Ultimate heart-ache: Michelle dumps on atheists

posted at 1:57 pm on December 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

But affectionately. Sort of. Except for her suggestion that believers treat them like “trolls.” Heh.

I think she’s referring specifically to the sort of jackassery going on at the capitol in Washington, of which neither I nor the other conservative atheist/agnostics I read are fans. But just in case not, I take comfort in knowing that I’ll always have Ayaan.

Exit question: Um, what exactly is Gretchen saying here? Christianity’s going to disappear unless we … take away atheists’ First Amendment rights?

All Allahpundit has to do is say, “Atheism” and the thread jumps to 1,000 posts!

It’ll never go out of fashion.

Allah, you clever munschen!

Hahaha. It pays the bills I suppose. More comment equals more advertising. I think AP would probably avoid religious debates if they were not necessary. There are worse ways to make a living.

But in the big picture, the real hero of this history is Genghis Khan who ended the period of muslim military dominance. I’d also point people towards the 8th century Jewish Khazar Kingdom which slowed the muslims down in their early period of success.

this is an interesting point….yes christianity has lost its nerve…and most of what you see as ‘christian’ is probably not…but a version of laodicea…the backsliding church…

I find it interesting that the Bible talks about the Beast, the anti-christ…a very scary, and impressive man…who beheads those who oppose him…things that make you go hmmmmm…

I haven’t looked at it, but I would suggest reading the Wikipedia article on David Hume followed by reading

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialogues_concerning_Natural_Religion

If that’s not enough, you may want to look up other summaries of his argument in Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion at your local library. You could even read the book. I did at age 17 and thought it was quite good.

BTW, the argument has been given a more modern probabilistic facelift since Hume. If you are really wedded to arguing it, you should probably go that route.

I argue that the Judaism is the truth because I have experienced it to be truth. It’s not much in the way to convince anyone else, but Judaism doesn’t demand we convert other people. Still, I do think it’s really cool when people do convert.

Pelayo on December 18, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Not backbone, but grip on the state. In countries where the religion runs things it is the state like many Islamic states. In other countries the state is the state and religions like Islam and Christianity are weakened. Judaism is the religion of exile, so in many cases where the state is the state it still supercedes the state and actually created its own state where Jews worldwide migrate. Religion and the State are both in the same business, forcing nomos, the church and state balance just determines the winning tyranny.

How about a pen? I wonder how long it would take a pen to evolve? Let’s see. We’d need an ink supply and a container to hold it. It would be handy to have clicker or a cap on the pen so we wouldn’t stain our clothes with it all the time. It would also need to be in a shape and weight that is easy to hold. If it, uh, ended up weighing a pound, we wouldn’t likely use it that often. If it was shaped like a triangle or something else, it would be difficult to hold. It seems there are so many things to remember in planning a simple pen. Somebody must have put some pretty clever planning into it.

Wait a minute there Religious_Zealot. Before you go accusing me of doing something wrong, do you know the whole story?

Let’s, for the sake of discussion, assume that Esthier IS a whore – again, just for the sake of discussion. What is the point in calling her that?

You ARE aware that people don’t respond well to being called names (whether they are accurate names or not is irrelevant)?

Note that when talking with lepers and tax collectors and whores, Jesus never calls them that. There’s no scripture where Jesus says “Whore! You’re a whore!”

Instead He offered grace and love and a new way of life.

Thus, even IF Esthier is a whore, calling her that doesn’t HELP the situation.

Of course, if she’s NOT a whore, then you’re not only wrong, but you’re sinning (falsely accusing).

Thus, if you are trying to teach, then you are doing a horrible job at it since no one is listening to you because of how you act toward people.

And is the word “whore,” is it found in the Bible?

apacalyps on December 18, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Dionysus was born… simply because Zeus got horny. And depending on which myth you read, was either born of a human mother (Semele) or a goddess (Persephone).

Jesus died on the cross by the hands of the people He came to save.

Dionysus died by the hands of the Titans sent by his father’s wife.

Jesus was resurrected to conquer death and give eternal life to humans.

Dionysus was resurrected because… well, because Zeus wanted to.

And since God/human couplings were not new, even for the Dionysus myth…

…and neither were death/resurrection stories…

…it’s just plain silly to state that Christ was “patterned” off of Dionysus.

CyberCipher on December 18, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Fine let’s try this again:

“Now if you would awaken a man-even though he were the dullest of all people-as one awakens a sleeping individual, and if you were to ask him whether he desired at that moment to have knowledge of the heavenly spheres, namely, what their number is and what their configuration, and what is contained in them, and what the angels are, and how the world as a whole was created, what its end is in view of the arrangements of various parts with one another, and what the soul is, and how it is created in time in the body, and whether the human soul can be separated from the body, and, if it can, in what manner and through what instrument and with distinction in view, and if you put the same question to him with regard to other subjects of research of this kind, he would undoubtedly answer you in the affirmative. He would have a natural desire to know these things as they are in truth; but he would wish this desire to be allayed, and the knowledge of all this to be achieved by means of one or two words that you would say to him. If, however you would lay upon him obligations to abandon his occupation for a week’s time until he should understand all this, he would not do it, but would be satisfied with deceptive imaginings through which his soul would be set at ease. He would also dislike being told there is such a thing whose knowledge requires many premises and a long time for investigation. You know these matters are mutually connected; there being nothing in what exists besides God, may he be exalted, and the totality of things that he had made; for they are indicative of His existence and of what ought to be believed about Him, I mean to say, of what should be affirmed and denied with regard to Him. It is therefore indispensible to consider all beings as they really are so that we may obtain for all the kinds of beings true and certain premises that would be useful to us in our researches pertaining to the divine science.

If that’s not enough, you may want to look up other summaries of his argument in Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion at your local library.

I posted the following:

The person who thinks a Book had no designer is:

___ A. Intelligent

___ C. Has an ulterior motive for denying the obvious

To which you responded:

You may wish to actually read up on the argument from design before presenting us with arguments known to be silly for over two centuries.

You wrote the book analogy was silly. You said the arguments was known to be silly for over two hundred years. Now, I don’t want to go sorting through a whole bunch of links from you explaining this. Tell me in your own words why it is silly for me to propose that a Book could not assemble itself? I just want a general idea why you think words, sentences, and paragraphs, paper, ink, exclamation points, question marks, punctuation, and meaning and structure to all of it which creates the Book is silly? And why you want me to believe that evolved from a nothing! Thank you.

And make inappropriate and misinformed comparisons.

Seriously, other than both were the sons of God, both died and both rose again…

…there are no other similarities.

And even in these similarities there are profound and fundamental differences.

Jesus was born to be the messiah.

Dionysus was born… simply because Zeus got horny. And depending on which myth you read, was either born of a human mother (Semele) or a goddess (Persephone).

According to Euripides he was born of Semele, divinely impregnated, who was killed in child birth and was hidden from Herad, oops I mean Hera, because she would kill him so Zeus created a dummy of Dionysus which Hera flung to its death.

Jesus died on the cross by the hands of the people He came to save.

Dionysus died by the hands of the Titans sent by his father’s wife.

Both subjected to their parent’s will, death.

Jesus was resurrected to conquer death and give eternal life to humans.

True, they’ve been making up this crap for years. That’s the point of the larger discussion, religions themself.

…it’s just plain silly to state that Christ was “patterned” off of Dionysus.

Yeah your right, but this conversation sure made me feel like picking up Euripides’ Bacchus. I can read about he God of Wine who healed people, had a profound effect on women and dealt with them more than many other Gods. And the part where he destroys the denier of God’s will, Penthius’s Temple, or Palace is great.

1) According to ANOTHER story, he was born to Persephone. At least have a coherent story.
2) And Dionysus was born for WHAT reason? To be the messiah? To save His people? Oh, just because Zeus got horny.
3) And Jesus was killed by God’s jealous wife? Oh, wait, that’s not how it went.

Both subjected to their parent’s will, death.

1) Christ died by the will of His father in order to save mankind.
2) Dionysus died by the will of his mother because his father couldn’t keep his pants zippered. Yeah, THOSE are the same things.

Actions were the same rhetoric was skewed, the rhetoric is what influences behavior, actions provide the awe.

I’m not sure that sentence was actually written in English.

Anyway, Jesus’ resurrection showed the defeat of death so that His followers could have eternal life.

Dionysus’ resurrection showed…um….well…hmmm…

…well it showed that his father wanted him back for his own selfish reasons.

You know, there are valid, respected doubts about Christianity.

It is odd that God was very busy and active 4000 years ago, but he has been silent for the last 2000. Retirement?

Pelayo on December 18, 2008 at 10:14 PM

He still is ‘active’. Just as he often spoke through his angels or prophets, he still does. There have been numerous confirmed miracles, and many claim to have been visited by the Virgin Mary, sent by her Son who is God. Some of these apparitions have been approved by the Vatican. This isn’t done lightly. Medjugore is still under investigation after all these years. Many scoff at these things, yet scientists and doctors have tried and failed to explain the miracles. The Shroud of Turin is still in question, even in this age. Interestingly, the sample tested came from a patch and not the original cloth. Even with the erroneous conclusion on the patched part, they still can’t explain how the image came to be there. I believe it is a miracle. The stories of people as they face death…So many things that I see as evidence of God’s action in our lives. God has never stopped ’speaking’ to us. We are just less likely to hear or recognize him in all the noise of our modern world.

pannw on December 18, 2008 at 11:22 PM

Pelayo on December 18, 2008 at 11:25 PM

@ pannw on December 18, 2008 at 11:22 PM

“confirmed” You need to put quotes around it when the only people confirming the miracles are those who benefit by people believing they happened.

ColtsFan may have been incorrect or misinformed but that is not the same thing as being pure evil.

aengus on December 18, 2008 at 10:17 PM

I didn’t call him “pure evil,” You are not characterizing my intention accurately. I rebuked ColtsFan for accusing an innocent man of having ethical problems. Not only that, but ColtsFan attacked his views which are essentially the same as my views. You don’t do that! You don’t attack or undermine a fellow brother or sister in Christ when they are trying to serve the Lord with a pure heart. Even if they are not serving the Lord how you prefer them too. Everybody has their own job. Leave ‘em alone! So I rebuked Coltsfan saying, “Get thee hence, Satan: (Matthew 4:10). Leave me alone. I don’t want your help.” I didn’t do anything unscriptural. The Lord Jesus didn’t use passive words when the apostle Peter denied His words, instead “he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” (Matthew 16:22-23). Jesus recognized that this was really Satan speaking through Peter (Get thee behind me, Satan) — not in the sense of satanic possession, but rather satanic persuasion. Jesus sharply rebuked Peter.

2) And Dionysus was born for WHAT reason? To be the messiah? To save His people? Oh, just because Zeus got horny.

Who is your intended audience? Early Greek Tragedy needed to appeal to all, Christianity in its early years was more reliant on the poor and uneducated.

3) And Jesus was killed by God’s jealous wife? Oh, wait, that’s not how it went.

Herad, I mean Hera was still a Goddess herself. All Christianity did was consolidate the Gods into one, or three. The duality of God’s will still exists, the monotheistic God both wished Jesus dead and resurrected, and also save him in infancy from Herod.
