A short clip but a useful one, and not just because of the egregious double standard in the media’s sudden willingness to take a candidate’s command of policy on faith. I’ve been trying to figure out why Caroline’s appointment bugs me so much when, say, Beau Biden’s inevitable victory in Delaware two years from now doesn’t. It’s not the fact that she’s being named to the seat instead of having to campaign (although that certainly makes it worse); it’s that her credibility, such as it is, depends to a greater extent than any other nepotist’s on vacant assurances from famous/powerful people that she’s good enough for them and so, implicitly, should be good enough for us. Andrea Mitchell thinks she’s swell, Uncle Ted thinks she’s swell, The One thinks she’s swell, and I bet an awful lot of lefty socialites whose surnames would sound familiar think so too. It’s not that we’re being asked to accept Caroline because she’s an aristocrat, in other words, so much as we’re being asked to accept her because other aristocrats insist she’s qualified. No other Senator, with the possible exception of Teddy himself, would be so purely a creation of privilege.
The clip is almost redeemed by Harold Ford basically arguing that Congress is filled with morons, in which case what’s one more? Exit thought experiment: Speaking of egregious media double standards, try this one out with John McCain in the role of president-elect. Click the image to watch.

Obama is president-elect, Franken may soon be a Senator, Princess Caroline is on tap, the able leadership of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd is going to help us out of the economic “crisis”. But, what the heck, this is already going to be the most retarded Congress in US history, by a longshot. With our new Precedent about to start wreaking havoc from the Executive (mostly due to inaction and frozen policy, I would say, though every active move the idiot messiah tries to make will also be wrong and will cause major problems), we might as well make it as much of a joke as possible. Let’s go for a new Guiness record. Caroline Kennedy adds just the right amount of stupidity, frivolity, and incompetence to really make this Congress stand out in world history.

Andrea Mitchell is a political hack.
It’s not that we’re being asked to accept Caroline because she’s an aristocrat, in other words, so much as we’re being asked to accept her because other aristocrats insist she’s qualified.
Let’s be very clear about this, AP. There are no aristocrats in this country other than those who pretend to be such.
The Kennedys were just poor white trash like all the other immigrant groups who came to the US from Europe. They are not, and never will be, “aristocracy.”

Buchanan nailed it: Harriet Miers country. It’s an elegant argument because everyone (except W) believes that she was an abysmal choice for SCOTUS, and to be Miered is the height of insult. So, Mitchell’s weak defense of Caroline reminds us of W’s anemic attempts at defending of the indefensible. (Can we get a consensus that this is where W’s term in office jumped the shark?)
If we knew Caroline, indeed. Heck, if she knew what we thought of her…well, she wouldn’t be looking for political handouts.

Oh my AP, you had to bring up Andrea Mitchell. How I loathe her. This is the same lovely and tolerant and intelligent Andrea Mitchell who called the people of my region rednecks and inbred hillbillies (In case you’re not sure, she meant that we’re inbred hillbillies when she said that the area is ‘bordering on Appalachia’.). Ace mentioned her continuing disdain for blue-collar folks.
Listen Andrea, I’m not a fan, but you’re welcome anytime. I’ll make you some sweet tea and we can listen to ‘Redneck Woman’ and debate the merits of the free-market. You can try out my new 20 gauge. I feel the same way. I think it’s that while Beau is getting the seat because of his last name, he still has some sort of qualification (AG). Princess Caroline is getting in on last name alone. Zero qualifications. This isn’t like saying Obama has no qualifications to be POTUS. He has qualifications, just not enough for POTUS. The Princess has literally zero qualification for this office. Heck, even Uncle Ted had at least run a political campaign. And, as always, Mary Jo Kopechne is not available for comment.

Andrea Mitchell used to be a good journalist. I remember the Clinton Administration couldn’t stand her when she was White House correspondent for NBC and pressured the network to move her to another beat. (they did, she was switch to the State Department) Then something happened. Andrea got married to Alan Greenspan. She hasn’t been worth dog crap since.

I can pontificate about the issues.
A leader needs more than knowledge of issues. They need to be able to look at the given options and choose the best solution. They also need to be able to discern when the best solution hasn’t been presented yet and push for better answers. And, perhaps most importantly, they need to know when there is no solution and they should stay the heck out of it.
I can memorize every detail of a sculptor’s handbook but I still won’t be able to carve the David out of stone.
