Showdown: Senate rejects Burris’s certificate of appointment

No signature from the secretary of state means no admittance means a glorious Democratic meltdown on the floor tomorrow.
CNN’s Susan Roesgen reports that Burris has filed a motion, a “writ of mandamus,” with the Illinois Supreme Court to force the Illinois secretary of state to sign the certificate. There court has not yet issued a ruling on the issue.
Would a man shameless enough to take to the pulpit at a Chicago church to demand his appointment be shameless enough to show up tomorrow and force Reid to turn him away at the door for the cameras? Answer: Of course he would, silly.
Here’s a snippet from today’s presser. Reid swore on “Meet the Press” yesterday that he never told Blago not to appoint the three black legislators who were under consideration. Too late, Harry: The Senate’s now “the last bastion of plantation politics,” according to race-healer Bobby Rush. Exit question: Will the IRS be lodging any formal objections with the church about Burris using its stage for politics?

Let’s get it over with, so we can move on. All of Congress must be black. Anything less is racism. Vestiges of racism. They will not die. They cannot die. There is so much more racism to benefit from.
After Congress, all Governors must be black. Oh, and all Supereme Court Justices, Federal and State.
Racism must stop.

Yep. According to Mallard Fillmore.

Watching all of this from the front row here in Illinois…by the way, I don’t think Mr. Burris really knows what the people of Illinois want…it sure ain’t him…

Like they did with Trinity… oh wait.
We mocked Clinton relentlessly when she donned a faux Southern accent in a church, but nothing happened to that church, or the one Obama spoke in. Apparently Dems get a pass there, as anywhere else.

Where does this taint standard begin and end? If being “tainted” is the standard, why don’t they kick Rangel off the House, Ways and Means Committee while they’re at it? Or demand his resignation from Congress? Will Richardson be asked to resign as Governor of Arizona?
Heck, how did Obama manage to get the Dem nomination, what with the taint of Rezco and Rev. Wright?

This is nothing short of awesome. Harry Reid can stand in that doorway – or have his proxy do it – and be just like George Wallace. Isn’t that going to win him a lot of political points!

Nice try! But, no … Uncle Tom!
The racism must stop!
OhEssYouCowboys on January 5, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Sunday, on meet the press, dusty Harry Reid also said, as an ‘old trial lawyer’ everything can be negotiated.
What’s to negotiate? The size of the campaign contributions and who will receive them? Is Reid saying that with the properly sized and placed contribution all of Burris’s problems can be made to go away?
Or was Reid saying where Burris will sit (front or back of the bus) and if he will be allowed to speak could be negotiated if only Burris will sign a loyalty oath to always support Reid, Obama, and the democrat party positions?
So what is there to negotiate?
Skandia Recluse on January 5, 2009 at 3:18 PM
OT: Obama is purposely tanking the markets, he needs to keep his mouth shut. He just caused this drop.

Geez, watching the MSM twist itself into knots protecting The Messiah is just amazing. I can not even believe, yes I know, I know, but even this level of corrupt, inept, God worship is more than I thought possible. Even James Carvile is getting a tad worried about all the scandles that will eventualy lead to The One’s downfall. We have four scary years ahead, but only two till we can regain the Congress and with blithering idiots like Franken and C.Kennedy it sould be doable in 2010. Even with the crappy, racialy worried Republican leadership, or lack there of…
Mark Garnett on January 5, 2009 at 3:22 PM
All of the above, as long as Reid can find some kind of cover that he thinks will justify his actions to the media.

The Senate and Secretary of State have no authority to do that whatsoever. Much as I think Burris is a tool, this just amounts to flagrant disregard for the rule of law. On an unrelated note, because of what Reid and his ilk have done to Repubs in the past, I don’t pity him one bit for the race-baiting happening to him right now. Karma, Harry “Phony Soldiers” Reid. Karma.

Answer to exit question-
Only Republicans can be guilty of separation of Church & State violations.
cs89 on January 5, 2009 at 3:37 PM
No. The separation of church and state applies only to conservative issues.
The One will set race relations back by at least 30 years, which is not good for anyone.
It’s schadenfreudig to watch the spectacle of the circus which is Obama. Were it not such a shame for our country it w/b sweet.

Well if it ends up in a fist fight between Reid & Burris, I am betting on Burris in the first round.

Gee, I wonder if the MSM can manage to have any film crews on hand when all this goes down – they’ll probably be too busy following the Obama’s out looking for a puppy to get any shots of “Bull” Reid blocking the Senate doors against Burris.

stenwin77 on January 5, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Sooo… lets see… an UNINDICTED Govenor, Legaly makes an appointment he is enpowered to make… to an empty Senate Seat…
And the Demo’s in the Senate refuse to seat him? Are we any longer even pretending we follow the rule of LAW, and the Constitution?
Oh… wait… thats right, we quit pretending when the Supremes wused out and would not even hear the case about whether Obama’s dual citizenship denies him a Natural Born status…
The downfall of this country started when the Courts would no longer protect either the rule of Law, or the Highest Law of our land, the Constitution.

So in other words, he will be the same corrupt politician he’s always been. I bet he thinks Blago did nothing wrong. He sure has an easy way of professing he’s for sale.
No. You are part of the problem.

The Dems’ ethics rules for distribution of Senate seat appointments can seem confusing at first blush, but upon reflection are clear and may be summarized as:
Sale Unacceptable, if recorded (or low balled)(See IL)
Grant Unacceptable, if preceded by attempted sale (Ibid.)
Bequest Acceptable, (See NY)
Larceny Acceptable, (See MN)

This is an interesting conundrum that reminds me of the facts in Marbury v. Madison, even though that had nothing to do with Senators.
It seems that Burris is one of two Senators from Illinois, but he is not a Congressional Senator.

NEW CONSPIRACY THEORY
Obama has been quiet lately because he is recovering from bionic corneal implants that will eliminate the need for a teleprompter. A direct link to the Bilderberg Group is included.

brtex on January 5, 2009 at 5:21 PM
I can see the National Guard escorting Burris to his seat, while Reid is chained to the senate door…
“We only need their vote, announced Reid, we don’t need ‘their’ leadership”.
“If he shows up, I am going to throw him under the back of the bus” stated President Elect Obama.
“I stated that there are now a thousand cracks in the ceiling…and the blacks begin showing up looking for the crack” expressed Speaker Pelosi, “Don’t they know their place?”
“Burris hasn’t been indicted” was Hillary response, “I am not sure he is qualified”.
“I don’t mind if he is selected” said Dick Durbin, “As long as he shines my shoes and doesn’t look me directly in the eyes, them boys give me the willy’s”.

Schadenfreude on January 5, 2009 at 6:01 PM
Ah, the “world’s greatest deliberative body” is an an exclusive club.
Will Reid be forced to wheel in cots to assure 24-hour surveillance in preventing taint?
When in comes to fisticuffs, don’t forget that “Pinky” Reid was once a boxer. He has an in with the NV oddsmakers, too.
So, we’re going to trade Senator Present for Senator Absent?
This whole situation is surreal. Blago was willing to open the seat to an election, but Dingy Harry was afraid that it would go to a Republican. Harry, your ego knows no bounds. Instant karma has gotten you.
onlineanalyst on January 5, 2009 at 6:08 PM
As one Southern Illinois University graduate speaking of another, let me just say that Roland Burris is one kooky Saluki.
radjah shelduck on January 5, 2009 at 6:14 PM
Idiocy in Democratic leadership? I’m shocked…shocked. Reid may create a situation in which someone drops a stinky on the O.
Mason on January 5, 2009 at 7:45 PM
From the video, I love how feisty Mr. Burris is with the media. He sure knows how to put them in place, which is not what they are used to. They are sooooooo in the sack for the O, it’s not even attempted to be hidden. He, however, takes care of them, promptly, each time. “I am the juniour Sen. from Illinois” was great.
Only one thing, he, erroneously, calls them his “colleagues”.
Tomorrow s/b lots of fun. Reid already weaseled out and insinuated a compromise on the Sunday show.
Entelechy on January 5, 2009 at 8:00 PM
Hell, yeah, he would…and, while I’m no fan of Burris et al., I gotta admit a certain admiration for anyone who successfully beats Dingy Harry at his own game.
