Biden: Pass Obama’s massive stimulus plan or an economic meteor will hit Earth

posted at 7:18 pm on December 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

Either there really are doomsday indicators circulating in Democratic circles or they’re coordinating exceptionally well to panic the public into giving The One whatever he wants, because we’re hearing more of this every day. First there were the anonymous murmurs from inside the transition team about the economy looking vastly worse than they’d anticipated. Then came David Obey this morning ranting how close we are to falling into a “massive, massive hole” unless Bush passes a giant spending package right this instant. And now here’s Greasy Joe, ducking and covering unless we hand Obama upwards of a trillion dollars to save the world:

“The economy is in much worse shape than we thought it was in,” Biden told me during an exclusive interview — his first since becoming vice president-elect — to air this Sunday on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

“There is no short run other than keeping the economy from absolutely tanking. That’s the only short run,” Biden told me…

“Every single person I’ve spoken to agrees with every major economist. There is going to be real significant investment, whether it’s $600 billion or more, or $700 billion, the clear notion is, it’s a number no one thought about a year ago,” he said.

In fairness, Nouriel “Dr. Doom” Roubini also thinks at least a $500 billion stimulus is needed to keep things moving as private consumption evaporates. Does the increasingly alarmist rhetoric make it more or less likely to happen, though? As a pessimist, I’m supposed to eat this stuff up and even I’m getting panic fatigue. Every Democratic setback comes with a fresh whiff of disaster, even as Rahm Emanuel’s running around telling people what a sweet opportunity all this is for the left “to do things that you could not do before.” I thought we elected Cool Hand Luke because he doesn’t sweat when things get tough or resort to the politics of fear, an especially useful trait given that part of the economic slump is due to a crisis of confidence. How confident do you feel after reading Biden’s comments?

Read Irwin Stelzer’s piece in the Standard on the blank check we’re about to hand Obama — and how the economic forecasts really might be as dire as everyone fears. Exit question: Is it okay to yell “fire” in a crowded theater if there really is a fire?

Liberals are going to use this as an excuse to permanently expand government. The GOP has to oppose a massive spending stimulus every step of the way. If they don’t, then what is the point of having a Republican Party?

Read Irwin Stelzer’s piece in the Standard on the blank check we’re about to hand Obama — and how the economic forecasts really might be as dire as everyone fears. Exit question: Is it okay to yell “fire” in a crowded theater if there really is a fire?

Is the “fire” being caused by the economic proposals of the incoming Obama Administration or is there really a “fire” and the Obama team’s economic proposals really will put it out?

As you mentioned, much of this crisis has been caused by yelling “fire” (recession) for years now, when it was not true. So, at this point, it comes across to me as ‘the boy who cried wolf’. I already do not trust Democrats and believe they relish this ‘crisis’ in order to push through socialist and big government control policies. They have been lying about the economy for years now under President Bush and have been quite open about their intentions to want to take advantage of this ‘crisis’ to push through their failed policies.

What I want to know is (1) is this really a crisis or more of the Democrats crying wolf and (2) if this *is* a true crisis, will the Democrats failed policy proposals make it worse, and, if so, would it be better to just let the economy be bad and recover in due time (and not allow Obama a blank check), but not worse (allowing Obama and the Democrats socialists a blank check for whatever they want)

Michael in MI on December 19, 2008 at 7:28 PM

I really hate to say it, but I think the sky actually is falling this time. Obama changed his tune drastically since he had that meeting w/ W right after the election and he looks like he’s aged a few years. He’s also back to chain smoking. Not to mention, the numbers actually add up. Our deficit, the job losses, the holiday shopping returns, T-bill trades, oil prices, the rollercoaster market, etc. I think Bush is actually doing the whole “not on my watch” thing. He’s just trying to keep the country alive long enough for him to jump out the window as the fan gets royally soiled as soon as Bambi gets into the house.

Let’s just go ahead and get the disaster started so we can get it over with. All these delays are getting old.

Here’s what you do AP: Take Obama’s stimulus money and go buy some canned food, a rifle and ammo, gas, a tent, and a good sleeping bag and head for the hills to ride it out Unabomber style (skip the bomb building part though). I disagree. This may have been a factor of timing, but it didn’t create the underlying problems in our economy that led us here. There’s no doubt that there was a housing and credit bubble.

Michael in MI on December 19, 2008 at 7:28 PM

I think it’s option #2 and yes, they’re going to make it worse. They think you can fix anything by just throwing money at it. Oddly enough, that’s what got us in this mess, and the money we’re throwing at it is not really worth too much anymore. The good/bad news is, the rest of the world looks to be in the same/worse shape. Here’s looking toward a really good 2010 election season.

Mark1971 on December 19, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Obama will peel off GOP votes (and keep the red state/Blue Dog Dems in line) by:

1) putting projects in every member’s district or state that they would be hard pressed to reject;

2) using the database of email addresses and phone numbers to have the faithful swarm a recalcitrant senator or rep the same way Stanley Kurtz’ phone interview on his Obama book in Chicago was swarmed.

It will take a great deal of discipline and solidarity for the GOP to oppose this, and some great communication skills to explain it to peoople. Sadly, the GOP has neither right now.

Vice President-Elect Joe Biden said the U.S. economy is in danger of “absolutely tanking” and will need a second stimulus package in the $600-billion to $700-billion range

.

……… and of course, after it passes like the current “various bail out packages”, there will be no oversight, no accountability as to where the money is going, no guard against spending on pork, no guard against graft, corruption, greed, and those who will write the law, a Democratic Congress, will feign indignation and outrage when someone asks…………..

….. “where is all the money going?”

Seven Percent Solution on December 19, 2008 at 7:45 PM

This may have been a factor of timing, but it didn’t create the underlying problems in our economy that led us here. There’s no doubt that there was a housing and credit bubble.

FloatingRock on December 19, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Well, I agree there were some core problems which led to this, however, I also know that the Democrats worked in partner with the mass media to freak people out about the economy being “the worst since the Great Depression!!!!111!!!!” since 2004. I remember them painting the economy as horrible and in recession when Kerry was running for President. And they haven’t stopped with all the gloom and doom since, no matter that the numbers said otherwise.

Plus, as to the core problems with the housing market, the Democrats’ policies were responsible for much of that. They caused the problem and then denied there was any problem when they were called before Congress. Then they had the audacity to blame it all on the GOP.

So I just sit there and wonder what the flying f*ck is going on here. Did a major political party, along with the help of the mass media, *deliberately* sink the American – and the world – economy for the sake of political power gain? That’s what it seems like to me.

What further pisses me off is that I just got laid off from my job yesterday, 1 week after our company said we were doing fine and handed out Christmas bonuses. Apparently we lost a bunch of POs (purchase orders) from our Number 1 customer (Caterpillar), because they were freaked out about the economy. So in a matter of two days, I went from looking forward to seeing my family in Chicago for the first time in a year and spending a nice, happy Christmas with seeing everyone, to now being completely depressed and a little pissed off, with all this uncertainty about what the flying f*ck is going on with the economy.

M in M, keep the faith take heart things’ll work out. The mainbody of the American economy works, and we will if anything wind up the better as a nation for the more pain we endure during this price reset. Your company is suffering from the severely distorted pricing and commerce flow artificially cheap credit has led to.

The best thing the nation could do would be to go through an 80% government shutdown for a year or so and a severe tax cut with targeted cuts towards the death tax, a total retirement of the idiotic IRS rules on taxability of social security income based on outside income on retirees and a few other tweaks.

The sad fact is we may need to endure “son of FDR” for half a decade before people get it through their heads that the answer to a credit trap is to pay down the damn debtload and allow prices to reflect market realities not artificial perception.

It’s possible, but I think it’s more likely that they’re just buffoons that don’t have a clue how the world works because they live in la la land. I think your right that the media was trying to harm the Bush administration with their constant doom and gloom and probably weren’t smart enough to realize, or didn’t care, what the consequences might be. But the government created the underlying conditions, not the media… though, having constantly advocated left wing policies and positions, they aren’t blameless.

It’s very difficult, and I don’t underestimate that for a moment. However, keep what I said, above, in your strong mind, look hard for a new job, and don’t voice your political opinions to those who do the recruiting. You will find that a new place values you more and you will say, hopefully soon enough, “it’s the best that could have happened”. I know that is easier for me to write than for you to do, but I also know that it will work out that way. I have no use for ‘leaders’ who do this kind of stuff, and I’m a tough one when it comes to handling loafers.

sven10077 on December 19, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Thanks, sven10077. I don’t want to complain too much. I spent all yesterday reworking my MS Money budget and calculated that I can survive until the end of February on what I have now and the unemployment insurance I can receive ($362/week). And then until the end of March if I get my tax returns asap. But beyond that, I will be screwed if my company doesn’t take me back or I don’t find another job. My company told us all that they are treating these as layoffs, even though they are techincally terminating us, in order for us to receive our unemployment faster (apparently there is a longer delay if you file as laid off instead of fired). So there is a chance that if Caterpillar decides to go ahead with the POs after the beginning of the year and then we get another PO from a military company up here at our Aerospace/Defense office in Michigan, we could all be brought back soon after the new year. But, of course, nothing is certain. I like my job and what I do (product engineering CAD designer/engineering consultant), so I would greatly like to remain with my company, but I also can’t wait too long. It would just be nice to have some grasp on the truth about the state of the economy so I know whether or not to seriously look for another job and possibly sell my house and move, or feel a little confident that my company will get those POs, because the economy is not as bad as many companies seem and they are just taking drastic measures now out of panic, but will come to their senses after the new year.

BTW, I’m sorry to hear about your job.

CyberCipher on December 19, 2008 at 8:12 PM

Thank you, I appreciate that. As I mentioned above, I should be okay until the end of February, so I am not in as bad of shape as many around the country, and I don’t feel right complaining based on that. At the same time, this is the first time this has happened to me in my 10 year career and it’s a little unnerving. Plus being away from all my family, who are in Chicago, and being single, so having no one to come home to (as many of my laid off coworkers have, as they are married and have their family here in Michigan), I feel even more unnerved than usual, as I feel more alone than usual.

But, hey, whatever doesn’t kill one makes one stronger and it is in times of crisis that the true measure of man is known so… here’s my chance to see what I am made of.

Biden is getting a second puppy.

The only way he gets in the news is when he makes a big gaffe or gets a puppy.

Having just had a client I was depending on shut down this week — for reasons very much to do with the “auto crash,” and before sending me the latest check owed — I sympathize, and will be spending an equally scaled-back holiday here.

Somehow, having someone say “those bastards don’t deserve you” or “things will get better” doesn’t really help much. Can’t think of why that might be….

So far, GWB, Congress and Hank “in the tank” Paulson have done a damn good job of seeing that their high-roller pals are set for nice, soft landings.

The rest of us? Hell, we’re the “rich” that Osama Obama plans to tap to help the truly needy….

MiM, I’m also sorry to hear about the loss of your job, but only to a point. A company that lays off good employees, for any reason, this close to Christmas, is not worth your talents and dedication.

Maybe this is naive, but I honestly believe that my company just had no choice, as they were screwed by Caterpillar, which decided not to agree to some POs (Purchase Orders) at the last minute and ended up laying off a bunch of people of their own, in addition to the people my company had on-site there. Caterpillar is our biggest customer, so it really screwed us. They had just given us all Christmas bonuses last Monday, and then Caterpillar dropped this on the company this past Monday and then Tue-Wed-Thu is when we found out about the layoffs. Again, maybe I am naive to believe their word, but my company has been good through ups and downs in the past 10 years I have worked there and always treated me well and this is the first time they have had to have layoffs. So I tend to believe they were screwed by Caterpillar and had no choice. That said, the one thing that is pissing me off the more I think about it is that I had the most seniority in my office here in Michigan and I was laid off along with the new hires from this past year, while some others who have less time with the company, including one who was just hired this year, kept their jobs. I made a lot of money for the company over the past 10 years working on-site at Ford and I guess that didn’t mean much when it came to layoff time. But, what am I gonna do, ya know? I’m not one to cry about stuff being not fair and say they should layoff employee X instead of me.

It is easier to write, but I have done the same thing myself when giving advice to others. :) My coworker who was laid off with me, he told me the same thing. He passed along what his mom told him about “when one door closes, many others open”. And he kept saying that he was originally angry and down, but now was feeling great, because he sees this as a great opportunity for us. I see is that way too. I’m just worried, because I only have until the end of February before I am in a huge financial mess. I’m wishing now that I had not moved out of my apartment into my house in 2003, because I would have a lot more in savings right now and a lot less to pay in rent vs mortgage. But oh well. We’ll see what happens!

7%, I noticed late that you also lost a job, and wish you only the best in a speedy search for a good new one. Same applies to you, as to MiM. You’re both great people and don’t deserve ratbastards like these to benefit from your talents and efforts.

Entelechy on December 19, 2008 at 8:26 PM

I didn’t realize sevenpercent lost his/her job as well. I’m sorry to hear that and wish you the best of luck in all this too. It’s never a good time to lose one’s job, but even more difficult at the holidays. I do hope though that you can lean on family and friends through this time to ease the difficulty of it all.

Michael in MI on December 19, 2008 at 8:46 PM

MrScribbler on December 19, 2008 at 8:42 PM

I’m sorry to hear that, MrScribbler. Really. And I believe that is what happened to my company as well. The CEOs are not bad people, I have talked to them personally. During down times in the past, they went out of their way to actually eat pay decreases they were passed down at Ford to all contracters and they are always looking for the best companies with whom to go for our medical and dental benefits. Not to mention our 401(k)s. So I really do think they had a bunch of POs fall through with Caterpillar, which they had been counting on for next year, and it hit them out of the blue and had no choice but to have layoffs for the first time.

And yeah, hearing others prop us up and denigrate our companies for doing what they did, doesn’t really ease the pain at all, but I know people mean well. There’s nothing really anyone can say to make anything better, so I understand.

Steel, but one thing you can’t do is wait and hope for what that company, no matter how good, and no matter what they said, will do. You must get that resume updated and work all options very hard.

MrScribbler on December 19, 2008 at 8:42 PM

One thing that doesn’t help at all is to sit and wait, while feeling sorry for ourselves, and hoping for things to get better, or for the old company to call us back. Change is often good, but we don’t see it at the time. Not fighting with you MrScribbler, just observing.

We are all gonna die if we dont save AIG.
We are all gonna die if we dont pass that stimulus.
We are all gonna die if we dont bail out Fannie Mac.
We are all gonna die if Paulsen doesn get $700B NOW.
We are all gonna die if we don’t bail out the Big Three.

Heh, that was the very first thing I did when I got home from work on Thursday morning (I worked 3rd shift)… update my resume on Monster.com and make it active and then looked up everything on unemployment and got everything together to apply. The nice thing is that we can apply online now without having to wait in line at the unemployment office. Gotta try to see the positives in times like these. heh

It is not so surprising to me that Samuel Clemens hated politicians.
No, what surprises me is that the reasons he hated them would only become more clear to the rest of us as time moved on.

I thought he didn’t come out of his hole until February 2 to see if he can see his shadow.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on December 19, 2008 at 9:21 PM

yes there is a problem. No $1 trillion is not going to fix it. If Obama wants to help the economy have a tax holiday of all taxes for say 6 months to a year. You got you $1trillion but instead of the gov throwing it had their fav projects you will have 100million taxpayers using their money on what they want to from paying off bills to buying the new VG.

Joe Biden should shut up and not talk about things that he has no clue about – and I say this as some one who thinks that he is a decent guy who means well, even if he has now become a caricature.

There was a time when i backed Biden for President – i shiver at my momentary stupidity, after seeing his performance on the campaign stump – he was the worst candidate out there and the MSM covered up for him by going after Sarah Palin.

I have no respect for Obama but i hope he can serve his term out – the thought of President Joe Biden scares the HELL out of me.

Question: do we have one single scrap of historical evidence that government “stimulus” spending has ever helped the economy?
Or are we just doing the same thing over and over expecting different results?

Any stimulus package coming from these spendtastic “Representatives” of ours is bound to be so pork-laden that the Islamic world (piss be upon them) will shudder and convulse in horror. So any benefit will be offset or overshadowed by more long-term damage.

Spending our way to oblivion….

hillbillyjim on December 19, 2008 at 9:46 PM

Either there really are doomsday indicators circulating in Democratic circles or they’re coordinating exceptionally well to panic the public into giving The One whatever he wants,

Three guesses AP, and the first two don’t count.

A perpetual crisis (real or not) is an essential ingredient for a fascist government – something the hard left dreams to force on America.

We’re hiring people in every state plus Canada. If you have the courage to be an independent business owner offering products that people want, need and will have sooner or later without a large outlay of cash. If you like people and are willing to work, you can find work and eventually be better off than you were.

I was an assembly line worker for Chrysler before I was laid off years ago. If I can do it, anyone can.

I want to know when my neighbor is going to take down their Obama/Biden sign :(
It was broken for a while and then the other day they didn’t take it down like I hoped, they actually went out and fixed it–I wonder what they’ll do when the snow piles up over it and you can’t read it anymore.
Really why is it still up. I get it. He won.

The way our society is today, even if we could have preserved the living heads of all of histories greats, they would probably sit around in an empty vault somewhere just collecting dust while everybody watches TV—well, except Nixon.

Here’s the funny part. All of the things Dems accuse Republicans of doing, THEY actually DO. aka fear tactics, false emergencies and soforth. So get ready for a ton of more disinformation, ‘I didn’t have sexual relations’ and ‘do this or else’ scenarios. Just wonderful.
