But she’s a princess!

posted at 11:00 am on December 19, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The normally sensible Ed Koch indulged in some revealing Kennedy gushing yesterday to support the idea that Governor David Paterson should appoint a novice to the US Senate on the basis of her last name.  He urged Paterson to “think of the DNA” as a qualifier for selecting Caroline Kennedy as a replacement for Hillary Clinton in the US Senate (via Q&O):

Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch told CBS 2 HD he was won over after she called him and asked to talk about the office.

“When you look at her, and you know what the Kennedy’s are capable of and you know the family she comes from … think of the DNA,” Koch said.

At one time, and it’s starting to seem like a long time ago, Americans eschewed the idea that certain people deserved a life of privilege because of their pedigree.  This country has never recognized a system of nobility, certainly not in the manner Koch and others have suggested over the last couple of weeks stewing over Caroline Kennedy’s quest for a sinecure.  We have always heralded the fact that our system allows people of modest origins to achieve on the basis of talent, determination, and hard work — all of which are antithetical to the kind of royalty Koch inadvertently endorses here.

After all, what basis did absolute monarchs claim credibility?  They saw themselves anointed by God as descendants of previous rulers.  Power was in their DNA, too.

Jonah Goldberg blasts the Sweet Caroline gushers:

One could say without fear of overstating things that the liberal reaction to the inexperienced Caroline has been somewhat more gracious than the reaction to the “inexperienced” Palin. Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post has devoted two columns in as many weeks to this “fairy tale” scenario in which Kennedy, our “tragic national princess,” is finally rewarded — for her years of quiet dignity, selflessly avoiding scandal and the paparazzi — with the Senate seat that once belonged to her uncle Bobby. What’s astounding about the normally sensible Marcus’s case for “the Cinderella Kennedy” (New York magazine’s phrase) is that she doesn’t really make one, at least not on the merits. Marcus doesn’t even bother. It’s all schoolgirl gushing.

The editors of the New York Times, in a more skeptical editorial, summarized her qualifications thusly: “Ms. Kennedy has much going for her. As a public figure, she carries the glamour and poignancy of her family …” The editors then went on to describe what great liberals her dad and uncles were. That’s it.

This a perfect example of the bowel-stewing self-indulgence of elite liberalism.

Kathleen Parker, fresh off of her eviscerations of Sarah Palin for her inexperience and unreadiness, denies that she’s applying a double standard — and again falls back on DNA:

In Kennedy’s case, those actors would be senators, not heads of other, potentially belligerent, nations. If appointed, she would be a single vote among 100 and otherwise a placeholder until 2010, when she would have to run for election as any other.

Palin, who one could argue was similarly anointed — cynically selected without proper vetting — was headed for much bigger business. As vice president, she would have been a heartbeat away from The Button, though she would not have been “in charge of the U.S. Senate,” as she told a child who asked what the vice president does.

Critics on the other side of the political aisle may have had other reasons to oppose Palin (such as her pro-life position), but the loyal opposition was firmly based on substantive concerns about competence, as well as wariness about her tone and temperament, which became increasingly divisive.

Palin’s demonstrated lack of basic knowledge, her intellectual incuriosity, her inability to articulate ideas or even simple thoughts all combined to create an impression of not-quite-there.

So the Senate isn’t important enough to demand someone qualified — or at least someone who deigns to answer press questions about it?  The WCBS report linked above reports mainly on the frustration from the media about how the political princess with all that terrific DNA won’t answer questions.  How’s that for tone, temperament, and substance?  Palin spoke with the press and actually ran something other than a typewriter for several years, serving in government for more than a decade.

And I’d suggest that Kathleen check the Constitution.  The Vice President actually does preside over the US Senate, even if that practice has fallen out of custom in the last few decades. Article I, section 3.  You can look it up.

If Caroline Kennedy wants to be a Senator, then she should run for the office and try to convince voters to support her by engaging in the political process, not demand an appointment to avoid the hoi polloi.  Paterson has a constitutional duty to appoint the most qualified person to the seat, not the person who can raise the most money for Democrats.  None of the Sweet Caroline Gushing Choir can point to a single qualification (other than DNA) that Kennedy has in greater quantity than the hundreds of New Yorkers who have already involved themselves in the political process and who could actually hit the ground running in Washington DC.

Appointing a candidate to the US Senate on the basis of their last name alone is more than just a betrayal of that duty to act in the best interest of New York.  In a significant way, it goes against everything America is supposed to represent.  Ed Koch and David Paterson should know better, and the media gushers should as well.  Will New York start issuing titles of nobility to their dynastic clans as well?

Meh. Our government has been turned into a sad joke. The proliferation of retards, fools, and criminals has reached a critical level. Might as well throw the aging princess in the mix. Frivolity is the call of the day.

What is it with New York’s willingness to give a US Senate seat to the wife of a former president, the brother of a former president, and now a daughter of a former president. Don’t they ever consider qualifications?!?!?

I really can’t believe they’d do this. I’m sick of being constantly reminded of their double standard.

Before Palin, it was “experience doesn’t matter; judgment does.” Then when Obama’s judgment was revealed to be less than stellar, that was excused, just cause. Then with Palin, suddenly experience mattered, only Obama was still good cause he’d been running for president for a year.

And now this!

vcferlita on December 19, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Paterson has a constitutional duty to appoint the most qualified person to the seat, not the person who can raise the most money for Democrats.

Problem with New York is the most qualified person (on the ‘D’ side — the governor’s not naming an ‘R’ to the job) is probably some upstate rep with zero name recognition. Patterson’s realistic choices are a bunch of career hacks from the metro NYC area who have nothing to recommend themselves except for the fact that they’re recognized slightly in the NYC media, but not enough to keep Chuckie Shumer from finally becoming the state’s highest-profile senator (Carolyn Maloney? Why? Because the East Coast doesn’t have it’s own Patty Murray or Barbara Boxer in the Senate?)

If there was a career politician on the Democratic side in the state who wanted the job and had some iota of a decent record, the Caroline bandwagon would look even more vapid that in does now. New York State’s Republican Party is a mess, but it’s not like the state’s Democratic Party is churning out a bunch of hard-working statesmen — They get elected for the most part because they have a ‘D’ after their name and the voters in their district would rather pull the lever for Osama than cast a ballot for a Republican, but there’s nothing in their resume to overcome the Kennedy worshipers’ rationale that JFK’s daughter is a better choice because she can raise a lot of campaign $$$.

What’s so offensive to me is that Parker is belittling a conservative who actually got off her behind and ran for office — first local office and then governor. If we want to change this country and keep conservatism alive, we need people who are willing to actually do something. Palin is a doer. She doesn’t opine about the sorry state of our country, she works to change it. She didn’t have a political father or a wealthy husband or all the patronage and networking that comes with an Ivy League degree. She rose to the top all on her own.

When “conservative” writers throw Sarah Palin under the bus, they’re piling on the conservative grassroots — the citizen politicians who decide to run for office and take on the political patricians who in recent years have destroyed our country.

One of those patricians was actually a man I respected, though I disagreed with him. I’m talking about George Herbert Walker Bush. I’m reminded of the words he said during one of his debates in 1988:

…anybody that gets into this political arena and has to face you guys everyday deserves a word of praise. Because it’s gotten a little ugly out there. It’s gotten a little nasty. It’s not much fun sometimes….I salute those who participate in the political process. Sam Raybum had a great expression on this. He said here were all these intellectuals out there griping and complaining and saying it was negative coverage. Rayburn says, yeah, and that guy never ran for sheriff either.

Sarah Palin has “run for sheriff.” Christopher Buckley, Peggy Noonan, George Will, Kathleen Parker, Christopher Hitchens, et al. have not.

The really sad thing is that if her brother were still alive, he would be the automatic candidate, with even less public service experience than Caroline.

People are forgetting that David Paterson owes nothing to the Kennedys. He has his own power base in Brooklyn. I would frankly love it if he appointed Al Sharpton to that seat. Why not a black senator from New York? The Senate just lost its only black member, but it has plenty of women and a few of them are rich Democrats. Or perhaps Rep. Nydia Velasquez – the Senate also lost one of its two Latino members with Sen. Salazar appointed to the cabinet.

Why would David Paterson use this opportunity to appoint a rich white woman to a seat that could be given to a minority?

The only things “HRH Princess Caroline Kennedy” has in common with “royalty” is that she is a “freeloader” and is {meow, maybe!?! – but the truth hurts) heinously ugly.

Caroline Kennedy is not qualified to be anything other than a Junior League mentor. Period.

Btw, it just shows how bare the American cabinet is in people who want to be “citizen-legislators”/small business people with ethics vs. those who desire to be“Washingtonians” {homage to Rush and his Awesome! labeling of those who want to “fit in in D. “exit statement” — y’know the only thing at this point that would make this remotely worthwhile? patterson appointing someone else — the entertainment value immediately goes THROUGH.THE.ROOF.

The Kennedys aren’t the only East-Coast based dynasty around.

look up the word…Or better yet lobotomy.

MDWNJ on December 19, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Her grandfather & bootlegger, “Uncle Joe” Kennedy, made his daughter have a lobotomy so be careful of putting “lobotomy” with a Kennedy.

Look it up – Ted Kennedy’s sister had a lobotomy because her father was at a loss how his own off spring was not perfect. Thus, that lead to the “Special Olympics.” just an fyi

Have a great weekend everyone. Hope no one is freezing too much during all this global warming/climate change weather.

Branch Rickey on December 19, 2008 at 12:09 PM

On Caroline Kennedy (D-Camelot):

“The English House of Lords has long been derided as a collection of long-winded, bilious blowhards, the children, grandchildren and fifth cousins, once removed, of noblemen who once did something to curry favor with a long-dead King.

The House of Lords looks like the greatest assemblage of deep thinkers and philosophers the world has ever seen, when compared to the collection of feckless crapweasels who bloviate on the floor of our Senate.”

Gee, I wish I’d written that.

warbaby on December 19, 2008 at 12:10 PM

I like Goldberg’s point about how journalists practically called Palin a Nazi and, well, Kennedy’s grandDad was good pals with the Nazis….

Of course, in the gushing over the Kennedys, journalists seem to neglect that tiny little point….

I told you. This thread is not about Booosh. This thread is about Caroline Kennedy and her family.

Why the fixation? He’s leaving office. She may be attaining a important Senate seat without being elected by the people. Quite trying to deflect the issue.

Imperfect solution to a problem.

Quoting Chappaquiddick too cheap for you?

We could probably all agree – no more Kennedys, Bidens, Bushes, or McCains.

“faraway on December 19, 2008 at 12:17 PM”

i could prolly live with that …

jmo, but it’s the whole appointment thing that bothers me most. if the new yawkers are stupid enough to elect her, well, so be it, but for patterson to say “yabba dabba doo, here’s yer new senator!” would be rather grating if i were so unfortunate as to live in that hellhole …

They’re reporting that the Princess hasn’t found the time to vote much over the last 20 years.

Blake on December 19, 2008 at 12:21 PM

What is it with New York’s willingness to give a US Senate seat to the wife of a former president, the brother of a former president, and now a daughter of a former president. Don’t they ever consider qualifications?!?!?

rbb on December 19, 2008 at 11:09 AM”

Obviously not, they elected Clinton and keep sending that scumbag Schumer back to the Senate.

Is it possible to jail the entire MSM for prostitution?

oldleprechaun on December 19, 2008 at 11:29 AM

I hear Gitmo will be available soon. Let them be reporters and live the real-life “torture” of Gitmo.

Just a humble suggestion.

Branch Rickey on December 19, 2008 at 12:26 PM

If the people of New York want to be represented by a celebrity trust fund baby, hoorah for them. New York is well on its way to running their government into the ground. How can one of the richest states in the richest country in the world resort to taxing diet coke as a part of a fiscal plan. I say let the degeneration continue at a faster funnier pace please!

Nozzle on December 19, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Meant taxing “non diet soda”.

cheers,

Nozzle on December 19, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Palin… would not have been “in charge of the U.S. Senate,” as she told a child who asked what the vice president does.

The role of the Vice President has changed over the last two centuries, and is never quite the same from one incumbent to the next. That said, if the Vice President does anything at all, he or she is president of the Senate. “In charge of” is easier for young children to grasp than “presides over.”

manwithblackhat on December 19, 2008 at 12:34 PM

“think of the dna”. OK.

Philanding, horrible judgement, ability to get us into a nuclear war, ability to get us into a new Vietnam, willingness to abandon soldiers invading on a beach, nepotist, murderer, alchoholism, drug addiction, rape.

Sounds like the perfect Democrat allright!!!

notagool on December 19, 2008 at 12:34 PM

And speaking of DNA, let’s talk about Richard Daley’s.

Does the Senate GOP vote to seat this woman or do they send a signal? With individuals like McCain, Specter, the Maine Rinos, etc. Kennedy will be given a coronation.
