The obligatory “Barack the Magic Negro controversy” post

Tapper reminds us of the song’s genesis in a lefty LA Times op-ed about conventions of authenticity, which the lyrics parody, and The One’s good humor in laughing it off when asked about it last year (“I don’t mind folks poking fun at me”). Which leaves us with a tediously predictable debate: If the song’s not clearly racist, should Chip Saltsman be scolded for circulating it? Some righties say yes, since we know what the media will do with it and how that’ll affect voter perceptions of the GOP; others say no, that they’ll be damned before they let the left set the parameters for what’s politically correct. Count me in the former group with Geraghty and John Avlon. There are perhaps principles so important that it’s worth risking the party’s viability to defend them — strong borders, an end to bailoutmania — but the use of an archaic term like “Negro” that’s disfavored by blacks doesn’t strike me as one of them. If you disagree and think the real principle here is resisting an ever-expanding Orwellian universe of “unacceptable” terms, fair enough. But be prepared to divert party resources from other business to try to convince blacks that they shouldn’t feel uneasy about words that cause them unease.
All while trying to expand the tent, of course.
Avlon:
Saltsman presumably did not intend to offend by mailing out the parody CD by Paul Shanklin with songs that first aired during the campaign on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. A look at the lyrics shows that the song’s real target is the Al Sharpton-sound-alike singer who feels that Obama has usurped his rightful place as the protest leader of African-American politics. But now that Obama has been elected the president of all Americans, and Saltsman is attempting to run for leader of the opposition party, the song—whose title comes from a Los Angeles Times column—could not help but become a lightning rod. The failure to anticipate the outrage points to the blinders that exist in racially homogenous Republican backrooms. Conservatives who take good ol’ boy pride in being politically incorrect are either unaware or don’t care that they come off as being somewhere between indifferent and hostile to the full diversity of American life…
Obama won in large part because he appealed to the better angels of our nature, and himself looks like America in the 21st century. Republicans need to respond with something better than cynicism or sarcasm. They need to rediscover their founding ideals, confront the ghosts of their past, and present a party that looks like America to regain credibility as The Party of Lincoln.
Most candidates for RNC chair have gone the pragmatic route, as has Newt Gingrich. But Ken Blackwell, leveraging his own Absolute Moral Authority, cannily absolved Saltsman. If this “scandal” gets big enough, I wonder if the RNC won’t try to defuse it by making him chair. Exit invitation: Vote it out!

This is just a distraction from the real issue, which is that this country just elected an unqualified, inexperienced and possibly corrupt President solely because of the color of his skin.
Oh wait, is that racist too?
Dammit.

Darn it. Now I’ve got that damned tune in my head and I can’t get it out.

Not a Big deal, but the media needs something to kick around about hoe bad the GOP is, but I still think it looks like rookie hour for Saltzman.
rob verdi on December 29, 2008 at 3:08 PM
In 2000 we elected the most statist, big government President in history because Karl Rove convinced us all he was a conservative. That’s politics.
lodge on December 29, 2008 at 3:09 PM
how bad of course, by the way considering how this game is played I believe it ends with Saltzy getting few if any votes.
rob verdi on December 29, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Must be your basic Slow News Day.
If Saltzman is dumb, so was the LAT writer who came up with the dumb comment in the first place, and so are Geraghty and all the others who are getting their knickers in a twist about it.
MrScribbler on December 29, 2008 at 3:10 PM
To people who follow politics, this may not be a big deal. To the regular person who just hears the song title, doesn’t know the backgroud, and connects it to a high-ranking Republican? Epic fail, dude. Good luck convincing them you aren’t one of those knuckle-dragging Republicans they always hear about in the media.
theotherKate on December 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM
If Rush hits on this (when he gets back from vacation), it will all be moot. Any (D) or (R) that tries to play politically correct on this will be made out to be a laughing stock.
Remember “The Letter” he auctioned off? Ya, it doesnt work out too well when members of congress take him on.
RiteWingFascist on December 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM
I’m dealing with this by equating it to (WARNING: NON-PC STATEMENT FOLLOWS) kissing the fat girl at the high school dance. Sooner or later somebody has to do it. Then the pressure is off. Might as well get it over with.
BobMbx on December 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Obama and his supporters are such lightweights. Can’t take a little parody. Haven’t they been listening to all trash talk President Bush has been taking for the last eight years. What are these people going to do when real attacks come.

He is a mulatto.

My first impression of the song was “stupid”. So was my second impression.
But it doesn’t get to the point of being offensive. If anyone wants to gripe about it being stupid and/or juvenile, go for it.
But it’s not racist, and it annoys me when some folks who ought to know better start going all PC. Given my choice between someone who is juvenile and someone who is a knee-jerk PC reactionary, I’ll take the candidate behind door #3 please!
jefferson101 on December 29, 2008 at 3:14 PM
I hop everyone understands that the media story line is Obama and the Dems grapple with the worlds problems and Repubs grapple with songs.
rob verdi on December 29, 2008 at 3:15 PM
People are whining about a satirist now.
Heavens folks, we wouldn’t want to promote an offensive satire.
Saltzman still looks idiotic, I suppose.
But really, this is just another shoutout from the religion of selective outrage (liberalism).
BKennedy on December 29, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Are you kidding? Just publicly questioning the man’s ability can be enough for the liberal fascists to sic the hounds of hell on you. A certain plumber learned that the hard way, and I suspect he was not the first nor will he be the last.

So in this phase of the story, it’s Blackwell playing the role of Magic Negro. Sauce for the gander, but it’s not any tastier for being made of elephant.

No need to defend the RNC honchos for their capacity to make fools of themselves.
It’s a good thing this dude won’t make it to the chairship. Better to know now, than later.
On the other hand the PC craziness, and double standards, will kill us all, slowly and fast.
I wish my household engineer/architect/whatever would show up daily so I can play all day during my holiday time off.
“Barack, the über-cool” would have been so much better – the media came up too late with the perfect, and PC, description.
Entelechy on December 29, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Let me get this straight. Rush has played this parody
many times on his radio show, in mocking Al Sharpton. People are now just getting pissed about it. Please, give me a handkerchief so I can wipe my eyes. I am laughing so hard. Oh Stop…. Please, I’ll wet myself.
USMCDevilDog on December 29, 2008 at 3:17 PM
I don´t think it is racist. People are looking too hard for something to be offended by. But it IS a public relations mistake. And if a politician makes mistakes like that, he is not the right choice for a job that involves a lot of public relations. That is just how it is.
el gordo on December 29, 2008 at 3:19 PM
While putting the song out as he did was politically stupid. It is only stupid because the masses do not think anymore. They hear the word “negro’ and think it is racist. It is no more racist than the dictionary. Of course, we on the right see many of our friends act all uppity over it. Can I say “uppity” ?
Jamson64 on December 29, 2008 at 3:20 PM
I don’t think that’s the point. I think the point is that the song was a satire of the LA Times and reveals the double standard that the Right has to face in the media. Has the author of the article it’s riffing off of found himself in nearly as much trouble as Rush Limbaugh or this Saltsman guy?
That said, yes, it was a poor choice at best, and downright idiotic at worst (these guys are politically-minded, right?) but I don’t think the use of the word “negro” is what conservatives keep getting pissed about when it comes to the song.
apollyonbob on December 29, 2008 at 3:21 PM
Why not just tell black people that Saltzman is black, since there’s apparently no problem using the word Negro is your skin is of a certain color.

Incredibility stupid, RNC. No wonder they had to let go all of their staffers at National HQ.
Lance Murdock on December 29, 2008 at 3:22 PM
My take- I just hope this keeps Saltzman out of the RNC position, so he can’t pull Huck along with him.
I think it was dumb, but I’m self-interested enough to see how this can play against a 2012 candidate I don’t want.

Shouldn’t it be “Barrack the Magic Mulatto”
Firebird on December 29, 2008 at 3:28 PM
I’ve got nothing original to say about this at this point except to repeat (yeah, I’m contradicting myself) my mantra that it’s okay for comedians or satirists to say things that are just not acceptable for public officials.
Absence of malice doesn’t excuse stupidity.
SteveMG on December 29, 2008 at 3:31 PM
So, is “black” a more acceptable moniker than “negro”? I’m sure all our fellow citizens of color in this regard prefer the term “African-American”…but, I’ll be damned if I’ll regularly use that term unless they start calling me German-Italian-Yugoslavian-American in return. What if they’re not from Africa? What if they’re born in the USA? What if their parents immigrated from Jamaica? How will I know? Is there an instruction manual for this?
Sincerely,
Confused Redneck

Kinda off topic, but I saw “Holiday Inn” for the first time this year. The scene for the Abraham Lincoln holiday with Bing and the blonde in blackface was a little shocking to me…guess that’s my public school upbringing.
I really credit Turner Classic for leaving this scene intact.
I hope someday, I’ll credit Rush Limbaugh and Paul Shanklin the same for playing “Barack, The Magic Negro”.

Yeah, Ed. The same people that get offended by this satire think it’s perfectly acceptable to denigrate the men and women serving in the Armed Forces.

Umm…Saltzman thought this was his ticket to the big time? What the hell does he think we are out here in conservative America? We all drive pick up trucks with lift kits & loaded gun racks in the back window, yell yahoo at the Monster Truck derby while we spit some “chaw” on our Red Wing boots, have Coon Hounds and the Little Missus back at the home “where all good women ought to be”? The song was funny the first time when used by Rush as a parody but not now!
What a rube and a clown! And I’m surprised the RNC didn’t go for it!
sabbott on December 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM
The term ‘negro’ is not racist. It is what the community CHOSE to be called (along with ‘colored’) as opposed to the ‘n word’.
United NEGRO College Fund
NEGRO league (baseball that inspires memories of great athletes)
These things are only ‘racist’ when the black community thinks they can get something for being ‘victimized’ or the white community suffers from an unhealthy bout of ‘white guilt’ (which I imagine is where AP falls).
It is stupid to be outraged at words. If words communicate something then they shouldn’t be ‘offensive’. Even if it were ‘offensive’ that speech is protected by the first amendment. You don’t have to ‘explain’, you don’t have to ‘apologize’, just be real and give everyone the same opportunities and what you say shouldn’t be that important.
Of course on slow news days ‘racism’ is an easy sell for a larger audience.
ThackerAgency on December 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM
It’s not magic that got a semi-caucasian person with light brown skin, elected to the highest office in the land. It was PURE MEDIA BIAS and denial of the stories which would have disqualified any person of European descent on the opposite ticket.
Prove me wrong!! I dare you!
BoomJunkie on December 29, 2008 at 3:53 PM
I’m coming to believe that certain Liberals get away with using those terms publicly, like the one at the LAT, in order to trap Republicans into an impossible situation as soon as the Liberals’ words are discovered. “You’re a RACIST!” “But wait a minute! You said it first!”
If I had been in Rush’s position, I would have mentioned it only once and let it go into the ether. Or maybe, maybe not have mentioned it at all.

lexhamfox on December 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM
I’m with Alvon on this. Fine during the campaign, not fine now.
Originally, this was a Hollywood character sterotype that suggested liberal-guilt-driven hamhanded writing-in of black characters as sanctified rescuers of angst-ridden whites. It was a valid and interesting observation that the same dynamics operated for the press corps in their ask-no-questions, thrill-up-the-leg handling of Obama as the candidate.
Now that Obama’s the President-elect, though, it’s not appropriate. Rescuer or empty suit, he will soon be our President, and this is not a proper way to engage — and especially not for a political party. It’s the sort of childishly insulting stuff one expects from someone like Larouche — or from the left.
Splunge on December 29, 2008 at 4:08 PM
This PC nonsense is annoying, but if a candidate for the RNC Chairmanship didn’t see it coming, then he’s an idiot and not the sort of person the GOP needs leading the party.
Anyone with a modicum of common sense about the modern media-driven PC nuthouse that we live in would have known that a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” would be seen as racially insensitive, whether deservedly or not.
Saltsman is an idiot for not realize this. He’s clearly not ready for a leadership position in which he would have prevent such controversies from sidetracking the GOP in the future.
This moron and his Christmas CD has now given the media another excuse to label the GOP as racially insensitive. Way to go, idiot!
Does anyone think this sort of incompetence should be rewarded with a chairmanship?
ramrocks on December 29, 2008 at 4:11 PM
Politicians say stupid things all the time, the problem we see here is the double standard that is applied by media sources for being indignant and offended vs. just thinking it might be a stupid gesture.
belad on December 29, 2008 at 4:18 PM
You know it makes my skin crawl when I read phrases about “expanding the tent” and “defending the use of words that make some uneasy”.
When oh when are the Goobers of this Republican Party going to figure out that no matter WHAT the Republican Party members say, do, or otherwise take some position in or about, the media will ALWAYS twist it to fit the image they are trying to create in the minds of the voters in order to keep the voters voting for Democrats.
If these same Goobers are going to now dictate that the use of an archaic term, that makes some uneasy, must now be disciplined then expect to expend the same resources you Goobers are so worried about expending on policing what people in the party say or do. Because every chance the media gets it will find some new controversy to twist into the next big faux pau that will have to be disciplined.
And what does it say about the Republican Party if at every turn of every phrase it has those Goobers ready to pounce when the media says pounce.
This whole issue just like many others thrown at the Republican Party by the media is what Obama calls a “distraction”. And you Goobers worrying about this song are simply aiding and abetting the media in their work to distract and paint the Republican Party in a poor light.
woodythesingingcowboy on December 29, 2008 at 4:21 PM
I await Bo Snerdley’s opinion.
And how is it that these stories never mention Spike Lee?
Whatevs. Clumsy move on Saltzman’s part because the media (and the sheeple) are so darned predictable, so why put your toe into a poisoned well if you don’t have to? We should be making fun of Peter Yarrow, but instead we’re stuck trying to explain a parody to a bunch of humorless people.
Buy Danish on December 29, 2008 at 4:23 PM
For Christ’s sake, Spike Lee is responsible for popularizing the term (though I’ve no idea if he coined it). And the anachronism of the word “negro” is a substantial part of the point.
Blacklake on December 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM
Right on Ramrocks.
Yes, the PC police are overreacting and the song is funny.
But, Saltsman has no business being the RNC Chair. If he doesn’t drop out of the running to let Anuzis and Steele duke it out (or join forces with Steele the head and Saul as grassroots/techie/fundraiser dude) then he is a schmuck. You have to be a public relations ACE as RNC Chairman, and Salty isn’t.

I’m with AP on this one. Saltsman is an absolute idiot, IMHO, for picking a needless fight when the GOP is already being hammered on all fronts. It doesn’t matter that we are judged differently in the press than the Dems, who can be bigoted and racist with impunity and no one seems to care. What matters right now is, knowing just what the MSM will do with this little piece of satire, why on earth would he choose this moment to pick a fight that not only is he not going to win, but will further alienate public opinion away from the GOP???

Most of the country didn’t care that Obama had been “mentored” by the child-molester and communist Frank M. Davis. Same goes for Obama spending 20 years as a member of a racist church. Ditto for Obama’s associations and friendships with the likes of anti-American Bill Ayers, racist Rev. Wright, and renowned crook Tony Rezko.
Most of the country voted for Obama because he was half-negro, who they perceived as being “magical,” so what’s the big outrage about a CD song titled – Barack the Magic Negro?!

I’m going to set up a magic negro lemonade stand next to a local black church on Sunday and we may even sell some used black-faced figurines. I have the right to do it and you have inspired me.
Republicans are soooo courageous bringing awareness to these things. 2009 will be amazing!
I’m glad you dropped that “drill, baby, drill” stuff, BTW. You spent a whole 2 weeks on that one. Forget the “no to bailout” thing too. The magic negro thing is the way to go.

We just lost the presidency as well as too many seats in congress.
And how does this song help us?!?!

The only people who have the “right” to use black face imagery, and words like S*mbo are Democrats. Didn’t you know that?
Seriously, those who don’t know the difference between using the word “Negro” and straight-up racial epithets are stupid.

Hello,
I just got done watching all the media reports about Obama which amounts to an education of sorts on this great man, I now call Dear Leader. The 60 minutes piece especially showed me the way and the truth.
Even though the original source of this song material was from a lefty op-ed writer, I am certain that he was using such term in a very elite and intelligent manner. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk are using it to be purely racist.
So please, know now, that Obama and those who write for him in the press are perfect examples of humanness and we all should strive to be like them. Until we align our ideology and thought processes behind those like Dear Leader and his handlers, we can never be permitted to speak about Dear Leader in such disparaging terms without first truly understanding the genesis of such terms and the import of how when such a term is uttered by someone who is ignorant and shall we say stupid, renders said term racist, versus when it is explained in detail and context by a high class, intelligent, progressive we will never heal our divide.
I believe we need to identify anyone and everyone who is against the Obama administration and force their DVRs to be filled with correct reporting on the Obama administration. Until the viewings have been completed and a short quiz administered and passed, will the identified subjects be allowed to view other sources of media, now knowing the truth of the world.

The Ministry of Correct Information has decreed that it shall be permitted to call Colin Powell, pre-Obama endorsement, a house negro. It has been determined that it is ok to throw oreo cookies at GOP Senate candidates, and that it is ok to call conservative supreme court justices who happen to be black, Uncle Tom.
The Ministry of Correct Information has revoked Bill Clinton’s status as the first Black President and has decided that any black man running for Governor in Pennsylvania can not win if he runs on the wrong ticket. There is just something uppity about that n****r

Hell yeah!!! You’re catching on. We’ve got to stand up to those hypocritical Dems and take back the black-face and “negro” usage, maybe even “nigga”. Let’s really put it out there and SHOW THEM a thing or two!

The song is funny. Heard it a lot before this. It was unfair for a Senator to send CD’S to other Senators and who else. That don’t make Republicans look good. There are a lot of songs about every politician. Was a tad bad taste.

You obviously don’t understand. When we criticize the usage through parody… The parody is the one that inflames the media and the left. Not the original source, or the CONTEXT of such usage.
Some many useful idiots in this world…

LMAO!! You have a great point there. In Santa Barbara, Ca. They still have the first Sambo’s and the name is still the same. Great point it is true.

What’s wrong with Negro and Caucasian? I don’t know anyone who is white or black. Why would a Negro want to use inaccurate and actually pejorative terms to describe themselves?

More honor and dignity from the Family Values party.
And no, nobody is surprised.
