Merry Christmas!

posted at 7:00 am on December 25, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,  “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

– Luke 2:9-14

I’d like to wish all of the Hot Air community a Merry Christmas. Last night, the First Mate and I watched The Nativity Story to get into the spirit of Christmas, after attending evening Mass. This is one of the best moments in the movie. I highly recommend making it part of your holiday tradition.

Or, maybe you’d prefer something more secular?

Classic. This is another Christmas tradition in our family.

Either way you celebrate the holidays, may they be filled with joy and love.

Merry Christmas Ed!!

Tim Zank on December 25, 2008 at 7:16 AM

Sorry, I can’t participate in the Christmas joy this year, knowing that we have a Fascist/Socialist about to ascend to the Presidency of the United States.

It’s a sad day indeed for this once great Nation of ours.

We should all turn this day into a great mourning for our country. Remind all your family members that dark days are indeed ahead under the Obama administration. Tell them to prepare for the coming battles, and to fight back against the Democrats Stalinist policies.

Sarah Palin and the Republican Party are the only things standing between us and a complete loss of our freedoms, similar to Nazi Germany in the 1930s, and Stalin’s Russia from the late 1920s to early 50s, under Democrat rule.

We must fight back with all our might.

ericdondero on December 25, 2008 at 7:35 AM

One of my presents is Ed Morrissey’s selection, analysis, and his reader’s discussions on current events. I will appreciate more of the same in 2009.
It’d be a much bumpier ride without the Captain and the non-troll Hot Air community.

Merry Christmas and our very best to you and your family, Ed.

May peace surround you as the warmest of cloaks.
May health and joy lighten your way.
May your faith hold strong as the might oaks,
This Christmas and all your remaining days.

I usually don’t lecture people, particularly on Christmas morn, but here goes. There are times when you have to lighten your heart and separate yourself from the darkness that can surround us. If for no other reason than to recharge your batteries for the fight. This day would be one of those times. My USMC son is away from home for the third time in five years, two of those times were spent in Falujah. His good spirits and optimism for the future carried me through. America will not rise or fall because one man becomes POTUS.

JonRoss on December 25, 2008 at 8:04 AM

I was caught off guard by the “non-partcipator”.. With all due respect on this Christmas day, to allow politicians to control, dampen, or ruin your Christmas, is giving these guys WAY to much power & credit. Forget that stuff…it will be there Monday.

God Bless & Merry Christmas…

Ramahanukwanzmas Ramadan will not occur during Christams until at least 2017 or 2018.

Because Islam is still based on a lunar calendar, Islamic thingys change form year to year. So it’s Hanukwanzmas.

A merry Christmas from Afghanistan. May the joy that burst forth from the heavens at His advent be in all of hearts this day.

On that day there were some shepherds keeping watching over their flocks by night. Suddenly an Angel of the Lord was in their midst, and the Glory of God shone all about him, and they were sore afraid. But the angel said to them, “Fear not; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
“This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest, Peace on Earth, and Goodwill to all men.”

Sounds like you will be fine. One of my sons most memorable Christmas memories was being barricaded in a burned out building in Falujah doing guard duty on the roof with a handful of his buddies. He would rather have been home, but the shared experience with his USMC buddies seemed to have whipped his priorities in a different and positive direction.

JonRoss on December 25, 2008 at 12:01 PM

In about ninety minutes here on the Coast, my little flock will gather together and sing. No man, no force, no power upon the earth may rob us of the joy now given.

“From Heaven Above to Earth I Come”
by Martin Luther, 1483-1546

1. “From heaven above to earth I come
To bear good news to every home;
Glad tidings of great joy I bring,
Whereof I now will say and sing:

2. “To you this night is born a child
Of Mary, chosen virgin mild;
This little child, of lowly birth,
Shall be the joy of all the earth.

3. “This is the Christ, our God and Lord,
Who in all need shall aid afford;
He will Himself your Savior be
From all your sins to set you free.

4. “He will on you the gifts bestow
Prepared by God for all below,
That in His kingdom, bright and fair,
You may with us His glory share.

5. “These are the tokens ye shall mark:
The swaddling-clothes and manger dark;
There ye shall find the Infant laid
By whom the heavens and earth were made.”

6. Now let us all with gladsome cheer
Go with the shepherds and draw near
To see the precious gift of God,
Who hath His own dear Son bestowed.

7. Give heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes!
What is it in yon manger lies?
Who is this child, so young and fair?
The blessed Christ-child lieth there.
8. Welcome to earth, Thou noble Guest,
Through whom the sinful world is blest!
Thou com’st to share my misery;
What thanks shall I return to Thee?

9. Ah, Lord, who hast created all,
How weak art Thou, how poor and small,
That Thou dost choose Thine infant bed
Where humble cattle lately fed!

10. Were earth a thousand times as fair,
Beset with gold and jewels rare,
It yet were far too poor to be
A narrow cradle, Lord, for Thee.

11. For velvets soft and silken stuff
Thou hast but hay and straw so rough,
Whereon Thou, King, so rich and great,
As ’twere Thy heaven, art throned in state.

12. And thus, dear Lord, it pleaseth Thee
To make this truth quite plain to me,
That all the world’s wealth, honor, might,
Are naught and worthless in Thy sight.

13. Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child,
Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for Thee.

14. My heart for very joy doth leap,
My lips no more can silence keep;
I, too, must sing with joyful tongue
That sweetest ancient cradle-song:

15. Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto us His Son hath given!
While angels sing with pious mirth
A glad new year to all the earth.

Here’s a special Tip of the Black Hat to all the commenters of HotAir.com, with the wish for a most Blessed Christmas, and a prosperous New Year, despite everything. We’ll have plenty to talk about in the coming year, to say the least, and I look forward to more amusing and illuminating insights in this forum.

I want to thank Ed and Allahpundit, for the opportunity to participate in this forum. I especially want to thank The Divine Mrs M herself, for providing this unique setting for exchanging views (and occasional snarks) on the great issues of our day, and I hope she has a memorable time with her family on this blessed day. May she continue to fight the good fight, telling us all what we need to hear, in the interest of serving the Truth. Mabuhay!!!

Also, I wanna give a special shout to all those guys in uniform in places far away, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Let’s be careful wherever you are, and get back here soon. The place isn’t the same without you.

God bless America. Merry Christmas to all. HOO-rah.
