What Christmas carols could you do without?

In this joyous time of year, when Christmas carols ringing from every speaker and cell phone in every retail shop, few of us would voice complaints about the incessantly repeated songs that find our laaaaast nerve … and stomp all over it. Don’t get me wrong — I love Christmas carols, but not every one is a gem, and the worst seem to get the most airplay. I’d be thrilled if I didn’t get to hear the following songs for, well, the rest of my life:

  • Santa Baby (Madonna version): I love the Eartha Kitt original.  It’s a cute and satirical look at the most utilitarian look at Christmas.  Madonna’s version makes my skin crawl.  It replaces cute and kittenish with screechiness and about as much subtlety as one would see on the streets of Las Vegas.
  • Happy Christmas (War Is Over), aka And So This Is Christmas: Without the War Is Over chorus, it’s a weakly-written poetic attempt at a Hallmark card level.  When it veers into War Is Over If You Want It and talk about “the yellow and red ones” [correction provided by the Llama Butchers], it becomes a preachy political chant, and a mindlessly naive one at that, no surprise from John Lennon, who “Imagine”d an end to religion.  War isn’t over just because we want it, as 9/11 proved.  Sorry, but there are people in the world that want to kill other people, and believing that all we need to do is wish war away is stupid beyond belief.
  • Last Christmas: Wham?  This breathy jilted-love ballad hardly fits the Christmas spirit, and its upbeat pace makes it a terrible ballad even without Christmas.  The enduring life of this dance-hall downer is absolutely inexplicable.
  • Wonderful Christmastime (had it originally as “Simply Christmastime”): I’ll spread the love, such as it is, to another Beatle.  Paul McCartney’s dully repetitive paen to secular celebration isn’t terrible on the first listen, but by the time you’ve heard it three or four times, you’ll wish it was simply New Year’s Day.
  • Christmas Bride – Ray Coniff produced a slew of Christmas classics, so he’s allowed a clunker — and this was it.  I’ve only heard it once, and that was enough to send the FM and me into gales of laughter.  Someone should get that couple into communications counseling.

I’m more a fan of classics, but I did find one relatively new version of a traditional carol that I really enjoyed.  Barenaked Ladies teamed with Sarah McLachlan on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and gave it a folk-rock treatment that actually works very well.  Have a listen:

What carols can you do without, and which are absolute essentials?

Update: A couple of corrections, as noted above.  Comments thread is great — be sure to read them all.

I can do without the dogs barking Jingle Bells.

Must have Carol of the Bells, in any form (choir, techno, or even actual bells).

I know which one I can’t live without…the dogs barking jingle bells…

Verbal Abuse on December 24, 2008 at 11:06 AM

I have tons of classic Christmas faves, almost all by the chorales of the ’60’s. But this year I’ve discovered a song that’s probably been around for years: “Mary Did You Know,” by Kathy Mattea. It’ll stay near the top of my list of favorites from now on.

sondiehl on December 24, 2008 at 11:09 AM

My operating principle is: if it was written after about 1970, I can do without it.

Vashta.Nerada on December 24, 2008 at 11:09 AM

The Brits are clueless when it comes to Christmas songs.

You can add John Lennon’s, “And So This Is Christmas” to the list. Both he, and McCartney’s are two classic examples of someone writing a Christmas song who has absolutely no idea what Christmas represents.

They are souless paeans to secular “let’s be nice, children.”

Drunk Report on December 24, 2008 at 11:11 AM

I have to say that the song “Last Christmas” I heard for the first time four years ago in South Korea. I had nothing to watch in early December, so I watched a music video show and heard the song in Korean by a local singer. I thought it was a nice song. Little did I know it was a Wham song.

I love anything by Bing Crosby, but I guess I can’t stand “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” by Ive. I find it annoying.

I see your point, but there are three modern ones I really like:

1. “There’s a New Kid in Town,” especially Keith Whitley’s version,

2. Alan Jackson’s “Let it be Christmas,”

3. Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas.”

One song I have never liked, and I don’t know why, is The Christmas Shoes.

Others that should be banned from the airwaves include Last Christmas, Step into Christmas, The Barking Dogs, The Chipmonks Christmas Song.

I came across this new one, “Silent Night” by Sixpence None the Richer, and it’s very nice.

Here in SF Bay Area, we have two ‘adult light rock’ stations that go to an all Christmas music format after Thanksgiving. It is great.

The problem is that horrible, awful, ugly Wham song. (and a couple of cover versions – w.t.eff? Both stations have it in the rotation. It’s the only song that makes me change the station immediately. The McCartney song is tolerable only because I can see the horribly cheesy music video for it in my mind and that makes it funny.

What they don’t play but should is a wonderful Andrea Bocelli version of Adeste Fideles. I love that in the Latin, and he sings it beautifully. I’d settle for the old Bing Crosby version which is part Latin, part English. Alas, neither is on the radio.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” should be used to torture prisoners at Guantanamo.

Ugh…I hate that scum queen Madonna, so any Christmas song done by that moronic bimbo is off my list! Give me the Eartha Kitt original any day!

Also, with how Madonna bashes the Christian religion (putting herself on a cross in her concerts, etc) why on earth would she do Christams songs? I’ll tell you why, she’s a damn greedy hypocrite! She’ll bash Christianity all year long, but when it comes to making an extra buck she has no problem doing Christmas songs…hypocrisy, thy name is Maddonna!

Liberty or Death on December 24, 2008 at 11:18 AM

I tire of vocal Christmas music pretty quickly. I can listen to instrumentals all day.

Bruce Springsteen’s version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” I like Springsteen, but that song gets old real fast.

Every single one of them. The radio stations start playing them incessantly right after Thanksgiving. Can’t take it anymore.

KSgop on December 24, 2008 at 11:19 AM

I prefer the traditional music also, as well as religious stalwarts…

IMHO, you can lose most of the rockin’ Christmas tunes; especially thise done since 1992 by the likes of Bono, Sting, weenies et al…

A agree with BadgerHawk on Bing; and like most of the famous crooners takes on the old favorites…

To the Hot Air crew, and all their readers, I wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, or whatever appelation you are celebrating at this time!

Many Happy Returns!

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”. (JKMN)

The Jackson 5 version of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town”.

Favorites:

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas” (my current favorite version is Brian McKnight’s); “O Holy Night”, “Angels We Have Heard On High”, “Now Behold the Lamb” (Kirk Franklin), “River” (the James Taylor version).

Best Christmas album for driving around, checking out the Christmas lights: “A Festival of Carols in Brass”, Philadelphia Brass Ensemble.

Carol of the Bells is amazing.

I hate all the rest.

monkeywrench on December 24, 2008 at 11:25 AM

“Last Christmas” requires a tank car full of brain bleach and a thorough ear reaming. There’s a version of “Santa Baby” with a Betty Boop feel that’s kind of cute, but I don’t know who does it because my local station turned off their RDS (radio data system, provides title and artist information) over the summer. “Holly Jolly Christmas” needs to be on the steamroller pile. Gets me all upsot.

It’s a tie between Barbra Streisand’s version of Jingle Bells, and “I’m getting Santa a Pikachu for Christmas.” I’m sure none of you have heard that second song, but I have, repeatedly because of a Pokemon obsessed little brother when we were growing up. Every now and then he likes to sneak it on the CD player when we’re all together for the holidays as a joke, and every year I hide the CD again.

I would have to say, I can do without 99% of all remakes and new songs of the last 30 years.

Just give me Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and the original singers of certain songs like Jingle Bell Rock (I’m drawing a blank).

Bing Crosby is the undisputed king, hands down.

I’ll even take some Elvis, he did the best Blue Christmas.

The Live Aid song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

The short answer is “No”, they don’t know it’s Christmas.

“Here’s to you,
Raise a glass for everyone
Here’s to them
UNDERNEATH THE BURNING SUN”

Screw you, Geldof. I liked your early work with Boomtown Rats and even your acting gig in The Wall. However, you could have found a better rhyme than that.

Good: Do They Know It’s Christmas (sorry, I like it)
Twelve Days of Christmas by Bob and Doug
It’s Christmas Baby Please Come Home-U2

Bad: too many to mention, but the Lennon song Ed mentioned is the absolute worst. It makes me want to commit violence, preferably against a pacifist (which I guess isn’t all bad…).

To show you how old I am, I like Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer sung by Gene Autry. Another oldie I like is Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

I especially like the religious ones, when they are sung by artists who know what they are singing about.

cjs1943 on December 24, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Ah yes, Happy Christmas (War is Over) does drive you insane after the mind-numbing fifth round of chorus. It would be better titled as “This is the Song that Doesn’t End.”

Jingle Bells is a pretty dull tune. I found the Dogs Barking it to be an amusing aside. Wouldn’t want to hear it more than once, though. Same with the 12 Pains of Christmas; “You’re so smart, you hang up the lights!”

The best:

Mannheim Steamroller. Game Over.

Otherwise I like the legit Christmas Carols. As in, the one’s that reference Jesus Christ. Your standard canon: Hark The Herald Angel’s Sing, Angels We Have Heard On High, The First Noel, etc.

There was also a new one about Mary that I only heard once, but was overwhelmed by. “A Baby Changes Everything,” I think it was.

I can do without Burl Ives’s “Holly Jolly Christmas,” any form of “Feliz Navidad,” and dogs or chipmunks destroying seasonal songs.

“A child, a child shivers in the cold,” drives me up a wall. It’s Christmas night, the stores aren’t open, so silver and gold are useless. Bring him some firewood, a blanket, a space heater… something!

And if I hear pa rum pa pum pum one more time I’m going to take those drumsticks and beat the drummer boy’s head in with them.

Bah humbug! “I need a silent night” is my theme song this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRSSsNbF29I

I got to have my annual dose of The Partridge Family Christmas album! (Wish I was joking.)

Also, Aaron Neville’s Christmas Album is great.

Plus, Manheim Steamroller is the best background music for Christmas parties.

Also like the Porky Pig verion of Blue Christmas.

And the hard rock, no vocals Christmas song by Sabatage.

Tony737 on December 24, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Wait a minute!! There are people who DON’T like “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer?” I’m shocked. It’s funnier ‘n a screen door on a submarine.

Oh, and did someone say “Kelly Pickler?” Naive but HOT!!! Just the way I like ‘em. LOL.

I also can’t stand cheesy electronic musical Christmas decorations.
deewhybee on December 24, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Heh, the neighbor behind me decorated his house with those, they’ve been turning them on every night since Thanksgiving and it doesn’t turn off until about 11 pm. It’s a good thing I can’t hear it when I’m in my house or I’d have to go all Scrooge on them..hehe.

I feel really sorry for my neighbors next to me, their backyard faces directly toward this neighbor with the annoying musical lights/ornaments. We live in AZ so it’s still nice enough to sit outside, but we’ve had to listen to those crappy electronic Christmas Carols eminating from our neighbors display for a month now whenever we’re in the backyard…I love the Christmas season I really do, but to have to listen to that constantly…I really think I may go mad….!

Any song by the Muppetts. Gag.

Off to shop for Christmas Dinner. Just wanted to tell all of you guys and gals:

MERRY CHRISTMAS! AND HAPPY HANUKKAH! Probably didn’t spell that right :)

Bing + Christmas songs = Awesome.

BadgerHawk on December 24, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Yep, you are so right. Bing was always being played in the stores when my folks took me shopping during the Christmas season in the 50’s. Good times…good times.

Anybody seen that anti-semite Y-Not around here lately?

Jarhead68 on December 24, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Wow…I’m glad I’m not alone with “O Holy Night” as a favorite…

Whomever sings it tho, has to hit that high note in the second chorus, which isn’t easy, or the song just isn’t the same.

JetBoy on December 24, 2008 at 11:34 AM

+1. And when the singer hits the high note, it puts a lump in my throat every time.

txsurveyor on December 24, 2008 at 12:05 PM

I thought “Christmas Shoes” was the most shamelessly manipulative Christmas song ever. Then I heard that song about the Christmas orphan.

On the other hand, I never get tired of “Santa Got Run Over By A Reindeer” and “Christmas Rapping.” Go figure.

Favorite? “Carol of the Bells,” sung by a choir.

Yeah, that one does suck, but the chipmunks are worse. Every time I hear those things I just want to pour bleach in my ears.

Favorite? “Carol of the Bells,” sung by a choir.

Meryl Yourish on December 24, 2008 at 12:06 PM

That also happens to be the hardest to find. There are several orchestrals of it, notably Mannheim Steamroller’s, but I’ve only heard one choral version.
