Video: Richardson withdraws from Obama Cabinet; Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added
posted at 1:55 pm on January 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It didn’t take long for Barack Obama to have his first brush with scandal in his administration. In fact, he managed to do that before taking the oath of office. Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination as Commerce Secretary after a federal investigation into pay-for-play in New Mexico went public last month:
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, tapped in December by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position, citing a pending investigation into a company that has done business with his state.
“Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” he said Sunday in a report by NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.”
He said he plans to continue in his role as governor. “I appreciate the confidence President-elect Obama has shown in me, and value our friendship and working partnership. I told him that I am eager to serve in the future in any way he deems useful. And like all Americans, I pray for his success and the success of our beloved country.”
Thus far, the Obama transition looks pretty shaky. Rahm Emanuel may or may not have connections to the unfolding scandal in Illinois, and now Richardson won’t even bother with a confirmation hearing. The federal grand jury wants to know whether Richardson traded state government contracts for campaign contributions, and Richardson apparently doesn’t feel comfortable answering questions on the record about the allegations while the grand jury does its job. That Richardson would accept the nomination and then withdraw under these circumstances says something about how uncomfortable this scandal will get.
Richardson says he will remain Governor despite the investigation. We’ll see how long that statement will remain in effect. For now, however, one has to wonder what kind of vetting the Obama transition team has done with the marquee selections, and how badly they’ll bungle the rest.

I don’t think Democrats are losing a whole lot of sleep over this. Bill Richardson hasn’t had an original idea in his head, he’s relied on others for everything and is a pretty useless partisan hack. He got the ultimate concillation appointment and will leave in disgrace before being confirmed. I say, hell yeah! He’s on the right side of the party, put a progressive in there Obama.
DeathToMediaHacks on January 4, 2009 at 3:37 PM
You can’t be serious, and if you are you’re playing too nicely with The Left and That One. Obama is always surrounded by scandal: Rezko, Wright, Blago, Ayers, Michelle Obama, etc. yet he’s not tainted? PUH and LEEZE!
SouthernGent on January 4, 2009 at 3:39 PM
And I always thought that the mistake that Richardson made that would keep him out of serious contention was when, as UN ambassador, he idiotically advised Americans to invest in the Asian markets (Japanese, in particular) just before the second leg of the Asian crisis … while Richardson was then whisked out of the UN and into Energy – where he could do some real damage.
The myth of Bill Richardson’s “resume” (which is nothing but failure after failure in more departments than anyone else, evidently) was something that made me giggle every time I heard someone talk about it.

You’re really convinced of that, aren’t you? I don’t see Hillary dropping unless Barack asks her to – and I don’t see that. Obama and the Clinton’s don’t answer for their ethical lapses.
For a Democrat Richardson is a stand up guy. He was their best candidate for President and they ignored him completely. I’m not real shocked to see Richardson do the right thing.
Mr Purple on January 4, 2009 at 3:49 PM
This could easily be the most corrupt administration to be exposed before they are sworn in and can use the bully pulpit to suppress any information detrimental to their criminal activities. Richardson is just the tip of the iceberg for the intellectually dishonest stooges that are going to be exposed.

Yeah, I was being a little facetious there…but my general point still stands…it’s gotta be a nightmare trying to find who is (pick any two!) sane/competent/clean…that’s a pretty tiny pool and he has a lot of slots to fill (he’s already ahd to dip into the Republican pool a couple of times…I really do kind of feel sorry for the schmuck though, since it’s clear he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Ulcers anybody?

Instead of “Hope and Change”, we’ve got “Cha-Ching…Cha-Ching…” as the money flows into the pockets of Obama and the Democratic Party. We’re about to see corruption on a scale we haven’t seen since the Grant and Hayes Administrations!
Chicago style politics brought nation-wide!

Obama’s whole political life has been one scandal after another. Why does being elected to the presidency change one damn thing?
volsense on January 4, 2009 at 3:56 PM
Come on, AUINSC, putting “competent” in the list is really unfair to Democrats. You need to replace that requirement with “literate”, which is a tough enough hurdle for Democrats.
Get with the program folks. The left is in charge and everything is being graded on a curve, now. (And not a Normal Distribution, either!)

Let me understand this;
It is not O.K. to be a corrupt Commerce Secretary,
But it is O.K. to be a corrupt Governor?
And what is the reasoning here? Is that like; “Well, Blago’s staying on, so I can do it too.”

I don’t know where your friend in Las Cruces lives but I’ve been here for four years and we have at least 12 automated car washes that I can think of off the top of my head.
No Mexicans necessary for operating them.
Anyway, NM has very liberal policies regarding illegal immigrants. Many would probably find carwash attendent beneath them.

This brings up a moral dilemma: is there a point where the president is so weakened by scandals that we should start supporting him for the good of the nation?
I never thought I would ask that with P.BO, but I don’t think anyone is going to be able to impeach him (nor do I think Biden is any improvement).

That’s the New Mexico way, right?
KingGold on January 4, 2009 at 4:14 PM
BREAKING NEWS…There is a “cloud” now over New Mexico. As reported by Reid “my lips” earlier to-day, there was “a clould over the whole state of Illinois”, the result of corruption as seen by the Holier than One Reid.
The breaking news headline is a democratic storm front has blanketed the whole state of New Mexico. On anotherwise clear dau in the area, this cloud emerged spontaneously with the announcement by the State Governor, yes Governor, Richardson withdrawing for confirmation of the Commerce position with the One. But the fluffy white stuff in the sky must not be as dark a pay-to-play cloud as over Illinois, as least for now, as no impeachment has commenced like in Illnois. On the otherhand the seer Reider has not got around to crystalizing his prognois for atmospheric stuff over New Mexico.
Exit question…Just what kind of executive orders has Richardson made over the last month? They would be “tainted”, wouldn’t they Harry my boy?

kcewa on January 4, 2009 at 4:26 PM
Bush, as much as I have disagreed with many of his positions, is no bad apple. He’s too far to the left, but a good man.
And it’s not a question of picking out individuals. Of course there are bad apples and morons in all groups. We are talking about the overall makeup of the group. In the aggregate, the left are retards who formulate positions based on their emotions – as our Precedent-Elect detailed very explicitly in his explanation of the requirements for a good SCOTUS justice, to give just one clear example.

It’s not fair that Bill Richardson should withdraw his name because he is under suspician for being some kind of crook. Geeze people he is a politician and a Democrat at that. He is expected to be a crook. It may even be a requirement who knows. How do you think all the democrat politicians get to be millionaires? They start out poor as church mice…then overnight instant millionaire. As children they were walking to school in the snow with no shoes..uphill both ways. Is this the thanks they get for their trouble? This is so unfair.

Rezko’s involvement in Obama’s getting a free house.
His transition team’s involvment in the Blago scandal.
Serious questions about Hillary Clinton’s ability to ethically do her job considering all that foreign money Bill Clinton got.
Richardson’s corruption is at least the fourth brush with scandal before this filthy politician has even arrived in DC (though his “ho” and bratty kids are there now).
I’ve posted this before but Obama is going to bring the nation the most corrupt administration in American history. The way this stuff is already oozing out is only a taste of what to come when the criminals he appoints at all levels of the government actually get into positions of responsibility and start having the ability to siphon off money for Obama and his many debt-holders.

No, unfair is the way the media convicted Sarah Palin for abusing her office without on bit of proof or waiting for an independent report. What Richardson’s resignation tells me is that there is something damning about to leak and he wouldn’t be able to concurrently serve in the filthy bastard’s cabinet and at Danbury Federal Correction center.
Even if not convicted, Blago has pretty much exposed this administration’s corruption and any such distraction by Richardson would be untenable even from a press that thinks the filthy bastard came out of the Chicago political mafia without any taint.

Well, I had hoped that we would be rid of this carpetbagging slime as Governor. But our loss might possibly be a net gain for National Commerce…. They might accidentally get someone with some basic level of competence in there now.
And it is still possible that the Grand Jury will indict him on the corruption charges he is being investigated for (and quite obviously is guilty of them {and more which are not being investigated})…… I do rather enjoy imagining him in an orange jumpsuit.

Darth, you hate her for one reason, and that is that she wasn’t as religious as you are. However, for a free thinker like you to claim “The more Ayn Rand squirms, the better.” is sheer insanity, as it contradicts the 99% of everything you stated that you stand for. Think about this, deeply. Otherwise I’m going to assume that, aside from your religious beliefs, contrary to her, you don’t know her well.

More likely IMO is a scenario where Hillary hangs out as SECSTATE until Obama is forced to resign in disgrace and Biden becomes President. Depending on timing, Biden either doesn’t run in 2012 or resigns shortly afterward because of health issues. Hillary gets the top job.
