NFL Open Thread: Wildcard Playoffs

posted at 12:57 pm on January 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

It’s a good thing I didn’t put up a thread on the playoffs yesterday.  I would have picked against both the Chargers and the Cardinals.  The Bolts had built momentum for the playoffs, but I thought Peyton Manning would have beaten them in post-season mode.  The Cardinals limped into the playoffs and Atlanta finished strong, but apparently Arizona just saved it up for the playoffs.

We have two more games today, and that should take my mind off the fact that Granddaughter #2 has remained obstinate about making her debut.  We’re expecting her tomorrow at the latest, as the doctor says he’ll induce sometime Monday if nothing happens until then.  Meanwhile, our visiting family has left town disappointed, and we’re recovering from a fun but exhausting week with company.  With the temperature at 0 today, it looks like a good day to curl up in front of the TV for some playoff fun.

Here are my completely unreliable picks today, in which I predict no surprises:

  • Baltimore at Miami — The Dolphins have had a Cinderella season, rebounding from a 1-15 debacle in 2007 to win the division this year.  Baltimore got a wildcard bid.  I’d love to see Baltimore get bounced from the playoffs and Miami extend its remarkable comeback … but it’s not going to happen.  Ravens over the Fins, 27-10.
  • Philadelphia at Minnesota — Both teams have been inconsistent this year.  Which Vikings and Eagles will show up today?  I’m loathe to pick the Vikes after so many disappointments, but they’ve been playing better of late and they’re playing in the Metrodome.  Vikings 24-21 in OT.

What are your picks today?

Update: That’s the second time in a month I’ve been within a point of a final score — and in this case, only a blocked PAT attempt kept me from getting it perfect in the Baltimore-Miami game.

I predict the Dolphins and Vikings will win today.

SoulGlo on January 4, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Yesterday’s games were exciting. Both the teams I wanted to win did. Today, I’d guess Eagles and Ravens, but I’d rather the Vikes pulled it out. It really depends on Jackson’s poise.

Spirit of 1776 on January 4, 2009 at 1:00 PM

What are your picks today?

J! E! T…Oh, nevermind…

JetBoy on January 4, 2009 at 1:03 PM

I predict that the Giants will advance to the next round. :-)

I’m going to go against Ed on both games. Dolphins are just more psyched and win a low scoring game, 13 – 10.

The Eagles have been falling all over themselves, but they’ll get their act together long enough to win 24 – 17 and advance to face my Giants.

Jazz Shaw on January 4, 2009 at 1:05 PM

If either team is not Navy or Army, the game is meaningless.

SeniorD on January 4, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Ed,
First off, best wishes for you and your family in the New Year.

I am a Bears fan and i’d love to see the Vikings lose but i heard on CBS that Westbrook is going/likely to miss the game for Philly – which means that in addition to Mcnabb, the Eagles D have to score some TDs as well.

I dont think the Ravens can be stopped in their game against Miami. but that’s what i thought about the Colts and the Falcons too.

Upset pick:Fins

nagee76 on January 4, 2009 at 1:08 PM

I hope the Vikings beat the Eagles.

I fear the Eagles more than the Vikings. The Eagles are a bunch of losers, but they are great spoilers.

Go Big Blue, enjoy the bye.

Mr. Joe on January 4, 2009 at 1:10 PM

Ravens over Fish: 21-17

Eagles over Vikes: 27-21

JetBoy on January 4, 2009 at 1:11 PM

Then again, if the Eagles do advance, I like the reception they will get in the Meadowlands.

Mr. Joe on January 4, 2009 at 1:11 PM

Ravens over Fins, 17-6

Vikings over Eagles, 28-24

Heartbreak yesterday. Colts were sleep-walking and I really hoped the Falcons could keep it going. I hope today is better.

Y-not on January 4, 2009 at 1:15 PM

You shouldn’t care about football games unless the Steelers are playing; all other teams are simply filler for the NFL.

Bishop on January 4, 2009 at 1:16 PM

My Steelers don’t play until next week. So only one thing matters to me:

Minnesota must lose.

A state full of idiots that vote for Al Franken doesn’t deserve a winning football team.

Vegi on January 4, 2009 at 1:17 PM

yep this is all an appetizer for next week’s Steelers’ game.

Jamson64 on January 4, 2009 at 1:18 PM

Richardson just pulled out as Commerce Secretary, some scandal investigation (not him lying again about his imaginary baseball career).

Mr. Joe on January 4, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Glad to see the Falcons get dumped yesterday, I still have nightmares from their stupid “Dirty Bird” dance.

The Colts are gone too which means we won’t have to deal with Peyton’s self-obsessiveness.

Time for a little new blood in the Super Bowl against the Steelers; Cards or Vikes against the Steel.

Bishop on January 4, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Thank youuuuu Chargers!!! Nothing better than seeing “Mr. MVP” choke again.

Since when have we had a winning football team? Vikes are 0-4 in the big show, you don’t really have much to worry about on that matter.

Go Steelers.

Seriously, I hate the Eagles but I am rooting for them today, for the same reason. I hope all Minnesota teams lose from now on.

rockmom on January 4, 2009 at 1:21 PM

I predict the Eagles/Vicking tie, and then 10 days of fraudulent recounts and law suits. Game is in Minnesota after all. OOffaahh.

I was disappointed to hear Dan Marino pick Baltimore over the Dolphins today. I look forward to him eating crow when the game is over. Dolphins all the way!!!

PA keeps electing Murtha, yet I fervently hope and pray that the Steelers win it all. New Jersey is a cesspool of corruption and seedy politics but I loves me them Devils.

Crazy, I know, being a fan of a team and separating them from politics when they are so obviously intertwined like a nest of snakes. I must be insane.

Bishop on January 4, 2009 at 1:32 PM

New Jersey is a cesspool of corruption and seedy politics…

Yes indeedy, but I love the Devils and especially the Giants. I do not care for the Eagles (I consider the Eagles the equivalent of a rabid possum), but it has nothing to do with Murtha. I absolutely despise Dallas, and again Texas politics has nothing to do with it (even Dallas fans are not that bad), I just hate the idea of America’s Team. They deserve T.O. and Romo for that hubris alone.

Mr. Joe on January 4, 2009 at 1:36 PM

redrock on January 4, 2009 at 1:23 PM

No no, this is Minnesota. If the Vikings lose, the local fans will show their ire by raising an eyebrow, or even…GASP!…saying “Oh man, that game was no good” in a mildly displeased tone.

We might even decide to eat lefse without sugar, just to prove that we can take anything.

Bishop on January 4, 2009 at 1:37 PM

redrock.

Nice one.

Of course the Vikings will then find a safety or a field goal in a vat of Lutefisk in some referees trunk that everyone missed and that will decide the game.

Mr. Joe on January 4, 2009 at 1:38 PM

I kind of thought Marino picked against the Dolphins this morning so as not to get his hopes up.

I hate the Ravens and I am fond of Chad Pennington, so I hope that the Dolphins can with this thing.

I think it is a pity that one team must win in the Eagles/Vikings game. Even though, unlike McNabb, I am fully aware of the NFL rules, I still have my hopes on a 0-0 tie.

myrenovations on January 4, 2009 at 1:39 PM

I’m predicting the Vikings to win 479 to 20. It will look like they lost 17 to 20 but in the recount it will be discovered that the refs forgot to count nearly 70 touch downs. Some of the records of these touchdowns will be found in the cars in the parking lot, under the seats of the patrons, and five will be discovered in cups of beer served during the game. The final result will be announced sometime in mid June.

Welcome to Sanity, a place where sports fans are allowed to root for their favorites even if their representative states elect morons and fools.

I can’t stand the Eagles, and I agree that the Cowboys “America’s Team” crap gets under my skin, even though I plan on moving to Texas someday.

Hell, I will even profess a closet admiration for the shatpile city (in a shatpile state) of Detroit’s hockey franchise, somehow they manage to produce a great team year after year.

I’m not exactly hoping for it, but I think it’ll be the Steelers and Ravens in the AFC championship game. I’m not even going to guess at what might happen in the NFC.

forest on January 4, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Don’t hate on the Steelers because of Murtha. The Steelers are in Pittsburgh, Murtha’s district is on the other side of the state. The people of Pittsburgh have no say in his election.

Vegi on January 4, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Vegi on January 4, 2009 at 1:17 PM

My family is from Minnesota, I lived in the state for ten years and went to college there, and I am a lifelong Vikings fan who despises the Eagles. But I have to agree with this statement.

Missy on January 4, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Yes but the Steelers owner, Dan Rooney, is a sports worrld impersonation of Mr. Jane Fonda. He gave The One an early endorsement and later a rally at Mellon Arena where He was presented with a Steeler jersey with Obama as the name and 08 as the number. The locals loved it.

The Steelers should be fined for having an owner who is too cute by half and too stupid politically to be involved.

The Ravens are brutal and have idiot fans.

IlikedAUH2O on January 4, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Interesting. I did not know that Rooney was a leftist loon. Well then, I hope he loses his current battle to retain ownership of the team.

Vegi on January 4, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Missy — a lot of the country is messed up right now. If you have not read OBAMANATION don’t.

The policy indications in His biography are much worse than the people He picked for his cabinet would suggest. His life is well, maybe you should read it for $4…..

IlikedAUH2O on January 4, 2009 at 3:01 PM

Mr. Rooney is not just a Dem in the current craze, which I might forgive, but is a long term Democrat. In a major city. But a great man in some respects.

IlikedAUH2O on January 4, 2009 at 3:04 PM

Definitely agree. He has picked a few nominal “moderates” for cover.

From 1-15 to 11-5 to eliminated in humiliating fashion! See ya Dolphins!

Gatordoug on January 4, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Vikes get blown out, 42-3.

Ed hasn’t lived here long enough to appreciate the magic that occurs when the Vikings — however well they’ve played all year — make the post-season.

My prediction is based on emotion, not reason.

forest on January 4, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Gatordoug on January 4, 2009 at 3:54 PM

Can’t watch anymore:(

I really would have liked Miami to win, I have been a fan for over 30 years and this game is so disappointing. My husband will claim I jinxed em because on their first possession I called the field goal instead of the TD. That’s okay, he blames me for everything and after 28 years I’m used to it.

Oh well, we had a good year. It was an exciting surprise after the miserable season last year so, I am not complaining, they got to the play offs after being the worst team in the league. They can build on this and we can look forward to next year.

Now that my team is out, I don’t who I will root for. I just get tired of seeing the same old teams. Since I’m from Mo, maybe I will get behind the Cards. Or since my husband is from SoCal, I will cheer on the Chargers. I just don’t want to see a repeat by the Giants.

Jvette on January 4, 2009 at 3:54 PM

Best case scenario in the NFC (and yes, I’m a Cards fan):

Philly beats the Vikings, faces the Giants in the divisional round.

Cardinals face Carolina in the divisional round in a warm weather game at Carolina. This is optimal, because they suck in the cold, but are competitive in warm weather. Cards win to go to NFC Championship Game.

Philly beats the Giants to go to the NFC Championship Game. This is optimal for the Cardinals because this is the only way said game will be in Arizona. Once again, a warm weather game, in a dome, with a home crowd (for once).

Cards beat Philly to go to the Super Bowl, bringing about the first sign of the apocalypse.

Mibrilane on January 4, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Mibrilane on January 4, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Well, I think Philly beats Minnesota today and could beat the Giants too. The cards at Cartolina is the toughest part of the scenario.

Gatordoug on January 4, 2009 at 4:04 PM

True, but they lost there during the season on a blown call where the receiver clearly stepped out of bounds and the officials, on review, claimed that his heel didn’t touch the ground out of bounds (his toe was in bounds) and they let the TD at the end of that stand. This despite a divot being kicked up by the runner which clearly had white paint on it.

That was the difference in that game. The Cards played Carolina well at Carolina, and with a resurgent running game (and thus a balanced offense) there’s no reason to say they won’t do so again. It would likely be a squeaker, but it’s possible.

Like I said, that’s the best case scenario for the Cardinals to win the NFC Championship. It isn’t likely, but it’s possible. :D

Don’t feel bad. The Ravens D was great today (no big surprise) and with only two receivers and backs who don’t catch well, Chad was really up against it.

I hope Pittsburgh turns Rivers into pate next week, but for the Super Bowl I’d enjoy seeing the Ravens against the Panthers.

Hoping for a humiliating defeat of the Eagles this afternoon.

Y-not on January 4, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Eagles fans do not eat scrapple. That is Lancaster County. Eagles fans eat Tastykakes and will sell their own mothers into slavery for a bite of one.

Standard win for the birds, on to New York. Gmen aren’t much of a threat without Plaxico so the big question next week will be who we play in the NFC Championship.

I also liked how the “experts” said NY would be fine without him, they obviously didn’t know how good Plax was, he was the best WR in the league, they didn’t realize how much of a safety blanket he was when Eli gets blitzed, and how much Plax being on the field changes the secondary coverage which changes pass and run defense.

LevStrauss on January 4, 2009 at 7:52 PM

Anyone who calls the College Bowls meaningless should look at this weekend in the NFL.

There is no way the Cardinals or the Falcons belong in the playoffs and if the Cards make it to the Super Bowl, the entire system would have to be fixed.

The Vikings are terrible and the Dolphins worse.

The Colts, the Eagles and the Ravens are all decent, but certainly nothing special.

And effective playoff system would have eliminated all of these teams, truly.

Thank god Minnesota lost. Now we don’t have to see Franken at half time next week telling us what his plans are for Minnesota in the Senate.

patrick neid on January 5, 2009 at 2:54 AM

I have just read Bob Kravitz’s column at the Indianapolis Star calling for Dungy to resign as head coach of the Colts (as he has hinted at for several years) citing years of good regular seasons but futility in the playoffs (except the Super Bowl year in 2006). There are two ways to view a column of this type: first is to view the writer as a bitter representative of the Colts’ fan base who feel the need to strike out somewhere, anywhere and second is to analyze the message to see if it has any validity. Here is my take. The more vehement one wants to shoot the messenger the more on the mark his column is. Why is Sarah Palin hated so much by the MSM and the nutroots and Huffington Post? And to the argument itself. The Colts have lost to same team two years in a row, a team perceived to be inferior to the Colts and hamstrung by injuries: in 2007 to a second-string SD QB (Volek) and in 2008 a second-string SD running back (Sproles). Part of being a successful coach is taking advantage of and exploiting an opponent’s weakness-to bury an opponent that is in a vulnerable position. Dungy failed big time to do this two years in a row and for this alone he should go. Football is a rough-and-tumble game and that is made a mockery of when the coach doesn’t develop game plans and schemes that complement the nature of the game and doesn’t seek the destruction of the opponent.

technopeasant on January 5, 2009 at 7:19 AM

As much as I’ve always hated the Eagles, I was pulling for them yesterday. I was just imagining how many of the morons in the bleachers voted for Franken. Those people are losers and now so is their team. When you elect a former wrestler as governor and a mentally disabled former comedian as a Senator, you know that you have serious issues with the water supply in your state. I’m hoping that Franken successfully annexes Minnesota into Canada.

orlandocajun on January 5, 2009 at 7:23 AM

One of the interesting nuggets offered by many commentators is that momentum in the NFL doesn’t exist. May I offer another in this age of Obama: the chance that the Chargers and the Cardinals will face each other in the Super Bowl went up appreciably with the election of The One. It’s just a gut feeling. No way an 8-8 team should face a 9-7 in the SB, but there was no way that Obama should have been elected either.

technopeasant on January 5, 2009 at 7:24 AM

Tavares Jackson is not one of the best 32 QB’s in the NFL. He is barely a backup.

He wasn’t even good enough to play Div I football…but that didn’t stop our head coach from moving UP in the draft to take him! And then after he showed last year that he wasn’t NFL material, Chilie made him the starter this year…until he benched him because he sucked…but then he made him the starter again…and then he sucked again… But hey…we made the playoffs! We’re suppose to be happy about that up here! One and done…
