Alaska Senate poll: Palin 55, Murkowski 31

posted at 6:31 pm on December 19, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Via the Standard. The bad news? It’s a dKos poll. The good news? Kos’s pollster ain’t half bad.

Good thing for Murkowski that she and Palin aren’t rivals, aside from the occasional preemptive declaration of war.

Palin would crush Daddy’s Little Girl in a primary. Remember, Lisa Murkowski was appointed to the seat by her father when he was elected to his ill-fated term as governor. Palin’s successful primary challenge to father Murkowski was aided in great part by the backlash to that nepotism. The voters passed a ballot initiative stripping the governor of the power to make such appointments in the future. So given a credible Republican challenger, Murkowski melts.

Since Palin vanquished Murkowski’s father, there would be some poetry to also taking out his daughter, but I suspect Murkowski would be vulnerable to other top Republicans. I’d guess at this point that even if Palin passes on the Senate, Murkowski will have to fight for her party’s nomination.

She wins in a waltz in the general election too, of course. I’ve made the case before why, contrary to popular wisdom, it could be a good move for her, but it makes more sense if she’s planning to skip the presidential race in 2012 and build her national cred for a run four years later instead of trying to bounce from governor to Senator to president in the span of two years. Surprisingly enough, we haven’t polled this one yet. Have at it.

Good point. Maybe if she signs a big book deal…I think she would hate the Senate anyway. I can see the points that AP and others have made about the kind of credentials she would get there, but in a lot of the stuff I’ve read it sounds like she gets frustrated with bureaucracy. She’s a doer, all they do in the Senate is talk.

Yeah, if she does get a good book deal, the lefties will scream “money-hungry attention seeker, she only ran for VP to cash in!1!!!!!11!” And they will also say that she is rich and out of touch with ordinary people.

But I think the good she could do with the money would outweigh any new memes she gave the left. Maybe she could even waive her governor’s salary like Ahnuld does.

You don’t have to be pc. “Man” on HotAir is the masculine Latin which means both sexes like in Spanish.

Man means effeminate beta or even gamma male on sites like DKos, DU, and HuffPo.

Think El Cid AND Queen Isabella rolled into “Man”.

You know, I even agreed with her today on the Franken thread. She’s nuts when it comes to Palin and religion, but she’s not completely crazy. I felt rather sorry for her when she explained why she hates religion so much.

It’s the Christmas season, so I feel goodwill towards all.

Yeah, the Trig Truthers are sweating that, since it’s only eight months since Bristol’s “first pregnancy”. They have a fallback position, though – some of them have been saying that Bristol faked this pregnancy, and they’re stealing or buying a baby from somewhere. It might have been arranged at the Wasilla Bible Church and the fire was staged to destroy records of the transaction.

Others have already been saying that Willow was actually Trig’s mom, not Bristol.

meltenn on December 19, 2008 at 11:32 PM

It’s much better to remain governor. She doesn’t need to go to Washington to stay in the national spotlight. She’s in the national spotlight wherever she is. She’s hardly left Alaska since the election and yet she’s still an object of interest.

ramrocks on December 19, 2008 at 8:30 PM

I agree. She will have no problem staying in the news if she does the following:

1) Create PAC, and get a secret advisor like a Dick Morris or other person to assist.
2) Campaign for GOP candidates in 2010.
3) Be a kickass Governor and rerun in 2010.
4) Write a book that is weighty on policy and what her views are, aligning with RNC platform for the most part and why. Meet with respected conservative people about certain issues.
5) Do some interviews/appearances regularly to work on image and to present the real Sarah.
6) Study Spanish diligently and learn latino culture. Do an appearance on one or more Univision shows to built up her relationship. Knowing something about latino culture, Sarah will do quite well, and they WILL warm up to her.
7) Run for POTUS in 2012 if Obama’s administration is like Jimmy Carter’s or worse. If not, run for Senate in 2014 and POTUS in 2016 but be willing to accept the VP nod again if she is defeated in primaries by say a Jindal or Romney.

The problem is whether she has the time and whether she thinks it is all worth it.

I believe she can still be an effective Mom and governor and still release enough time in her schedule to tackle these.

If she REALLY wants it, she can handle it, but the family will have some input.

Yeah, I like your plan. She should also hook up with some of the think tanks – possibly the Heritage Foundation, but I’d like to see her build more libertarian connections at organizations like the Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute.

Would love to see her in a forum with Ayaan Hirsi Ali talking about women’s issues.

That would be a tragedy. I hope you’re wrong. I think you are wrong. Sarah Palin is ambitious, she hates to lose, and she loves the crowds. She looked stronger as the campaign went on. I say strike while the iron is hot. Obama in 2012 won’t be the Obama in 2008; the novelty will have worn off long before and Bush will be a distant memory. He won’t be invincible by any means, in my opinion.

Don’t know if you guys saw this article on Palin’s energy plan for Alaska. I like this model – it presents options for local communities, everything from wind farms to hydro, and seeks consensus from the local community in what best suits their local needs, and what they can afford.

Then it appears the idea is that the state pays for initial construction, but the local community pays for upkeep.

I like it – pushes responsibility down to the lowest possible level.

Jim62sch on December 20, 2008 at 12:29 AM

meltenn on December 19, 2008 at 11:46 PM

Interesting article. Further proof of how rigged the old Murkowski oil tax was:

Cowdery, 78, acknowledged conspiring with top officials of the former oil-field service company Veco Corp. to attempt to get $25,000 into the campaign of another state senator in 2006. In exchange, the state senator was to have supported of [sic] Veco’s position on pending oil-tax legislation.

I wonder if they can or will trace Veco back to the big North Slope oil producers? I mean, Veco is chump change compared to the big boys like BP, ConocoPhillips and Exxon.

ramrocks on December 20, 2008 at 12:34 AM

“There’s still a lot of talk about her,” says a longtime party strategist and former adviser to Ronald Reagan. “She’s still a hot property, but she needs to put a system together. She doesn’t have much in the way of political infrastructure up there [in Alaska]. It will be interesting to see how she allocates her time.”

Do you think the Governor is assembling some kind of kitchen cabinet? I hope so…

An Era of Hate on December 20, 2008 at 12:35 AM

Jim62sch on December 20, 2008 at 12:29 AM

Brilliant! I love it. And it gives the answer to that idiot writer of the “impeach her” article who complained about Palin not having a long term energy plan.

Well as Palin’s energy guru notes in the last sentence in the ADN article :

“The end result will be a long-range energy plan.”

And I love the idea of local decision making and control, because it gives the locals a vested interest in maintaining the projects and keeping costs down. And let’s not forget that it provides jobs too! This is the sort of government innovation you get when you have a former small town mayor is the chief executive. Small town mayors understand that state or federal government marching orders are often flawed or completely unworkable.

ramrocks on December 20, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Jim62sch on December 20, 2008 at 12:29 AM

Interesting. Definitely sounds like it has potential, and I like keeping it as close to the communities as possible. Fits with Palin’s past statements that the government entity that’s closest to the people governs best.

ramrocks on December 20, 2008 at 12:34 AM

Good question. Gotta think they’re probably trying. Stevens was a pretty big fish, but I’d say that there are some more to catch in state government. And tying the Big Three in would make somebody’s career. The question is: Can they make the cases? They obviously didn’t catch the people they’re still investigating in the act of taking bribes, or at least didn’t get them doing it on video (unlike some of the ones that are already in jail). But considering that Cowdery wasn’t indicted until this past summer, I’d say they’re taking their time to build their cases.

Hey ramrocks and Jim62sch, how is Alaska going to pay for this energy plan of hers?

lowandslow on December 20, 2008 at 1:03 AM

meltenn on December 20, 2008 at 12:51 AM

What also amazing is how cheaply these politicians can be bought. $25,000 to sell your honor?

In the Vogue article on Palin, the writer describes Alaska as “a place where votes on behalf of oil interests could be bought for not much more than the price of a used car.”

This is why I don’t trust the oil companies up there. They play dirty. Anybody who thinks that Palin’s rhetoric is just empty populism needs to take a closer look at the scummy dealings of these big business monopolies. Free market capitalism is good; but it often seems like the bigger the corporate entity, the more deformed their notion of free market capitalism. Corporatism slowly takes over. Just take a look at the Detroit Big Three for a perfect example of what I mean.

How does any state pay for infrastructure projects? State taxes, bonds, federal funding. I haven’t had a chance to read the proposed state budget yet.

Damn, if anyone told me a year ago that I would develop an interest in Alaska state politics, energy policy, natural gas pipelines, and budget issues, I would have said “What are you smoking?” I think I know more about Alaskan issues and legislators than I do about my home state now.

ramrocks on December 20, 2008 at 3:08 AM

lowandslow on December 20, 2008 at 1:03 AM

Well, according to the article:

In a May opinion column, [Palin's energy czar Steve]Haagenson wrote that the new energy plan would help towns focus their requests for state construction money.

What it won’t do is commit the state to spending any money, he said in a phone interview last week.

“We’ll talk about the financing strategy later on,” Haagenson said at the time.

Still, Bill McAllister, Gov. Sarah Palin’s spokesman, said the plan eventually will include some decisions on how to spend state money on energy.

Haagenson, head of the Alaska Energy Authority, told the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce on Monday that, in his view, the state should only pay to construct projects on the list that go forward — not annual operating costs.

These capital projects are either part of her current budget or will be financed somehow. They are definitely worth the money. These are long term energy infrastructure projects that are necessary for future stability and prosperity of her state.

Josh Painter’s not as optimistic as we are about Conroy and Walshe’s book. Most of his concern seems to stem more from the publisher’s connections and history than their past reporting. Apparently, it’s the same publisher that published Scott McLellan’s book.

Who are they expecting to buy the book? The “love her or hate her” line in the press blurb on the book indicates they would like people of both sentiments to buy the book. They’ll have to be somewhat even handed.

Shushannah Walshe’s posts were always subtly more even handed than Conroy’s. For example, toward the end of the campaign when Palin must have been functioning on four hours of sleep and giving non-stop stump speeches, she made the mistake of saying, “election day is only three days away,” when it was actually two days away. Walshe wrote about this silly mistake lightly, noting that perhaps Palin subconsciously wished she had more time. Conroy wrote more condescendingly about it — noting that someone needs to change Palin’s teleprompter script. Same incidence, but spun two very different ways.

This is why I don’t trust the press. I trust what I see first hand. I trust what I read from the primary sources.

I guess we’ll see how it turns out. They work for different news organizations, at different ends of the ideological spectrum, and they have different personalities as individuals. Maybe they’ll balance each other out. After reading through all their posts I’m more concerned about editing now that I’ve read Painter’s post. This post of Conroy’s cracked me up.

meltenn on December 20, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Another article about the drug bust. Things are looking a little suspicious:

Normally, troopers file charging documents in court to back up arrests. Clerks at the Palmer courthouse said they hadn’t seen any filings, and none has to be filed until the hearing.

The Palmer District Attorney’s office prosecutes drug cases. Palmer District Attorney Roman Kalytiak said he was aware of the arrest, but also had not seen any reports or charging documents.

Kalytiak said the standard protocol for drug arrests is that law enforcement officials observe one drug buy, then get a warrant that permits them to record conversations and document more buys.

“I’d imagine standard protocol was followed,” the district attorney said.

I sure hope these troopers aren’t playing political games here. I don’t understand why they didn’t the troopers state from the beginning that Johnson was busted for oxyc*ntin. They led everyone to believe that she was running a meth lab in her backyard. Oxyc*ntin is much more sympathetic.

I’m still not clear on why the ADN originally reported (and continues to report) the story as if it’s front page news. It’s a small-time drug bust that should get a two sentence mention on the crime page in the Wasilla paper. The only reason the ADN is even reporting on this is to hit Palin. That, or to get hits on their website. Probably a little of both. Everybody seems to be hitching (or has hitched) their star to her to get their fifteen minutes and make some money: Monegan, the ADN, Conroy and Walshe, SNL, basically every other news organization in the known universe, and on and on (and that doesn’t even mention all the shady people that tried to turn her into a sex object).

Bingo! Ironic that a woman who was derided because the RNC had to purchase a wardrobe for her has become a cash cow for so many.

I’m still annoyed about the criticism of the travel expenses. They keep criticising her for taking her kids on official functions. They state, “what could the kid be doing for the state? How can the kid be on state business?” Well, what did Chelsea do for the United States when she traveled all over the globe with her parents during the Clinton presidency? These media idiots act so self-righteous — as if they’ve never put a lavish dinner on their expense report. McCafferty at CNN railed about how Palin is a sleazy politician just like all the others for charging the state for her kids’ travel expenses. I want someone to rail about this every time the Obama kids are seen traveling as the First Family. Am I off base on this? I’d like to hear someone else’s opinion on this.
