Video: The obligatory “Kathy Griffin shocks America with 50-year-old line” clip

posted at 2:45 pm on January 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

I wasn’t going to post on it but Drudge, in his supreme wisdom/desperation, has deemed it officially Newsworthy. The three kids in America who were up late on New Year’s Eve and inexplicably tuned to Anderson Cooper were doubtless scandalized, but like Ace, I’m offended only by the laziness of it. I did a quickie Google search to see how ancient this ancient comeback is and gave up when I found it cited in the chapter on stock lines in “The Complete Guide to Hack Stand-up Comedy,” a compendium that dates to the mid-nineties featuring material that’s been around “since the age of vaudeville.” Proof positive that Dick Clark wasn’t the oldest thing on TV Wednesday night. (Dick Clark age jokes fall under Chapter 6f of the Guide, I believe.)

I’m surprised the South Park guys haven’t added it to Jimmy Vulmer’s comic repertoire. Exit question: Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? Wow, what a great audience! Content warning.

Classy as usual.

Do people actually pay money to listen to that cat’s-death-wail of a voice?

Your gut instinct was right, AP.

Somewhat ironic as she was on an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry heckled her act which was about him.

Jim-Rose on January 2, 2009 at 2:51 PM

The really sad part is; it actually took her a moment to come up with that.

landshark on January 2, 2009 at 2:52 PM

If you watched these two on New Year’s Eve, you got what you deserved.

Griffin is constantly making outrageous statements in live TV situations in her desperate, yet futile atttempt to get up on to the C list.

These 2 are the perfect example why some people shouldn’t breed.

Is it me, or does Kathy Griffin look more masculine than Anderson Cooper? She looks like an old dried out saddle bag and Cooper looks like he’s been soaking in a tub of Oil of Olay.

Yuck to both.

I don’t understand how CNN expected a different outcome from Kathy Griffin.

She pulls this type of stunt at every chance she gets.

Of course she was crude and vulgar, she does not know anything else. This is who she is and what she represents as a comic.

I’ve always liked that about her. She’s one of the few Hollywood types who has done multiple tours. It seems like a lot of them do one tour (or don’t do one at all: Griffin called out Ellen when she was on her show for not going.) as sort of an obligatory ‘see I’m a nice celebrity’ PR thing and then never go again.

As far as her line from CNN: zzzzzzzzz…

benny shakar on January 2, 2009 at 4:11 PM

I think Kathy Griffin is hilarious and, despite some of the silly things that sometimes come out of her mouth, I don’t get the sense she’s a flaming lefty. Among other things, she seems to have a lot of respect for the troops and a healthy contempt for Muslims who insist on dwelling in the seventh century. Cut her some slack.

Infidoll on January 2, 2009 at 4:13 PM

The worst part for me? The delivery. Granted, it is old, and rather lame… but at least if she’d fired it back quickly, it wouldn’t have been so bad. The fact that she first told the person to “get a job”, then comes with the “I don’t come to your job….” line… Which is it, Kathy? Do they have a job or not?

Kathy Griffin is one of those angry “comics” who, after too many instances of showing her true bitter colors, will finally stay that way, much like Rosie O’Donnell and Al Franken have.

Waiting for Ellen Degenerate to go over the edge as well.

With the possible exception of Lampanelli, I do not think there is one funny female comedienne in existence. Women just don’t do comedy well. And the ones that try it, are either ugly or lesbian, or both. And still not funny. Comedy is just not a female trait.

keep the change on January 2, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Unfortunate to see AC team up with her. I beg to differ with some of the folks in the blog who have commented on AC; I believe he is an amazing journalist and I sure hope people do not let his personal preferences come in the way of his superb professionalism.

Along that topic, I know how “traditional” conservatives believe making fun of global warming will make it go away, but “Planet in Peril” series is an eye-opener. Some people ignorantly believe that a snowfall in Vegas is indicative of global cooling, while turning a blind eye to the phenomenal lowering of polar ice in this decade. It is indeed unfortunate when people cannot talk rationally in terms of concrete scientific evidence.

Governor Palin was indeed a victim of chauvinism. The lovely and gracious Ms. Griffin is a victim of her own nastiness.

I was referring to your overarching statements covering *all* female comics, not Kathy Griffin per se. I do think there are some fine female comic actors, like Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld).

peter_griffin,

Using BBC as a valid source for anything is hilarious. They have a leftist agenda, just as the US media does. Here’s the money quote from the article: “Global warming and the increasing acidity of seawater are to blame, they write in Science journal.”

Problem is that the globe has been cooling for the past 10 years and the media refuse to report the truth. All part of a master plan to subject us to oppression and make us subjects of the socialist utopia. Wake the hell up.

Jarhead68 on January 2, 2009 at 10:33 PM

All part of a master plan to subject us to oppression and make us subjects of the socialist utopia. Wake the hell up.

Jarhead68 on January 2, 2009 at 10:33 PM

Jarhead: I find this a weird mentality, whose only equivalent goes something like this: I find my house on fire, but I lay back and relax, hitting snooze, since I know for a fact that I did not start the fire. Please point me to a peer-reviewed journal paper which proves conclusively that there is no fire. If there is one, then we should try our best to douse it, and I really believe any sensible person should do so.

Here’s my beef with so called “pure” conservatives: they confuse the science of global warming with the policy aspect, so they end up shooting the messengers (the scientists). Unfortunate.

Cheers,
The Family Guy.

peter_griffin on January 2, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I’m always amazed at how nasty and mysogynistic the commentary at Huffpo and DK becomes when a female, even a lefty one, does or says something the so-called progressives find offensive. You might not think Griffin is funny, and you might even find her offensive, but that’s no reason to call her names.

Try to show a little class, people.

Infidoll on January 2, 2009 at 11:07 PM

And you, sir, said Sarah Palin was a victim of chauvinism? Just curious …

No. never said any such thing. In fact, I was never a fan of SP. But observations on gender can and do exist outside of the realm of chauvinism.

keep the change on January 3, 2009 at 1:22 AM

Women love to laugh. All the dating profiles they write say that. “I love to have a guy make me laugh”. You never read, however, “I love to tell jokes and make others laugh.” Comedy is a male trait. This explains why the women who get to represent their gender in the biz tend to be on the masculine, or lesbian side, side; Rosanne Arnold, Rosie O’Donnell, Ellen Degeneres, Margaret Cho, etc.. Unfortunately, none of them are actually funny. In fact, I have never dated a woman, or even known of any woman, who told a joke, did an impersonation of anyone, or did any kind of improv at any time. Women just don’t do comedy. I guess they view being funny they same way they do farting – they don’t think it’s ladylike.
