NYC deputy mayor pushing Caroline for Senate gives up in frustration

posted at 5:24 pm on December 30, 2008 by Allahpundit

Here’s what happens when you try a shock-and-awe PR strategy with a dud of a candidate as its centerpiece. Result: Paterson’s now interviewing other people for the seat and not being shy about publicizing it.

“Everything was backfiring,” said one source of the intense behind-the-scenes effort by Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey.

“He’s not out front any more.”

The source said that Sheekey had hoped to round up overwhelming support for Kennedy very quickly so she would become the inevitable choice when Gov. Paterson selects the successor to Hillary Clinton…

“They tried to take everybody else out,” said the source. “It didn’t work. They were out there way, way too early.”…

“She wasn’t prepped enough,” said the source. “She wasn’t ready to do this.”

Sheekey’s a longtime Bloomberg crony who apparently knows her through his work for Schwarzenegger. How smart is it is to have America’s foremost daughter of privilege being touted by a lackey of one of America’s richest men? This smart:

They worry that the Bloomberg administration’s advocacy for Ms. Kennedy will only reinforce her image as a privileged Upper East Sider whose biggest base of support is from Manhattan’s exclusive social set.

“It appears to be another case of central casting by the city’s cognoscenti,” said a Democratic city councilman, John C. Liu. “It’s amazing how much it’s all about the upper crust.”

Rory I. Lancman, a state assemblyman, said that there was “a growing concern that high public office is being reserved for a better class of people — people who can buy into it like Michael Bloomberg or people who can come into it through their celebrity like Caroline Kennedy.”

She’s still a contender, I assume, but the one thing a celebrity candidate can’t afford to be is ridiculous and that horse, alas for poor Caroline, has already left the barn. Submitted for your approval below, the verbal-tic director’s cut. Exit question: As bad as she is, there are worse appointments Paterson could make, no?

So slips away the possibility of having the last totem of Camelot shine on the birth of the Obama dynasty.

Still there is a good chance that Bill Clinton will be able to recreate his own memorable age of Cameltoe with little effort.

It’s premature to say “no more Kennedys”. Ted is pushing his wife as a candidate for his seat should that be necessary. I do not know MA’s rule for filling un-finished terms, but if it is by appointment–this particular appointment will come within seconds of his dying breath. If it is by special election, it will come some weeks later.

I urged that kings and queens were dangerous. He said, then have cats. He was sure that a royal family of cats would answer every purpose. They would be as useful as any other royal family, they would know as much, they would have the same virtues and the same treacheries, the same disposition to get up shindies with other royal cats, they would be laughably vain and absurd and never know it, they would be wholly inexpensive, finally, they would have as sound a divine right as any other royal house. The worship of royalty being founded in unreason, these graceful and harmless cats would easily become as sacred as any other royalties, and indeed more so, because it would presently be noticed that they hanged nobody, beheaded nobody, imprisoned nobody, inflicted no cruelties or injustices of any sort, and so must be worthy of a deeper love and reverence than the customary human king and queen, and would certainly get it.

I thought of that for a moment too. If she had suddenly got choked up when she mentioned her late brother, I bet that would have given her a boost in the polls. She didn’t try to play it up, and I do respect that.

Ironically, I think this whole bizarre episode has revealed that Caroline Kennedy, despite coming from a long line of brilliant political manipulators, lacks political instincts.

And strangely her whole demeanor gives me the impression that she’s on quaaludes. Take the Tina Fey impersonation of Palin, make the accent a little more Brooklyn, then drink two bottles of NyQuil and you have a perfect impersonation of Caroline.

The Kennedy Center Honors are on tonight. The honorees are Morgan Freeman, okay I like him, Barbra the dumbass Streisand, Twyla Tharp, Pete Townsend, once suspected of child porn possession and Roger Daltrey former so he says drug addict. A stellar list of honorees. Looks like Caroline hangs with a very impressive crowd.

That Associated Press article Allah linked to is just pathetic. They go out of their way to explain away the stupidity of Kennedy’s valid nonsense. Funny I don’t recall the AP being so charitable about the treatment of Palin.

They did note this:

Bloggers have torn into President John F. Kennedy’s Harvard- and Columbia-educated daughter for such remarks as: “You know, I think, really, um, this is sort of a unique moment, both in our, you know, in our country’s history and in, you know, my own life, and, um, you know, we are facing, you know, unbelievable challenges.”

They had to get that part in there about Harvard and Columbia before they showed the reader the direct quote of Caroline’s words. They wouldn’t want anyone to conclude that she’s an airhead. She went to Harvard and Columbia you know.

Iowahawk Guest Opinion
by Rosa Ortiz
Chief of Housekeeping Staff
Estate of Caroline Kennedy

Buenos dias! I am Rosa. I twelve years work for Senora Caroline Kennedy and her family so I am write for you today to tell you why Senora Kennedy is make very very good senator for Nueva York. Senora Kennedy is very busy now with party menus so she tell me to write this when I am finish with floors and make the bed for guest wing. I am now finish so I write this.

Senora Kennedy is very very sad that television man say he no think she is make a good senator in Washington. This is not right for you to think this too because Senora Kennedy is make very good senator! Here is the reasons:

Senora Kennedy she is from famous senator family. Senora Kennedy father was El Presidente. She have tio who is senator. She have many cousin who also is senator, even all the ones with the drug problems. Why she is only one who no is senator? This is no fair to her. In my old country was the law that all family of el Presidente is also Senator or Minister until the revolucion.

Senora Kennedy is many plaques. She have a diploma from the Senator school and many trophies. She have many famous photografias and autografias. I know this because I have to clean her office every Tuesday and is very hard for to dust all this many things.

Senora Kennedy have very many busy jobs. She is edit the book for the children and the poetry. She also choose the winners for the many awards she is boss for. It is make her very tired, but every day Senora is go to work for the volunteer to raise the money for the awards and the charity. She have many parties at the home and the museum. She work very hard to shop for the new gowns and invitacions. She is also make the seating arrange and hide the tequila from Tio Teddy so he not get borracho. This she do for the poor.

Senora Kennedy she is the good mother. She is raise her two girls by herself, with the nannies, and every night read the girls the poetry book she edit. The nannies are go now because the girls they also are go off now to Senator school.

Senora Kennedy she is always know the issues. Every morning she always tell me, “Rosa, where is my New York Time paper?” Then she read it before she go to Fifth Avenue for the shopping. When she get back she tell me to put it in the recycle because to save the planet.

Senora Kennedy is the good boss for the people. She treat everybody on the staff very nice and no yell. We all get one day off in the week and she give the $200 bonus this Christmas. Except Maria because she broke the crystal bowl in the office when she dusting.

Senora Kennedy knows how to call the taxi. Senora Kennedy say to tell you she sometime call taxi by herself.

This is why you should no listen to the people who say she no be a good senator. Senora Kennedy is make the best senator because she is the pure full blood of the Kennedy, and no one drop of mestizo. When she is senator maybe she give you $200 bonus if you no break anything or be disloyal. Extra $100 if you write a good blog about her.

I have to fold laundry now. Also Tio Teddy is come to the party tonight so I have to lock the liquor cabinets.

Cheshire Cat on December 30, 2008 at 11:59 PM

I agree. I don’t think Caroline is stupid, and I certainly don’t think Palin is stupid. It’s the double standard that angers me.

It’s worse than the double standard. It is one woman who has so admirably made much of herself, and another who grew up with every possible advantage, perk, and pull. AND maid service.

And they DARE take the one who made so much of herself – and speaks so well (long sentences notwithstanding), and call her stupid and ridicule everything about her. While taking the one born with the silver spoon in her Valley Girl mouth and think she’s smarter and more capable, and treat her with respect and deference.

Do you know what that means for the most of us women, who have worked hard to get our education, and to get where we are?

It means we are stupid, and we don’t count. (Though we might count a LITTLE if we have the “right” politics; i.e., theirs.)

If we have children, it proves we are dolts. If Caroline has children, it proves her capable.

If we have jobs, we are incompetent. But if we head up the right social committees, we are qualified for anything.

My goodness, you could be the governor of Alaska and still not as qualified for public office as a socialite dilettante@ You can be the successful and popular governor of Alaska, look good, have five kids and a happy marriage, know how to COOK, for God’s sake – and all it does is prove you are trailer trash, to be vilified and sneered at.

Trailer trash. That’s how they look on most of us regular women. (Unless of course, we share their political views, in which case they will probably keep their trailer trash remarks to themselves.)

Double standards would be one thing. What kills me is they have to totally destroy the more remarkable women with slurs and insults not fit for a dog. Chauvinist pigs, the lot of them. (Their women included.)

If the Democratic party was ever for the working person and the regular citizen, it no longer is. It’s now the party of sneering, better-than-thou, gutter-mouth insult-masters.

Let them eat cake.

And that goes EQUALLY for any conservatives who found themselves “embarrassed” by a successful, accomplished, and smart woman, just because she didn’t go to the right school come from the right state, or have the right hobbies and accent.

Right on, sister! Loved everything you said.

As Laura Ingraham said, “the left hates the fact that someone like Sarah Palin even exists.” They have contempt for the working class people. The left only likes the working class when they can exploit them with the politics of envy.

The left is “tolerant” of any opinion unless it contradicts their own. If Palin had been a liberal Democrat, they would have hailed her as the new feminist icon. But because she is pro-life, she must be destroyed. Scratch the surface of the deranged irrational hatred of her and you’ll see the letters A-B-O-R-T-I-O-N etched in stone.

I spent my life working with highly educated people – PhD’s in any science, engineering field or math field you could name. The vast majority, I say again, the vast majority had no common sense and literally could not pour water out of a boot even after telling them the instructions were on the bottom. One PhD’s wife had to call him every afternoon and remind him to come home.
Caroline is an example of education meaning she stayed in school longer than some people. It’s obvious none of it went to her head.

I think you summed up the msm’s attitude just right. Your description reminds of a study I read about where some college did a study of liberals and conservatives asking each group a set of questions. Then they asked each group to put themselves in each others mindsets and asked the same questions asking each group to answer as they thought the other would. The study found that conservatives can easily put themselves in the mindset of liberals and answer the questions almost exactly as the liberal would, but the liberal could not even come close to approximating the conservatives answers. They definitely do not have the slightest understanding of who we are or what our beliefs are.

church on December 30, 2008 at 8:06 PM

Right on! I can go into pretend liberal mode on a dime as a conservative because I know them so well and their philosophies to a certain extent. When they start trying to articulate conservatism, they don’t come close. I have to assist them on what American Conservatism is and the different strains.

Just this Christmas I was talking to my niece’s husband. He was surprised when I told him that the BBC is considered your establishment liberal news organization. And this from a greenie, CA Ron Paul fan? WTF? You can’t be a Paulist AND be an environment freek at the expense of other stuff.

The liberals today remind me of an anecdote I heard from David Horowitz (I think it was). When he was a kid and was watching one of those US Communist Party parades, he asked someone else in the crowd what the people were marching for. The person he asked turned around and said, “They’re marching for you, dumbass!” or words to that effect. Anyway, it captures what’s fundamentally wrong with the Left.
