalist’ has another job besides fauxtvideography. He runs a media site that is, wait for it, a mouthpiece for Hamas…

Whod’ve thunk?

From LGF:

And meanwhile, LGF reader “Killgore Trout” has discovered that the “freelance photographer,” Ashraf Mashharawi, also runs a business in Gaza called Nepras For Media & IT, which hosts websites. And according to Internet Haganah, in 2004 they were listed as the operator of at least two websites for … Hamas.

mjk on January 9, 2009 at 10:33 AM

There is something else interesting about this video. The tall doctor (who, I assume is the Norwegian) has been appearing on a number of BBC News reports from inside Gaza. He is “interviewed” by a BBC … I dunno what he is: employee/correspondent/ freelancer…about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza hospitals.

Until now, I didn’t know who he was although his comments seemed incendiary. Now I know, and it all becomes clear.

I wonder if the BBC will continue to show him…

Blaise on January 9, 2009 at 10:42 AM

The willingness of the civilized world to entertain terrorists as morally equivalent to their victims produces this kind of nonsense. Civilization always has its enemies – barbarians, reavers, pirates, anarchists, or terrorists. As soon as Civilization agrees to sit down at the table with these enemies, it concedes their basic argument: that civilization is flawed, and not entirely worth defending.

Western civilization (or at least the philosophy of its media and cultural elites) is driven by a deep sense of self-loathing, born of its devout belief that all cultures are equal, and therefore the obviously superior West must have terrible hidden flaws that reduce it to the same moral plane as Islamic fascists, or perhaps even lower. That’s one of the reasons the media always seems to be out to get Israel. They just can’t be as far above their enemies as they appear to be, so it’s imperative that the media find those “hidden flaws” and expose them. That’s how collateral damage during a long-delayed military response to terrorism becomes morally equivalent to randomly firing rockets at civilians. That’s also why the Western elite is so insistent that 98% of the Palestinian population are helpless, innocent waifs, being held captive by a tiny minority of terrorists. If a cop waded into a hostage situation, spraying bullets all over the place and killing twenty hostages along with three crooks, he wouldn’t be a hero, would he? No, he’d be at least as bad as the crooks – maybe worse, because the crooks were probably only taking hostages because the cruelties of capitalism left them no other way to feed their families. Why, the hero would be the brave reporter who blew the whistle on that trigger-happy cop!

Every conflict ends when one side loses the will to fight. There’s no particular reason Hamas, or any other terrorist group, should lose its will to fight at this point… not when they see CNN uncritically airing every Pallywood production, and not when the West’s answer to their savagery is: you’re probably wrong to want to kill us all.

Doctor Zero on January 9, 2009 at 11:07 AM

The tall doctor stops and points to the heart monitor as if he is playing to the camera. I have never seen any doctor during a code blue do that. Anyone with medical training will just glance at the monitor to see what heart rythm is happening. He is putting on a show for the camera. Also, I have never heard of a family member recording a code blue- especially of a child.

That kid sure doesn’t seem to have many injuries, does he? What did he die of? I would think that a victim of a bomb blast would be losing blood, be missing a limb, or something…

Yeah, I thought it was A-B-C (Airway, Breathing, Circulation). I guess these guys like to do it in reverse. Problem is, you can “circulate” all you want (even with lame chest compressions), but if the boy don’t get any O2, fuggetaboutit.

RMCS_USN on January 9, 2009 at 11:56 AM

One civilian casualty and CNN goes all weak in the knees. No shock and awe there. What that toad was doing to the corpse looked perverse, not believeable…I found myself yelling at those people: ‘Control your terrorists if you want your families to survive!’
I also get nauseated when I see women of the 21st century covering their faces and bodies. I’m not for sleaze, but come on…get with it women! How come the feminazis aren’t doing ‘missionary work’ in the ME to bring these women up to speed? It boggles the mind. Maybe they’re afraid that the men will stone them to death for promoting the western culture of the infidels. The simplest possible answer is often the valid one. Cowardice compromises their doctrine.

Michael Moore would be proud.

Nothing new to see here…

Don’t have a US nuclear accident threatening humanity? No problem! Make a movie about it and pretend it’s really gonna happen.

Can’t find real evidence of atrocities on the scale of Ghengis Khan in Vietnam? No problem! Make about 643 movies based what probably happened over there.

Can’t find evidence for people coming from apes? No problem! Make a movie in which apes come from people only to be opposed by “religious” apes who know the truth, but hide it.

If you can’t find it in reality, just make a movie about it.
