Surprise: NBC reschedules Coulter

posted at 2:15 pm on January 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Not one but two segments on tomorrow’s “Today” show, with a big kiss to Drudge posted on her website as thanks for getting “results.”

And to think, I thought this was a publicity stunt.

The wowOwow staff has a laugh at conservatives’ expense:

The surrounding controversy over the “Today” show appearance has only heightened attention around the author’s newest book, Guilty! Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America. While certain right-wing bloggers have suggested the “Today” show slight was evidence of a conspiracy among liberals to squelch attention to the book, the ensuing controversy about NBC has certainly played into the hands of the author and publisher.

Here she is this morning warming up for Lauer with Harry Smith in a little gladitorial combat over which side’s politicians are most likely to be shot by lunatics. Exit question: Is Media Matters right for once?

The problem is that NOBODY watches NBC, so whats the whoop?

Exit question: Is Media Matters right for once?

Maybe. That NBC quote sounded a bit too ‘good to be true.’

Slublog on January 6, 2009 at 2:23 PM

I never got the attraction to that woman. She’s kind of Roseanneish. Sometimes she’s funny but mostly just obnoxious.

scalleywag on January 6, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Is Media Matters right for once?

Nope. I have no problem assuming that Olby instituted the ban and that clearer heads prevailed.

Skywise on January 6, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Gotta love those unnamed “certain right-wing bloggers” who are always ready to dish out some crazy.

I wonder if they’re related to the ubiquitous “some” who are always ready to comment for the media?

Lehosh on January 6, 2009 at 2:25 PM

Maybe. That NBC quote sounded a bit too ‘good to be true.’

You could be right, but NBC’s self-absorption and hubris leaves me quite able to believe in it’s possibility.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2009 at 2:27 PM

Any press is good press

. . . especially when it’s a book you want to sell. It works with hate groups too, since they don’t advertise traditionally, articles about them make those seeking them aware of them. NBC would have been better off giving her the segment yesterday and nobody would have watched it anyways. They may see their best numbers when she does come on.

PastorJon on January 6, 2009 at 2:27 PM

The problem is that NOBODY watches NBC, so whats the whoop?

True, but that’s not a ‘problem’. ;-) Hey, at least she’s taking her accusations directly to the same people she quotes and accuses in her books!

Harry Smith was really condescending and dismissive of her in this interview and didn’t seem to understand anything she said.

As long as more books are sold, who cares. We are suddenly going to worry about what is true on the MSM or unnamed sources on either side?

*sigh*

Ann, allowing a question now and then without talking over the person like a female O’Reilly would do wonders for your image. Wonders.

Could that possibly be NBC’s motive?

Oh my goodness. Harry Smith pretty much ran through the whole book of standard cliche liberal arguments insults, including “If you want to be taken seriously” (as if no one does), and “Get down off your cross.”

He could scarcely let her finish a sentence, he was so anxious to lob the next insult (”sophomoric,” etc.).

Isn’t it cool – and interesting – that the only way penis-head Hairy Smitty could get back at Ann was closing with an attack on her from “other” conservative authors that diminish her depth which she roundly deflected with a sales-comparison.

I think, though, it would have been better if she’d made the point that all those Ivy-league conservative authors lack the skill to make her points succinctly.

It’s called “writing”. And she’s very good at it.

Ann Coulter proves that Matt Drudge just makes stuff up matters/gets results.
If anyone still wondered whether Drudge simply concocted his “insider” exclusive yesterday, complete with too-good-to-be-true anonymous quotes, about how NBC had banned Ann Coulter for life (a ban that apparently only existed in Drudge’s imagination), posted news that Coulter is booked to appear on NBC on Wednesday is likely all the proof you need.

Ann sure knows how to write, market, and sell books. However, best of all, she knows how to drive the left beyond their natural insanity. No one, but no one, can stick their finger into a wound, and enjoy it that much, and make it that lucrative. Still, her god is on her side.

CyberCipher on January 6, 2009 at 2:52 PM

NO. she needs to go on and COMPLETELY discredit those shills.

marklmail on January 6, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Harry knew she was going to outshine him. In his apprehensive state, he tried to be on the offensive. It didn’t work.

I believe that NBC bumped Ann because they thought the day’s news events were more important than just another Conservative Author who was a “Downer”. Sometimes bad press is just bad press. Thus, the decision to reschedule.

kingsjester on January 6, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Could Harry Smith been more dismissive of Ann Coulter??? The media treats Willam Ayers and child molesters better than conservative commenters like Ann. He acted like she was a complete idiot and a big joke and refused to take her or her opinions seriously. He was sooooo proud of himself at the end when he quoted the National Review. What a complete arse!!

Callie C. on January 6, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Ann, allowing a question now and then without talking over the person like a female O’Reilly would do wonders for your image. Wonders.

MadisonConservative on January 6, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Maybe. Though I doubt it.

Still, in this interview it was obvious that he wasn’t getting her point. By continuing to talk, even though she was talking over him, I’d say she at least got her point across to viewers. And she didn’t shout him down or get aggressive like Bill.

I thought this was actually fairly tame of her. She didn’t throw out names and made light of her “insane” comment, seemingly hoping she could get him in on the joke with her despite how futile that was.

Esthier on January 6, 2009 at 2:54 PM

I’m a fairly moderate person who has never been a big Ann Coulter fan. But I don’t think she comes off that badly here. When Harry Smith scoffed at the notion that liberals were to blame for the rise in illegitimacy, she should have asked him the question directly and force him to confirm, deny, or evade.

Sean68 on January 6, 2009 at 2:58 PM

The funny thing is that he doesn’t hear a word she says. He sticks to his own opinion, regardless of the conversation….the very thing she mocks liberals for doing.

Maxx on January 6, 2009 at 3:10 PM

I think the main problem with Ann is that sometimes, often actually, she buries a perfectly cogent point with her decidedly obnoxious demeanor. She makes great arguments and backs them up with easy to follow, substantive facts and analysis. But so often, she screws the pooch because of her unending need to make weak-minded ninnies expose themselves as such.

She’s a best-selling author, so she has no problem attracting eyes and ears. But I think she could be dragging a lot more independents and liberals to her side if she didn’t feel the need to make them feel like idiots so often.

I understand her dilemma. I am often misunderstood in the same way.

No problem. Just making a funny. How long do you think it will take the Today hosts to become condescending tomorrow?

kingsjester on January 6, 2009 at 3:27 PM

I wish they would ban Ann Coulter from more networks. She hasn’t had any insightful commentary in years. Whenever she addresses major Republican gatherings, all she does is bring unwanted attention and criticism on the event just to sell books. That’s why, for example, CPAC stopped inviting her to present at their annual conference.

It’s unfortunate. Coulter is a very bright woman and has it within her to really add to the conversation, even if she uses humor and rapier wit to do it. But instead, she has jumped the shark, nuked the fridge, and gone way, way over the top both in substance and in form, and has seriously harmed her credibility.

But guys… As funny as Coulter can be sometimes, she really does coarsen and poison the dialogue among conservatives. She also provides huge cannon fodder to the Democrats to make us look bad. And she does all of this for her personal gain alone — i.e. to increase her book sales with “shock value.” That isn’t a good thing.

Outlander on January 6, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Right, cause before she was on the scene, they didn’t try to make us look bad at all.

If you really think that playing by their rules will ever amount to anything, then try just seeing what the Left has done with Michelle. I’ve never seen Michelle resort to the tactics Coulter uses, not even once. I’ve never even seen her say anything unfair.

And yet, she’s a bigot, she’s homophobic, she’s abrasive and polarizing, or at least that’s what you’d think if you listened to the Left.

I’m not saying Coulter does the right thing. I’m just saying it’s ridiculous to think it would matter. Do the right thing because it means something to you but never because you think it will get you somewhere with the Left.

But one network insider claims it was the book’s theme — a brutal examination of liberal bias in the new era — that got executives to dis-invite the controversialist. “We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now,” a TODAY insider reveals. “It’s such a downer. It’s just not the time, and it’s not what our audience wants, either.”

lol LOL LOL – SO they are mad that Ann writes a book and accuses them of advocating for Obama in the election….. which they deney …. but then they kick her off the show because she is critical of Obama lol lol lol thats just funny – and 51% of Americans are to stupid to pick up on it

Harry Smith asked a question that Coulter cannot answer. There is no bigger self victimizer on earth than Coulter and those who claim they are under the thumb of the evil liberal leftists. That she doesn’t get that very simple fact speaks to her overall intelligence.

Esthier on January 6, 2009 at 3:38 PM

The left will twist anything a conservative says out of context, lie if necessary, and the left’s willing accomplices in the MSM will run with it. But surely you would agree with me that the impact of the left twisting Michelle Malkin’s words out of context to “slam” her does far less damage than Ann Coulter going on national television and proclaiming that “we should go to Afghanistan, kill their leaders and convert the public to Christianity!” (which got her fired from the National Review) or the inflammatory comments she made about John Edwards that got her canned from CPAC.

Outlander must love Juam McCain.
IlikedAUH2O on January 6, 2009 at 3:42 PM

I preferred him to Obama, but I didn’t “like” him. McCain isn’t ideologically conservative (e.g. supports amnesty, doesn’t support tax cuts, mccain-feingold) and is a guy who flies by the seat of his pants and makes brash decisions without thinking of the consequences (”I’m suspending my campaign!”). Neither trait is commendable.

Outlander on January 6, 2009 at 4:21 PM

I thought Harry Smith was extremely nervous and actually afraid that she would make him look bad. He was right!

I would take her to dinner, if only to put more meat on those bones.

Vince on January 6, 2009 at 4:26 PM

I love going to all of these left wing blogs and reading their posts about this story. They just don’t see any irony in simultaniously calling Ann “hate filled” etc. and professing how much they hate her. But then for the left the 1st ammedment only applies to people who agree with them. I have no doubt that by the end of tomorrow’s Today Show there will be a smoldering crater at the NBC studios.
