Alaska Senate poll: Murkowski 57, Palin 33

posted at 1:15 pm on January 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Almost a mirror image of the dKos poll last month. Is the bloom off the rose?

Pollster Dave Dittman just finished a statewide survey on a possible Palin-versus-Murkowski matchup – and Murkowski beats Palin, at least in this poll, hands down…

“And I think there would be a feeling, too, of overreaching — going too far, too aggressive, too much too soon — if Sarah decided to run for Senate,” Dittman said. “When you’ve already got someone there with seniority, who most people think is doing a good job, I think it would be a huge mistake.”…

A poll commissioned last month by the Web site dailykos.com showed Palin beating Murkowski 55 to 31 percent, although local pollster Dittman says he has concerns about the methods used to arrive at those numbers.

One or the other poll’s dramatically skewed, as nothing’s happened in the last three weeks to warrant a 25-point swing. Except, er, the allegations — since rescinded — that Alaska cops suspended their drug investigation into Levi Johnston’s mother until after the election. Or the new questions over how Johnston landed a job for which he might be ineligible under federal law. Or Bristol Palin giving birth, prompting another round of wrangling between the ‘Cuda and the media. I think that covers everything.

Exit question: If she doesn’t challenge Murkowski in 2010 or The One in 2012, how’s she going to stay on the national media’s radar until 2016? Fox News will have to set aside a special weekly kaffeeklatsch segment for her or something. Don’t let us down, Greta!

Benny,

What is this problem you have with Palin? It’s so…pathological. Watching you post here with such hatin on Palin is unseemly. What makes it so strange is that most people here who are not Palin fans have legitimate reasons why they think she is not the best choice in 2012. But you have no real explanation for it. We can’t tell if you are an Obamabot, a freelance leftist, paid Axelrod goon, militant gayboy (problem of the bottom variety), Romney fan, Paul fan, etc.

What’s the story with you? You are like a Michigan Wolverine fan hatin on the Buckeyes in your targeting of Palin but with no logic.

I’m talkin serious therapy needed. I could probably put together a real list of Republicans to truly hate on but Sarah Palin has got to be the least hateable human being in politics I may have ever met (shook hands with her).

This goes for a few others here. What is with you people? If you have another choice to carry the GOP banner, throw it out there and be positive about that choice. But this goin so negative on what appears to be a decent woman is unbelievable.

I’m guessing given Upinak thinks you are not in Alaska, you’ve got gay Seattlite written all over you.

Am I close?

Palin made a number of comments that were contrary to the official McCain campaign line, and each one of them made her sound like more of an idiot, not less. Sorry, she does not currently have what it takes to become President. The idea that McCain kept her from showing how awesome she is is a complete myth.

Yes Big ASS, she did say some dopey things. She really did a great job rallying folks in 3 months though didn’t she? Imagine what she could do if she actually ran her own campaign, with her message, surrounded by people loyal to HER and not muzzled by the McCain dorks?

Come on, every other republican in contention for VP had been running a campaign for 3 years. Palin comes in, and in 3 months does more for the ticket than any of the other guys could. Without Palin, McCain would have won Arizona,Mississippi,Tennesee & Utah- THATS IT.

therightwinger states that Mitt Romney is the right conservative for the job

therightwinger loves those “elites’

but yet Mitt Romney institutes government mandated health care
http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=8836

which not conservative at all

and then when rightwinger is called on it … he claims that the liberal legislature twisted his program … even though Romney is this vastly intelligent human being … but he doesn’t realize that the legislature would twist his health care proposal

Romney is a fine man … I voted for him in the primaries.

Next up is Bobby Jindal, also a fine man … Jindal has been the Governor of LA. since 2006 ( just as long as Palin has been governor) Now … Jindal is qualified because he is a “rhode’s scholar” … an “elite”

Yet … Bill Clinton was a rhode’s scholar … go figure

and then

to top it all off … we can’t compare anybody to Reagan because he was so great (which he was)

YET

YET

Reagan was a c student in college and was labeled an “amiable dunce” by the media, dems and some Republicans

You just can’t make this stuff up!

I’m imagining it, and it isn’t pretty. Every time she didn’t have the official McCain campaign script projected on a screen in front of her, she made a total fool out of herself for millions to see. That’s why they didn’t want her to give press conferences. It’s called damage control.

From the ADN:

Dittman (who used to poll for Frank Murkowski and whose wife contributed to Lisa) has a different take on it: “To me clearly it means that Alaskans like both of them and they like both of them right where they are,” he said.

meltenn on January 6, 2009 at 7:45 PM

Prove it. Show me something that says she wasn’t put aside or silenced? Other then reading the same speach over and over again in large groups.

upinak on January 6, 2009 at 7:31 PM

I’m not saying she wasn’t put aside. I’m saying she was put aside because she sounded like an idiot and made the campaign look bad. You’re contending that she was put aside for some other, more sinister reason (the “liberal” McCain didn’t want a strong conservative stealing his thunder … or something). I think you’re the one in need of some extra evidence.

Big S on January 6, 2009 at 7:46 PM

I don’t really understand your intention here but I will say that I voted for Mitt in the primaries, donated to his campaign and was angry as all hell when Huckster Doofus kneecapped him

And I currently follow the career of Jon Huntsman Jr. in Utah

joey24007 on January 6, 2009 at 6:48 PM

Thanks for not assuming I had ill intentions. I see how that impression could have been left.

Honestly, I wanted our guy to be Romney. Had I been given the opportunity, I would have voted for him in the primaries.

I’m just not convinced he’s electable. That’s all I meant. I’d like to be proven wrong, but prejudice against Mormons is fairly accepted, even among people who abhor prejudice.

And as to Jindal, I like him, but he’s no more proven himself than Palin has. I like him too, but like Palin, I think he needs a little more experience first. Then I think they could both dramatically change the party for the better.

I haven’t read through all the pages of this discussion, but I hope someone has taken the time to link to this article about these two polls.

The man behind this poll is Dan Fagan, a major league a$$hole — to borrow a phrase from Dick Cheney. Fagan’s blog The Alaska This guy hated Palin from the moment she ran for governor. Why? Because she challenged his old friend Frank Murkowski.

It should also be noted that Fagan’s website the Alaska Standard commissioned the poll, and guess who is one of the nine contributors to the Alaska Standard? You guessed it: Lisa Murkowski. Gee, a poll commissioned by her friend for the website she writes for comes up with dramatically different results from the poll commissioned one month prior.

Here’s an excerpt mentioning Fagan from Kaylene Johnson’s bio of Palin:

Meanwhile, the [Republican] old guard didn’t know what to make of the young populist candidate, especially when she began moving up in the polls despite their best efforts to either discredit her or support her opponents.

‘Anyone who was part of the establishment fought against her. [Talk show host] Dan Fagan clawed, fought, ridiculed, embarrassed, and deliberately misrepresented Sarah,’ Bailey said. Disparaging remarks on radio programs sometimes backfired. Fagan showed up at the Palin campaign headquarters one morning to clarify a point before his daily show. Waiting at the front desk was a man who took one look at Fagan and dug out his checkbook. ‘This is your fault,’ he said, waving his checkbook in the air. ‘Every time you bash this woman on the air, I’m down here writing another $500 check. Cut it out.’” [emphasis added]

He’s always been out to destroy her and her credibility. Here’s Palin ripping him a new one on his radio show. It’s quite amusing. And here is another interview she did on his radio show in which he bemoans the fact that she mandated that legislators speak with her about their spending requests. This was her method of reining in runaway spending, and it was effective. They used to be able to assemble their budgets behind closed doors and make back room deals and then rubber stamp it. Fagan whines about legislators who feel that Palin is “shaming them” by making them explain why they want millions of dollars for pet projects in their districts.

Oh, and he is also the jerk that Palin’s Lt. Governor Sean Parnell mentioned in one of the private emails that was released after it was hacked. In that particular email, Parnell bemoaned the fact that Dan Fagan had targeted him and was slinging crap at him. Parnell had tried to change Alaska’s lifelong Congressman Young in the Republican primaries. Idiots like Dan Fagan like keeping corrupt old pork politicians in place.

I’m sorry to say this, but the Alaska GOP establishment is everything that’s wrong with the GOP. Fagan is the voice of the Alaska GOP establishment. The guy is a gutless worm. If he and his kind hate Palin, then she’s fine by me.

Balderdash! Palin did fine in front of millions, and fluffed up an interview with Katie Couric. Palin is FAR from the Tina Fey impersonation that the Medioso wants you to believe. There is something genuine about her that speaks directly alot of the electorate. She did not take the conventional roll of being married to someone famous or a politician,or a millionaire. She started in the famous “Grassroots” that liberals put so much emphasis on. She worked for everything she has, as do her family. If there is no trail to be seen, they blaze a new one and the others follow.

Sarah Palin speaks more for the average person in America in values, work ethic, & monetarily.

Or are we to believe the Hawaiin born African-Kansas heritage Indonesian raised private schooled Ivy League Lawyer-Community Organizer who hasn’t won an election without getting opponents names tossed of the ballot until 2008, is who most Americans can understand?

Sorry about the typos. I was typing fast. I’m still reading through the old comments. I can’t believe that no one pointing this out yet.

Truly did no one notice that Dan Fagan’s Alaska Standard, which Lisa Murkowski writes for, commissioned this poll? And did no one notice that Dan Fagan is the one who made a stink about Levi Johnston’s apprenticeship. And did anyone point out that Johnston has now left his apprenticeship and is working full time on his GED because of Fagan’s to-do about this. And has anyone pointed out that Johnston’s father has stated that he was the one who got his son the job, not the governor or anyone in the Palin family. The governor said that she wrote a letter of recommendation for Johnston, and that was it. I suppose some bonehead will claim that letters of recommendation are unethical!

And did anyone point out that ASRC is a private company. If they gave Johnston preferential treatment, that’s their business. But from the looks of it, they had a lot of positions open and were willing to train people. An Alaskan job site noted this about ASRC:

Lots of turnover/lots of openings. ASRC, also referred to as AES or APC, is the largest contractor on the western slope for ConocoPhillips. They hire everything from warehouse workers, loader operators and roustabouts to mechanics, office aides, fire & gas technicians, HSE workers, plus many, many more entry-level and professional positions.

Heard on the slope… ASRC has several new contracts coming on line in 2007 with Pioneer and Shell Oil. I also heard that they are having a difficult time finding experienced hires so now must hire inexperienced/entry level applicants and train them on the job.

So, it would seem that they were more than willing to hire and train people like Johnston while he finished his GED. But now Johnston’s father says that “his son quit because of pressure he felt about having the ASRC job without having a high school diploma.”

Way to go, Fagan! Another person out of a job!

You know, I’m beginning to wonder if the Hate Palin crowd doesn’t have a problem with women. Perhaps its a Freudian thing or something. So much lashing out; so much repressed rage. Very sad.

littleguy on January 6, 2009 at 8:31 PM

That’s because there’s never been a VP candidate quite like her…If you know what I’m saying.

Hey, Palin used to work for KTUU also! She was the weekend sportscaster.

ramrocks on January 6, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Yep. Personally, I don’t require perfection from a candidate. Everyone has faults, but not everyone is a natural like Palin.

littleguy on January 6, 2009 at 8:23 PM

You remember those photos of Palin visiting some wounded soldiers in the hospital? I do.

If I was one of those soldiers, I would have been cynical figuring she is just photo-opting and using me for politics. But she is the type that after talking to you and exuding sincerity and feelings and just by being there as an American woman, I’d have somehow hobbled up, limped to the recruiting office and tried to reenlist. Of course, she’d probably get me back to the bed and tell me I did my part and my sacrifice is appreciated. That’s the type of person she is. You just oozes sincerity and an American femininity and the ability to convince you she has a servant’s heart despite her ambitions. She actually believes her job is to serve the people.

Hey, Benny, for shear entertainment value nothing beats what’s going on concerning Barry’s vacant Senate seat, not to mention the Richardson and Panetta “distractions”.

I’m not saying she wasn’t put aside. I’m saying she was put aside because she sounded like an idiot and made the campaign look bad.

She made the campaign look bad by comparison to well she looked (and no I’m not talking about that type of ‘looks’).

kcewa on January 6, 2009 at 8:38 PM

how ‘well’ she looked I mean.

Perhaps she makes them feel inadequate or just unnerved by her good looks. The combination of beauty and strength like that is psychologically an interesting mix. I don’t think the reaction to her would have been quite as intense (or at least not in the same way) if she had looked more like Janet Napoletano.

Oh my, McCain is yesterdays news, Team Sarah has 63000+ members, there is a weekly radio show devoted to Sarah and Sarah is still #1 in the hearts and minds of the base. What am I missing here–that she can’t possibly win a Senate race in 2010 that she probably won’t run in anyway. Hypothetical on steroids.

Or perhaps we just think she’s a lightweight, and don’t understand her appeal. That, and the fact that I hope she isn’t the 2012 nominee. That’d be embarassing.

therightwinger on January 6, 2009 at 8:51 PM

The destruction of Palin’s family and record is just disgusting. It’s gone on long enough. Now we must stand and fight back.

ramrocks on January 6, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Poll or no poll, good or bad, it is time to fight for the principles we believe in. We may have to do it the Palin way by taking down some in our own party first.

No more licking our wounds, the game is on for 2010.

PS. I do not think Palin should run for senate either. Run for governor.

Surf around YouTube and you’ll find dozens of these little videos that ordinary people took of her. She has the personal touch and relates to ordinary people as only an ordinary person could. Like this video taken by a lady who got Palin to record a personal message to her little son. Or just see here, here, or here. That last one is my favorite. If you look next to the video, you’ll see the link to the article that the young gal wrote about it, which was published in the local Wasilla newspaper.

Then vote against her in the primary and if that doesn’t work vote against her in the election. See how easy! What do you hope to gain by coming to this site and opining about the embarrassment that is Sarah Palin? Here, you have her die hard supporters, those who think she has honest potential and loons that pretend that they can’t stand her but are obviously afraid of her. If they weren’t they wouldn’t work so hard to keep this garbage going at a time in history when nothing is at stake.

Cindy Munford on January 6, 2009 at 9:18 PM

Boy, when I was 10 I wrote down on a history exam that Clement Attlee was PM of Britain during WWII (it was Churchill.) So I am to be branded a total idiot regarding Churchill. British history and WWII history (I’m not by the way.) Does anybody, even the Obama morons out there really believe that a governor of an American state does not know which newspapers she reads, that she never reads newspapers or periodicals at all, or that she is totally illiterate. Again let’s nominate Levi Johnston for not only public enemy #1 in America but why not the world. When the world is inhabited by such great moral humanitarians as Ayres, Khalidi, Wright, Rezko and Odinga, Levi has no competition to be put on such a pedestal. Sarah, you should be so fortunate to have a future son-in-law who is held in such high regard by the MSM, Marxists and the nutroots. All devil-worshippers unite behind Levi-he’s a high-school ‘dropout’-my god he’s the next Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele. Hallejuah.

Dave R. on January 6, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Poptech doesn’t realize that Sarah Palin went to so many schools because she couldn’t afford an Ivy League school.

Of course she could have had a full ride at any college and have all the credentials of an intellectual if she was a person of color, lesbian, handicapped, brown noser. Somehow I think Governor Palin pays as she goes is better for it. My wife still owes $40,000 with student loans for her masters degree from a private school. I owe $0 and paid as I went, through 3 schools and 5 years and have a masters. I chose the Palin path. Can’t say I regret it.

Poptech on January 6, 2009 at 10:47 PM

Well, based on your logic, Caroline Kennedy should get a Senate seat because she graduated from Harvard. Of course, both Princess Caroline and your homeboy Mittens had the money and famous daddies, which helped them get into an ivy-covered school and pay for it. Sarah had neither of those advantages. I think that she’s done quite well for herself without them. Frankly, I admire self-made people like Palin more than I admire Princess Caroline and Mittens, because Sarah had to actually work for everything she has.
