Nine Muslims kicked off AirTran flight

AirTran may face a lawsuit after denying nine Muslims the chance to fly after an overhead remark from one forced the pilot to delay the flight and rescreen the passengers.  The airline apparently refused to rebook the passengers even after being cleared by the FBI, at least according to one of the nine:

Nine Muslim passengers were kicked off a flight from Washington, D.C., to Florida after other passengers reported hearing a suspicious remark about airplane security.

AirTran Airways spokesman Tad Hutcheson called the incident on the New Year’s Day flight from Reagan National Airport to Orlando, Fla., a misunderstanding, but defended the company’s response. He said the airline followed federal rules and did nothing wrong.

One of the Muslim passengers, Kashif Irfan, told The Washington Post the confusion began when his brother was talking about the safest place to sit on an airplane.

“My brother and his wife were discussing some aspect of airport security,” Irfan said. “The only thing my brother said was, ‘Wow, the jets are right next to my window.”‘

Irfan told the newspaper he thought he and the others were profiled because of their appearance. The men had beards and the women wore headscarves, traditional Muslim attire.

AirTran said that one of the nine made an “inappropriate comment,” which led to the rescreening.  At least in the AP report, their version of the remark has not been revealed.  The family’s version appears so innocuous that it seems unlikely that it alone would have caused a delay and rescreening.  “Discussing some aspects of airport security” sounds like much more was said than just the proximity of jets to a window.

The family eventually made it to their religious retreat in Florida on US Airways after getting a full refund from AirTran, but that won’t stop the lawsuit.  We can expect CAIR to land on this incident with a full complement of attorneys, just as they did here in Minneapolis in more egregious circumstances.  The tipster in this case better get an attorney as well, as CAIR will assuredly target whoever reported the remarks just as they did with the Flying Imams.

Update: Corrected AirTran name in the headline.

Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch has this to say about the incident:

By the way, I have a black beard and usually travel with a Qur’an and other Islamic books. Sometimes, although not always, I work with those books during the flight. However, I take pains to conceal any incendiary titles from other passengers, so that no one is alarmed by some guy with a beard on the flight reading The Qur’anic Concept of War. And if I am ever ejected from a flight because someone is alarmed, I will not hesitate to put up with the inconvenience uncomplainingly. Better someone is inconvenienced than that innocents are murdered. Isn’t it, Ibrahim? Isn’t it?

(The reference is to Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR).

Joe Smith, Kevin Johnson, and Sue Jackson look like average Americans and want to get on a plane but they are terrorists in disguise with fake names.

How are we to distinguish them from everyone else? Check everyone and their baggage. Also educate the employees on what to look for and listen.

The airline and FBI did a good job.

shick on January 2, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Could this have been some kind of set up designed to deliberately get these people put off the flight? I wouldn’t put it past some of the more militant Muslim groups to stage just such a thing. It sounds contrived to me.

BTW, apologists for Islam need to spend some time at Islam: Religion of Peace (and a big stack of dead bodies) and Jihad Watch.

The ROP site has a nice About page that will get you started (their emphasis):

Originally, we started this website in the naive hope that perhaps Muslims just didn’t realize the extent of the violence that is committed in the name of their religion…

But in our first several years of posting attacks we never once heard from a Muslim who wrote to condemn the violence and resolve themselves to combating it. Neither did we see any change on the part of Muslim-American groups or other Islamic organizations across the globe, even as the body count mounted to levels that far exceed the damage done on 9/11…

No Muslim should be harassed or harmed anywhere in the world because of his or her religion.

But, as the evidence from this site and verses from the Qur’an prove, Islam is clearly not a religion of peace. The ridiculous level of violence committed in the name of this religion is staggering, despite the many billions of dollars that are spent each year to prevent attacks.

Nor should Westerners continue to think that the solution to the violence is greater understanding and tolerance for Islam, as Muslim apologists often imply when offering rare commentary on high-profile terror attacks. It is the killers and their supporters who need lessons in tolerance and understanding, not their victims.

INC on January 2, 2009 at 3:54 PM

From Jihad Watch, here’s part of an interview with Robert Spencer about his book Stealth Jihad: (my emphasis in bold)

Is Islam itself the problem?

Obviously “the problem” is rooted within Islamic texts and teachings that mandate warfare against and the subjugation of unbelievers. Ibn Warraq’s observation that there are moderate Muslims, but no moderate Islam is absolutely true in light of the fact that there is no orthodox sect of Islam and no school of Islamic jurisprudence that does not teach the necessity to work toward the political dominance of Islamic law and the subjugation of unbelievers under that law. People have a great deal of trouble acknowledging this due to the fact that there are obviously many Muslims who are not working toward this goal in any way, and because American Muslim advocacy groups have so successfully tarred as “bigotry” any honest discussion of the contents of Islamic doctrine regarding unbelievers. But these unpleasant facts will not go away simply because they are unpleasant.

Is “moderate” Islam even possible?

Anything is possible. But “moderate” Islam as an Islamic theological and legal construct does not now exist, and would need to be invented. Can it be done? The record of history shows that it is never wise to say that something could never happen. But as it would involve the overturning or wholesale reevaluation of the fonts of Islamic authority that have existed since virtually the beginning of Islam, it is extremely unlikely.

White said the pilot, after being informed of the remarks, requested that two federal air marshals on board remove the individuals. TSA then alerted authorities, including the FBI, which conducted an investigation. Once authorities determined there was no threat, it was up to the airline whether to allow the family to reboard.

“If the pilot is uncomfortable with someone flying on their plane, that’s their decision,” White said.

I’d be uncomfortable also and if they were allowed back on the plane, I would rebook on another flight.

You are confusing prejudging with judging post. If I examined a peanut and found mold growing on it I could then distinguish that this was indeed a bad peanut because I had enough information about it. My judgment would therefore be a post judgment. A judgment without such information would be a prejudice.

For example: to say that Sarah Palin was illogical because I encountered one Alaskan who didn’t follow logic would be a prejudice.

I don’t think I would use the word fear to describe my thinking or feeling. I’m not in any physical danger at the moment.

Eyes wide open is a phrase that comes to mind when it comes to understanding and recognizing the reality of the situation–as stated above by Spencer:

there is no orthodox sect of Islam and no school of Islamic jurisprudence that does not teach the necessity to work toward the political dominance of Islamic law and the subjugation of unbelievers under that law

And the fact that Muslims protesting against Muslim violence have been few and far between both worldwide and in the USA. There was one Egyptian writer I saw the other day who did so, but they are few.

Totten is honest enough to admit he is not always sure that Muslims tell him the truth or what they think he want’s to hear. He want’s us to believe that the charade in Kosovo is what happens to Muslims when exposed to American ideas. He is far too naive in this respect.

BL@KBIRD on January 2, 2009 at 6:49 PM

In appropriate generalization. The majority of Muslims are peaceful. Because a few Muslims are not does not give you the right to label all Muslims as “unsafe”.

shick on January 2, 2009 at 2:09 PM

The majority of Pit Bulls are peaceful. Because a few Pit bulls are not does not give you the right to label all Pit Bulls as “unsafe”.

The majority of the time one plays Russian Roulette it is safe. Because a few times it is fatal does not give you the right to label all games of Russian Roulette as “unsafe”.

The majority of the time Blago made appointments it was without taking a bribe. Because a few times he took a bribe does not give you the right to label him as “untrustworthy”
.
So many analogies, so little time.

Dave Rywall

What race are you deluding to? You are one of those unfortunates who think with their hearts. The problem is that it upsets the natural order of things in your system . It starts with thinking and deciding with your heart without the bother of investigation into the facts. So thinking with your heart quickly leads to defecating from your mouth.

Sound familiar Dave?

As well they should have. I have no problem with the security issues, but AirTran not putting them on another flight and then not issuing them a refund was…well… typical of AirTran’s lousy service…

Airlines safe to fly on:

U.S. Airways
AirTran Airways
– Sterling

Don’t forget Southwest, we had a guy (this was PRE-9/11) who tried to break into the cockpit … our Passangers KILLED him … yes, I said they KILLED him! PRE-9/11!

Tony737 on January 2, 2009 at 6:59 PM

“The family’s version appears so innocuous that it seems unlikely that it alone would have caused a delay and rescreening. “

Do you travel a lot?

I (don’t look vaguely muslim) and my decidedly non-muslim looking wife have been treated as ’suspects’ for next to no reason at all in a variety of airports. Subjected to extra security checks etc. Protocols I think they are called.

Look at the quality of the staff and the security ‘measures’ and you will see some glaring problems. Check out a pilot’s forum some time…

Dave and I are urging all Zionist and Christian forces who are working against the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah to shut their mouths immediately.

Otherwise, Dave and I will hold them responsible for their words. Any attempt to speak out against the Islamic Holy forces of Allah is pointless. We are committed to putting all aircraft of the world under our jurisdiction.

You cannot speak out against the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah. Any group that speaks out against the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will be sued and then destroyed. The Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will overcome the Zionist and Christian infidels and their Hotair stooges.

Allah willing.

It’s not extreme Islam, it’s Islam.

when the religion’s foremost and central authorities teach that the religious law must dominate, and also teach supremacism, violence, the oppression of women and more, and justify these teachings by reference to the religion’s core texts, there is a conflict when those who hold to the religion move into countries full of unbelievers. That conflict will eventually come to a head one way or another, unless the host country capitulates without any kind of resistance.

You cannot say that about Christianity, no matter how many gangster you see wearing a crucifix.

INC on January 2, 2009 at 7:13 PM

See, these maroons come here and see everyone using each other and sometimes winning, and think to themselves “what a great scam!” Because where they come from there is no rule of law, let along courts, let alone suing for vengeance for your grievances so they just simply don’t understand what the procedure is.

Such as having to open your bank account so the defendent can do diligence. Ditto inquiries to the IRS wondering what sort of taxes you’ve been paying while you’ve been in the United States.

Such as having the defendant interview your boss and all your neighbors to see what kind of a sterling – or not to sterling – character you are.

And finally, the super-big bad last step that our new American brethren who are Muslims just never seem to wrap their minds around: the jury. That they’ll have to convince 12 randomly-selected *other* Americans (in other words, not-Muslims) to agree that they were ill-done and deserve a financial reward.

And what is the likelihood of that *ever* happening, especially when it involves polygamous wives, too-many children, and bearded men flying in the same sort of conveyance that other Muslims used to such evil ends less can ten years ago.

None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Ever. Never.

There are worse things than having an uncharged or a malfunctioning Rywall Logic Laser, friend. With my little ring I can take Dave Rywall apart molecule by molecule and then put him back together again. And maybe I put him back together right and maybe I don’t. But he’ll be alive and conscious for every second of it.

Setup!

OldEnglish on January 2, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Of course it’s a set up. Like Mummers at Christmas it’s the first performance of Muslim Grievance Theater of the new year. A time to test how soft the west has become in the recent drain of resources and morale since 9/11.

It may well be a taxing year.

BL@KBIRD on January 2, 2009 at 8:01 PM

You over generalize. All peanuts are not bad, but all should be examined carefully. Particularly the ones with obvious characteristics in common with many known bad ones.

DarkCurrent on January 2, 2009 at 5:03 PM

I over generalized to make a point but I’m not sure if you understood my /sarcasm tag.

I also think you missed something in my analogy. The peanuts did not represent all people with the rotten peanuts representing the muslims. I compared the characteristics of a group, muslims, with another another group, peanuts. There surely are other groups that can be added to complete this analogy. Among Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, dates, mangoes and avocados there are bad ones.

See my comment above at 7:13 PM.

A better analogy would be if a crop of peanuts were planted in soil that was highly contaminated with toxic metals. You would not expect to grow peanuts that were edible.

The surprise would be if any of the peanuts were found to be toxin-free.

INC on January 2, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Eyes wide open is a phrase that comes to mind when it comes to understanding and recognizing the reality of the situation–as stated above by Spencer:

And the fact that Muslims protesting against Muslim violence have been few and far between both worldwide and in the USA. There was one Egyptian writer I saw the other day who did so, but they are few.

INC on January 2, 2009 at 5:09 PM

I agree and visit Spencer’s website often. Understand this point first and foremost. I believe that all of the hearts of MAN are wicked and it doesn’t take much to set him off into wickedness. So I am not surprised that in predominantly Muslim countries they are harsh to infidel. I know of the horrors inflicted on my Christian brethren abroad.
