Now they tell us: GOP pols, pollsters grumbling about McCain’s misuse of Palin

For the second time this week, I’m forced to begin a post about McCain with that line from “The Wedding Singer”: This information really would’ve been more useful to us yesterday.

The occasion is this passage from Sarahcuda’s “conservative of the year” interview with Human Events:

Now I have all the faith in the world in Sen. McCain and his family. But some of the folks around him I did not know, and so it was a kind of a risky thing for me to put my faith in the decisions they were making on my behalf.

As an administrator, as a chief executive of a state, I am not used to that. I am used to proving my abilities by calling the shots. Then I know the buck stops with me. I made the decisions, and I’m responsible. When others are making decisions for me, as they were in the campaign, and I am the one to live with the fallout from the decisions that were made on my behalf, that is something I am not very comfortable with…

But my reliance on seeking God’s direction in all that I do — that is good enough for me. And others who have a different worldview and different strategy on messaging and such, I would like to have the opportunity to prove to them that my gut instincts were going to be quite adequate.

And right on cue, via U.S. News & World Report, the pile-on begins:

Now I’m hearing from key Republicans on Capitol Hill and GOP pollsters who believe that the McCain campaign should have put her out to talk about energy and political independence—her two best issues—instead of making her the conservative attack dog.

Said one pollster: “The McCain campaign took this person and completely botched her assets.” What’s more, the pollster said that in Palin, the McCain campaign had an expert on one of the key issues that was on the minds of Americans: energy prices. “They should have used her knowledge and focus on her expertise.” And the pollster said on background that the campaign should have played up her reputation as a political maverick.

They did emphasize the maverick stuff — it became an element of Fey’s character on SNL — but between her having to play the bad guy by beating up Obama and being painted by the media as a religious nut, it ended up submerged in a narrative of Palin as rabid party apparatchik. As for energy, she talked about that too (most memorably at the debate with “drill, baby, drill”) but I agree that it was never as prominent as it should have been. I remember writing the day she was picked that oil would be “her issue” on the trail and then the next day that she’d be the point man on energy policy. It never really felt that way. Palinmania was about biography and charisma; maybe it would have been different if they had her giving speeches on oil right out of the chute to impress the public with her experience, but between the Couric interview and the fact that energy had faded as a key issue by the time the financial crisis hit (if not earlier), I doubt it would have made a difference in the election — although it might have made a difference in her credibility with independents now.

Exit question: Why the anonymous sources on this one? If you’re going to dump on McCain and praise the party’s new star, you might as well get full credit.

The 6 collages.

She made six collages?? Coollll!!!1!!1!!

Now, go lie back down on the sofa…you’ve had a little too much Nyquil.

hoosiermama on December 23, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Palin was the only thing that kept this election close. Otherwise McCain might have carried 3 or 4 states. If she had been on the ticket with Thompson or Romney they would have won big time. The MSM did their thing and managed to get McCain the nomination knowing that he couldn’t win and she almost turned it around anyway. “Hope and Change” would not have had a chance against another other ticket. Now we pay the penalty for the next four years (at least). All I can say is “God help up”.

You are easily scared! Might I suggest you simply crawl under your desk, insert your thumb into your mouth and suck? As for us conservatives, we shall move forward un-”scared” and un-bending to scared little RINO moderates who wish to just get along with really scary people out there… Have you checked with your mommy lately about what she’s doing to make sure you don’t have to be scared? Poor baby!

sabbott on December 23, 2008 at 5:50 PM

duff, wrong

Polls show Palin caused McCain to lose votes.

Without Palin McCain polled much better.

Palin turned off the middle and even conservatives who viewed her a ditz.

Duff without Palin McCain would have easily won florida. Before Palin McCain was leading in all the polls.

Palin destroyed McCain in Florida.

Palin also hurt McCain badly with Hillary supporters and in suburbs and urban areas.

McCain would have won Virginia without Palin. Palin hurt McCain badly in northern virginia.

Duff Palin was a double body blow because she took independent votes away from McCain to Obama.

Duff Palin is an electoral disaster without Palin McCain would have done much better.

Rush Limbaugh is another disaster he caused Talent to lose his senate seat with the michael j fox rant.

Limbaugh’s rant on colin powell as bad as Powell’s actions were turned off moderate voters.

The Limbaugh/Palin combo of the party can’t get 51 percent. Moderates don’t like them.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Did you see Palin say the bailout would help out healthcare.

She is lost.

She also has a huge temper. Did you see her e-mails. She had temper tantrums throughout the campaign.

Did you see her doodles.

The 6 collages. The pregnant daughter and future mother in law druggy.

Palin thought dinosaurs were around with humans.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 4:28 PM

I’m guessing San Fransisco for some reason… Possibly the use of the word “druggy” would lead to that assumption. I’m thinking Nancing…lots and lots of Nancing!

sabbott on December 23, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Duffs, yeah Palin who turned off all those suburban women really helped McCain.

10 percent of voters said Palin was qualified for president.

To say she helped McCain is a lie and you know it.

She gave Obama the presidency. She was the worst campaign mistake in the history of presidential elections.

Percy_Peabody on December 23, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Good thought and probably accurate.

duff65 on December 23, 2008 at 6:02 PM

McCain in mid august was his strongest when Obama was at 41 percent in reuters poll.

Palin became the issue not Obama which was another terrible effect of McCain picking her.

Polls taken showed McCain would have done much better had he not picked Palin.

19 percent of voters said Palin made them more likely to support McCain while 31 percent said less likely.

With Palin McCain lost 53-46 in a CNN poll and without Palin 52-48.

Palin prepared to be VP was 35 percent yes while 59 percent no.

Palin prepared to be president was 10 percent yes.

She was a disaster in every possible aspect. Her supporters were the huckabee supporters. McCain was going to win the deep south anyway. Palin destroyed McCain in suburban and urban areas which make up 81 percent of the electorate. Palin destroyed McCain with moderates.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 5:16 PM

Firstly, I may be mistaken, but I don’t think McCain ever led Obama in the polls until he chose Palin.

Secondly, I’m not surprised that at election time so many people had a negative view of her. When one is the subject of an intensive slime job; when a person is defined not by herself but by assorted media pro-Obama hacks, wankers and mediocrities, it can affect perception to say the least.

ddrintn on December 23, 2008 at 6:02 PM

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Why would issues matter if the other candidate is a marxist? Seems like Palin would be the only choice..which is kinda what they tried to do to us with McCain. They ran a bum candidate because they thought the alternative was so bad, we would have nowhere else to go. Look how that turned out. And spare me the McCain was destroyed by Palin meme; his campaign was going nowhere fast until he brought her on board. She prevented a wipeout. As to Palin, I think with time, she’ll be fine. You have some serious bias against her which I doubt time or medication will be able to do much with.

As to whizzman, and his historical revisionism, no one has to make up anything with regards to McCain. It’s all in his voting record, and things he’s said. People who follow certain issues hated him with good reason. And whizzman, to question a logical fallacy, if McCain was elected by a majority of Republicans who just had to have a backstabbing geriatric jerkweed as a candidate, why would a few dissenters be able to bring down his juggernaut of a campaign? Seems to me if we were so effective in bringing him down, how did he ever win the primary in the first place? Taking the preexisting issues out, McCain was a horrible choice for candidate. Old, arrogant and uninspiring. Obama isn’t social moron John Kerry, or escaped mental patient Al Gore; Obama has charisma. McCain looked like the real candidates father with nothing much interesting to say. Sorry whizzman, but your dream wasn’t killed. It was suicide. McCain never had a chance. Your refusal to acknowledge that has dropped you into truther territory; as I’ve advised you before, you need to find a new hobby. You’re pants at politics.

austinnelly on December 23, 2008 at 6:03 PM

McCain was winning in mid august before Palin.

Obama had 28 percent of the independent vote and won 60 percent.

McCain is only a loser because moderate voters were turned off by Palin like she was the plague.

Hard to win an election with someone who is viewed as an extremist from Alaska.

Hard to win an election with the couric interview.

Hard to win an election when suburban women are repulsed by Palin.

Hard to win an election with Palin giving interviews like the Couric one.

Palin is such a great candidate she thought sarkozy was calling about Joe the Plumber.

Palin dragged McCain down to the Huckabee level.

Without Palin McCain would now be president elect and Obama would be the junior senator from illinios. Palin was a disaster.

Palin handed the white house to Obama.’

The only way for you Palinbots to see how repulsive she is to moderate voters if she runs in 2012 or 2016 and loses the general election by worse than mondale lost.

You Palinbots are so dense. You are politically tone deaf.

You follow Palin like a personality cult. You don’t care about substance. Get a clue Palinbots.

Interesting…..

First off now I know you have read all the media BS concerning Alaska… but give me a break, I don’t do drugs. Sorry Sweetie!

Second, I am an independent. Never stated otherwise and for someone whom think I am doing drugs and is a republican … who actually gives out information hand over fist to anyone who asks for it concerning Alaska. You are totally misinformed and ignorant…. actually I will go a step further and say completely stupid.

Third, you seriosly have SOME issues, if not more then i can count on a hand.

Wanna try saying something of factual truth rather then supposedly saying you are conservative and spewing crap?

upinak on December 23, 2008 at 6:07 PM

There was one issue that McCain could have used against Obama and the dem party as a whole. That is the Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac issue. His hesitance to paint the dem party with this debacle haunts the (R) party still. It allowed the DPM (Dem Propaganda Machine) to set the narrative.
I still don’t know why the GOP refuses to set the record straight. This only highlights my lack of faith in the future of the party.

This was a bigger issue than even Wright/Ayers issue

lwssdd on December 23, 2008 at 6:07 PM

The key is to get a candidate like reagan who can appeal to conservatives and moderates.

Actually, that’s untrue. According to the RCP poll average, McCain only led in four polls between August 1 and September 1. He did not take a strong lead until after the GOP convention, and quickly lost that lead after ’suspending’ his campaign after the financial crisis.

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:16 PM

joey what happened is that palin happened.

Palin turned McCain’s electorate into Huckabee’s.

McCain’s mistake was picking Palin because it took away all the independent voters who were going to vote for McCain because they didn’t like Obama and were so repulsed by Palin they voted for Obama.

There were stories all around of clinton supporters who were going to vote for McCain and after the Palin pick were so repulsed they ended up volunteering for Obama.

Palin is a disaster outside of the rural hard core conservative base. Why can’t you Palin supporters see that. How dense can you be?

Obama was at 41 percent in a reuters poll in mid august.

McCain in mid august was up in every poll in florida.

Palin ripped the heart out of McCain’s support among independents and let Obama dominate the middle.

Palin was mayor of wasilla two years ago. She was a disastrous pick.

It took the whole Obama’s a risk away.

I think Benny Shakur and Rayadan on the people in charge here … no we are posting sarcastic articles about the only conservative on the Presidential ticket in order to get comments and hits

shameful behavior

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Just for giggles, I’m going write a post in the manner of ryandan.

Here goes. This is me pretending to be ryandan:

Palin is evil.

She make people in big cities so sick and scary.

Obama socialist because Palin make him elected. I afraid of Palin. She eats wolves and burns witches.

Everyone loved McCain before he picked evil witch woman from Wasilla. Her family is on drugs and behave like naughty loose women. She is evil.

Independents have nightmares about Palin. They see her face and scream.

She must never leave Alaska or the world will come to an end. Someone lock her in an igloo before it too late.

That felt rather good. I recommend that all of you make a fake ryandan post. It’s quite therapeutic. As the great saying goes: Mock the devil and he will flee from you.

ramrocks on December 23, 2008 at 6:50 PM

ramrocks on December 23, 2008 at 6:50 PM

As long as Ryandan is a dude:

Palin dumb
Palin dumb Republican
She no smart like me … me independent
Smart independent dont like conservative
Palin is stupid like Reagan
We all know that Reagan was loser
we need McCain to run, McCain bring in moderate
Palin ruined moderate
Moderates no like attractive women
I should know I no like attractive women
mommy bring me cookies in basement to blog about Palin
Axelrod promise paycheck so me can buy Obama book
Aexlrod tells me that I “typical white person”

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:54 PM

Look at Pawlenty’s daughters can you see either one of them ending having a kid in high school and a mother in law as a druggie.

Also Palin is not responsible either. She wasn’t planning on having that child.

Her e-mails with the trooper mess show such a temper.

She was seen screaming at staff.

She was so out of it in that prank sarkozy call.

Have you seen Palin’s doodles. She is so strange.

She left a school in hawaii because it was raining too much.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 6:56 PM

But you guys just keep listening to Hannity, and Laura and the rest who told you how swell John McCain was! How can you now be critical? You were shilling for him too because the RNC told you to!

sabbott on December 23, 2008 at 4:17 PM

You obviously do not pay attention. If you did you would know conservatives where not singing the praises of John McCain, we wher going to hold our noses and vote for him. That is until he named Palin for his VP. That is when the fire began and the base was energized. It’s o.k. if you are not a conservative, go ahead read some more learn some and maybe, just maybe you will soon realize just how right we are!!!

lwssdd on December 23, 2008 at 6:58 PM

right on cue!

lmao … anyway, I have stated my “complaints” about the site recently

but all in all … nice site

I love watching people like Ryandan …

good times good times

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:59 PM

Have you seen Palin’s doodles. She is so strange.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 6:56 PM

You mean the brainstorming notepad she had when planning to run for mayor? yes, I have..

I’ve also seen Obama’s doodle with large phallic symbols and old white men.. now that is strange..

DaveC on December 23, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Ryandan..

you want to make God laugh?.. make a plan..

DaveC on December 23, 2008 at 7:03 PM

jingle bells ! Jingle all the way!!!11

An Era of Hate on December 23, 2008 at 7:03 PM

hahaaha, That Reagan is an idiot!!!

An Era of Hate on December 23, 2008 at 7:08 PM

Does ryandan have a wife or girlfriend?

Is his wife or girlfriend as hot as Palin?

Crux Australis on December 23, 2008 at 7:10 PM

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:54 PM

It’s fun, isn’t it? But I gotta tell ya, the real ryandan is so hilarious. His/her latest is a classic — “She left a school in hawaii because it was raining too much.”

I seriously think that it might be Allah messing with us. It’s just too funny to be true.

ramrocks on December 23, 2008 at 7:11 PM

I replied to your email upinak

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 6:12 PM

I have been busy! go check your other email …

upinak on December 23, 2008 at 7:12 PM

She was seen screaming at staff.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 6:56 PM

Awesome! I would have paid money to see her scream at the McCain staff and make them cry!

Didn’t one of the anonymous leakers claim that she make McCain staffers cry? That was my favorite leak. I don’t think any of them were true, but I sure wish that one was.

ramrocks on December 23, 2008 at 7:14 PM

She was throwing temper tantrums after she read articles about herself.

She is wacked out. She is the worst thing to ever happen to the republican party.

She was a major drag on the ticket and McCain would now be president elect without her dragging him down.

McCain would have made a great president.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:16 PM

1/20/13, the swearing in of a Patriot and the first woman POTUS! That would be Sarah Palin for all you Hillary supporters.

kirkill on December 23, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Why would she show up for her swearing in on a Sunday? She’s smarter than that.

grdred944 on December 23, 2008 at 7:16 PM

I have no problem with Palin screaming at people … especially if it was CBS hack Nicolle Wallace

Ryadan is either AP or Carl Cameron …

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 7:17 PM

Maybe Todd will write her speech for CPAC like her wrote her RGA speech down in Miami.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Her eyes are so strange. She is a pyscho.

Her family is dysfunctional.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:20 PM

austin look at the polling in mid august McCain was on a course to win the election.

No offense but some of you are on crack. Obama spent THREE-QUARTERS OF A BILLION DOLLARS to get elected. Osama Bin Laden could have gotten at least 50% of the vote with that kind of bankroll.

Sure McCain and his people (especially that ^^^^ Wallace)screwed up and they royally screwed up handling Palin but they could have done everything perfectly with her and it would not have mattered.

grdred944 on December 23, 2008 at 7:24 PM

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Are you sure that you’re not on meth? Run your tongue around your mouth. Are your teeth there?

meltenn on December 23, 2008 at 7:29 PM

If Palin’s so mavericky why didn’t she say what she wanted to? I actually like this woman and yet I cannot wait until she loses like 45 states in 2012. What are all you people going to do? Form a militia and attack the capitol?

alex342 on December 23, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Palin reminded too many people of Bush.

It was a disastrous pick.

McCain should have picked Pawlenty.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Let’s just cut this short.

There is absolutely nothing McCain could have done to win the election, short of choosing Barack Obama as his running mate. This was not his year. It doesn’t matter what people said about how Palin affected their voting preference. People don’t vote for vice president. People vote for President. Do you think people would have chosen Dick Cheney over Joe Lieberman? Probably not, but they were voting for George Bush over Al Gore.

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:36 PM

McCain should have picked Pawlenty.

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Yeah, that would have excited the base.

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:37 PM

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:37 PM

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 7:38 PM

ryandan on December 23, 2008 at 6:56 PM

I’m only answering you because it amuses me.

Also Palin is not responsible either. She wasn’t planning on having that child.

Hey, that’s life. Are you one of those liberal woman that Dennis Miller was talking about when he said, “I think they hate her – mostly woman on the left hate her – because to me from the outside it appears that she has a great sex life. I think she has non-neurotic sex with that Todd Palin guy.”

Have you seen Palin’s doodles. She is so strange.

What kind of doodles do you make? I tend to sketch Aztec/Mayan/cuneiform/hieroglyphic trim designs in pen and ink along the periphery of my note pages. I don’t know what that says about me. Human sacrifice? Pyramid power? Pre-Columbian warrior cults?

She left a school in hawaii because it was raining too much.

So? I had a friend who transferred from UC Irvine to UC Northridge ‘cuz she couldn’t stand the Lord of the Rings dorm theme names. Well, okay — that, and ‘cuz Irvine sucks.

ramrocks on December 23, 2008 at 7:38 PM

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:36 PM

good points

McCain was going to go really “maverick” and pick Hillary as his VP to “reach across the aisle”

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 7:39 PM

Do you know what is the most important thing about Palin’s college career to me? She paid her own way through it.

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:40 PM

jimmy the notable on December 23, 2008 at 7:40 PM

yup …

joey24007 on December 23, 2008 at 7:42 PM

I see ryandan is STILL a die-hard Maverick supporter.

Let’s stop the autopsy. McCain was DEAD on 2/5/08.

Now, can we bury the body already and get on with it?

Of course they misused the Cuda. They should have taped up Maverick’s mouth and put him in a closet and ran the Cuda for president.

No Rinos ‘12.

meltenn on December 23, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Peasant revolt? No one invited me.
A grinch stole my guns this Christmas, but I still have my pitchfork and torch.
When do we revolt?

alex342 on December 23, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Hmmm, Alaska has its own missile defense installations, Elmendorf and Eielson Air Force Bases with the latest fighters, Forts Richardson and Wainwright, and a motivated, well-armed population.

I’m thinking Palin could invade and occupy large portions of Western Canada, as well as the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. Much of the population would welcome the Alaskan forces as liberators.

Cross the Rubicon, Sarah!

Whatever minuscule street cred you had.. you completely lost it..

You may as well been rapping this:

I’m a white boy, but my neck is red
I put Miracle Whip on my Wonder Bread /
My face is pale, nah, I’ve never been in jail /
Me and Buffy spend every winter at Vail /
How many bitches have I slapped? Zero. Unh! /
And Martha Stewart happens to be my hero /
I grew up on a farm and I was born with no rhythm /
Dr. Phil’s my uncle and I like to hang with him /
I can’t dance /
I wear khaki pants /
My middle name’s Lance /
My Grandma’s from France /
So maybe I’m wack /
‘Cause my skin ain’t black /
But you can’t talk smack /
‘Cause whitey just struck back

at the Apollo.. (from ‘Scary Movie 3′)

Meh, I was thinking about just reducing San Francisco to rubble anyway and letting the residents eat each other in the ruins. If you occupied California, San Francisco would be Tikrit.
