Breaking: Blagojevich appoints former Illinois attorney general to Senate seat; Update: “Unacceptable,” says Reid; Update: Can the Senate refuse to seat Burris?

He’s facing impeachment and federal prison, and both the Illinois legislature and Harry Reid warned him not to make the pick. His lawyer insisted that he wouldn’t. What’s a delusional narcissist to do? Why, make the pick, of course. Blagomania!
Gov. Rod Blagojevich is expected today to name former Illinois Atty. Gen. Roland Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate…
Shortly after Obama’s Nov. 4 victory, Burris made known his interest in an appointment to the Senate but was never seriously considered, according to Blagojevich insiders. But in the days following Blagojevich’s arrest, and despite questions over the taint of a Senate appointment, Burris stepped up his efforts to win the governor’s support.
Though he is 71, Burris has said that Obama’s replacement should be able to win re-election and he has noted that despite a string of primary losses in races ranging from Chicago mayor to governor and U.S. senator, he’s never lost to a Republican…
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada previously warned Blagojevich, following the governor’s Dec. 9 arrest, that Senate Democrats would not seat any appointment the two-term Democratic governor made. Reid’s warning was contained in a letter signed by all 50 sitting Democratic senators, including the No. 2 Democrat in Senate leadership, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois.
He was state comptroller for 12 years and AG for four in the mid-nineties, then lost a bunch of mayoral and gubernatorial primaries. That’s all I know about him — except, of course, that he’ll now be the Senate’s only black member, leaving Reid in a simply glorious predicament of whether to seat him or not. Why he might: Obama’s seat is up for reelection in just two years, and given Burris’s low profile and history of losing to more popular Democrats, he’d be an especially weak incumbent in the primary. Reid could seat him secure in the belief that Democratic voters will pick someone they prefer soon enough and that the nominee will romp to victory in the general after a few campaign appearances on his behalf from The One. Why he might not: According to Geraghty, Burris is a donor to Blago and a crony of his political allies. That’s probably enough of a taint to justify rejecting him, his Absolute Moral Authority notwithstanding. Exit question: What’ll Reid do?
Update: If the point was to call Reid’s bluff by appointing someone he dare not reject, why not really go for it and appoint Oprah? She’s America’s pope! Poprah!
Update: The only thing that could make this sweeter is if Blago opens the presser by saying the idea came to him in a dream or that God told him to do it or something. This crazy goes to 11.
Update: There’s actually an easy way for Reid to get cover on the identity politics of this: Just have Obama issue a statement that Burris is a fine public servant but that the appointment is so irredeemably tainted that the only solution is a special election.
Update: Total clusterfark — Reid says no deal. Good lord, the press conference this afternoon should be dynamite.
Update: Who wrote this chummy little farewell?
“As sons of immigrants to this country, you and I have a deep appreciation for the opportunities America provides to those who are willing to work hard and sacrifice for their children.”
Update: Better and better and better: During the 1998 gubernatorial race, Burris was evidently caught on tape calling two of his opponents “non-qualified white boys.”
Update: Dingy Harry insists that Burris won’t be seated. Minor problem: Does he have the constitutional authority to do that? Probably not, thanks to — ta da — Earl Warren.
In 1969, the Supreme Court ruled that the House of Representatives could not refuse to seat Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., a New York Democrat who was accused of putting his wife on the payroll and misusing travel funds to vacation in the Caribbean. Despite those charges, he had been reelected by his constituents in Harlem.
“The Constitution does not vest in the Congress a discretionary power to deny membership by majority vote,” wrote Chief Justice Earl Warren. Congress may “judge only the qualifications set forth in the Constitution,” he said.
The qualifications are minimal. A senator must be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen and “an inhabitant” of the state.
They might have the authority to challenge the appointment on whether or not it’s legally valid, but there’s no raging dispute about that in this case as far as I know. Until Blago’s impeached, he’s the governor, and it’s the governor’s call to make. Glorious secondary exit question: Are we headed for a bona fide constitutional showdown in the Supreme Court over this idiocy?

The Absolute moral authority would make it dicey indeed to not appoint him but I think Reed will reject him because most likely he will have the support of “The One”.

As an IL resident, I’m pretty convinced that either Aston Kutcher is going to come on TV one of these days and punk us or that Blago is a secret Republican plant.
Also, I’m now pretty convinced that the IL Senate seat will probably go to a Republican in two years. It’s pretty tainted now, and the Messiah is not going to be popular as he is now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does get some criticism over his non-response about the Gaza issue especially if the Israelis intensify their incursion.

He should follow our Dear Leader and vote ‘Present’ on this one.
In truth, he’ll do what Obama tells him to do. If Obama says that the guy should be seated, Reid will have no choice. If Obama says that it’s too tainted, Obama’s rejection will give Reid political cover to refuse to seat the only black Senator.

Be funny if Blago actually meant to appoint Plaxico Burress to the seat (who’s going to argue with a man who’s got a gun in his pants?)
You’re actually assuming Obama’s going to make a controversial decision that could anger factions within his own political party?
He’s voting ‘present’ on this one, at least until Burris has been totally vetted by the Illinois media and the first half dozen polling numbers have come out.
jon1979 on December 30, 2008 at 1:28 PM
Reid is stuck, he has to affirm…or offer Burris a better deal…
Seat him and you go back on your promise, don’t and you are a racist.
Obama will step forward and say this is a good pick, let’s move on.
Winning Reid’s adornment, and keeping Illinois out of a mess, and Burris as an allay…easy choice for Obama.
right2bright on December 30, 2008 at 1:29 PM
You guys don’t get it.
Blago is not “crazy”.
What he is, is a typical arrogant Democrat who flaunts the rules because they always get away with it- the MSM won’t cover these stories to the extent they would a Republican.
Continuing to call Blago “crazy” lessens the obviousness of the Double Standard.

Reid can’t reject Burris on his own, and he’ll probably look around and find not too many Senators eager to kick Burris out the door. On what basis? That he was appointed by a crook? Is that unique in history? Unless President Obama goes after Burris, my guess is he’ll end up in the Senate.

ROTFLMAO!
peski on December 30, 2008 at 1:42 PM
He’s not crazy and this is a brilliant strategic move locally, because unless the Illinois Democratic machine can quickly get African-American political leaders in the state to come out against the Burris selection, it threatens to create a “guilt-by-association” divide between the party’s main leaders and their most loyal voting block. Not good for the 2010 election or a special election in 2009 if you now name a white senator and your key constituency stays home Election Day (as happened with the Georgia Senate runoff).
It’s also why Obama’s likely to wait to see which way the wind blows before running out there and joining Harry Reid in his condemnation. But however it turns out, it’s going to be a fun story to watch, because there’s not a Republican within 50 miles of this that Democrats can blame their problems on.
jon1979 on December 30, 2008 at 1:43 PM
the cynic in me say Reid and the Donks are behind this. this is a moot issue in 2 years if blago appoints someone and Reid leads the fight to deny him the seat. its hard to say the dems have a culture of corruption if thats the case. in fact it makes them look like they wont put up w/ this kinda thing. while we may no better the average guy on the streets doesnt. he doesnt hear about reid’s land deals and pelosi’s son’s job 3000 miles away from his house. but they hear about a high profile corruption case like this and see dem leadership doing something about it.
i only wish our leadership had been more vocal and active w/a certain toe-tapping senator a few years back. i think once again the dems have stole a march on us.

We are having a virtual media firestorm here in Chicago right now. Both the Tribune and the Sun Times, plus every local news service here is covering this story. Based on what I am seeing from comments being posted in the Tribune and the Sun Times, people out here are outraged beyond belief about what Blagojevich is doing here. It is just making Illinois more an object of ridicule than it already is.
If this isn’t a clear demonstration of the absolute arrogance of this guy, I don’t know what is!
Oh. expect Burris to cheerfully accept the appointment. He is yet another well known assclown Chicago Democratic Machione politician who will most likely be completely gleeful that he has been appointed.
Never mind the fact that he is going to end up embarrassing himself after the Senate rejects him.

This is going to be interesting. Thought it was going to be special election? And the Illinois people are ok with this? I don’t know Chicago politics real good. Only the people that live there would not only know it. But has seen it. The Government is getting out of hand. NYT had article to put gas at 4.00 and some odd cents. Then, our Government wants to tax us for that. Also, a Oregon Gov. wants tracking devices that you cannot remove, put on all cars. People, this is getting serious now. We are the only ones that can stop them. Is not just ill. But it is spreading like poison.

As a resident of IL, I’m as amused by Blago as the rest of you. As long as it doesn’t affect Chicago’s ability to clear the snow (the only thing the Combine does well) or shut down the EL and thereby making it harder for me to get to Chicago (last year’s Blago crisis involved CTA funding), I’m all for the entertainment.
Why exactly are people shocked? Blago’s already shown himself to be very clueless. BTW, when do the federal troops come to the state and overthrow our corrupt govt.? I promise you that unlike Iraq, they will be greeted as liberators.

Rumors from old-timers formerly at the ILL AG’s office are that Burris was heavy-handed in selling tickets for fundraisers to AG staff, a practice now banned by the Illinois Ethics Act, but that was practice as usual in Illinois state government at the time.

There was going to be a special election, but then Reid found out that both Republicans and Democrats would be running in that election and there would be a good chance that a suburban Chicago Republican would be able to take that seat. The Dems. are extra scared of Mark Kirk, who represents the North Shore (the really ritzy suburbs north of the city); he was reelected by a greater margin than in 2006 despite the fact that he was running against an Obama lookalike in a district Obama carried with 60% of the vote. Also, Blago would have to sign any bill that passed, and that wasn’t going to happen.

The first snow storm this season I’d agree with you on that point; it took my two and half hours to get home and they did a pretty shoddy job clearing the snow.
