One of many excellent points made in this thread. (to which, i’m four days late, but…)

Joe may be partially correct in his recommendation, I’ve heard The Mossad has had some great successes with these.

But even with the best weapon of its kind, their success depended on tactics and tactician, not tool.

A mag,or two full of .22 LRHPs to the back of a Hamas head will do the job well enough. But you better have a very well trained asset, or two, doing that job.
.22s being rimfire aren’t as reliable as a center-fire cartridge. Tap-rack-bang practice is SOP with center-fire,and even more important with rimfire.

Unless one can successfully make six to ten round head shots,against a probably armed, in the room, and with the element of surprise in his favor, assailant, stay away from .22s as primary self-defense weapons.

My home preference is 9mm within reach. 12 ga within (fast) walking distance.

My prayer is to never have to use either one.

MC made a good point about using the handgun to fight to the long gun, but, like you, I’m a bit fuzzy on the HD use of rifles.
For somebody in a rural area,yeah WTH. But in suburban/urban populations, rifles have way too much penetration.

As far as the actual thread topic; seems to me this is a case where everybody did the right thing.
The woman. A kind this country needs more of.
The Police. Who apparently acted professionally, and supportively.
The DA. Who rightfully refused to press charges.
The rapist. Who justifiably got shot and died.

But as others have commented, a sad part of the story is she didn’t have the shotgun the first time.

But the saddest part of the story is, his first victim didn’t have a shotgun.

A woman should never carry a gun or try to use one for self-defense, because the bad guy will just take it away from her and use it against her.

Whereas, a set of car keys will impart superhuman strength and razor-edged combat readiness upon any woman carrying them. There would simply be no way she could ever be disarmed and assaulted then.
Same applies to cell phones and plastic whistles.

Human females by genetics have shorter arms than human males. Unless the female is already in total proximity to the male the male can hold the vicious slashing key arm of a delusional female at his arm’s length.

This is the main reason that female police tend to get disarmed by male prisoners in close proximity who usually can outreach them and already outweight them, a situation too politically incorrect to discuss honestly or openiy.

The male arm has a different elbow that gives him advantage in the straight punch, thrust or grab while the crooked elbow of the human female has advantage for holding small items (like babies) in the crook of the arm yet does not give as good leverage for hoisting large loads, like the bodies of female assault victims

A wonan’s best defense is a ready to fire gun pointed at the center of a man’s body at least a few feet distant.

Odds are that they are better for the loss. He probably had little to do with them anyway, and what interaction he did have wasn’t role-model material, as La.rt.wngr says. So they now have one less sociopath in their lives.

Problem is, the baby-momma(s) appear(s) to have a prediliction for socioapathic men, and they will likely go out and find another one just like him and move him in the house with the kids. :(

I’m a lady and have one and I like it. I agree with the suggestion about talking to a couple of local dealers. I went with my dad and did that before I decided. He wanted to buy me a 12 gauge, but after we talked to the dealers we went to my house and talked through all the options and decided on the Judge. Take somebody with you if you can, and talk through what the primary purpose of the gun is going to be, what your house set up is like, your experience with guns, etc. It was helpful to me.

Taurus just came out the a lengthened cylinder version that will handle 3″ shotshells. I haven’t handled one but it looks like it might be muzzle-heavy (not necessarily a bad thing). Handles 45 Long Colt and, with 000 buck in 410 it will send 6 or 7 mid-caliber pellets out the muzzle at over 800 fps with devastating short-range effect but probably won’t penetrate your walls and kill your neighbor. Like other gun owners have already suggested; education is essential and practice is king. Talk to your local gun dealer (not the one who works out of the trunk of his car). They love to talk guns and most of them really do care about giving good advice.

Defense is a multi-layered event.
I was taught for home defense the rule of three.
1) a carbine
2) a shotgun
3) a pistol
Situational awareness makes the lower numbers work better.

No real hard arguments here guys. My loaded Rem 870 is in my closet, 6 feet from my bed. But, again, it is not my only defensive firearm. If Mr. Bad Guy is in my room, at the foot of my bed, I’m always going to assume that he probably won’t honor my request to step aside for a moment. Even if I ask especially nice! And a long gun is not a good close in weapon. Not quite sure how a rifle figures into home defense unless you plan on…still not sure. Educate me on that one.
And who is the moron that said that women should never carry a firearm and fight with a handful of keys? What a flamer!!!

A shot gun is excellent, but for a woman, a .22 pistol is very very good. Can be easily fired by a woman and the lack of kick makes it a joy to practice with, accurate, ammo is cheap, and at close range the .22 is the weapon of choice for hit men.

Ya, OK…Know a lot of hit men, do ya Mr. Joe? I prefer an M1A1 Abrams as my personal defense weapon (real hard to find a holster for conceal carry though. probably have to go to a custom shop), but I recommend a real scary picture to women that will scare Mr. Bad Guy. A 22 is better than nothing. I mean one or two 22 shorts to the throat of Mr. Bad Guy and I’m confident that he’ll be looking for the extra strength pain reliever, but really, a 22. “ammo is cheap”-all the money you saved on ammo can be used by your family for the higher priced coffin liner with the “Eternal Angels” picture in front of the dearly departed’s now closed eyes to be with her forever … a great comfort to her family, no doubt.
For women I recommend a 380 or a 9mm or a hammerless 38. A 40 S&W if they can handle it, a 45 ACP is wonderful. All ammo hollow point (granted, they’re not as cheap as 22′s however it will make the odds better that she won’t need that “Eternal Angels” coffin liner anytime soon). But smaller hands usually dictate a smaller caliber.
Home defense and carry are usually, but not always different. For women, when they carry, they’ll usually carry in a purse. If they do, that purse needs to be secured, and I’m clear that the firearm needs to be the ONLY thing in a separate pocket, easily accessible. The reason I say this is that I’ve been at a number of funerals, there is a cell phone that goes off, and it’s buried deep in a purse while the woman fumbles or just pretends that’s not playing that “In a Gadda Davida” ringtone.
“I’ll make sure my gun is right on top in my purse”-NO!!!.

We can unite and with collective reason fight what we all think is going to happen to our gun rights. Lets first be exactly like Mark G described. Smart and articulate. Let’s start by not letting the media and liberals paint a caricature of gun owners and dealers.

I just went to the knife and gun show in Fayetteville NC three weeks ago to buy the handgun I’ve been responsibly planning on for months. I paid for it then, but knew I couldn’t get it until I presented the dealer with the proper permits. Had to go to the Charlotte show to actually pick up the Beretta I bought in Fayetteville. (I still have 4 permits left) The point is that it’s a good process. I was checked. 32 years in the military and an active duty officer and I was still checked. It was difficult abiding by the rules but both the store that sold it to me at the show, myself and the city of Fayetteville all played by the rules and now the gun is legally in my procession. What other laws rules would be required to make the system better? None. Everything else only has the purpose of making it harder, stricter on law abiding citizens and easier prey to Delta-Bravos like the recently departed Mr. Preyer. (BTW, anyone else notice the irony of this dudes name?)

I would also like to add that the priority for people should be to buy what will likely to be banned first – handguns, So-called “Assault weapons” and Ammunition.

Plan on buying a shotgun later on – this type of weapon won’t be banned at first – Ostensibly because it goes along with the ‘Guns are for hunting’ meme.
