Alaska Senate poll: Murkowski 57, Palin 33

Almost a mirror image of the dKos poll last month. Is the bloom off the rose?
Pollster Dave Dittman just finished a statewide survey on a possible Palin-versus-Murkowski matchup – and Murkowski beats Palin, at least in this poll, hands down…
“And I think there would be a feeling, too, of overreaching — going too far, too aggressive, too much too soon — if Sarah decided to run for Senate,” Dittman said. “When you’ve already got someone there with seniority, who most people think is doing a good job, I think it would be a huge mistake.”…
A poll commissioned last month by the Web site dailykos.com showed Palin beating Murkowski 55 to 31 percent, although local pollster Dittman says he has concerns about the methods used to arrive at those numbers.
One or the other poll’s dramatically skewed, as nothing’s happened in the last three weeks to warrant a 25-point swing. Except, er, the allegations — since rescinded — that Alaska cops suspended their drug investigation into Levi Johnston’s mother until after the election. Or the new questions over how Johnston landed a job for which he might be ineligible under federal law. Or Bristol Palin giving birth, prompting another round of wrangling between the ‘Cuda and the media. I think that covers everything.
Exit question: If she doesn’t challenge Murkowski in 2010 or The One in 2012, how’s she going to stay on the national media’s radar until 2016? Fox News will have to set aside a special weekly kaffeeklatsch segment for her or something. Don’t let us down, Greta!

None of that matters to the trolls. Otherwise, we’ve been preaching to the choir and/or having a cathartic moment.

Not a chance. But hey, he’s the Messiah. He can do whatever he wants.
Exactly. Arkansas isn’t exactly a large state. In fact, it’s probably got the biggest hick reputation of all of the states, and yet Bush is the hick, and Alaska doesn’t count.
Esthier on January 6, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Not if the GOP nominee supports any of the above. Which was the case with McCain. Which was why he lost.
kcewa on January 6, 2009 at 4:12 PM
Oh Benny… lets all talk about this!
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!
FYI.. Native Villages are notorious for NOT paying for their Fuel BEFOREHAND! Most “fuel staitions” will not send out fuel unless they have 75% or All of the funds to get them their fuel. The State has NOTHING to do with fuel and getting it to the Natives and their “lands”.
YOU are NOT an Alaskan… You have NOW proven that. If you LIVED in Alaska, you would KNOW that!
I am calling you out as a fake and a liar saying you are an Alaskan. And Using the ADN which is a California based paper to give me new or KTUU who talks on both sides of their mouth is … in a word. Stupid!
You are the complete Troll!

“Natural disasters” (which, apparently, include normal snowstorms – Anchorage gets less snow per year than where I grew up in the Northeast) are unique to Alaska? Who knew?

I said this time and time again throughout the campaign and since then. But when I say it, it’s not a valid point. Now many conservatives are realizing how much such banter diminishes the sitting Governor.
Pointing out sexist behavior and trends is not PC. It’s prudent, especially when it is directed at one’s own candidate. That goes for race too. Otherwise Ken Blackwell should just whip it out and win the RNC chairmanship.

Of course, “normal” is in the eyes of the beholder, but in 2001, the year Malia Obama was born (I think), Malia was among the 500 most frequent baby girl names, ahead of Pamela, Irene, Marilyn and Elisa. In 1996, Sasha was #380, ahead of Britney, Ann and Lucy. The Social Security Administration has a nice database of baby name frequencies in case anyone is interested.
Just another useless factoid.

I’m not disputing that it’s pretty cold in some places in Alaska. The more remote places there are colder than most places where anyone lives in the lower 48. It’s weather, and it changes, but shouldn’t be used to prop up a candidate.

upinak on January 6, 2009 at 4:32 PM
Nothing’s really all that normal about a snowstorm.
And I wasn’t saying that they only occur in Alaska but that dealing with them, the way Alaskan governors have to, is unique. The missing roads being one issue in particular.
In fact, it’s all related to the fact that Alaska is our largest state and has a very small population. Those two put together do present a unique challenge to handling natural disasters.
Esthier on January 6, 2009 at 4:40 PM
Surely we can do better than Palin. I realize people like her personally. I do as well. But leader of the free world? I think not.
Plenty of more qualified and informed people are up to the task.
Palin is too nice for the game of national politics.
therightwinger on January 6, 2009 at 4:40 PM
Silly girl, you ought to read the article linked instead of falling back on your clichéd, anti-Native racist diatribe.
Overcoming the hardships presented by early freezes, blocked barges, and the additional costs of flying in fuel don’t have anything to do with village finances. Of course, the fact that fuel costs in western Alaska rose nearly 50 percent last year while nationwide oil and gasoline prices dropped doesn’t help their situation.
So much for sarah’s awesome leadership in the face of Alaska’s harsh environment.
Oh yes… whining that the ADN and KTUU are liberal sources is an amusing response to an article published in the News-Miner.

Anti Native? LOL, sure… if you wanna think that. But I have worked for Kuukpik and Chenega as well as ASRC, who are great Native Corps.
WTF are you kidding Benny. Am I lying? Nope. Here is a PDF of people “migrating” due to fuel cost. I guess you should STFU and read something on it … calling me anti native, is just saying you don’t understand the dynamics of Alaska. In which they have been “migrating” out of their Villages for about 10 yrs. Sarah has nothing to do with gas prices, idiot.
Also:
They even have a committee with Ex Gov. Murkowski concerning Geothermal and Biomass for Communities who have issues with GETTING FUEL!
What a concept.. a Ex Gov. who was a complete waste of Carbon.. on a Energy board when he did NOTHING for the Natives while he was a Senator AND a Gov. and now he is on the Exxon Board of Directors, but I guess you wouldn’t understand that huh Benny.
Interesting observation there loser. Oh, how do you get to Hatchers Pass again.. I forget! LMFAO!

joey24007 on January 6, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Palin cannot do or become whatever she sets out to do. She has serious limitations. That’s a nice sentiment for your kids, but not for the leader of free world. The real Republican party should expect much, much better.
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:06 PM
She has serious limitations.
Such as?
BillyRayValentine on January 6, 2009 at 5:07 PM
I know she has very little to nothing to do with the price of oil. We spent a few threads arguing about this over the summer, and I’m glad you’ve finally stated a position consistent with my arguments from back then. The global market is too big for Alaskan policies to have much of an effect on oil prices.
Now, in a small, relatively isolated market that has additional costs, a governor’s policies can have huge effects.
Back a few months ago, you and other Palin boosters were claiming that she could influence the global market a great deal, and now you’re arguing that her policies won’t influence local, isolated markets. It just doesn’t make sense, unless the goal is to sacrifice the laws of supply and demand – not to mention logic – at the altar of the Great Sarah Palin.
Big S on January 6, 2009 at 5:08 PM
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:06 PM
What do you mean by “real” Republican Party? Please clarify.
kingsjester on January 6, 2009 at 5:09 PM
I’ll start with her lack of understanding of critical and complex issues and her ability to clearly communicate.
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:10 PM
For her to succeed on the national stage, perceptions will have to change. GHWB was supposed to be a big wimp, until he changed that belief (partially by making Dan Rather look like a tool). President Reagan was supposed to be a nutjob who was an empty suit. People didn’t believe that because he could communicate and inspire outside the influence of a much stronger media in the 80’s.
There is a large percentage of Americans that follow the latest trends, that learn through soundbites and treat the political system like a sport they really don’t pay close attention to other than to get the scores. And these people vote.
She has an uphill battle, that’s for sure. And the MSM will try to paint her as a bible-thumping, backwoods hick all the way. So far, it’s worked.
Asher on January 6, 2009 at 5:11 PM
Boy am I slow! It has taken me this long to figure out that Hot Air is like Hannity and Colmes, with Ed playing Hannity and Allahpudit playing Colmes. AP (or Colmes doppleganger), is so desperate for anything that will offend conservatives to get posts on HA, that he will push any story, no matter how unsourced or unchecked, to get a rise out of people. AP, I’ve been skeptical of you for a while, but now you have ruined it for me. I don’t watch H&C anyore because of the inane spoutings of the Colmes side.

When the pipeline is built… you don’t think that will effect the price?
upinak on January 6, 2009 at 5:13 PM
I agree. Kid’s trying to be responsible and provide for his family, his dad helps him get a good job, he proves himself to be a good worker, and it gets cut out from under him because some guy hates the Guv. And for anyone who argues that Fagan was ‘doing his job’: I’ll have to call bs. The guy hates her, and did this only in an attempt to smear her. Legitimate criticism and debate is fine (healthy, even), hatred like his is not.
meltenn on January 6, 2009 at 5:13 PM
In my view, real Republicans are contemplative, serious people who understand why they hold the principles they do. They see beyond hackneyed talking points, don’t suffer fools gladly and demand from others what they themselves are willing to give.
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:13 PM
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:13 PM
So, how does that disqualify Gov. Palin and those who believe she has a future on the national scene?
kingsjester on January 6, 2009 at 5:16 PM
Not as much as its boosters do. It’ll help Alaska sell its oil, but what will be a financial boon for a relatively small number of people in Alaska will not really change the overall global equation by much. I think the estimates for the effect of this plus the ANWR drilling proposals top out at somewhere between 1-2 dollars per barrel of crude if you use extremely optimistic assumptions.
Big S on January 6, 2009 at 5:16 PM
Sure, by having a world wide audience where she could push the US to use more of its own oil. As a governor, she doesn’t really have that pulpit. And even as a VP, there’s no guarantee she would have been successful, but with oil prices where they were, it might not have fallen on deaf ears.
Still, as McCain’s VP, she couldn’t really say much as it went directly against what he believes.
Esthier on January 6, 2009 at 5:17 PM
Or maybe his hiring prevented someone who would ahve worked just as hard but was, you know, qualified, from getting a position. It’s kinda like the “they’re stealing our jobs” arguments that anti-immigration activists like to use.
Big S on January 6, 2009 at 5:18 PM
You know … there are probably at least 45 states that wished that had somebody like Palin as Governor … which is her current job.
For example … Corzine is my governor and that’s like having a team coached by Rich Kotite
joey24007 on January 6, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Are the Anti-Palin folks paid to come here and trash her? It’s nice to see that at least some of them aren’t bothering to pretend to be conservatives anymore. I am seeing names I haven’t seen since the election. I can understand Gov. Palin’s defenders because of a vested interest but why do you haters push so hard? There is no election, she’s not putting herself forward into current events, she just living her life and doing her job, so what the heck is wrong with you people?
Cindy Munford on January 6, 2009 at 5:20 PM
Which issues do you mean: issues like whatever Charlie Gibson says the “Bush Doctrine” is today? Without clear examples, it’s easy to make a blanket statement like that.
Plus, if you’re going to knock someone’s communication skills, don’t split your infinitives.
Snowed In on January 6, 2009 at 5:20 PM
Please stop comparing Palin to Reagan. It’s not even close. Reagan was a serious student of public policy and understood history. Yes, he got a little rattled at times. But he genuinely frightened the far left because he knew of what he spoke. I cannot agree with those who claim the far left is scared of Palin. For many, she engenders contempt.
johnnynucleo on January 6, 2009 at 5:20 PM
I.e., the palin fanboy effect. Fortunately for the future of this great nation, in practical terms the palin fanboys are few in number. The rest of us just enjoy the comedic relief she provides.

Like the way millions of undeserving students get into college every year?
Kinda like how Chelsea Clinton gets a gig as a “Wall St. Consultant” … when somebody who busted their ass in business school is selling hotdogs on the corner?
Kinda like how Caroline Kennedy is considered for a Senate seat?
Would it be similar to the way Harry Reid’s kids get great land deals?
Would it almost be like Barack Obama getting a mansion from a slumlord?
Almost in the same manner in which Lisa Murkowski currently serves in the Senate?
Not very different from Jack Murtha’s brother getting defense contracts?

That 1/4th does not have a constant phalanx of media pitbulls watching their every move and misstep. Levi does.
When the LA/LB harbors were hiring longshoremen, tens if not hundreds of thousands of people were trying to get fewer than 5,000 jobs. In a city like LA that means a lot of those people had to falsify diplomas, arrest records, licenses, etc. Many of them got away with it to some degree.
Industry dealing with interstate commerce, transport, fueling, etc should and after 9/11, often does require HS diploma. The sad fact is that many of our backbone industries are populated with under-educated and uneducated people. Lots of those guys and gals are really, really good workers. Lots of them are screw ups.
Levi can never get away being anywhere near the screw up lots of his colleagues are bound to be.

You’re so cute when its obvious that you’re just making things up as you go along…
ASRC spokespersons declined to comment on Levi Johnston directly, citing employee privacy.
In a written statement, the company said its electrical apprenticeship program eligibility requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, “but this is not a requirement mandated by the federal government.”
The statement also says, “The information provided by the applicant to the company is relied upon to be true and correct.”
benny shakar on January 6, 2009 at 5:39 PM
Are we talking federal guidelines or upinAK’s? Your anecdotal and lax considerations are not the issue.

Look, I know nothing. You know everything. The kid still needs a job and a diploma.

kingsjester – Nice job with the ad hominem attack. I’m not a psuedo intellectual anything. Yes, I went to college. And graduate school. I’m fortunate to have parlayed that into ownership of a relatively successful business. I hope my kids become serious students and working professionals as well. I don’t understand why a thorough understanding of a topic and intellectual curiosity is viewed as a negative trait. Palin is bright, but in my view she lacks the serious substance that I want from my elected officials. And I have nothing concrete to support my suspicion, but I sincerely doubt Palin penned those words without assistance.

As did Palin. They too own a business.
Look, I’d prefer it if she came out with more substance, but I’m still convinced she has substance. You seem to be deciding that she doesn’t have any, but you’re basing it on nothing. That’s why you were called a pseudo intellectual elitist, because that’s what they’re doing.

I saw a poll last week that 52% of women said Obama would be a better husband to them than there present husband. This means that half of the people are crazy fruit loop crazy. God help us !!!

You were talking about Palin’s speech as though there was some significance to the fact that she likely didn’t write the words above.

Proof that you only argue against a ghost image of me that was formed by your twisted-foil rabbit ear antennae. Get DTV, chick. Your reception is ****ed.
I want the best for Levi and his family. That’s my point. You would have him slog along because he can get away with doing the bare minimum.
I’ve never seen a woman piss into the wind with such aplomb.

Is the klassy daughter going to get married? It might get her poll numbers up a point or 2.

Every politician has help with speech writing. It takes a communicator to deliver a speech effectively. That speech happened to be delivered at the Republican National Convention. Communication takes many forms. I know. I worked in Corporate Communications for over 30 years. Sarah Palin is a neo-phyte on the national scene. But, judging from the size of the crowds who turned out to hear her speak during the election and the Georgia run-off, she is off to a very good start. Regarding the ad hominem attack, I was mistakenly reacting to the dismissive tone of your entries. I presumed you hung out at those web sites. My bad.
