The Clinton’s Saudi fundraisers; Lefty meltdown watch: Blackwater a donor

For ten years, Bill Clinton resisted calls to make public the donors to his charitable foundation. Under pressure from Barack Obama for Hillary’s appointment to State, Bill finally agreed to the release of the data — and his reluctance is now understandable. Clinton took tens of millions from foreign interests that will call into question Hillary’s ability to represent American foreign policy:
Former President Bill Clinton’s foundation has raised at least $41 million from Saudi Arabia and other foreign governments that his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton may end up negotiating with as the next secretary of state.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave $10 million to $25 million to the William J. Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit created by the former president to finance his library in Little Rock, Ark., and charitable efforts to reduce poverty and treat AIDS. Other foreign government givers include Norway, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei, Oman, Italy and Jamaica.
The foundation disclosed the names of its 205,000 donors on a Web site Thursday, ending a decade of resistance to identifying the sources of its money. While the list is heavy with international business leaders and billionaires, some 12,000 donors gave $10 or less.
Twelve thousand small donors from a pool of 205,000 does not mitigate the impression given by this list. That amounts to less than six percent of overall donors to his presidential library and charities. The bulk of the money comes from powerful interests around the world, and the heavy Saudi and Indian financing could create problems in two hot spots for the Obama administration, especially the latter.
I’m comfortable with positioning ourselves as a friend of India, which has a much better record of democracy and of fighting terrorism than Pakistan. The new Pakistani government represents a step in the right direction, though, and they may not appreciate dealing with someone with so many large financial ties to their bitter enemy to the south. The incoming administration will have to deal with both governments to resolve the Kashmir dispute, which fuels terrorism and extremism in the region and has prompted Pakistan in the past to subsidize terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba. Will Pakistan see Hillary as a disinterested refereee in that process now? That seems highly doubtful.
Some of the major donors may raise eyebrows, either for questionable associations or just puzzlement. For instance, the Swedish Postcode Lottery donated between $500K and $1 million to the foundation. Why would they donate to the Clintons instead of charities closer to home? The US Islamic World Conference donated $250-500K, as did the China Overseas Real Estate Development organization. What made them so interested in the Clinton library?
Here’s another eyebrow-raiser:
Harold Snyder, director for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, the largest drug company in Israel. His son, Jay T. Snyder, serves on the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, which oversees State Department activities, and served as a senior U.S. adviser to the United Nations, where he worked on international trade and poverty.
That would be the same State Department which Hillary will run after confirmation as Secretary of State. Is there a potential conflict there? What kind of oversight does Snyder fils provide?
Michelle has more on other donors, and the question is pretty clear. Can the US have a Secretary of State who has so many financial connections to foreign interests? The Senate had better conduct a thorough debate on that topic.
Update: Uh-oh. How long before the inevitable freak-out among the Left about this:
The Blackwater Training Center donated $10,001 to $25,000. The State Department will have to decide next year whether to renew Blackwater Worldwide’s contract to protect U.S. diplomats in Iraq. Five Blackwater guards have been indicted by a U.S. grand jury on manslaughter and weapons charges stemming from a September 2007 firefight in Baghdad’s Nisoor Square in which 17 Iraqis died.
Pass the popcorn, please.

It might be best if all of those who choose to enter public service be banned for life from cavorting with foreign governments and corporations.
If one has the honor of serving the public than they must be willing to forgo lobbying, speechifying and being able to leave Washington richer than they when they arrived.
Let’s see how many actually want to serve the public as opposed to lining their own and their friends pockets.

The Clinton Library is actually the Clinton Laundramat for his bribes. Once in the library, he can do anything he wants with the money. The library serves as cover.
For example, when a terrorist attack killed and wounded US military at Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, the %$# Saudis refused to cooperate with the FBI in the investigation. Clinton brought it up with the Saudis, who refused, and then brought up how he was raising funds for his library. The Saudis understood the connection and made a generous contribution to the Clinton Library. In other words, Clinton accepted blood money to let the Saudis off the hook and to hell with dead Air Force members.
I imagine that the Clintons will profit handsomely off Hillary’s position as Secretary of State, cutting more backroom deals with the Saudis et al that profit themselves at the expense of the nation.

10 to 25 million? Out of 41 million? And they are not sure which it is? Is it 24% of the money raised or 61%? Not the best guy in the world with numbers and all, but that should be pretty easy to spot………

Interesting that the Swedish Postcard Lottery does not list Clinton as a beneficiary on their site. All the beneficiaries they do list though are in Sweden. looks like a red flag to me…unless there is some kind of environmental connection:
Beneficiaries
By the end of 2007, the Swedish Postcode Lottery had nine beneficiaries. The great interest of many other organisations in becoming beneficiaries, as well as the strong support among the Swedish households, has llustrated the importance of the Swedish Postcode Lottery. By using the potential of the latest ommunication tools – in marketing, through television entertainment and big prizes – the lottery generates money for charity that would never have reached the sector otherwise.
The Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation (Barncancerfonden)
Save the Children Sweden (Save the Children)
World Wide Fund For Nature (Världsnaturfonden)
Children’s Rights in Society (Barnens Rätt I Samhället)
Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS)
Médecins Sans Frontières
The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation
The Alzheimer Foundation
The Swedish Postcode Foundation

Of course Saudi Arabia has been buying American politicians for some time. Bush 43 was the first politician in a long time to oppose the Saudi’s interested, and they started bankrolling the Democrats heavily in return.
This also explains Joseph Wilson and the revolt of the State Department under Bush – both also owned by the Saudis.
IIRC, Bill Clinton got $20M for “consulting” work for Uzbekistan also.

This disclosure is one of the best things that will come from the Hillary appointment. It’s good for people to see how these things work, and that it’s not just Republicans who have Saudi ties. Well-informed people already know this, of course, but because of the media, a lot of people think this is more a Republican thing.

If I remember correctly, most disclosure reports give amounts in ranges, rather than specific amounts (e.g., “10-20 million dollars”). Not very precise, but that’s what I’ve seen before.
Of course, whoever designed or updated the forms may have an interest in providing as little clarity as possible….

Obama is a fool!
Now Hillery will never get confirmation and will have to slink back to the Senate a shadow of her former Obama rivaliing self. And poor Bill (Well not so poor but he is still Bill – he has that going for him.) will no also lose face having been exposed as a, as a…, OK we already knew that.
If Obama keeps playing his cards like this I will lose all respect for him as the young inexperienced chump at the poker table who is just lucky and keep getting great hands to play.

The real Sec of State for dealing with Islam is Huma Abedin so don’t worry about the Clintons in that regard, the Saudi’s have America to defend Islam and now they have heavy influence in foreign affairs pertinent to Islam. Islam is snug as a bug in a rug.

Investigating the Clinton fundraising machine is prudent, but the larger issue is the contributions by governments, and “charitable” organizations. I wonder what the French, Australian, and Italians will think when they see the enormous contributions their politicians have made.
I am hoping the outcry from foreign citizens will eclipse the blase response United States citizens will have.
Rode Werk on December 18, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Why don’t you look at the foreigners who invested in and later bought out W’s failed oil businesses- and these were favors granted to him before his Presidency. If we’re going to start wringing hands over the influence of foreign donors / investors, let’s start there.
By the way, proceeds from the sale of W’s failed business went directly into his pocket- not to a library.

bridgetown on December 18, 2008 at 1:56 PM
I completely agree with your assessment Tantor, I wouldn’t put it past the Clintoons. I have always said Clintoon should have been brought up on treason charges for failing miserably to take the prudent action against Al Qaeda when his administration had the opportunities.
Instead Clintoon and his administration continually failed to carry out their most basic responsibility to protect the union and its people.
Clintoon was so busy playing “hide the cigar” and covering his azz for all his indiscretions, as well as gutting our military and intelligence capabilities for the sake of his “budget surplus” add in he’s a pacifist to the bone all these things together enabled AQ to continue to train, plan, and ultimately carry out 9-11! Therefore it is my opinion Clintoon should have not just have been impeach but he should have been tried for treason!

Two things:
I knew there was a reason I couldn’t stand Michael Schumacher and it wasn’t just because he cheated on the race track.
Second, this is yet another example of The Black Caesar having no plans whatsoever to keep his promises about reform and change in Washington. He wanted Hillary out of the way and gave her State. But he told Bill not to release the donor list until the discussions of Hillary at State subsided. Now we see what we already knew – Bill Clinton remains in the pockets of several foreign governments.
Worse is that the GOP will do nothing to stand in the way of this appointment. Most have already gone on record to say that they are pleased with her being named.
Disgusting. But, expected from a crook from Chicago.

I really think Obama or his puppeteers had this planned from the beginning. Everyone one was supprised when he offered her the position, O knowing Billy would have to come clean(well at least partially) what better way to discredit the Clintons(they NEVER had any credit with me)then blowing his cover and questioning Hilarys involvement. Voila!! nothing to worry about in 2012 and with this she probably won’t be confirmed. Another body under the bus.

The money for Bill won’t affect US foreign policy. Every US president in recent times has been willing to sit up and bark for the Saudis.
I’d love to believe “concernedsenior” about this blocking Hillary’s confirmation, but other than Tail-Gunner Joe, who exactly in the Senate isn’t going to roll-over for the Saudis?

For the life of me I still can’t figure out why Hill wants this job, no less at the expense of Bill revealing The List.
redfoxbluestate on December 18, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Hillary’s in. Disclosing this info was the price of admission for Hillary.
Look, there’s a Dem majority in both houses. Clinton is the most loved Dem president since Kennedy, despite his flaws. There may be a few preening Senators making noise & getting TV time, but nobody’s gonna actually torpedo the nomination.
As an aside, in some ways Obama looks like he’s Clinton II in more ways than one. He’s hinting toward the center with his appointments. Nepotism is rampant in his administration (Rahm’s brother Ezekiel looks like he’s headed to HHS with Daschle). Obama will make noise and throw a few bones to the far left, but won’t go far enough out on that limb to tick off the majority of Americans.
Poll-driven, public-perception oriented governance is here again!

Ed, I am glad someone is finally shining a light on shady relations Democrats have with Indians and Indian-Americans.
As Chicago Tribune noted, many donors behind the Jesse Jackson Jr. and Roy Blagojevich scandal seem to be Indian-Americans. And the group pretty much voted Obama as a block even after all the things Pres.Bush did for them. And they are pretty much able to steer conversation in the US to their benefit, eg:outsourcing etc. You should be very careful about the emergence of this pressure group.
promachus on December 19, 2008 at 2:31 AM
Very well stated, and I agree. We need repesentatives who do it for the right reason, those that have ‘the heart of a servant’ and want to be in politics for our benefit, not theirs.
