Video: The obligatory “Gran Torino” trailer

Anyone seen it? I made the mistake of checking Wikipedia for a plot synopsis and was blasted with an atomic spoiler (a dumb one, too).

One of Ace’s commenters says it looks like “Dirty Harry” meets “About Schmidt.” I was going to say “Walking Tall” meets “Stand and Deliver.” Or “Death Wish” meets “Lean On Me.” Or “Straw Dogs” meets “Bad Santa.” Violent curmudgeon + plucky youngster = crazy delicious redemption. You know the type.

It must be good to have brought Ed Anger out or retirement. Exit quotation: “I give his movie 50 stars and 13 stripes!” Click the image to watch.

First movie in a while I’ve wanted to see.

Spirit of 1776 on January 5, 2009 at 5:49 PM

I saw it this weekend. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone.

joewm315 on January 5, 2009 at 5:49 PM

I saw it.

If not 3.75 stars out of 4, then 4 solid stars. Fantastic movie in nearly all aspects. Hilarious, poignant, and fulfilling.

MadisonConservative on January 5, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Great movie! I will also recommend it.

“Get off my lawn”- Clint Eastwood

Can’t wait to see it. Dang shure hate to see Clint Eastwood is getting so old. Man time flies.

One of Ace’s commenters says it looks like “Dirty Harry” meets “About Schmidt.”

So he pees on the bad guys with his “gun” ? Now that’s awesome.

lorien1973 on January 5, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Saw this the other day and absolutely loved it. Of all the Eastwood movies I’ve seen (about a dozen, so not many) this is probably my favorite.

Anything with Clint in it is GOLDEN!

Did I hear that right? Is his character’s name Walter? He looks like Jeff Dunham’s Walter.

“Get off my lawn”

Haha, almost as good as:

“This is the AK-47 assult rifle, the preferred weapon of your enemy, it makes a distinct sound when fired at you, so remember it.”

Tony737 on January 5, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I wasn’t sure about this one. I love Clint (In the Line of Fire and Kelly’s Heroes are two of my all-time favorite movies), but didn’t want to be force-fed some political “message.” Is it political? Any whiff of “angry old conservative xenophobe learns to embrace diversity” going on? I hate that kind of heavy-handed messaging cr@p.

Actually, quite the opposite. More like “angry old conservative hates the Hmong for the way they maintain their houses, but gets a taste of their food and uses racial epithets in a friendly rather than derogatory way”.

If anything, it shows that just because someone has an old-fashioned attitude doesn’t mean they’re racist or bigoted or what have you, and that a lot less sensitivity makes everyone get along a lot better. Very politically incorrect and really rips on new-age yuppies trying to shove perfectly capable old folks into homes and treating them like children.

I’ll go see just about any Eastwood film. This one is no exception.

Anyone with stones big enough to name a movie after a POS Ford, probably is worth the risk of admission…

Wyznowski on January 5, 2009 at 6:16 PM

As with a lot of late period Clint movies, Gran Torino’s appeal is all about playing against audience expectations of his persona in what are admittedly a series of classic stock film genre situations of its ilk(nothing wrong with that, at least in a craftsman’s hands like Clint’s). Even at this late date in his career, Eastwood is a cool breeze.

Ditto. But I heard it was great.

Jaibones on January 5, 2009 at 6:27 PM

I’d call it a cross between Sling Blade and Archie Bunker.

Anyone remember an SNL skit with Robert Duvall call “Who’s more grizzled?” Clint makes me think of that.

What were they suppose to call it? “Chevy Vega” or “Chevy Chevette”.

Or maybe “Plymouth Reliant”, how about “Dodge Omni”.

Ford is Great. Yes, I have Blue Blood. Ford Blue.

Or, Rosebud is the sled.

I am inclined to see it, but it will probably wait until it hits Netflix.

I’ve seen every Clint Eastwood movie ever made.(Didn’t like some) And I will be seeing this one.

Zaire67 on January 5, 2009 at 6:31 PM

There is really no Clint Eastwood movies that are bad, just some better than others, even the monkey movies are watchable.

My least favorite was Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and that was because I liked the book better.

Mr. Joe on January 5, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Yawn.

No thanks. Clan of the Cave Bear is on cable-on-demand this month. And next month its Ferngully, and after that Iron Eagle(s) I through XXXVIII, so….

Mike D. on January 5, 2009 at 6:37 PM

I had the wonderful honor of meeting Clint Eastwood while I was at DLI. He was scary intimidating in person, but also very down-to-Earth.

I look forward to seeing this movie, but it might be a Netflix deal – we used up our movie-theater budget to see The Spirit. It sucks, but I hope it’s worth the wait.

Anna on January 5, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Jaibones on January 5, 2009 at 6:28 PM

I liked Apollo 13, a lot, ’cause I love techy stuff, but how could he screw up a movie based on that material?

This Frost/Nixon thing looks truly bizarre. It just seems so odd to me that someone would make a movie that puts a former president, however flawed, on the same footing as a smug journalist. Frank Langella’s version of Nixon (from what I’ve seen in the clips) looks weak, especially the voice. (Of course, I may be biased since I can only ever picture Langella in a satin cape… )

Who will go see a movie about a much-maligned President being interviewed by a journalist 30 years ago? Does anyone today think journalists are heroic? And, isn’t GWB the new Nixon in terms of liberal outrage? I don’t see how this is supposed to be entertainment, even for libs.

(My disclaimer is that the first presidential campaign I ever worked on was the ‘72 campaign and I worked for Nixon. I don’t regret it. McGovern would have been a disaster.)

Y-not on January 5, 2009 at 6:42 PM

I haven’t seen it yet. But, all I need to know is:

It has Old man Clint Eastwood telling kids to GET OFF MY LAWN! at the point of an M1 Garand. This is almost perfection – all it lacks is a fixed bayonet.

That one moment alone is probably worth a ticket…

My friends, I don’t care in the least. Merely pointing out yet another hilarious example of IOKIYAR.

benny shakar on January 5, 2009 at 7:23 PM

This movie is awesome.

Is Clint’s character, Walter, a “racist”?

Well it’s clear that he’s more than willing to use any and every racial epithet that I’ve ever heard (and a few I’d never heard before) so by the liberal definition, he certainly is – because of what he says.

But does he judge anyone based on the color of their skin, or their ethnicity?

No.

So by the conservative definition, he’s certainly not – because of what he does.

Also, he’s an equal opportunity hater. When he tears into the Irish frat boy it’s just as hilarious as when he tears into the black gang bangers.

And for that reason alone, it’s awesome. It’s great to see a movie where a man’s character is based not on how he talks, but what he does. How he treats people is more important than what he says to them.

But the focus of the movie is actually life and death, with a little bit of redemption. The focus of the movie is not racism, is not multiculturalism, it’s not even about vengence really. It’s about American ideals. And being a Man. Hard to describe really.

Seriously though, it’s fantastic. Everyone should watch it.

Went to his 50th birthday party at the old Paragon in Aspen back in the 80s. I thought he was ancient then. Now I’m older than he was.

Great actor and director. Can’t wait to see this film.

Charles Martel on January 5, 2009 at 7:32 PM

Yeah. The M1 Garand in an urban setting as a self defense weapon would be awesome. 8 rounds of quickly repeating high holy hell. And if you run out of ammo swing it like a baseball bat.

BowHuntingTexas on January 5, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Great movie, at least four stars. The dialogue is so politically incorrect, it’s amazing it was made. The movie is funny, sad, horrifying and has an amazing tear jerking finish. In short, just like life. Enjoy it and the song at the end written by Clint.

Eastwood movies use to be part of our Christmas Day. I like all of them except the ones with Sandra What’s-Her-Face. The character sounds just like my dad, an equal opportunity disparager but hired a black gentleman who had been in prison for murder and made sure that regardless of hard times, he always had a pay check.

I get the impression that Clint doesn’t actually shoot anybody, which would be disappointing. I still want to see it, but putting out a trailer with Clint pointing an M1 Garand but not shooting someone is almost false advertising. Or something.

Hollowpoint on January 5, 2009 at 10:42 PM

Watched it two weeks back… great movie.. the ending was preditable.

The final song is poignant. Great theme. pretty good acting by the youngsters. and a very good job by an aging thespian.

GET OFF MY LAWN !!!!!!!!!!! I think those words are indicative of the man fiercely proud of his independence and protective of his personal property.. the words of a free man.

nagee76 on January 5, 2009 at 10:45 PM

I saw a few times at http://www.JustIn.tv. Very good. Clint is being a man, protecting young ones who wouldn’t stand a chance without him. Teaching a boy how to be a man, and also fighting old demons that he carries from the war. Very good film.

The best last a long time. That includes actors. It also includes messages about the importance of basic human rights, where human beings are entitled to being treated like human beings. However, when certain humans who want or feel entitled to more than they deserve, need to be dealt with in a manner that minimizes their importance or existence to maintain the basic balance of mankind.
