Video: The surreal, race-baiting Blagojevich press conference; Update: No seat for Burris, says Obama; Update: Blago’s General Counsel quits

A transmission from Bizarroland, where Blago’s only option to make sure Illinois has two Senators in January is to appoint someone himself rather than resign now and let the lieutenant governor make the appointment. I’m giving you four and a half minutes of lowlights, but if you can’t spare the time, skip ahead to 3:25 and watch Rep. Bobby Rush — a former Black Panther and the only person to defeat Barack Obama in an election — stoop to some of the most exquisite race-baiting you’ll ever see. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but the word lynch makes a cameo. Or rather, its first cameo; a second followed shortly thereafter.

Below that you’ll find Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn responding to Blago by tearing him to pieces.

Update: Another plot twist: The Illinois secretary of state says he won’t certify the appointment. Does he have to?

Update: I told you what it would take to give Reid racial cover on this, right down to the complimentary pat phrase that would be used to describe Burris. And now, right on cue, here it is:

“Roland Burris is a good man and a fine public servant, but the Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat,” Obama said in a statement. “I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it. I believe the best resolution would be for the Governor to resign his office and allow a lawful and appropriate process of succession to take place. While Governor Blagojevich is entitled to his day in court, the people of Illinois are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy.”

Durbin chimed in, saying the appointment “will lead nowhere.” On to the Supreme Court!

Update: In court, the smart money’s on Blago and Burris.

Update: Tough day for Blagojevich: His General Counsel’s resigned, presumably to help the feds build a case against him.

This story just broke on the Chicago Sun Times:

Blagojevich’s General Counsel resigns

The Blagojevich administration’s top lawyer, William J. Quinlan, resigned today — the same day that the governor announced he’s decided to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat.

“Today, I have decided to resign my position as General Counsel and return to private practice,” Quinlan wrote in a memo to his staff.

I heard the presser on the radio and it was KILLING me to not see the expressions that must have accompanied the idiocy! I know it’s been said over and over again, but I think we should all thank McCain for running such a crappy campaign- we would never be having this kind of fun if he’d been elected! Where does one go to find out what Senator’s Reid and Pelosi have to say about their party??

Culture of corruption, indeed!

How will Bobby Rush affect US/Afghanistan relations with his references requiring more Afghan-Americans be represented in the US Senate?

Is this Obama’s secret weapon to win the war he’s promising to wage like the Russians did in Afghanistan? Have some jerk like Blagojevich put Bobby Rush in front of the press with a microphone making illusions of promises ne’er to be kept. Surely, this jive from the NEW ugly American will improve US/MidEast relations.

HornetSting on December 30, 2008 at 6:02 PM

[phew]

i don’t really want to derail the thread, but so-called “reverse racism” is one of those stupid things conservatives make themselves look like clowns by invoking.

there’s no such thing as “reverse racism”. there’s just racism: whites can be racist against blacks, blacks can be racist againt whites, asians can be racisist against…everyone.

the affixing of “reverse” to the word racism only signifies a recognition that it’s different for blacks to be racist against whites. to be precise, it’s neither as pernicious nor as morally unjustified as white racism against blacks.

eh on December 30, 2008 at 6:13 PM

I saw that press conference live and Bobby Rush delivered what was the single most jaw-droppingly racist performance I’ve seen in years. His sole argument seemed to be that Burris’s appointment should be honored because Burris is black. There was absolutely no further nuance to his position.

eh on December 30, 2008 at 6:13 PM

That’s all very true, but the fact is that whites, asians, … don’t really care about what others think of them. It is only those groups that are so insecure that go spastic when anyone says anything even slightly unflattering about them. In intelligence discussions, whites never seem to care that asians score above them, while some groups go absolutely ballistic if they don’t score at the top.

And I would just say that the “reverse” is put in to pay heed to delusional white guilt, which still drives most of our bad policies.

progressoverpeace on December 30, 2008 at 6:24 PM

to be quick about it, the problem is peculiar to indentity politics, not any real racial differences. it’s best taken as a left versus righ thing, and not a black versus white thing. in favt, you’re more likely to get it from a white liberal than a black liberal.

the bad reflex conservatives have is that when a white liberal tries to defeat a substantive policy dialogue by calling them a racist, conservatives say, “no wait, i can prove that blacks are (low-achieving, prone to criminality, etc.). it’s like the bugs bunny cartoon where bugs get’s daffy to say “duck season”. and since the original claim of racism was just an indirection to begin with, such a response gives them a wider rhetorical space to portray you in whatever way they like.

now, there’s a catch 22: this is a leftwing kink and not a racial kink, but most black poeple tend to the left. but to make conservatism an attractive option for black people, conservatives have to stop walking into these lefty traps wherein a lefty calls a righty “racist” and he responds, “no i’m not, but so what if i was?”

Ya lost me there, Sparky. Are you referring to the use of the word “reverse” as a descriptor, or racist acts themselves? As written, it sounds like you feel white on black racism is worse than black on white. I assume you are opposed to affirmative action??

a capella on December 30, 2008 at 6:30 PM

yes. white on black racism is worse than the reverse just as a 10 on 1 dodgeball game with ten throwers and one dodger is worse than the reverse.

i had no problem with affirmative actionwhen it was being hotly debated. being in the era of the first black head of state in the entire west might prompt a readjustment there though.

Based on liberal racial thinking they should not have ANY blacks seated as senators.

Update: In court, the smart money’s on Blago and Burris.

Perhaps as far as initially taking the seat, however, the Constitution is quite clear about expulsion:

Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.

There are no words in that section that limit that power to any specific circumstances. Not every action has to be considered as setting a precedent. This is a very unique circumstance. The Senate could seat him and then immediately expel him. I don’t see where SCOTUS could block it.

These idiots couldn’t make the cut on the next American Idol and make the likes of Britney Spears and Madonna look like Rhodes Scholar’s.

Watching Democrats play the race card is as old as the day is long.Watching them play it against each other is PRICELESS!!!

Here is another example of the democratic elite basing someone’s credentials and expertise on the color of their skin:

With Extreme Prejudice
By JAMES TARANTO
March 21, 2008
http://www.veracifier.com/post/6398/john-kerry-obamas-cred-is-due-to-his-race

It’s a real jaw-dropper. ABC News’s Jake Tapper sums it up:
Kerry said that a President Obama would help the US, in relations with Muslim countries,

“in some cases go around their dictator leaders to the people and inspire the people in ways that we can’t otherwise.”

“He has the ability to help us bridge the divide of religious extremism,” Kerry said. “To maybe even give power to moderate Islam to be able to stand up against this radical misinterpretation of a legitimate religion.”

Kerry was asked what gives Obama that credibility.
“Because he’s African-American. Because he’s a black man. Who has come from a place of oppression and repression through the years in our own country.”

But democrats are “colorblind” right.

I love this”place of oppression and repression”:

Where is this “place of oppression and repression” in which Obama has suffered “through the years”? Hawaii? Harvard? The Senate? We should find out immediately and do something about this horrific crisis.

I mean really…how could you possibly sit through a dinner conversation with this type of pathetic drivel coming out of this super smart liberals mouth.

Jerry Springer could not put on a more hilarious show than the democrats are putting on right now.

Baxter Greene on December 30, 2008 at 7:19 PM

i know you don’t, but it really is. i think a lot of people on the right wish that black/white relations were like italian/irish or italian/puertorican relations where the occasional spic/wop/mic joke gets taken in stride, but it’s not like that.

…well the black panthers are equal to the KKK.

i don’t think they are. the paradox is that they both killed mostly black people. believe it or not, that is a direct effect of 300 years of slavery followed by segregation.

Hey, give it to Burris. After all, that’s a chocolate Senate seat.

Baxter Greene on December 30, 2008 at 7:19 PM

like i said: lefty mentality. i used to live with a protest-puppet maker. we both came from middleclass suburbs (though he had a maid and went to a private school growing up), and he kept trying to convince me that we stopped being middleclass and became “poor” on the sole basis of income. that always stuck with me – not just because he proceeded from there to tell me that i don’t understand poor people as well as he anyway, but because i’ve known a lot of such types: “poor” and “homeless” people with college degrees and infinite family resources who nonetheless subsist off of social security benefits.

eh on December 30, 2008 at 7:33 PM

I thought Americans would reject Obama out of revulsion at his frequent use of the race card, but I was wrong.

So now I’ll be pessimistic and say that Americans love being called racists by “wonderful” fellows like Bobby Rush.

Throw in Rangel, Dodd with “freezer Jefferson’s” trial coming up and draining that swamp is starting to look even more of a farce than Al-gore’s fear mongering global warming

Blagojevich names Burris for Obama seat

By Hal Weitzman in Chicago and Andrew Ward in Washington

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/d3b7b68a-d69b-11dd-9bf7-000077b07658.html

It is unclear whether Senate leaders have the power to prevent Mr Burris taking the seat but their statement yesterday warned that, at a minmum, he would be barred from the Democratic caucus.

“unclear” is code word for lawyers being able to make a total cluster fu$k of this whole situation.
“Yes we can”,”Yes we can”!!!

Illinois’ constitution does not require a governor to leave office when charged with corruption. Moreover, as governor, Mr Blagojevich could legally make a Senate appointment even if he were in prison. Mr Blagojevich, who denies any wrongdoing, faces a preliminary court hearing on January 14.

I am also starting to hear some of the pundits mention that no matter what the Senate does, the Supreme Court will probably rule in favor of Blago boy.

For a party that basis all of it’s decision making on polls and the political winds, this is going to be ugly watching those approval ratings go “back” to single digits for the “smart ones”.

With economic and international crisis reaching critical mass, this circus of morons is the leadership we have place.
Thanks for the “Hope” and you can keep the “change”.

Baxter Greene on December 30, 2008 at 7:40 PM

.”reverse racism” is a problem. ALL racism is a problem, but when you hide behind your color and pull the race card and try to guilt everyone into installing a man or woman based on color, I have to call bullsh*t. I am sick of the race card.
This is 2008, we, not me, but the Americans that want free everything voted in a man of color, 1/2 black, uh 1/2 white, and it’s time to burn the deck.
We are all equal. STFU already.

I’m with ya. I’m raising the BS flag myself. It’s wrong to deny someone a job because of his or her race…and it’s just as wrong to GIVE someone a job just because of his or her race.

Oh. My. Frickin. God. That was beautiful. That was one of the most beautiful displays of political bullshit/theatrics I have ever seen. In it’s own twisted way it was stunningly impressive to behold. Cancer ridden Bobby Rush, former Black Panther, now entrenched Dem Congressman has the GALL to inch his way up to the microphone and claim that opposing Roland Burris is racism. Oh Chicago race politics will you never cease to entertain, bemuse and horrify? I think not. Harold Washington had a point. Folks who get killed or beaten down by the police have a point. But Roland Burris with Bobby Rush pleading for him. The audacity of pandering!

And yes I’m a progressive/liberal/whatever. But this is absolutely ridiculous and I think conservatives have it 100% right on this crap.

I’m interested in the answer to this, too. From all I understand about Hawaii, just about everyone who is actually FROM there is of mixed ancestry; it’s just a part of who they are, and they’re quite proud of it. I just don’t see the oppression…

Is this some kind of “martyrdom” syndrome or have they had it so easy that this is the only way they can feel like they are accomplishing something in life or “keeping it real”.

In my business I often take care of expensive cars and my accounts will sometimes ask me to go to their homes to take care of the PDR.
You would ride into the upscale neighborhoods and stop at a store where all the rich white kids are hanging (or according to them “gang banging”) in front of the stores with their pants down to their knees and talking like they are “Puff daddy”.These kids don’t know a da#n thing about Compton or ghetto life and the irony is that most of the people living in the ghetto would love to have the privialge
life they are rejecting.

Just running to stand still.

There is a lot of economic oppression in Hawaii, because the cost of living on the islands keeps going up and up. It also has a history of oppressed native labor on sugar plantations. But you’re right, culturally there’s a natural multi-culturalism in Hawaii that makes it really different than the mainland. It’s not surprising that the first black President emerged from a social setting where overt racism wasn’t really the norm.

That sums it up perfectly.
I don’t want to demean or ridicule adolescent cultural cycles like my parents and many others did with my long hair and Led Zeppelin T-shirts in pursuit of our Magical Mystery tour.

But I don’t remember our generations fads or lifestyles being so destructive across the board as this is(I know, drug use is a big problem)concerning the celebration of the abuse of women, pursuit of money and material things being NO.1,and violence considered so cool and necessary.
I mean we enjoyed partying and sex as much as this generation, but violence against women would get your a$$ kicked in a big hurry and we did everything we could to prevent pregnancy.
Having a bunch of kids spread around that you are not supporting and showing everybody naked pictures of your girlfriend/Wife on your phone while you brag about all the”bitc#s” your nailing and keeping in line seems to be a wright of passage for the average youth now.
Driving around in a $50,000 Benz while you still live at home with your parents is talked about with glee while they are getting by “for nothing”.
“just point me to the club!!”
It is not everybody and I may be a little to critical, but when I went to college at night while I worked during the day,the students from India,China, and Pakistan to name a few
were light years ahead of us(major Computer information systems/Business).
We are not going to be the “leaders” in any category if we have to compete with the focus and hunger of other nations with the average spoiled, entitled American.

…OK…here’s the scene:

You’re being presented to the press, which is to say God and everybody, by a governor so corrupt that it’s only the fact of Thomas Nast’s death that prevents his being immortalized in print standing next to Boss Tweed…as this governor’s candidate for a Senate seat that the Feds have hard evidence (evidently) that this same governor was trying to sell….

…what kinda cohones do you have to have to think you can pull this one off?

Even the Dems are treating Blago as sort of a post-Obama Julius-Streicher-at-the-bar-mitzvah pariah. Burris, if’n I remember correctly, was in on the ground-floor of Obama, Inc., and — in his one admirable move lately — Mr. O’s at the head of the pack to throw him under the taxpayer-subsidized mass-transit conveyance….

…all we need here are rumors of a Ring of Power unaccounted for, and the story would be epic…as it is, it’s just Democrats being Democrats….

Puritan1648 on December 30, 2008 at 8:38 PM

His sole argument seemed to be that Burris’s appointment should be honored because Burris is black. There was absolutely no further nuance to his position.

Were you on Mars for the recent Presidential election? Cut away all the BS and that is why most of OBama’s supporters voted for him.

For all my adult life I strove to ignore candidates’ ethnicity, gender, religion, color, whatever, even long before I heard about how right that was from people who said they were moral leaders.

But then it turns out that all the things that I knew on first principles were wrong for me to do, were just great for those moral leaders to do just as soon as they got the chance to.

Guess how much moral authority they have with me now?

drunyan8315 on December 30, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Has anyone else seen the humongous monument Burris has built for himself at Oak Woods Cemetery for “future use?” The Crypt over at Politico has a great picture, you can even read some of the inscriptions he’s had placed on it. Starting with a great big “Trail Blazer.”

Seriously, who does this kind of thing?
