Terrific: 52% of Americans think Caroline’s qualified

Two possibilities. Either contempt for Congress has swelled to the point that voters figure she can’t be worse than the current crop — if we’re willing to stoop to electing Senator Franken, why not Senator Princess? — or George Carlin’s assessment of the public was right all along. Which would be ironic in this case given his politics, as he’d probably have been warmer to the idea of Caroline in the Senate than you or me.
God help us, we actually have a gender gap on this question.
But the poll also indicates there’s a gender gap, with 57 percent of women saying Kennedy is qualified. That number drops to 47 percent among men, with 46 percent of male respondents saying Kennedy is not qualified.
“Men may think of qualifications for public office in terms of work experience, while women may be looking at a candidate’s life experience,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Caroline Kennedy has a personal history that may be compelling to many women, but her resume is not very long, and that may be a mark against her to some men.”
The question isn’t whether life experience matters, it’s why Caroline’s life experience should matter more than any other woman’s (or man’s). Unless the people polled mean to suggest that every Ivy League grad who’s raised a family is qualified for Senate, they’re giving her bonus points based on nothing more than privilege. Look for her team to exploit the identity politics angle going forward, though, with criticism of her lack of experience inevitably demagogued as “sexist” because it faults her for having made her kids a priority over work. It’s already happening: See, e.g., this dopey WaPo op-ed saluting Caroline as Everymom or this U.S. News piece (by a former GOPAC staffer, of all things) insisting that the only qualifications for Senate, really, are to be sentient and civic-minded, in which case knocking Princess amounts to a gender-based double standard. Or something:
Having just been through this over the question of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s candidacy for vice president, we are again faced with the prospect of career partisans attacking a woman who has just entered the arena from outside it—way, way, outside it.
In much the same way that black politicians, at least prior to Obama’s election, were damned with faint praise when cited for their “eloquence,” the overarching focus on “qualifications”—especially as they apply to women seeking elective office—is little more than an attempt to score a few quick, easy points and push them out of the way. It is unseemly, and it is wrong.
If you live in a parallel world where the daughter of a martyred president, niece of two U.S. Senators, and noted chum and endorsee of the current president-elect exists “way, way outside” the political arena, send me directions on how to get there. Ace, meanwhile, picks up the point about Palin and wonders why we’re suddenly being told that life experience matters an awful lot when raising five kids — and, oh yeah, getting elected governor of a state — didn’t seem to count for much on the bottom half of the GOP ticket. He thinks it’s the media’s class prejudice at work, I think it’s more a prejudice against pols who don’t comport themselves as intellectuals (unlike Bush, Caroline automatically qualifies because she’s a liberal, and of course has written books, sort of), but tomato to-mah-to. Either way, expect her to repackage herself as the new icon of working moms, whose appointment will vindicate all the “little people” out there who had to make tough choices between family and career. Exit question for the moms reading: How do you feel about having matched — if not exceeded — Caroline’s accomplishment with far fewer means at your disposal, only to see her rewarded with a Senate seat? Do you feel empowered?

…..and in other news, Barack Obama will be the 44th president of the U.S.
Yeah, yeah, we know a majority of the American electorate is STUPID!
Duh!

Shes a Kennedy. That is automatic qualification.

I have more work experience than Caroline Kennedy and I’m 26!
Illinidiva on December 29, 2008 at 1:52 PM
pretty much. I mean, you could try to apply logic to their idea that Caroline is qualified, while the governor of Alaska isn’t .. but it’s much easier to keep in mind that liberalism is a mental disorder. No need to go into any further investigation. She’s a liberal, so in their minds, she’s qualified. For the same reason that Bush’s workout was bizarre and creepy, while Obama’s is stud worthy.
Looking for a logical explanation to that? Same thing applies there as well. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Was this poll conducted in Minnesota? I can buy it then … otherwise, something’s amiss. Maybe they only polled dead people.

Yes, and they elected an unknown quantity for president, they rank HRC as the most popular woman in America, they don’t know why socialism should be a bad word, they think 47 million Americans can’t get health insurance and they believe one in six American children live in abject poverty.

She sure doesn’t sound like an intellectual when she opens her mouth. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many “you knows” emanate from the mouth of a woman her age.
I think it’s a class thing.
ProfessorMiao on December 29, 2008 at 1:57 PM
b-b-b..but she’s a Kennedy… They’re part of the royal family.
And gag me, seriously, if she starts this “I’m a working mom” garbage… she’s paid off by the family dynasty. She has no real day to day experience.
Skywise on December 29, 2008 at 1:57 PM
This sucks. I’m as progressive as the day is long and I HATE the prospect of another American political dynasty. The gall of this woman to believe that a last name alone is qualification for Senator. Then again, we saw the same thing happen with Bush and Hillary so I guess we can’t complain she thinks she deserves it. Death to DYNASTIES!
DeathToMediaHacks on December 29, 2008 at 2:00 PM
AP, you have a short memory. We just elected a new POTUS to be the leader of what’s left of the free world, whose sum total of work-life experience is law school, community organizer, and two years as an absentee Senator. That should tell you that the public no longer cares about relevant experience. And frankly, given the mess we are in, brought to us by career pols, how much worse could she be?
Take a deep breath. I am sure over half the people in the poll could not tell you what Senate seat she is trying for.
FalseProfit on December 29, 2008 at 2:01 PM
That’s not a compliment to Caroline Kennedy.
It’s dissing the Senate, and quite properly, too.
If Joe Biden, Barbara Boxer, Harry Reid, et. al. are qualified to be Senators, Caroline is probably overqualified. By that standard my donkey would be qualified, except that she isn’t old enough.
Regards,
Ric

Between her YOU KNOWs and Obambi’s HMMMMs and AHHHs, they can surely fill a lot of empty space and time. But since they went to Ivy League schools, those YOU KNOWs and Hmmm AHHHs must been coming from intellects.
These pseudointellects remind me of a joke by Peter Sellers in a movie when he said: THIS ROOM IS FILLED WITH EMPTY PEOPLE. :)

Evidently, 52 % of those polled are clueless. They probably are worse than clueless, whatever that is, because they want to appoint someone clueless to the Senate.

UNREPENTANT CONSERVATIVE CAPITOLIST on December 29, 2008 at 2:04 PM
I hope the NY Governor appoints her. A strong Republican will have a good shot at beating her regardless of her name recognition. And she is no Hilary Clinton. Clinton was at least involved in the political battles of the 1990s putting herself out there, for instance, with the health care legislation. Although the legislation died an ignominious death, it was her legislation. She was also a strong part of the campaign, getting her hands dirty in the process. Caroline is no Hilary.
Exit Question: If Hilary was forced to run against Rudy in 2004, would she have still won? If you think the answer is no, how well do you think Caroline’s name recognition will carry her in 2010 against someone half as good as Rudy. Of course, if the Republicans run another idiot like the last-minute substitution for Rudy (Rick what’shisname), we would never win no matter who is appointed…

Just A Grunt on December 29, 2008 at 2:05 PM
However we may personally view her qualifications as being justified for the job of a US Senator, the Constitution is rather simple in its requirements. She fits those Constitutional qualifications. If the public of her state want to elect her, let ‘em.
Weebork on December 29, 2008 at 2:06 PM
But she knows the real America. In the real America people are, you know, starving, and polar bears are drowning, and evil corporations simply, you know, refuse to pay workers anything but slave wages. And she really cares about the people, because, you know, she said so. And it would make everyone feel better about all the tragedy she’s had to bear spending her entire life being treated like royalty through no merit of her own. Imagine what that can do to your self esteem. You know?

I think George Carlin is right. We get the leadership we deserve. 52 percent of Americans believe whatever drivel some male model wannabe on a TV screen tells them. Small wonder, then, that someone with “brand name” recognition merits public office. For such as these, it’s not unlike buying a pair of shoes, or a certain brand of car.

Sarah Palin’s life experience: disqualifying

If you distribute intelligence on a bell curve and then look at the average American you have to realize that over 50% of the population falls at or below that mark. I know at least 52% is there.
cobrakai99 on December 29, 2008 at 2:11 PM
“She’ll have the same amount of experience in the Senate as, you know … Obama.”
She can set the precedent as the very first telecommuting Senator.
She can occasionally squint at her laptop while munching caviar and sipping champagne.
Just push the “Y” button for “Yea” and the “N” button for “Nay” sweetie, after reading Harry Reid’s E-mail telling you how to vote.
What else is there to being a Democrat Senator, really?
NoDonkey on December 29, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Caroline is entitled to a Senate seat as a matter of birthright, isn’t she?
We certainly need a Princess in the Senate, don’t we?
molonlabe28 on December 29, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Proof that Princess Caroline is well qualified as a deomocratic senator, that is, when compared to her colleagues in congress:
poxoma on December 29, 2008 at 2:13 PM
People are, generally, brain dead zombies. They proved it by electing Obama, who when dropped into the senate by Jones (he had no opponent- Alan Keyes doesn’t count!), told a reporter that he would NOT run for presidency as he thought one needed to be qualified for a job before trying to get it. Two weeks later he decided he was suddenly qualified and began his 2 yr run for the senate, a mere 143 days after he first entered the US Senate.
The public, when hearing that Obama’s spiritual advisor of 20 yrs (the man Obama called the most important in his adult life) was a racist and anti-american, said- “big deal” and ignored the issue.
Is anyone surprised the majority clueless suddenly think a socialite is qualified to be given a senate seat in NY? These are the same dopes who thought that Hilary, despite years of callous scandal (white water, rose law firm, travelgate, white house furniture stealing, lincoln bedroom selling, etc) was qualified for the same senate seat.
People are stupid. There’s little denying that obvious fact.

Other than the qualifications set forth in our constitution, exactly what are the qualifications required to be US Senator?
What do our current group of Senators have in common?

2. Many are morons
Update the my list as you see fit. Later we can compare it to her resume and see if she is qualified…/sarc off

Yeah, I realized that after I had posted the above. It’s a minor error, but the overall reasoning still stands. She’s qualified according to the Constitution. We may not like it and spend the next several weeks bitching and moaning over it, but what else is there to do before Barack gets elected? :)
Weebork on December 29, 2008 at 2:19 PM

As I see it, one has to have enough money to get elected to the Senate, and that’s about all. She certainly has enough money (and can raise scads more). How are Biden, et al, more qualified than she is? I don’t particularly want her in the Senate, but if Nadler and Cuomo are the other options, let’s go with Caroline.

Grunt,
I realized I made the “election” error after I submitted the comment. However, the underpinning point still stands whether she’s elected or selected. She only has to be a citizen and a certain age to meet muster. We may not like it and there will be a lot of bitching and moaning, but it’s not like there is anything else to do until Pres-elect Obama is inaugurated. :)

They have, not in those terms of course, but with Biden wanting his seat held for his son as well as the same thing happening (I believe) in either Arizona or New Mexico, and topped off with King Majesty Baracky, it’s all there.
Bishop on December 29, 2008 at 2:23 PM
Very true. Reason and logic need not apply to a liberal.
A majority of Americans tend liberal, but half of that majority do so out of fashion and ignorance. It is fashionable to say Caroline is qualified because people, for wahetever reason, certainly don’t want to look bad in the eyes of a liberal. This is also why half the Global Warming believers believe it.

I’ve probably said the same thing, but I think they are, in fact, unbearably slow, and unable to learn much without direct experience. So when the libs bring downfall, the populace will turn against them, but not beforehand. In other words, they need to be smacked in the head with a two-by-four, before they know that swinging a two-by-four can be dangerous.
Alternately, one might suggest that universal suffrage just doesn’t work, and never will, because no errors get avoided before they have a chance to wreak havoc. Barack Obama comes immediately to mind.

And on and on until one of her kids is old enough to take the reins.

We are not, and should not be a monarchy. No more: Clintons, Bushs, Kennedys, Obamas, nor any of the big names. It’s definitely not what the founding fathers had in mind. Same with the interminable ’service’ of congressmen and senators. Serve for a time and please just go home and do something worthwhile. They don’t know how to age with grace and when to leave, even if they’re in diapers already.

I honestly don’t understand. The Constitution has the only qualifications I’ve ever heard of.
OK, so is she qualified, according to the Constitution? Yes. She is at least thirty, and has been a citizen all her life. So she is strictly speaking, qualified.
Now, the question is will she do a good job? Could she do worse than the “qualified experts” we’ve been sending for generations?
First, let’s do this logically shall we? Is New York’s Democratic Governor going to appoint a Republican? No. So a Democrat is the given here right? When the Senator is Appointed, obviously they want a seat that is going to stay Democratic. Right? In other words, they want a Senator who can win re-election against a Republican Challenger. She can be on name recognition alone.
Yeah. She’s qualified, and she’s a good choice for the style over substance Democrats, and frankly, half the Republicans to support.
Snake307 on December 29, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Then 52% of Americans must either not know what 1776 was about or just “assume” that she must have a lot more in the way of qualification than she has or she would not be the leading candidate for NY Senator. It would be “interesting” to see a breakdown on that as an estimated 33% of Americans were royalists pre 1776 and I really doubt that has increased to 52%.

I figured the ~52% of people who thought Obama was qualified to be President would think any Kennedy would be suitable for a Senate seat.
But I’m going to be fair here. Considering the other leading lights in the Senate, I don’t see what most of them have in terms of qualifications as opposed to her. Yes, they’ve run for office at least once, but that’s not exactly heavy lifting. If John Kerry, a man who isn’t known for his attendance record or any kind of legislative accomplishment, is qualified then by all means Caroline Kennedy is qualified. Makes sense to me.

Considering that congress has an approval rating in the single digits most of the time, it’s probably not a compliment that people think she’s qualified.
Honestly, if the only goal is to keep the current level of incompetence going, I think a monkey trained to randomly hit “Yes”, “No” & “Present” could do at least as good as the current crop of congressmen.

Of course to believe that Carlin was right in what he said means to actually understand what he meant and part of it reminds me of this quote from an old biblical scholar:

You have GOT to be kidding me! 52% of the electorate actually believes this inarticulate air head is qualified for the Senate? This is obviously a mistake. I’m sure the numbers got reversed by some idiot, dyslexic, liberal pollster and it’s really only a 25% approval rating…and everyone polled lives in Franken country…where stupidity is the norm.
