Breaking: Obama finally releases report on staff’s contacts with Blagojevich; Update: No quid pro quo

4:30 p.m. on December 23rd, when both he and Emanuel are literally thousands of miles away. Well played, Messiah.
Here’s the five-page PDF. Updates coming.
Update: In brief: Obama talked to Emanuel and Axelrod about his preferences for the seat, then Emanuel talked to Blago once or twice and to Blago’s chief of staff (who’s also been indicted) four times to relay those preferences. The NYT had considered it a “leading unanswered question” whether Team Barry actually gave them a short list of preferred candidates; now we know. No offers of any quid pro quo were made, but who knows if Blagojevich assumed that appointing someone on The One’s list might earn him something from the administration down the line.
The most interesting bit comes at the top of page 3, in the explanation for why Valerie Jarrett was initially touted by CNN as Obama’s top choice and then suddenly untouted: According to the memo, Emanuel was confused about whether Obama wanted him to push any single candidate for the seat. It was he, supposedly, who took the initiative and recommended Jarrett to Blago, thinking Obama would want him to; only “later” did he learn that The One didn’t want to express any preference beyond the short list. Question: Um, is that likely?
See also the bottom of page 3 for a friendly chat between Jarrett herself and an Illinois SEIU chief, who told her that Blagojevich had told him he wanted to be Health and Human Services head. They both agreed that “it would never happen,” but if you’re looking for evidence that people in Obama’s inner circle knew that Blago was interested in a position with Team Barry, there you go. Exit question: If Rahm only had five or six calls with Blago and his aides, where’d the Sun-Times get the number 21 from?

What a hard-hitting report! /s
This specious document, minus proofs of any kind, would be thrown out as “evidence” in traffic court.
But it will, of course, be good enough for those who have been giving Osama Obama’s shoes tongue baths from the start.
And it is perfectly in line with the “defense” Greg Craig and others ginned up for the Clenis when he was impeached.

The question now is whether Blago is going to play ball. Emanuel certainly spoke to the Guv more often then he originally led us to believe and there is no doubt that Blago indicated he wanted tit-for-tat. The Black Caesar must be pretty confident that Blago is going to play ball before the rest of Fitz’s info goes public.

I believe it was the El Conservatoro Grande El Rushbo himself who said that it is impossible for Democrats to have ethical violations as they possesses no ethical standards. 1. The report comes from Obama
2. Everything else that Obama has ever said had a lie somewhere in it.
Conclusion: This report is a lie and/or contains lies.
The Fool has been taught by his handlers to never tell the truth. This is no different.
notagool on December 23, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Pulleeeeeze!!!!! What did they expect from this report?
It’s true, Team Obama cannot exonerate itself. But, considering the Feds may have tapes of the other ends of these conversation, or would have tapes of other conversations not cited in this report, it would seem that this is probably a fair representation of what did occur. If Team Obama lied or stretched the truth with their report, it would likely come out after more of what Fitzgerald had was revealed.
But, considering Fitzgerald has said Obama is not accused of any wrong doing, and there has been no evidence to show that anyone on Obama’s staff had any part in any wrong doing, I really can’t see how anyone would think it likely that Team Obama did something legally or ethically wrong here. If they had done something wrong, it would be in their best interest to fess up to it and proactively spin it rather than omit it from the report only to have it come out later.

Just as an example, say he’s interviewing John Harris. He wouldn’t want Harris to know that Emmanuel said he spoke to Harris four times.
He basically didn’t want any of this information to taint the interviews he was conducting last week.

Your idea makes sense until one factors in the possibility of Obama cleaning house on prosecutors. Fitz is in the weird position of working on an investigation that may include his future boss.
More to my point, though, is that Obama reserves the right to fire prosecutors. I really doubt he’d single out Fitz, but I can easily envision Obama cleaning house and firing a lot of them, Fitz included, then giving some speech about how necessary it is to remove these “divisive figures from past administrations.” Obama can publicly say today that he’s clean, then next month fire the only guy that can prove him wrong.

jp on December 23, 2008 at 5:51 PM
I tend to agree with you, and I was about to word the same sort of argument that you posted. However, one thing still troubles me. It must have been clear to Emanuel
that Blago was demanding a tit-for-tat. I frankly find the idea that he just happened to pull Valerie Jarrett’s name off the list after his discussion with Blago unconvincing. I think they knew that Blago was playing dirty, and they didn’t want to touch it. But they didn’t report it either. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt in this scenario and assuming they had clean motives in not wanting to be involved in purchasing a senate seat for Jarrett. But why did they not immediately report this to the Feds? Perhaps they are so used to Chicago style corruption that they just shrugged it off. Or perhaps they were hoping that another person they favored (like Jesse Jackson, Jr.) would be willing to pay Blago for the seat.
They might not have been legally obligated to report what Blago said, and they might feel confident that they didn’t say anything incriminating on the tapes. That may be why they feel confident they won’t get busted. But the public should not feel secure in this. Team Obama might have been behaving just within the letter of the law, but they could very well have violated the spirit of the law by ignoring such obvious corruption.
In his first press conference on this scandal, Obama denounced politicians who are not complete crooks themselves who behave “within the lines of legality, but still don’t fulfill the spirit of service” because they seek “narrow political calculations” instead.
His team might have acted “within the lines of legality,” but that doesn’t mean they were behaving ethically.

snaggletoothie on December 23, 2008 at 5:57 PM
“Information?” You talking about the fantasies spread by this “internal report?”
Absolutely there’s information in there. What Obama and his team claims they did in regard to interaction with Blagojevich and his staff is very pertinent information.
Fitzgerald is interviewing all these people. He probably interviewed people on Obama’s staff and he certainly is interviewing people on Blagojevich’s staff like Harris.
So, if Emanuel claims he spoke to Harris four times. But Harris told Fitzgerald they spoke 21 times, obviously there’s a problem there.
You may see lies, but as of now, there’s really no reason to believe they are lies. Given the fact that Team Obama knows Fitzgerald is conducting these interviews, one would believe that they would be honest in their answers because it would most likely come out if they weren’t.
But anyway, you are under no obligation to believe this report. But keep in mind that Fitzgerald went out of his way to say Obama was not accused of any wrong doing and warned against speculation on possible guilt of other people mentioned in the wire taps (specifically people Blago and company were talking about bringing offers to).
From everything I’ve seen, it looks like Team Obama is clean. In fact, there has not been one piece of solid evidence (or even un-solid for that matter) to show that Team Obama did anything illegal or unethical.

According to this report, it seems that Obama always wanted Jarret in the White House, but Jarret seemingly had some interest in being appointed to the Senate seat. The report says that after Obama spoke to her and expressed his desire for her to be in the White House, she withdrew her name.
Now, you say the timing is suspicious because of the dates where Blago went off on the tapes about getting “nothing” from Team Obama were right before Jarret withdrew her name.
What’s missing from this report is the conversation between Harris and Emanuel that George Steph (sorry, not going to look up the spelling of his name) reported on Sunday… the “we’d only get appreciation for this, right?” “Right.” exchange.
That potentially could have tipped off Team Obama that Blago was up to no good, so he withdrew Jarret. But that seems a stretch. It’s also very plausible that the timing was a coincidence and she withdrew solely because Obama wanted her in the White House.
This report is just one piece of the puzzle. Fitz has more information, but as of now, there’s no indication that Team Obama did anything wrong.

But Jarrett wasn’t finished. The SEIU guy was still negotiating on her behalf.
Team Obama tries to get around that by saying he isn’t on their transition team, but so what? He was speaking for Jarrett. And Fitzgerald included him in the criminal complaint.
There’s a problem there, even if it isn’t a legal problem.
MayBee on December 23, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Okay let me understand this.
Blago didn’t hit Emanuel up for a quid pro quo from Obama to name Valerie Jarrett as Obama’s replacement to the Senate … which is Obama’s quid pro quo to Valerie Jarrett.
So one quid pro quo per appointment I guess. Must be so kind of change in the rules.
Now we’re supposed to believe that Emanuel just pulled Valerie Jarrett our of his hat because even though he is Obama’s Chief of Staff and he did have a ’short list’ to pass to Blago, he wasn’t exactly sure if Valerie Jarrett was on that list.
Right.
The story that is being missed here in all this is that Valerie Jarrett has absolutely no qualifications for a US Senate seat other than being a Chicago insider and an Obama crony.
Now what was that about Change in Washington politics?
Texas Gal on December 23, 2008 at 6:28 PM
You have to take into consideration the guy who wrote this is Greg Craig the goto cleanup guy for the Clinton years.
Careful parsing is needed.
This report deals only with the Senate Seat and Rahm also has a House Seat in play here.
Plus there could be any conversation NOT RELATED TO THE SENATE SEAT that could bulk up the total calls.
