The earth has been steadily cooling for 10 years. Is that a trend? By the way...There's plenty of proof out there now that shows CO2 increases FOLLOW warming periods. They do not precede them. Gore is full of crap.

The truth or falseness of any statement about trends in the climate is not refuted or proved by the weather one day or even the weather for a whole season. Why are the global warming skeptics so eager to repeat the same obvious error that the global warming faithful make? One could come to the conclusion that most people don’t have the slightest clue what they are talking about.

thuja on January 8, 2009 at 9:13 AM
Au contaire, thuja, the 'mistake' is clearly only on the side of the man-caused global warmists who have yet to provide a single scientific proof of their assertions. The rest of us are simply saying that other factors e.g. sun other than human actions result in climate change what ever the change is.

In the Middle Ages during the Little Ice Age, the Thames used to freeze over every winter. They held a Frost Fair each year right on the Thames.

Some people revived the Frost Fair in 2003, but they haven't been able to hold it on the Thames. Looks like that may change. Perhaps during the first new Frost Fair on the Thames, they could freeze Al Gore in effigy.

During that time, you could walk from Dover to Calais on an ice bridge. Cool, huh? Sure they'll be crop failures, hypothermia and mass starvation in a new ice age, but there'll be some cool stuff too.

We have been in a cooling trend for nearly eleven YEARS thuja, while the global warming scare-mongers continue to promote this hoax just to collect more taxes. Will you ever wake up? By the way, this is the FOURTH climate scare this century.

CO2 does nothing to drive climate, its just the perfect target of a tax, you literally cannot live without making CO2, its what you exhale.

Extreme Alaska cold grounds planes, disables cars

Extreme temperatures — in Johnson's case about 60 below zero — call for extreme measures in a statewide cold snap so frigid that temperatures have grounded planes, disabled cars, frozen water pipes and even canceled several championship cross country ski races.

Alaskans are accustomed to subzero temperatures but the prolonged conditions have folks wondering what's going on with winter less than a month old.

Tell me again... why is it that Al Gore is not in jail?

Being an 11-year veteran of Arctic conditions, I decided to take a look at what -11 C would be in Fahrenheit. I was somewhat disappointed with my British brethren. It turns out to be just 12.2 F, as in +12.2 degrees.

Big deal -- it gets that cold in NJ too. The Brits are just not used to it; they share that trait with the folks in Florida and such, who panic and tend to drive into things when there's so much as a patch of ice on the road.

I wonder if record cold and snow in a place unused to it, like England, will cause any significant disbelief in AGW.

keep the change on January 7, 2009 at 8:45 PM

The truth or falseness of any statement about trends in the climate is not refuted or proved by the weather one day or even the weather for a whole season. Why are the global warming skeptics so eager to repeat the same obvious error that the global warming faithful make? One could come to the conclusion that most people don't have the slightest clue what they are talking about.

One good way to argue against carbon dioxide induced climate change is to argue that we have already maxed out the amount of heat in the climate attributable to carbon dioxide. I don't know what the evidence for it is, but I haven't really seen this argument made here. It would make sense to argue we've maxed out carbon dioxide related warming rather than making silly statements about how today's weather proves something about climate
or is an augury for buying lottery tickets today.

Meanwhile, in the bad timing for hysterical predictions category I nominate:

Dec. 26, 2008 - An Iditarod without snow, Florida's coastal towns lost forever to the Gulf of Mexico, wheat farmers in Kansas without crops.

What sounds like the climatic end of days could be coming a lot sooner than previously anticipated.

Competing headline:

January 06, 2009 - Minnesota sled dog race canceled because of too much snow

It's all Global Warmings fault.

Pay more in taxes to the government, so government scientists can pretend to control the weather. Does anybody ever ask, how does paying more in taxes solve the global warming problem, or is it just to get the liberals to shut up.

Not to worry though. if the current solar trends continue, it will soon be so cold, the snow piled so high, the sea ice so thick, that even the polar bears will move south.

Yes, but there’s all that free universal health care to cure their hypothermia.

What are you a sadist? You’re mocking the deaths of old-age British pensioners, many of whom fought the Nazis and liberated the concentration camps in Poland and Germany, to make a cheap political point about the NHS.

Laura was probably trying to highlight the hubris which leads to incorrect priorities. European governments promote all this global warming stuff, as a political tool to re-direct money from one group to another, and now reap the consequences. True, these consequences are dire for the people. That is a tragedy, although one the majority of the voters chose for themselves. I assume we will soon be facing the same situations here. My own liberal family members vote to make things worse here. I hope they get what they vote for.

Prince Charles is in the forefront of all this global warming hysteria. If I recollect correctly, about a year and a half ago he said we had about a year and a half before catastrophe hit. He should pay out of his private fortune for heat subsidies. It's alright for him to be dumb and blind, but not to influence the futures of others. To the few remaining friends we have in Britain, you must get rid of him and your Archbishop of Canterbury if you can. They have a bully pulpit and are dangerous to your health and welfare.

It is 4C (39F) in North Yorkshire right now. For someone growing up in northern New York, it doesn’t seem as if it should be very cold. However, it is. Between the constant dampness, and the ever-present wind, it just sucks. We regularly have wind gusts here that would qualify for hurricane force. The wind on an average day where I live is about 15MPH.

I agree, growing up and living in Harrogate, N. Yorks you really get the best and worst of the British climate. I remember in the early 1990's having to and rescue the snow plough driver after he got stuck in a snow drift. People here in Maryland look at me sideways when I talk about the regular 50+ MPH wind gusts!

My mother does appreciate the nice cold weather payouts she gets though. It pays for her to get her heating oil in and put a few quid in her pocket. It's nice that she is getting something back for a change after paying into the system all her life, rather than the spongers who give nowt and take all.

Right now, on a relatively warm day for January, it’s 11F, which would be -11.67C, and I’m sitting here in shorts and a golf shirt.

There are lots of people outside my window running around in shorts and golf shirts. Of course, that's probably because it's sunny and mid 70's here.

Fight global warming/cooling/whatever: Move to Arizona (where houses are really cheap now).

In Al Gore's world everything is Global Warming. Nothing is what it is because everything is what it isn't. And contrary-wise; what it is, it isn't, and what it isn't, it is. You see?

The AGW crowd is handling the record cold in 2 ways. First, they point out that weather is not the same as climate. That is, that while the short-term weather may be cold the long-tem climate could still be getting hotter. A valid theory, except they don't seem to make such nice distinctions when a 90 degree (F) day comes by in September. Then it's all Global Warming's fault plain and simple. So if a heat spell is a sure sign of Global Warming, why exactly is a cold spell not a sure sign of a coming Ice Age?
.
Their second avenue of attack is to say that Global Warming causes Global Cooling. That is, all that warming melted so much ice in the Artic that when the extra melt water comes south it turned our already cold water into snow. That sounds almost logical until you realize that if it was warm enough to melt the ice in the first place, shouldn't it be warm enough to keep the water in the form of rain when it finally gets here? In other words, water can’t simultaneously be above freezing and below freezing.

I am presently enjoying a balmy 26 below F here outside Wasilla. The high over the last 14 days was about 7 degrees. Today the high was 22 below.
I say balmy cause it's been 65 below and colder in the interior lately.
After you experience 75 and 80 below for a few weeks, 35 below is absolutely tropical. I've been here since 56 so I've seen some low temperatures in that time.
I heat the place with a wood stove primarily, with a Laser 73 for backup...like now. It burns a whopping 1/10 of a gallon an hour on low, and with the woodstove "on low", It stays about 75 in here at these temps.
And if I'm not mistaken, sunspots activity up on the 1st day of the new year, and have been appearing steadily since then...like every day. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/sunspots/ I was kinda concerned about it as things are gettin' cold enough already. what with all the Global Warming induced cooling.
