Online bookies: Palin the odds-on favorite for 2012 nomination

posted at 4:45 pm on January 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Ever so slightly over Mitt and Huck.

Despite a slew of negative press this fall about Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) running mate, online gaming site Superbook.com puts Palin’s odds at 3.5-1, the best among Republican hopefuls.

Other top GOP contenders include former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whose odds are set at 4-1, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, at 5-1…

Another online site, BetUs Sportsbook, made Palin and Romney 4-1 co-favorites.

We’ve been over this. Barring a catastrophic first term, The One will be heavily favored for reelection, leading young’uns like Jindal and Palin to bow out and bide their time until 2016. (Even Palinistas as devout as Coulter agree that she should wait, as do you guys.) Mitt might run since he’d be 69 and facing a crowded, charismatic field in 2016, but unless he stands a real chance to win, I figure he’ll pass too in the interest of avoiding further expense and aggravation. Result: A Huckabee-Pawlenty snoozefest, leading grassroots conservatives to tear at their hair in anguish and boredom until some dark horse like Mark Sanford jumps in to make things moderately more interesting. Exit question one: Can you feel the excitement? Exit question two: Might Mitt run, conceivably, out of some sense of party loyalty even if he thought he was likely to lose? If there’s a leadership vacuum at the top of the GOP and the frontrunners are all weak and southern, would he jump in to rebrand the party with a midwestern/northeastern face and a reputation for financial expertise? Dean Barnett always swore to me that Mitt was motivated by a true sense of civic duty more so than any personal ambition. We’ll see.

Barring a catastrophic first term, The One will be heavily favored for reelection

And why is it so hard to believe that his first term won’t be catastrophic? Unless you think his trillion dollar stimulus package(aka New Deal Part II) will turn this economy around.

I think the more accurate question is if/when his catastrophic first term is coming to a close, will the drive-bys have the stones to portray it as such?

Doughboy on January 2, 2009 at 5:01 PM

I agree with everything Allah says here, but:

What if Obama has a bad first term and the mid terms are good for the GOP? If things are good for Jindal to throw his name in I thnik he runs away with it, especially in the primaries.

Hey Allah, we will be in a high inflation period just like the 70s under Carter. There will be one way BO can win a second term. People in 3 years will miss the Bush presidency with the inflation under control and when our unempolyment level was at 6%. Under BO unemployment will shy rocket up to 12% or even higher.

Republican can win back the white house in 2012 if we have a Bobby or a Sarah, or a Mark as our nominee.

The Purple Lipped One is the most G_dless man to enter the Whitehouse, and he certainly hates the U.S., he and his James Brown looking wife will absolutely have America hanging its head in shame.

Palin/Jindal 2012!!!

She should run in 2012. Have you heard of Obama’s economic “stimulus” package? Green jobs etc.
This is going to be a huge failure. Not to mention Hillary as Secretary of State. Oy Vey!
Also, his obsession with fitness and showing of his moobs is creepy. He is not going to dedicate himself to the office.

As you can tell I am not part of the Hope wagon.
Republicans will win 2010, Palin will run 2012 and win by a huge margin.

2012 is not on the menu at this time. Way tooooo early, as we need to focus on the now through 2010. Bad enough we just suffered through a freakin (2) year presidential campaign, let’s not make it a (4) year deal this time around.

Keemo on January 2, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Keemo on January 2, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Geeze people give it a break.

0Bama isn’t in office yet and the campaign for 2012 started before the last vote in the last election was counted.

Can’t we look around for the next three years or so and see if we might find someone better than the current GOP ‘rock stars’? The entire world is probably going to be vastly different by the time we have to choose again, and we may need someone with an entirely different set of skills, competences and personality than we want now. By then we may need a Patton at the reins (or we may need a Ghandi).

Lets not burn our bridges before we come to them. (Metaphor mixed intentionally).

Barring a catastrophic first term, The One will be heavily favored for reelection, leading young’uns like Jindal and Palin to bow out and bide their time until 2016.

Why should we “bar” a catastrophic first term? Obama is only a four-year Senator, two of which were spent campaigning, and with a Democrat Congress he will probably lurch between the leftist Pelosicrats and the more centrist Hillarycrats, and could end up vacillating and dithering in Carteresque fashion. What does Obama really know about governing?

He will have plenty of opportunities to mess up, and Republicans need to get ready to take back the House in 2010, and the stage might be set for a Jindal or Palin candidacy in 2012. Both will be six-year Governors by then, and both could try to get their messages out by making policy speeches outside their states, and Palin should bone up on foreign policy.

Has Obama girded his loins yet? Remember, he will be tested by an international crisis, saith Joe Biden.

Bush barely won against a fat egotist (2000) and a monumental condescending bore (2004). Alas they were both male. I think Palin has a massive handicap being female *and* terrible at presentation.

Much as I like her, she needs a lot of work.

Barring a catastrophic first term, The One will be heavily favored for reelection

Okay one more comparison with JFK and the filthy bastard about to take office. Lee Harvey Oswald is the only reason that JFK has a positive legacy. He was in Dallas in November 1963 because he desperately needed to get Southern Democrats on his side. The Kennedy administration was almost completely and totally a failure even if you discount the war the man inflicted on the nation.

Now, I’m not saying that somebody should take out Obama but untested, inexperienced, empty suits are not the best leaders when it comes to serious times and serious problems. At least JFK was tempered by serving in a war and coming up in a family of politicians. Obama hates and distrusts the military, doesn’t understand the basics of statecraft, and has assembled a team whose only qualification is loyally supporting while he was race-baiting agitator in Southside Chicago.

Well, being a complete cynic for a moment, coaching seemed to work for Obama. Aside from his experience as a junior lawyer for 5 minutes, writing two shamefully self-indulgent autobiographies, and indulging in a little racial warfare the man has achieved nothing at all.

Against such a low standard, Palin could float if she were able to speak coherently and persuasively.

It’s gonna be a helluva long time before I’m Cuda’ed out. I found this post from Team Sarah. It’s words to a Sarah Palin song to the song “Gone Country”. Enjoy.

Going Sarah!

She’s a good Christian girl, came of age in Wasilla
Hunted moose with her Daddy, and rode the snowmachine
A feisty little filly, was the captain of her high school team
They won the state championship, fulfillin one of many dreams

Fell in love with her high school sweetheart Todd
Boy and Girl eloped to save her old man dough

She’s Sarah Palin, Alaska’s best
She’s Sarah Palin, tougher’n the rest
She’s Sarah Palin, facin another test
She’s Sarah Palin, here she comes

She was on the city council and also was the mayor too
Raisin four great children on salmon and caribou
She fought the old boys’ club, determined with grit and will
Won the governor’s job with the votes of Alaskans she loves

Cleaning up her state, and havin baby Trig
And pretty soon ole Mac made her his pick

She’s SaraCuda, looks great in boots
She’s SaraCuda, oh how she shoots
She’s SaraCuda, from sturdy roots
She’s Sarah Palin, here she comes

She wowed the folks at the convention, speakin up for Johnny McCain
Took Joe Biden in debate, and fired up the whole campaign
It seemed that ole Ronnie Reagan the gipper had been reborn
But the economy died, election lost, and wounded pride

Hibernatin Mommabear licking her wounds
But she’ll be back soon, I’ll write another tune

She’s Sarah Palin, just doin her part
She’s Sarah Palin, a servant’s heart
She’s Sarah Palin, at home in ole WalMart
She’s Sarah Palin, Whew! work of art

We’re Sarah’s People, doin our part
We’re Sarah’s People, with servants’ hearts
We’re Sarah’s People, make a fresh new start
We’re Sarah’s People, Ohhhh.here we come

She’s Sarah Palin

Everybody’s Sarah’s People,

something something /Palin ticket with her being VP material again. Its also going to depend on what the Dems cough up.

LOL! That just cracks me up. Reminds me why I love HA.

That was post of the week.

Get a governor or even someone from the HOR if they make a name for themselves in the next few years, right now I think Jindal’s looking the best though we may want to save him for 2016.

LevStrauss on January 2, 2009 at 7:15 PM

I agree with you that we may find the best candidates fo rnational tickets from the ranks of the HOR or the Governorships. But that wasn’t my point. My point was that we (or at least “I”) don’t know C Rice’s policy positions. I don’t automatically assume that she is 100 % in line with W even though she was his SOS. Similarly, I “hope” Palin doesn’t support every one of McCain’s policies even though she supported almost all of them during the campaign.

I might be wrong,but I think,Huckabee has found
his second calling, the gig on Fox,and Huckabee
has said he likes being on Fox!

Hey … weren’t you fighting seagulls for french fries in the parking lot at McDonalds?

joey24007 on January 2, 2009 at 7:46 PM

I think the seagulls won.

Red State State of Mind on January 2, 2009 at 8:06 PM

She needs to run in 2012, whether she wins the presidency or not (it’s a foregone conclusion to me that she’ll get the nomination). When she’s on the stump, she is masterful at tearing up The One, and it unsettles him. John McCain was an idiot for not utilizing her more this way.

Yes, Obama after one term will be a challenge to stop (not because he’ll have a great first term, but simply because he will raise lots of money), but the Barracuda unleashed (with no Grandpa McCain to hold her back) will be fierce.

Besides, who is going to be the change candidate in 2012?

Actually she is very liberal on quite a few veiws. As I can’t find the links I remember her speaking about marriage and why she was against it, due to her upbringing and the fact that her parents wanted her to excel in a career and not marriage. Honestly I think she may be a lesbian, but who cares none of my business? She also has no real opinion on abortion or illegals. It was an interesting interview. And as I like Rice for a great mind as she HAS worked her buns off, her judgement to me lacks and has much to be desired.
