Alaska Senate poll: Palin 55, Murkowski 31
posted at 6:31 pm on December 19, 2008 by Allahpundit
Via the Standard. The bad news? It’s a dKos poll. The good news? Kos’s pollster ain’t half bad.
Good thing for Murkowski that she and Palin aren’t rivals, aside from the occasional preemptive declaration of war.
Palin would crush Daddy’s Little Girl in a primary. Remember, Lisa Murkowski was appointed to the seat by her father when he was elected to his ill-fated term as governor. Palin’s successful primary challenge to father Murkowski was aided in great part by the backlash to that nepotism. The voters passed a ballot initiative stripping the governor of the power to make such appointments in the future. So given a credible Republican challenger, Murkowski melts.
Since Palin vanquished Murkowski’s father, there would be some poetry to also taking out his daughter, but I suspect Murkowski would be vulnerable to other top Republicans. I’d guess at this point that even if Palin passes on the Senate, Murkowski will have to fight for her party’s nomination.
She wins in a waltz in the general election too, of course. I’ve made the case before why, contrary to popular wisdom, it could be a good move for her, but it makes more sense if she’s planning to skip the presidential race in 2012 and build her national cred for a run four years later instead of trying to bounce from governor to Senator to president in the span of two years. Surprisingly enough, we haven’t polled this one yet. Have at it.

The only reason Murkowski is so high is because Alaskans recognize the name.
jimmy the notable on December 19, 2008 at 6:40 PM
No point in wasting her in the Senate. That’s a lost cause anyway, and belonging to the same club as Franken and Caroline Kennedy doesn’t do much for her resume. Let her season and ripen, then see where we are in 2016. Can she only serve 2 terms as Guv?

Why is Kos even polling this? To try to egg Palin into running?

Falling oil prices and Alaskans’ payment next year. Let’s see how popular she is then.

Remain governor in 2010

They are terrified of her and likely scared shi*less that she will win.
Frankly, I’d love to see the donks now make the argument she is somehow underqualified to be a Senator given “sweet Caroline”…
sven10077 on December 19, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Young defeated Parnell for the nomination by 0.28%. This polls gives Young — not even sworn in for his next term — a 6% advantage for the primary in 2 years. A month later gives him a 5.8% gain?
amerpundit on December 19, 2008 at 6:45 PM
She’ll have like 10 kids by then.
And Piper will almost be ready for office by then, too :P
I don’t think she is running though, for a national office, ever again. I called it after the election and I’m sticking to it.

I’m curious lorien…is there any politician you do approve of?
I think the only way she can win is if she turns the media’s visceral hatred of her into a positive. She needs to humiliate them, somehow.

Politicians, at best, are tolerable. So, do I approve of any? Not really.
Palin is more tolerable than others. But whatcha want? Me to jump through hoops over a poll in Dec 2008 about a 2010 or 2012 election?
I’d rather make with the funny!
And, yep, I’ll stick to my prediction that she’ll never run for a national public office again.
lorien1973 on December 19, 2008 at 6:53 PM
She put money away for that contingency. She’ll look even better next year to Alaskans.

Kini on December 19, 2008 at 6:57 PM
I’ve got no problem with that. These days, there’s something suspicious about anybody who would want to go into politics. I’m not exactly jumping through hoops over anything either…I’ve got no faith that anybody elected will ever remotely cater to the things that I care about (Keeping the amount of money the federal government spends over four years the same would completely shock me), so even if Palin is some kind of savior for us, there’s no way the rest of the crooks would ever let her do anything meaningful anyway.

Senators are never very good presidents, nor do they win often. Keep her in the governor’s seat for now.
MadisonConservative on December 19, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Sarah will run in 2012 because Obama will be a disaster with the help of congress and senate democrats.
Not to mention there must be some corruptive activities in and other things in Obama’s closet that might come out. Chicago is not a clean city.
Also, conservatives stayed home this election season. 2010 and 2012 might change things if republicans find their conservative ways.
jencab on December 19, 2008 at 7:00 PM
Governors makes better president candidate then Senator. If Republicans have a chance they should pick a governor over senator even if Sarah is a Senator who is running for president. So Sarah should keep the governor job because that is the only way Republicans win over dems. Senators DO NOT WIN, Governors DO. Just ask Dole, McCain, Kerry. Ya BO won this year only because OUR PARTY WAS STUPID and nominated a SENATOR.

Best choice IMO. Obambi picked a bunch of Clinton and Bush retreads for his government so he’s going to be just as much of a political cypher as he’s always been. Don’t expect any screwups big enough to cost him reelection: not with the Bush/Clinton training wheels on.
Plus, leaving her as governor, while objectively better “executive” experience, does nothing for her national presence. If all of you are serious about Palin already being qualified to be VP, then the near future for her should be Public Relations and convincing everyone else of that. It’s easier to do that as a pork-buster/deficit-warrior/corruption-hunter in the Senate.

Gov. Palin, bless her heart, is so not ready to run for POTUS. 2012 should not be a consideration for that office. My best argument to naysayers was “Look at McCain’s mom. He’s going to make it through the term.”
I saw her speak. She’s fabulous. Amazing. She has no national record to speak of. 2016 is the earliest she should seek the office, regardless of how vulnerable the incumbent appears in 2012.
EconomicNeocon on December 19, 2008 at 7:52 PM

My thoughts- run for governor again in 2010, and when she terms out in 2014- run for Begich’s seat in the senate and President in 2016

Mr_Magoo on December 19, 2008 at 8:10 PM
This is hardly a shocker. She is well loved in Alaska. They’d pick her over just about any politician. I offer as evidence of this the fact that the left are trying to get that idiot Monegan of Troopergate fame to run against her if she decides to seek re-election in 2010.
Running that stooge against her is basically a declaration that they don’t think anyone could beat her.
I have this strange feeling that if she were to run for the presidency, she would draw upon a reserve of new first time voters. The sort who are not interested in politics and don’t vote, but will be drawn to her message. This is how she won all of her previous races.
ramrocks on December 19, 2008 at 8:12 PM
I don’t know about 2016. Start with assuming that Obama completely alienates his base, as he appears to be determined to do, and taxes us into near-oblivion, and we win by a landslide in 2012. Then either we get a winner, and she’s to supportive to compete — or we get a real lemon, and the voters are ready for another Dem in four years.
I like the idea of her getting a little DC “cred” (even though it’s far less actual cred than being a governor), but I’d prefer seeing her smiling face again in 2012 more.

I really question if she really wants to be a Senator. She still has two young kids who wouldn’t see her much if she was in Washington 4 or 5 days a week. Who knows though. I am one who prefers she stays in Alaska and stays as Governor for at least 2 more years.

paragon27x on December 19, 2008 at 8:29 PM
Being the Senator from Alaska is all about bringing home the bacon. A junior Senator is a lousy position. She won’t be in charge of any committees. She’ll be lower on the totem pole than even “Senator Franken” (Saints preserve us! I’m using the name in casual conversation because I’m trying to inoculate myself in case it actually happens).
It’s much better to remain governor. She doesn’t need to go to Washington to stay in the national spotlight. She’s in the national spotlight wherever she is. She’s hardly left Alaska since the election and yet she’s still an object of interest.
ramrocks on December 19, 2008 at 8:30 PM
You’re absolutely right. And how many of our great Presidents came from the Senate, anyway? As mentioned earlier in the thread, good Governors are oftentimes* well suited to become Presidents because they understand how to accomplish goals as Executives.
* Void in Georgia
Red State State of Mind on December 19, 2008 at 8:30 PM
I’ve said it before and I will say it again. I think it would be a big mistake to make a move for a Senate seat. Not that she couldn’t handle herself, but right now the Senate is controlled by the dems. If she where successful she would become a huge target for the dems to try and damage politically. They are already trying as you well know; Turkey gate; now they are trying to make a race scandal out the e-mails being passed around like in any office. So, I think it would be a better political choice to remain Governor and gain more executive experience and distance herself dem controlled political machine. We all know she already faces an uphill battle for 2012 nomination and will need to remain free of as many scandals as possible.

This is interesting, but not surprising: two reporters that traveled with Palin are writing a book about it. Senate in 2010 followed by a presidential run in 2016.
I fail to see how a woman who slashed her way through corrupt Alaskan politics, mostly against her own party, would suddenly become tainted in Washington. There is no way that the Senate would change peoples perceptions in regards to most viewing her as a outsider.
Among that band of idiots in the Senate, Palin would stand out. The Republicans have some great prospects in the House but not so much in the Senate (aside from DeMint).
It’s similar to the logic behind putting Caroline in the Senate except Palin is qualified and isn’t boring. She would be able to select any given issue and make it a big deal.

Yeah, the Trig Truthers are sweating that, since it’s only eight months since Bristol’s “first pregnancy”. They have a fallback position, though – some of them have been saying that Bristol faked this pregnancy, and they’re stealing or buying a baby from somewhere. It might have been arranged at the Wasilla Bible Church and the fire was staged to destroy records of the transaction.
Others have already been saying that Willow was actually Trig’s mom, not Bristol.
Anyway, prayers and best wishes to Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston for an easy birth and a healthy child (I guess it’s supposed to be a boy, according to an interview with Chuck Heath.)

They have – plenty of incest allegations at the main Trig Truther site. The things they say over there will curl your hair. I only look at it once in a while to see what the current memes are amongst the PDS crowd.
Back on the Senate topic – I’m concerned that she couldn’t afford it. Remember the stories about Congressmen sleeping in their offices because they couldn’t afford a place in D.C.? I remember Norm Coleman was living in a tiny room in someone else’s apartment, for God’s sake. They definitely couldn’t afford a place for the family – would she want to spend so much time away from them? That’s why so many Senators are rich before they get there.

Why are you being so negative about the situation? You came out find didn’t you? So I assume the Governor’s grandson will be fine as well….

Run for reelection as governor in 2010 and run for Begich’s Senate seat in 2014. You can still run as a VP or maybe P in 2016.

Just because I can whoop some doesn’t mean I do it.
Sarah already knows that she can easily beat Lisa.
But, she also knows that she should stay a governor and come from outside to conquer Washington ala William 1066.
