Its very simple: The left loves the dirt we stand on and the right loves the culture we live in.

allrsn, I think you are close. Except that they love the dirt and hate the culture.

Yes, America is flawed as is any country governed by imperfect men. Sadly, our beloved Constitution is under attack, our freedoms under siege. As we become more democratic the country we love is slowly dieing. As stated in many of the above posts, democracy is the road to ruin. Our republic depends on an informed electorate, sadly far to many of our citizens are ignorant. Our education system, or rather our state mandated indoctrination system, is deeply planting the seeds of our own destruction. How is it that a man like Ayers is a tenured professor? One small indication of exactly how the country we love is dieing a long, slow and painful death.

Multiculturalism is yet another knife into the heart of the America we conservatives love. Teaching our children that other cultures are as good (or better) than ours, plants more seeds of our eventual collapse.

Thankfully we still have the 2nd Amendment (until our dear leader attempts to erase it), hopefully we won't need to use it to forcefully overthrow a future government that seeks to undermine our most basic rights. Yes, even conservatives can see that dissent against the government is not treason.

Certainly there are things that our nation has done in the distant and not so distant past that are horrific, slavery, the treatment of our indigenous population, the horrid treatment of our citizens under Jim Crow.

However, our force for good outweighs our sins. Our fight against Hitler, our struggle against the Soviet Union, our aid to needy countries are among of the many ways America has made the world a better place.

How sad that the party that gave use Truman and JFK also gives us Reid, Rangel, the wicked witch of the west, Murtha, Obama etc etc

Although Stein is a moron, his article does expose a tiny nugget of truth. Coming to terms with the fundamental differences between the right and the left requires honest assessments.

I move all Joel Stein links be banned. A Hot Air post automatically multiplies his traffic by 10. It's improper and unhealthy, like stopping to stare at an accident.

His opinions are inconsequential. His columns read like those VH1 put down shows; a string of snide, unfunny insults. He's doesn't think; he poses. He probably watches himself in a mirror as he writes.

The problem is the libs definition of what "America" is. When challenged they give examples of all of these heinous things the American government has supposedly done over time. This is ironic because it is they who worship government as long as they are running it.

I see America in broader terms, our people, founding principals, are amazing Constitution, our economy, liberty, strong military, the force for GOOD we have been on balance, the good morals of MOST of us, our "can do" attitude, strong work ethic, etc... What's not to love? Especially as compared to other nations.

Leftists love no one but themselves. It's impossible to love anything when you can't see past their own narcissistic noses. I find these to be even more evident on either coast where elitist muttonheads call anything between the Appalachians and the Sierras, "FLYOVER COUNTRY".

Until after WWI and to a certain extent until after WWII, England France Germany and Europe in general were the world super powers from way back (hence the holier than thou attitude) and their much older society was tailor made for socialist take over even when Kings were in charge.

England, France, Germany and Europe in general were never socialist until they came under the influence and control of Woodrow Wilson, the twentieth century's most influential progressive bar Lenin.

Thomas Paine like a number of new Americans didn’t want European communal ideology to take root here in fact they wanted as much separation as possible.

Thomas Paine was no more American than he was French. He was an Englishman who greatly influenced the American and French revolutions with his radical Enlightenment philosophy.

“Foreign influence is truly the Grecian horse to a republic. We cannot be too careful to exclude its influence.” -Alexander Hamilton, 1793

Considering that Alexander Hamilton was born a British citizen I'm guessing he didn't regard Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights and the Habeas Corpus Act as "foreign influences" to be discarded.

The Declaration of Independence make a key reference to what Thomas Jefferson described as the tragically broken bond of consanguinity between the Americans and the British.

Yet Jefferson was a great admirer of The Aeneid which might well be considered a foreign influence by modern standards.

To my post above I should have added that I am privileged to own my own land

That's not true if you pay "property taxes". Then you have to pay rent to the government. Granted its cheaper than rent to most other landlords, but until people get around these little tricks of language that the tax collectors use we will never truly have private property in this country.

There is hope for Stein, if he is brave enough to take the next step. He has made the hardest part of the journey, acknowledging a failing. Does he have the courage to recognize it as such? Does he have what it takes to honestly look in the mirror and say that something is wrong with this picture, that perhaps part of this hatred in America is a self-hatred as well? Will he look at conservatives and be able to understand that their passionate love for their country is not because they are unable to critize America (far from it!) but because we have spent our lifetimes evaluating our feelings for America, just like any love you have is constantly reevaluated and found it is a profoundly noble country, worthy of respect of its citizens, warts and all?

I don't know. If he was able to do that, he would be a conservative.

and a certain set of moderate men, who think better of the European world than it deserves

Think again, Europe is still mired in that same holier than thou mindset and always this last half millennia socialist bound and isn’t near to give it up.

Help me out a little. Half a milenna you say. Is that a reference to the Reformation? Are you saying "that same holier than thou mindset" an unbroken line from the Catholic Church to contemporary European liberals or what?

Help me out a little. Half a milenna you say. Is that a reference to the Reformation? Are you saying “that same holier than thou mindset” an unbroken line from the Catholic Church to contemporary European liberals or what?

To my post above I should have added that I am privileged to own my own land (16+ Ac) and house that are paid for now, and owe nothing major to anyone. I still owe taxes, and pay for utilities, but even our cars are ours. This was my goal in the good years.

I also feel that my time in the service made me grow up. If Stein were to really "love" his country, he would do a stint in the service. He could do media for 4 years or so and get his rough edges knocked off and see how the other people in the world live. I bet that he has never been rained on, much less shot at. Funny how your outlook on life changes.

Maybe some day Stein can take a look at the major issues that liberals have tried to defend with their brand of "patriotism", in their words, like the national security leaks they love to watch flood out in the public domain through the New York Slimes, or WaPo. As he has now admitted to the utter disingenuousness of the liberals' cry of "I love my country," it would be interesting to see what he could make of these other issues, given that the fake patriotism has been the core of the liberals' arguments.

I no longer engage in 'dialog' with people such as Stein. It's a waste of my time. Being in the US gives him the opportunity to spout his progressive bullshit because it makes him feel better. It also allows me to tell him that, in my opinion, he's a stupid shit who couldn't find his ass in a dark room even with the help of a map and a flashlight.

No they didn’t. Are you stupid?

That's a strong and well thought out argument you put forth there. Perhaps he is not merely stupid but is a stupid face as well.

Though I would carefully avoid giving unnecessary offence, yet I am inclined to believe, that all those who espouse the doctrine of reconciliation, may be included within the following descriptions:
Interested men, who are not to be trusted; weak men who cannot see; prejudiced men who will not see; and a certain set of moderate men, who think better of the European world than it deserves; and this last class by an ill-judged deliberation, will be the cause of more calamities to this continent than all the other three. Thomas Paine

The context here is all wrong. There is no way that Paine was complaining that Europe in the 18th century was too liberal. Quite the contrary. He was interested in the success of the American and French revolutions along radical Enlightenment lines.

Do Muslims love America in the right way?

I'm OK. You're OK. My OK is just a little better. God bless America.

Despite Hannity's uber-annoying din, he had it right. America is number one. I don't know if that's because of God's good grace, destiny or luck. But it's the truth. We are the nation other nations emulate, steal from or hate upon because they want to be just like us.
