The obligatory “Human Events names Palin conservative of the year” post

I told Ed this morning that the only way we’re going to drum up even moderate interest in the site this week is to bait readers with posts about Palin or atheism.
I guess I’ll start looking for atheism news after this.
Who cares if Palin was qualified to be President? She was running with John McCain! There was no chance that ticket was going to place her anywhere near the presidency. In fact, I can’t think of a better place to put someone you wanted to keep away from the White House than on a ticket with McCain.
Palin was a kick in the pants, she energized conservatives, and she made liberal heads explode. Other than his brave military service, introducing Sarah Palin to Americans is the greatest thing John McCain ever did for his country.
But unless Palin is going to be the perpetual running mate of “moderate” Republicans who need conservative bona fides, she will need to become wiser and better read. Even Reagan didn’t run for President in his 40s.
That’s Coulter writing, although if I didn’t know it, I could have guessed: No one else except Limbaugh has enough conservative goodwill banked to escape a treason charge for suggesting that Sarahcuda isn’t perfectly well read already. In fact, she suggests Palin spend the next decade honing her chops as governor instead of challenging The One. A fine idea — in fact, a majority of HA readers agree that she should wait until 2016 — but that would put her on a collision course with Jindal, and I’m far from convinced that match-up favors her.
HE interviewed Palin for the occasion, too. A snippet:
GIZZI: For my birthday this year, friends gave me the new biography of Andrew Jackson [American Lion, by Jon Meacham]. One of the passages that reminded me of you is when the author is explaining how vilified Jackson was and says, ‘He was the first President to come from the common people, not from an educated elite, and he never ceased to see himself as their champion.’ Is that something you can identify with and do you think the fact you had a similar background to Jackson’s was a reason for some of the criticism you received from some of the punditocracy and the media in general?
PALIN: Maybe initially it is a hindrance for someone starting out. But once the electorate knows what that candidate’s convictions are and positions are, I don’t think that matters. You just prefaced your question with the fact that I didn’t come from that ‘stock’. I got my education from the University of Idaho because that’s what I could afford. It was the least-expensive school that offered the programs I knew would benefit me in my future. My Dad was a school teacher and had four kids in college at about the same time. It didn’t occur to me to ask my parents to pay for my college education. We all worked through school and paid for schools that we could afford. I still got a great education. No, I don’t come from the self-proclaimed ‘movers and shakers’ group and that’s fine with me. It’s caused me, or rather, allowed me, to work harder and pulled myself up by my bootstraps without anyone else helping me. I think it allows me to be in touch with the vast majority of Americans who are in the same position that I am. That is desiring government to be on our side and not against us. And that means, in a lot of ways, for government to get out of the way to allow our families and our businesses to keep more of what they produce, to meet our own priorities.
Elsewhere in the interview, contra the boldface part, she explains her initial support for TARP — which of course my boss vehemently opposed from day one, just like she’s always vehemently opposed the sort of path to citizenship for lawbreakers that Palin is on record as supporting. Exit question one: If Palin’s the new gold standard for conservatism, what’s Michelle? Diamond/platinum? Exit question two: Why is it that McCain’s support for TARP “appalled” Joe the Plumber and helped convince him that Maverick was but the lesser of two evils, whereas Palin’s “absolutely the real deal” notwithstanding her support for the very same policy?

Yeah, the only places that really happens are at blogs like Ace’s. They like Cheney over there, too – and talk endlessly about his supposed sexual prowess. Ask an Ace O’Spades denizen sometime about the “Night of the Rampaging Cougar-Man”. :)

The ‘Cuda does nothing for me, perhaps I will have to reluctantly vote for her AGAIN some day so she can get slaughtered AGAIN by Obama.

Why are you afraid of Sarah?
upinak on December 22, 2008 at 6:08 PM
It was McCain people were having to hold their noses for. And the reason a lot of people just said “screw it”.

Still, she is undeniably hawt. LOL

No, except that the person who made up the concept of “Night of the Rampaging Cougar-Man” might have been taking some pills of whatever size.

Allah pundit,
u still insist she is for amnesty for illegally alliens after one interview, a few days later around Halloween during a interview w/ Greta from FOx she later clariefied what she said. She said doesn’t support any type of path to legalization unless the borders are secure first which was what the Mc Cains campaign position was. FInd the interview so u don’t insist she is for amnesty for illegals.
it was just one interview with telemundo for crying out loud.
rwoodward6 on December 22, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Meh. Unlike the case with the Clintons or Obamas, any picture of Sarah Palin is fine.

The GOP will lose again. Romney may do a little better than McCain but will not get enough votes to win.
Crux Australis on December 22, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Palin’s MILF shelf-life is going to run pretty low by 2016. Another reason she needs to run in 2012. I don’t want to look at Margaret Thatcher come 2016 or even worse, 2020.
grdred944 on December 22, 2008 at 6:31 PM
I’m not so sure about the match-up favoring Jindal. First, let me state that I like Jindal a lot. I think he’s awesome — exorcism and all (and as a cradle Catholic, let me say that Catholic converts like Jindal and Ingraham and Kudlow–and the list could go on and on–are our finest).
But, as Robert Stacy McCain famously put it:
As RSM noted, this year we ran “Don Rickles/Tim Conway” against “Will Smith/Lawrence Fishburne” (though I disagree with the great RSM on that point. I think Obama was more “Sidney Poiters”).
I love Jindal, but let’s face it — the man looks like Alfalfa from “Our Gang”. There’s a charisma gap. Palin is a personality made for glossy magazine covers. In fact, the Madison Avenue crowd, though as liberal as can be, are secretly sad that she’s gone back to the Land of the Midnight Sun. She was a marketing gold mine — a veritable Klondike Gold Rush.
I hate to sound so superficial, but them’s the breaks. The electorate is superficial. It’s no coincidence that our most successful conservative politician was also a movie star. We should be grateful that Palin is a solid conservative.
And, yes, AP, she is a conservative. It’s not just wishful thinking among Palinistas. I don’t hold TARP against her. We all thought the sky was falling if they didn’t pass it pronto. The folks at National Review, which is arguably the premier conservative publication, were split on it, and more of them were for it than against it. We were all in the same situation as Palin, and we all were bitten. But, as the ‘Cuda said, “One bitten, twice shy.”

grdred944 on December 22, 2008 at 6:32 PM
As an Australian I’m interested in Sarah’s foreign policy positions. When are we likely hear anything from Sarah about that? I hope she is not another neocon as far as foreign policy is concerned.
Crux Australis on December 22, 2008 at 6:34 PM
There are loads of really great pictures of Sarah Palin, and loads more really good ones, some that are just ok, but I don’t see any bad pictures of her. Even the shot where she looks like she’s throwing a mean glare at someone is not unflattering.
Newsweek took a closeup of her face and blew it up %500 just so a faint laugh line would be visible on their cover. They had such a hard time finding an unflattering picture, so they went and manufactured one. Still, not THAT bad.
Sarah Palin is the most naturally photogenic politician I have ever seen in my life. The cameras LOVE that lady. It’s like she was born to be on magazine covers and TV.
Brian1972 on December 22, 2008 at 6:35 PM
Any remaining cred NR had died with WFB. It is little more than a center-right rag these days. Harsh maybe, but my subscription dated back to the 70’s when they all had balls.
grdred944 on December 22, 2008 at 6:35 PM
Just make sure you boys down under don’t do anything stupid to piss her off, and you’ll be fine mate :)
Brian1972 on December 22, 2008 at 6:39 PM
I don’t think she is a neocon, though some neocons like her. Palin is much more libertarian in her approach to government. In fact, during the primaries the only candidate that Palin gave enthusiastic impromptu praise for was Ron Paul. I’m not suggesting that she would agree with him on everything, but she is certainly sympathetic to his libertarian ideals for limited government and respect for the Constitution. In fact, the Ron Paul supporters believed that she would have been an ideal running mate for him if by some miracle he had won the nomination.
I got the distinct sense from Palin’s pre-McCain campaign interviews that she is not interested in an uber-interventionist foreign policy. See here at 19:45 into the interview and here at 3:43 into the interview. Now you may suggest that she has now been turned into a neo-con podperson after the McCain aides have force fed past issues of the Weekly Standard down her throat, but I don’t think so because she is the only candidate who made the clear connection between our energy policy and our wars. That counts for a lot in my book. See here for proof at 3:44 into the video.

I’ve heard this and similar before. Personally, I don’t really see it — he just seems kind of brainy and cultured. But you’re right about the importance of image. At least for me, when he is animated (ie: on tv as opposed in still images), his slightly geeky appearance fades behind his intelligent demeanor. My recollection (it’s been a while since I’ve watched him on tv) is that he has a good speaking voice, not a squeaky one, so that also helps.
Another factor to consider is that after four years of being told that Obama, who is a pretty asexual guy (at best), is the model of American manliness and charisma, the public is going to be conditioned to accept a guy with a slight build like Jindal, as long as his suit is good.
Personally, although Palin definitely has great charisma, particularly before a large crowd, I think Jindal performs very well in one-on-one interviews. I suspect he would do better on the all important (to some) Meet the Press venues.
Y-not on December 22, 2008 at 6:48 PM
Dude, you are delusional. First, the whole MILF thing is a bit juvenile and vulgar, but hey thems are the internets.
I think when Sarah turns 54, she won’t look very much different than she does now. Heck, she’s 44 now and could pass for 30. She’s had five children, and the fifth was 7 months along before anyone could tell. She is an athlete, and takes great care of herself. Don’t worry about that stuff, that rose will be in bloom for some time to come.
Brian1972 on December 22, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Whatever has Australia done that has pissed off the US?
Crux Australis on December 22, 2008 at 6:50 PM
And she wasn’t even very specific in that interview.
When Laura Ingraham met Palin long before she was a vp candidate, Laura said that Palin was against the amnesty stuff. In fact, Laura confirmed what Mark Levin declared — Palin is “one of us”. Having Rush, Levin, Ingraham, Hannity, Beck, and Coulter certify your conservative credentials is no small matter.

For the record, I love Australia. Going there for a month with a fat line of credit is a dream of mine. Also, from the talk I’ve read on various milblogs, the Aussies have done some serious ass kicking in the GWOT to date in Iraq and Afghanistan, plus Special Ops in the Phillipines.
Steaks and shrimp on the barbie, beers and friends on the beach sounds like my kinda nation, despite the bird-eating spiders :)
Brian1972 on December 22, 2008 at 7:03 PM
And there you have it. Palin is extraordinary in front of crowds. I’ve never seen a candidate who could work a crowd better and that includes Reagan. She has the ability to make people feel as if she’s speaking just them in a sort of “okay, guys, let me tell ya what the deal is” sort of way. It’s remarkable and powerful and that’s why the left wants to make sure she never gets the chance to use it again in a presidential campaign. The smart leftists spread lies about her, the stupid ones believe the lies and think she’s dumb.
Does anyone happen to have video footage of Reagan giving “Meet the Press” type interviews? I don’t recall him doing that sort of thing. I believe that he appeared on the Tonight Show, but not when he was president.
ramrocks on December 22, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Actually there is a lot about Alaska that reminds me of Australia. Resource rich, sparsely populated (outside of the big cities that is), still much is frontier territory. Upside-down and back to front compared to the rest of the world. Amongst other things.
I will be looking at Sarah’s future with great interest.
Crux Australis on December 22, 2008 at 7:12 PM

Are there any edible marsupials worth chasing around the bush, or are they all national treasures? Maybe the fishing prospects are less objectionable. You have a domestic cattle industry there, so kangaroos don’t fill the role of moose and caribou in the Arctic.
We have lots of deer in these parts. They are cute, but they make some good eating too. Venison chili is quite good. Damn, I’m hungry!

Is that a tacit admisssion that you don’t have the prowness to attract posters by the substance of the threads? That you have to resort to bashing Christianity or Palin in a Geraldo-like frenzy since you don’t have the intellectual chops to attract attention by thoughtful in-depth posts about the topics that matter? Really, there’s plenty of interesting serious issues without baiting your audience. It shows that you have nothing but contempt for their views and you’re just entertaining yourselves by provoking them with hot-button topics.

I have no idea if the color is symbolic or just a great color-likewise with the face paint (although it matches the jacket).

I love Sarah Palin. I’d never heard of her when John McCain picked her as his VP candidate. I was vacationing with my family, totally sick of the O obsession and pretty much sick of the campaigns. When McCain introduced her in Ohio and she spoke I immediately connected with her. I have not had the reaction to any politician before. I think that she is the real and genuine article and she is definately a woman who walks her talk and lives her convictions. She has my full support and what ever she decides to do she showed American woman it’s okay to love our husbands, loves our kids and especially our special needs kids, it’s okay to have faith in God and belive in what the Bible says, it’s okay to go against your own party when its wrong, small unintrusive government is better, fiscal responsibility is good, and America is the best country in the world. She is the exact opposite of Obama and I still can’t believe America voted that guy in. Anyway yes she sexy and atheletic and good for her. She inspired me to drop 10 myself… I hate it when some of the guys here judge her only by those good looks though. I suspect she has accomplished more in spite of her sexiness, beauty etc. than those men have …and they probably wouln’t stand a chance with her…I mean look at Todd, all around great American man, husband, father, and sexy good looking too.

However, I’m positive that McClatchy will fire all of the weather, sports, and business writers before they touch anyone on their anti-Palin squad. A left-wing paper has to have its priorities straight.

I’m not Australian, but I’ll chime in. Last year for Christmas dinner we had kangaroo roast. Verrrry tasty. It was like a very good beef tenderloin (more flavorful than a tenderloin). I roasted it with root vegetables and made a simple sauce with some wine and red currants. Bought the meat online.

Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football just compared Aaron Rodgers sitting on the bench for 4 years as Brett Favre’s understudy to Sarah Palin. First Tony, Rodgers did have 4 years to prepare to be a first-stringer and could be best described as a decent QB, who will never be an elite signal-caller. Sarah Palin, on the other hand was thrust into the world of Presidential politics without virtually ANY preparation or knowledge of her running mate or his campaign ’system’; secondly on leaving the campaign trail, Sarah is as popular or more popular as she was on the campaign trail, the sign of somebody who is a rising superstar. Sarah will never be forgotten Tony; Rodgers will be only a footnote in football history as to who succeeded Brett Favre.

Reading the troll comments at Human Events made once again consider how divergent the public perception of Palin is from the woman herself.
Take for example the notion that she doesn’t read the newspaper. People joke about her “all of them, any of them” comment to Couric. Well, according to this, she does seem to read “all of them” (except the WashPost).
Kaylene Johnson’s Palin bio noted:
Please note that this bio was published long before the Couric interview. Long before the Couric interview people were commenting on Palin’s photographic memory and fondness for reading newspapers and books. I think her answer to Couric’s newspaper question was flippant because Palin was clearly offended by it. I I was offended by it too. It was as if Couric was asking her, “do you know how to read?” Palin has written op-eds for the NY Times and was quite fond of writing op-eds and letters to the editors of major newspapers long before she became governor of her state.
There is another odd little fact about her personality which doesn’t fit in with the public perception of her: she has been described by almost everyone who knew her growing up as shy and reserved. They also say that she was self-disciplined, determined, goal oriented, unflinchingly upbeat and positive, and even a natural leader, but also shy and an unassuming.
Her old high school basketball coach had this to say about her:
Palin’s husband told Greta Van Susteren that his wife was shy in high school and not someone he would have pictured having a political career.
During her college years:
Her friends did discover that she had one extraordinary talent:
They also noted this:
It would appear that she was always “intellectually curious.”
Fred Barnes noted this in an article on Palin:
It seems that our media-driven perception of this woman is totally divergent from the real Sarah Palin.

Troll volume seems to be dropping off at most of the sites I frequent, though the Democrats seem to have made comments sections at the Alaska papers and TV stations their priority. I guess that makes sense – the next nexus for Palin is her 2010 gubernatorial campaign, and the DNC will be gunning for her.
I think some of the more rabid trolls are losing their enthusiasm as Obama gives the nutroots the shaft on Cabinet appointments, and as we get dragged further into the Blago/Obama/Rezko crime drama.

Palin’s husband says she was shy in high school and not someone he would have pictured having a political career.

The media, including this “pundit,” continue to demean Palin in ways they never could understand because of their own haughtiness.

I was just watching this lecture Jonah Goldberg gave on his book “Liberal Fascism”. The use of religion by the left to sell their nonsense.

Gee… do we really need another dim wit in that office. It really is embarrassing. I know its popular in some quarters to think that education and accomplishment is somehow elitist and bad but our current President leveraged that crap and we got a real moron for eight years. He ruined the Republican brand for years to come and allowed a virtual nobody to get elected President because he seemed marginally competent. Americans don’t want someone they would enjoy or a beer or a date with. They want someone that is smart and can execute.
lexhamfox on December 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM
yes, we want somebody like harvard educated obama who ran such a great campaign in 57 of 60 states……maybe we need a return of the best and the brightest …those ivy leaguers who got us into vietnam
joey24007 on December 22, 2008 at 9:47 PM
You’re being sarcastic in quoting that, aren’t you? Because Coulter was making a joke by ascribing to Palin that gaffe about fallen soldiers being present in the audience. That was actually something that Obama said.
Now don’t you feel like the complete idiot.
Don’t worry. I forgive you because it’s Christmas, and I did a dumb thing in posting the same long comment multiple times because I didn’t think it went through the first time.

First of all, that quote belonged to Obama, not Palin (though I suspect you knew that).
Regardless, I don’t think anyone is saying that education is unimportant, but I do think that the elitism that says “only education at the correct colleges is important” is unhelpful.

Hey there ya obvious bobble-headed reject.
I was actually THERE for the speech. It was the yearly Memorial Day run with multiple different Bikers groups in Alaska, which ended at the 50 ft Flag Pole and Weterans Memorial on the parkstrip.
I would LOVE for you to tell one of the Vietnam Vet Bikers that Sarah is a dim wit…. Good GOD Almighty, you wouldn’t be able to stand!

I’m still amazed that anyone could have misunderstood Coulter’s comments. But then, go read the troll comments at Human Events. Some are truly amusing — like the guy who wrote a disparaging comment about Alaska, and then listed his location as Alaska. There are suddenly so many posters on these websites who are “from Alaska”. Amazing that a state with a population of less than 700,000 has so many citizens posting on so many websites.

I greatly appreciate Michelle Malkin, but other commenters are dead right. It’s easy to find fault when you don’t have to run for anything, or take any responsibility. Kind of like the difference between being a community organizer and a mayor, which was the first comment I ever heard from Sara Palin.
Truth is, I was disappointed through much of the Reagan administration. It seemed they were always giving in to the liberal Democrats.
Now, it’s obvious that Reagan got it right. It’s hard to be perfect when you’re trying to get our political rivals to give you what you need. Reagan did the best he could, and pushed through his priorities. He wanted to reduce the deficit, reduce taxes to fix the economy, and strengthen the nation’s military. But the three could not be done at the same time. He had to settle for building up the military while putting the economy on a good footing. Unfortunately, this let the deficit climb to new heights, and he is still criticized for causing high deficits.
But Reagan was right. The national defense had to be strong, and the economy had to improve. Between winning the Cold War and making the economy strong, the country was put back on a foundation where the high deficits became a fixable problem. And eventually, that’s exactly what happened.
Politics require compromise. I don’t have to like it, but I should be smart enough to accept it.

No, actually, Obama said:
“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.”
In fact, you can hear him say it here.
I can’t imagine that Sarah Palin gave the same speech with the same gaffe.

I am looking for the Speech. I know she said it, I never watched the memorial day crap for Obama, as I was up near Mt. Denali for a Veteran’s Motorcycle Memorial.
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?s=8267315 was when she did the speech.
You don’t have to believe me, but it was said by Sarah (close if not extremely simular) at the Memorial Site…

Palin has always governed with a consensus-based approach. What amazes me is that she’s been able to govern Alaska along conservative lines, whilst still gaining support from Democrats and independents for her major initiatives. She must have some real skill at convincing the opposition to see things her way, and/or Alaska Democrats must be more conservative than the lower-48 type.
She’s also good at using the bully pulpit because everyone knows that the populace is on her side. I bet she only has to mention that a particular legislator is holding things up, and that person gets a ton of letters/phone calls. I heard that Hollis “Gunny” French got hammered for his antics during the Tasergate thing.
