Good news: Franken now leads by triple digits

posted at 2:56 pm on December 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

280 and counting. Not only is this fantastically depressing, it’s fantastically confusing: Franken’s picking up votes by the hundreds because the board’s currently examining ballots challenged by Coleman, i.e. ballots which most everyone thinks are Franken votes but which weren’t counted before because Coleman found some nit to pick about them. They’re not done with those, so expect the lead to grow further this afternoon. Game over for Norm? Nope — there are another 5,000 ballots to be reviewed next week that were initially challenged by one of the candidates and then unchallenged because the nit picked in each case was simply too stupid to waste everyone’s time on. How are those ballots expected to shake out? In Coleman’s favor — but probably not enough:

Specifically, I have Franken taking a lead of about 430 votes after all challenged ballots are processed this afternoon. This includes “blue folder” ballots flagged (mostly by the Coleman campaign) for special circumstances. The Canvassing Board ruled this morning that they will evaluate blue folder ballots based on the markings on the ballot only, and will not consider the special circumstances behind them, which are outside of its jurisdiction and instead the subject for a court challenge. As such, very few of these types of challenges are likely to be successful, at least in the immediate term. Coleman has significantly more blue folder challenges than Franken, and so this is likely to add to Franken’s total.

I then have Franken losing a net of about 385 ballots once withdrawn challenges are processed, as Franken has more withdrawn challenges that Coleman, most of which are Coleman ballots. This would leave him with a small surplus.

Net result predicted by Nate Silver: Franken by 40 to 70 votes. Except that it’s unclear whether Silver’s factoring in the 1,600 absentee ballots that were initially rejected by the board but now also have to be counted, per standards agreed upon by Coleman and Franken, according to the state supreme court’s ruling yesterday. Which means, notwithstanding Coleman’s team assuring us that all will be well in the end, we’re looking at total uncertainty until January at least.

Let’s find out just how many pessimists we have on this site. Poll prediction: Franken, 80/20.

Franken by just over 100 votes is my guess.

Franken. And the people of Minnesota who voted for him will deserve the embarrassment he will bring to the state.

The GOP needs to make a bigger stink out of this– screw it; fight it out in the courts tooth and nail. This ass-clown is out-and-out stealing the election like they did in WA state.

OutSTANDING! An already ethics challenged House of Lords Senate will have its already ethics challenged reputation lowered by seating a known crook while simultaneously reducing an already low aggregate IQ. On top of that, John F. (Kohn) Kerry is a better comedian that Al Franken.

So why exactly was Coleman challenging ballots that looked like Franken votes but weren’t counted? Let sleeping dogs lie, else the pig will win.

The circle is almost complete. Dodd, Franks, Franken, and Caroline Kennedy round it out nicely, with Dingy Harry at the helm. The only thing missing is when Blago nominates himself in Illinois, which may take a little time.

a capella on December 19, 2008 at 3:14 PM

Even if Coleman somehow squeaks this out, I’m afraid Dingy Harry will figure out a way not to seat him. After all the GOP, by their inherent nature, must be guilty of suppressing votes somewhere. Lizard People have a right to be heard too.

I’ve said it before: If I weren’t a Christian, this world would scare the Hell out of me! Senator Al Franken. President Obama. Secretary of State Clinton. If that’s not enough to tip your world sideways, wait till they actually take office!
But, as I said, I’m a Christian; though Man always confirms my pessimism, God is in charge, and all will be well.
Wait till Senator Al adds his voice to the other 99-they will have to come up with new math to figure out how low the Congressional approval numbers will go.

Doug on December 19, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Today we are seeing the results of hippiedom. They’ve grown older but their fascination with destroying the United States (uhh, “The Man”) has not dissipated.

So we see individuals like Franken, Pelosi, Kerry, the perpetual Kennedys, Schumer, Emanuel, Obama-as-grandfathered-in, Frank, Rangel (as grandfatheredly affiliated)…this is the product of Leftwing or Marxist/Communist infiltration (seriously) from the Sixties into our U.S. educational system. They’re now in their late adult lives and doing what they were indoctrinated to do, which is ruin “The Man.”

I can understand why the Democrats insist on counting and re-counting until they’ve discovered every last ballot hidden anywhere in America. Why I’ve even search my attic in order to help. But why do the Republicans give up the instant the vote count goes against them? Why can’t the Republicans also insist on continually re-counting the last pro-Democrat re-count until they go ahead? At least give it a try. It’s a tactic that seems to work for the Democrats.

Say what you will about Franken, and there is a lot to say, but the fact that this election was even close tells you how pathetic Coleman was as a Senator.

Very true. Of course this should finally put that nail in the coffin that the people respect it when a politician decides to cease negative campaigning. On the other hand hasn’t the vote total shifted by something like a thousand votes since election night? I mean the only options are that the former state of Minnesota efforts at counting the vote are a complete joke or the Dems blatantly stole this election. (Admittedly helped by Coleman keeping it close. As I’ve written before would it have killed him to just have a cute co-ed with a camera follow Franken around for a month or 2 before the election to capture a “Franken Moment” ? It worked against Allen and saunce for the gander.)
Anyway if I was the GOP I’d just harass him for the whole 6 years via any means.(Make his life a living hell, he certainly has it coming.)

Skywise on December 19, 2008 at 3:11 PM

The reason there was no dent in the counts over the past month is because the challenges weren’t being ruled on. Now they are, and that’s where the difference comes in. It is absolutely normal, statistically speaking, for a difference of this magnitude to come about. In fact, some statisticians predicted that this would happen right at the beginning of the process (maybe they’re in on the conspiracy somehow).

Ya know YYZ, you can’t possible be that dumb if you’ve been paying attention. Lott had some interesting reviews early on of the oddly skewed updates coming out even before the recount when they were still “finding” ballots. Now, I guess if you want to concede that a) liberal voters are just more stupid than non-liberal voters and need someone to interpret their ballots because the liberal voters can’t follow simple instructions or b) the Democrat is getting better results from the election board because it is partisan and favoring the challenged ballots in Franken’s favor then you might have a case to make.

AZfederalist on December 19, 2008 at 3:56 PM

chunderroad on December 19, 2008 at 4:11 PM

From the Star-Tribune numbers, so far they have resolved 843 Coleman challenges to 445 Franken challenges, meaning that there are probably more Franken challenges left to evaluate. The problem is, so far Franken is getting 81% of the Coleman challenges, and Coleman is only getting 57% of the Franken challenges. Is the Canvassing Board biased, or are Coleman’s challenges more frivolous than Franken’s?

There are still over 5,400 challenged ballots left to resolve, and it’s possible that Coleman could re-take the lead if most of the Franken challenges prove frivolous.

It should be noted that, prior to the resolution of the challenged ballots, the Coleman lead plus Franken challenges less Coleman challenges still had Coleman leading. Coleman needs to do better PERCENTAGE-WISE on winning Franken’s remaining challenges to pull this out.

Only about 19% of the challenged ballots have been counted so far, and 64% of them were Coleman challenges, meaning that if a lot of frivolous Franken challenges are still left to be evaluated, Coleman could come back.

If the Canvassing Board is honest…

Coleman’s campaign has pointed out the problems with the “found” votes, the double ballots, etc. but it hasn’t been loud enough. And, of course, the media hasn’t been playing that side of the story much.

IMO, the MN Supreme CT. ruling was the turning point. I hope Coleman can pull this out, but I really think it’s over. Hello Senator Franken!

Just look at Tim Pawlenty’s face in this picture and tell me you think he should ever have a leadership position in the Republican party. How can a Governor allow this to happen?

Because Pawlenty appointed two of the judges now serving on the Canvassing Board, and certainly still trusts them to do the right thing. Which isn’t the same thing as doing whatever it takes to win an election. Putting principle ahead of party is supposed to be a Republican virtue, but I guess I could be mistaken.

starfleet_dude on December 19, 2008 at 4:29 PM

I’m surprised it’s this close, really.
Coleman is loathed by the Minny Left for bolting the DFL and then winning the Minnesota Messiah’s (Wellstone) senate seat in 2002.
Plus the MN Sec of State is a way-connected ACORN guy and Ayers-like radical.
Final nail in Coleman’s coffin: same-day voter registration without ID; just another “registered voter” to vouch for you.
Franken hammered Coleman in the college and university areas of the state. I’m sure nobody voted twice…
Final thought: we North Star staters also elected Jesse Ventura and survived. He turned out to be a fool and alienated most everyone in the state by the time his term was through. Franken will do the same for the Donks on a national level.

I’m confused, were these votes counted on election day and then were challenged in the recount? It would seem that the standard being used to give Frnaken these Coleman challenged votes would help Coleman when Franken’s challenges are heard.

TexasDude on December 19, 2008 at 4:44 PM

YYZ on December 19, 2008 at 3:35 PM

The recount process itself is facially legitimate, and that’s why you aren’t hearing the campaigns cry foul right now. You’ll recall that the Coleman campaign DID cry foul immediately following the election when all these Al Franken votes magically re-appeared. But it doesn’t make any sense for Coleman to come out right now and say the election was stolen, because that would cause the recounters to look at him hostilly — not the outcome Coleman wants!

The problem is in the chain of custody BEFORE the recount board took possession of the ballots — i.e. the hundreds of Al Franken votes that magically appeared from various polling places and the other hinky crap that was going on. That’s where the fix was put in.

Outlander on December 19, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Not only is this fantastically depressing, it’s fantastically confusing: Franken’s picking up votes by the hundreds because the board’s currently examining ballots challenged by Coleman, i.e. ballots which most everyone thinks are Franken votes but which weren’t counted before because Coleman found some nit to pick about them.

I don’t understand why they are not reviewing the ballots “blind.” In a social science experiment, the people doing the assessments would not know the source of the “sample” to avoid bias in their results. The same should have been the case here.

The main thing is, though, this should all be done digitally so there is a way to permanently archive what they’re doing and ensure consistency. The ballots should be digitized, the markings that are being interpreted should be highlighted on the digital images and coded based on the rationale (ie: disqualified based on… stray mark, smudge, tear, etc), and then the original digital images should be assessed by a different team of judges for consistency.

Instead running ads about Blago, the RNC should have been hitting the airwaves with this. It sure looks like Franken is about to steal this election.

I hope he runs for senate majority leader.
I hope he holds press conferences daily to hold the liberal jagofs accountable to the looney left.
Will the leadership be able to keep him in check if he gets in there? Or will he sell out to the whack jobs that put him in office like Obama is going to do?
Enquiring minds want to know!

Eh, we get the government we deserve. Might as well have a clown with a penchant for violence in the Senate.

When Franken takes his seat in the Senate, conservatism is officially dead.

I told this story here before and I’ll say it one more time. I saw this ass-clown down in Camp Udairi Kuwait when I waiting to go back into Iraq. He put on a show for the troops whose only purpose was to pit the Reserve and National Guard soldiers against the Active duty. He showed a regular Interceptor Body Armor vest and said it was the Active Duty version and then he wore a trash can lid on his chest and said it was the model for the Reserve and National Guard. He was booed in the show I saw. Loudly.

If he actually wins this Senate seat, the state of Minnesota is dead to me. They’re not Americans and they don’t exist.
