Rapist surprised to find victim is ardent Second Amendment supporter

posted at 7:38 pm on December 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

I’d call it the feelgood story of the day except (a) it’s actually seven weeks old and is only now making the rounds, probably because the sheer satisfaction of it has finally sent it viral, and (b) the reason he was surprised is because this wasn’t their first encounter, sadly.

In the first incident, the woman heard glass breaking in her basement about midnight on Saturday. She went to leave the house, and the man attacked when she opened the front door. He punched her in the face and then forced her into a bedroom, where he raped her, said H. Morley Swingle, prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County…

She was home alone again Friday about 2:15 a.m. when Preyer broke the same basement window. The victim was awake watching television, when Preyer switched off the electricity to her house.

She tried to call 911, but couldn’t because the power was off. She got a shotgun and waited as the man began banging on the basement door. She fired when Preyer came crashing through the door. When Preyer collapsed, the woman escaped and went to a neighbor’s home, where she called police. Officers, who arrived within a minute, found a bleeding Preyer stumbling away from the house. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died several hours later.

Swingle said the victim identified Preyer as the attacker in both incidents. Preyer, of Jackson, Mo., had wet caulking from the recently repaired basement window on his clothing when he was shot.

No charges, of course. Here’s news video from the week after the incident; Preyer had been married for four months at the time and left eight kids without a father. Exit question: With 11 felonies to his record and enough criminal savvy to cut the power in the home, how many more rapes did this woman prevent?

I’ve maintained for years the BEST homedef weapon is a shotgun. My personal is an Ithaca Model 37, with the slug barrel (18.5″)and #4’s. At 8-10 ft, it’s a totally lethal combo. Plus there’s almost NO risk of penetration of drywall–i.e. not wounding or worse of innocents.

Yes, it is not God’s will that anyone goes to Hell. But he is not only a God of love, but a God of justice. If someone decides not to follow Jesus, that saddens God, but he is bound by his holiness (look up the definition) to separate that person from his presence, for eternity. And that’s Hell.

If it comforts you to think that this career criminal found Jesus and got his ticket punched for Heaven moments before he died, feel free. It comforts me to think he’s in Hell.

sheebe on December 18, 2008 at 10:03 PM

The vast majority of rapes go unreported. How many more women did he rape that haven’t been reported? Good for her.

How many of those women did not have a firearm?
This woman saved a number of women from a similar fate. had one of those previous women had a firearm, this woman would have an old caulked window and no nightmares.

Wow, and I JUST bought a Mossberg 590 today. Awesome. Nice to know my decision is validated.

Kids and guys- as much as I like 12 gauge shotguns (I have two, one being a Rem 870 cop carry with extended ammo tube, fully loaded with a 5 shot stock bandolier) let me quite clear: a shotgun is NOT, repeat NOT the best home defense weapon! You are assuming that Mr. Bad Guy is another room or outside, and/or you’re assuming that you hear him and/or you are assuming you can get to your shotgun before bad things happen. If Mr. Bad Guy is quiet, you’re asleep and Mr. B G is in your room, looking at you with your shotgun somewhere behind him, you, Sir or Madam are Fonged, Big Time,All Day, Everyway! Same is true if he gets the jump on you. Once he’s inside the reach of the barrel (the 21 Foot Edged Weapon Rule), again: you, Sir or Madam and Fonged, Big Time,All Day, Everyway! You’ll also more than likely need two hands to shoot. If Mr. B G is literally on you, again…
Keep a handgun under a pillow or someplace within an arm length and hidden (so Mr. B G doesn’t see it). Preferably a revolver- it is a point and shoot weapon, will work when you’re rattled.
If you have children in the house, a bedside easy access lockbox will suffice.
As I teach in my Carry Permit Class: have a plan. Have another plan for the time your first plan goes bad and stinky and bad again. A shotgun is good, but again, if things don’t go the way you planned…
Having just a shotgun is assuming way too many things will go just the way you hope.
Always remember:”Are you prepared to be wrong?”

Lemme guess, you’re a Rick Warren fan?

Am sure he’s a nice man. I’m a Catholic Christian and he’s an evangelical Christian so we agree on lots of things and disagree on a few.

Yes, it is not God’s will that anyone goes to Hell. But he is not only a God of love, but a God of justice. If someone decides not to follow Jesus, that saddens God, but he is bound by his holiness (look up the definition) to separate that person from his presence, for eternity. And that’s Hell.

You’re right about all this. Forgiveness is also available anytime someone repents. Most of the time this happens waaaayyy before someone dies and the repentance is manifested in a change in the way one’s life is lived. Occasionally (as at Jesus’ crucifixion with one of the two thieves) it happens just before someone dies.

If it comforts you to think that this career criminal found Jesus and got his ticket punched for Heaven moments before he died, feel free. It comforts me to think he’s in Hell.

I don’t know what happened. I just didn’t categorically say he reached one fate or the other (you did).

BTW, again all due respect but why does it “comfort” you to think someone – anyone – is permanently separated from God? Since you’re a Christian, as I am, one would think you’d be at least rooting for his possible repentance.

Just sayin’.

Defense is a multi-layered event.

I was taught for home defense the rule of three.

1) a carbine

2) a shotgun

3) a pistol

Situational awareness makes the lower numbers work better.

sven10077 on December 18, 2008 at 10:10 PM

Amendment X on December 18, 2008 at 10:03 PM

The rule I was taught was that a pistol is used to fight your way to the rifle you should have been using to begin with.

MadisonConservative on December 18, 2008 at 10:16 PM

A woman should never carry a gun or try to use one for self-defense, because the bad guy will just take it away from her and use it against her.

Whereas, a set of car keys will impart superhuman strength and razor-edged combat readiness upon any woman carrying them. There would simply be no way she could ever be disarmed and assaulted then.

Same applies to cell phones and plastic whistles.

[/gunphobic wank]

Bruce in NH on December 18, 2008 at 8:18 PM

That is not what I was taught in self-defense class…

Keys are NOT a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

If the attacker has a gun and you are not under his control ALWAYS RUN! He will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOTbe a vital organ. RUN, preferably in a zigzag pattern!

Only 2% of rapists said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.

Men are most likely to attack & rape in the early morning, between 5:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The number one place women are abducted from/attacked is grocery store parking lots. The number two : office parking lots/garages. Number three : public restrooms.

The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the Arm (between the elbow and armpit) OR in the upper innerthigh VERY VERY HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands – the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it – it hurts.

After the initial hit, always GO for the GROIN. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble and he’s out of there.

When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

Great home defense weapon, Winchester Model 12, 2-3/4 inch copper plated 4’s, 23 ” (legal Minimum Barrell). Gun holds nine and if you hold the trigger down fires as fast as you can pump the weapon.

Burglar one minute, hamburger next, no need to check pulse, and no shooting through the walls and killin the kids or neighbors. Added benefit hard to miss.

Dollayo:
What was this monster doing out of jail? The only place “registered sex offenders” should exist is in jail or the cemetery.

I would agree with you but for one thing. Consider this scenario: two sixteen year olds have sex, utterly consensual. One of them is charged with rape and convicted even though the other refuses to testify against him. He is now a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.

Clean up the statutory “rape” laws, or at least get their victims off the sex offender lists and I will agree with you.

Remember, the whole point of the registry is that the offender is liable to commit another crime. But there’s no reason to believe that a horny teenager whose partner was as eager as he was is going to go through life trying or hoping to rape or molest women, girls, boys, or sheep.

{screen pans to home owner jumping out of bed, grabbing Ol’ Bessie, his/her trusty shotgun}
{phone begins to ring just as homeowner fires weapon}
ADT: “This is ADT home security. You have an alarm going off. Is everything ok?”
Homeowner: “Yep, we’re good here. If you could though, please send over a clean-up crew. Thanks.”

Not likely to happen. Although sexual relations with a child under the age of 13 is is aggravated sexual assault without regard to the age of the actor, sexual assault is defined in New Jersey as sexual penetration with a victim between age 13 and 16 when the actor is at least four years older. Four years is a pretty good defense; many states have less. And if you’re 18 and don’t know enough to stay away from 13-year-olds yet you might need some instruction on the topic. Finally, the prosecutor would likely charge this as juvenile offense or let him plead to a lesser unless the situation was egrigious.

I hope she takes solace in the knowledge that she has prevented perhaps dozens more similar crimes and that God will give her peace of mind. I would like to feel sorry for the rapists family, but I would be hard-pressed to accept they didn’t know what he was about. It’s possible, I guess, but not likely. A shot gun is excellent, but for a woman, a .22 pistol is very very good. Can be easily fired by a woman and the lack of kick makes it a joy to practice with, accurrate, ammo is cheap, and at close range the .22 is the weapon of choice for hit men.

Unfortunately, those eight kids have a mother who would marry a man like Preyer. (Why wouldn’t it surprise me to find out they have different fathers and she met Preyer after becoming his pen pal while he was in prison?) So, in all likelihood, they’re doomed, and society will continue to pay the price.

Best thing. Go to a reputable gun dealer with an indoor range. Tell the concerns you have and they’ll normally set you up with a weapon that you can easily use but is effective in stopping power. If you’re not used to guns, have them or a friend train you and get good with it.

Kelly in VA—Is the Taurus “Judge” the .410 shotgun revolver?

I have been looking into this for my wife. I think it could be ok but seems a bit heavy.

Not being sexist here, but I think a lighter gun is easier to handle for anyone. Lighter guns kick more (second shot may be less accurate) but the first shot can be brought to bear more quickly and accurately.

Look into a small lightweight revolver, at least .38 caliber. .40 or .45 may be better. Stay away from .22’s, not enough stopping power. Make sure you use hollow point bullets to reduce the chance of unwanted wall penetration.

See my other post. Many women are members and the discussion threads are many and educational.

I would also like to add that the priority for people should be to buy what will likely to be banned first – handguns, So-called “Assault weapons” and Ammunition.

Plan on buying a shotgun later on – this type of weapon won’t be banned at first – Ostensibly because it goes along with the ‘Guns are for hunting’ meme.

I agree. (and thanks)

We can unite and with collective reason fight what we all think is going to happen to our gun rights. Lets first be exactly like Mark G described. Smart and articulate. Let’s start by not letting the media and liberals paint a caricature of gun owners and dealers.

I just went to the knife and gun show in Fayetteville NC three weeks ago to buy the handgun I’ve been responsibly planning on for months. I paid for it then, but knew I couldn’t get it until I presented the dealer with the proper permits. Had to go to the Charlotte show to actually pick up the Beretta I bought in Fayetteville. (I still have 4 permits left) The point is that it’s a good process. I was checked. 32 years in the military and an active duty officer and I was still checked. It was difficult abiding by the rules but both the store that sold it to me at the show, myself and the city of Fayetteville all played by the rules and now the gun is legally in my procession. What other laws rules would be required to make the system better? None. Everything else only has the purpose of making it harder, stricter on law abiding citizens and easier prey to Delta-Bravos like the recently departed Mr. Preyer. (BTW, anyone else notice the irony of this dudes name?)

Fight the change!

Bevan on December 19, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Defense is a multi-layered event.
I was taught for home defense the rule of three.
1) a carbine
2) a shotgun
3) a pistol
Situational awareness makes the lower numbers work better.

Amendment X on December 18, 2008 at 10:03 PM

The rule I was taught was that a pistol is used to fight your way to the rifle you should have been using to begin with.

MadisonConservative on December 18, 2008 at 10:16 PM

No real hard arguments here guys. My loaded Rem 870 is in my closet, 6 feet from my bed. But, again, it is not my only defensive firearm. If Mr. Bad Guy is in my room, at the foot of my bed, I’m always going to assume that he probably won’t honor my request to step aside for a moment. Even if I ask especially nice! And a long gun is not a good close in weapon. Not quite sure how a rifle figures into home defense unless you plan on…still not sure. Educate me on that one.
And who is the moron that said that women should never carry a firearm and fight with a handful of keys? What a flamer!!!

A shot gun is excellent, but for a woman, a .22 pistol is very very good. Can be easily fired by a woman and the lack of kick makes it a joy to practice with, accurate, ammo is cheap, and at close range the .22 is the weapon of choice for hit men.
Mr. Joe on December 19, 2008 at 7:25 AM

Ya, OK…Know a lot of hit men, do ya Mr. Joe? I prefer an M1A1 Abrams as my personal defense weapon (real hard to find a holster for conceal carry though. probably have to go to a custom shop), but I recommend a real scary picture to women that will scare Mr. Bad Guy. A 22 is better than nothing. I mean one or two 22 shorts to the throat of Mr. Bad Guy and I’m confident that he’ll be looking for the extra strength pain reliever, but really, a 22. “ammo is cheap”-all the money you saved on ammo can be used by your family for the higher priced coffin liner with the “Eternal Angels” picture in front of the dearly departed’s now closed eyes to be with her forever … a great comfort to her family, no doubt.
For women I recommend a 380 or a 9mm or a hammerless 38. A 40 S&W if they can handle it, a 45 ACP is wonderful. All ammo hollow point (granted, they’re not as cheap as 22’s however it will make the odds better that she won’t need that “Eternal Angels” coffin liner anytime soon). But smaller hands usually dictate a smaller caliber.
Home defense and carry are usually, but not always different. For women, when they carry, they’ll usually carry in a purse. If they do, that purse needs to be secured, and I’m clear that the firearm needs to be the ONLY thing in a separate pocket, easily accessible. The reason I say this is that I’ve been at a number of funerals, there is a cell phone that goes off, and it’s buried deep in a purse while the woman fumbles or just pretends that’s not playing that “In a Gadda Davida” ringtone.
“I’ll make sure my gun is right on top in my purse”-NO!!!.
Just my thoughts…

Now that’s what I call taking out the trash!

Concealed carry for every citizen, everywhere!

Dark-Star on December 19, 2008 at 10:45 AM

what do you think of the taurus “judge”? is that good home defense for me, a woman?

kelley in virginia on December 19, 2008 at 7:46 AM

Taurus just came out the a lengthened cylinder version that will handle 3″ shotshells. I haven’t handled one but it looks like it might be muzzle-heavy (not necessarily a bad thing). Handles 45 Long Colt and, with 000 buck in 410 it will send 6 or 7 mid-caliber pellets out the muzzle at over 800 fps with devastating short-range effect but probably won’t penetrate your walls and kill your neighbor. Like other gun owners have already suggested; education is essential and practice is king. Talk to your local gun dealer (not the one who works out of the trunk of his car). They love to talk guns and most of them really do care about giving good advice.

SKYFOX on December 19, 2008 at 11:18 AM

a good defense for home invasion is a shotgun. the shorter the better.

TomLawler on December 19, 2008 at 11:29 AM

23 ” (legal Minimum Barrell).

Hey dhunter – is that a state thing? Mossberg certainly hasn’t heard of it. 6 shot Cruiser comes in 18.5″ barrel, 8 shot Persuader has a 20″.

rhodeymark on December 19, 2008 at 11:36 AM

This is why I asked for a lightweight handgun for Christmas. Or at least for any occassion falling between now and the inauguration.

kelley in virginia on December 19, 2008 at 7:46 AM

I’m a lady and have one and I like it. I agree with the suggestion about talking to a couple of local dealers. I went with my dad and did that before I decided. He wanted to buy me a 12 gauge, but after we talked to the dealers we went to my house and talked through all the options and decided on the Judge. Take somebody with you if you can, and talk through what the primary purpose of the gun is going to be, what your house set up is like, your experience with guns, etc. It was helpful to me.

This is the best thing that could of happened for those kids, That maggot wasn’t a role model, at least he will provide the worms a good meal.

Sympathy for the little ones; none for him.

SKYFOX on December 19, 2008 at 5:31 AM

Odds are that they are better for the loss. He probably had little to do with them anyway, and what interaction he did have wasn’t role-model material, as La.rt.wngr says. So they now have one less sociopath in their lives.

Problem is, the baby-momma(s) appear(s) to have a prediliction for socioapathic men, and they will likely go out and find another one just like him and move him in the house with the kids. :(

Venusian Visitor on December 19, 2008 at 6:18 PM

1911 .45 ACP for me, loaded with Hornaday TAP +P ammo with Crimson Trace grips and Trijicon night sights. It’s either tucked in it’s holster behind my left hip or next to my bed 24/7/365.

darwin-t on December 19, 2008 at 6:31 PM

A woman should never carry a gun or try to use one for self-defense, because the bad guy will just take it away from her and use it against her.

Whereas, a set of car keys will impart superhuman strength and razor-edged combat readiness upon any woman carrying them. There would simply be no way she could ever be disarmed and assaulted then.
Same applies to cell phones and plastic whistles.

Bruce in NH on December 18, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Is this a joke?

Human females by genetics have shorter arms than human males. Unless the female is already in total proximity to the male the male can hold the vicious slashing key arm of a delusional female at his arm’s length.

This is the main reason that female police tend to get disarmed by male prisoners in close proximity who usually can outreach them and already outweight them, a situation too politically incorrect to discuss honestly or openiy.

The male arm has a different elbow that gives him advantage in the straight punch, thrust or grab while the crooked elbow of the human female has advantage for holding small items (like babies) in the crook of the arm yet does not give as good leverage for hoisting large loads, like the bodies of female assault victims

A wonan’s best defense is a ready to fire gun pointed at the center of a man’s body at least a few feet distant.

It is the great equalizer

entagor on December 19, 2008 at 8:09 PM

LOL all true but the “/gunophobic wank” command line shows that it was in fact a joke.

Amendment X on December 19, 2008 at 10:37 AM

One of many excellent points made in this thread. (to which, i’m four days late, but…)

Joe may be partially correct in his recommendation, I’ve heard The Mossad has had some great successes with these.

But even with the best weapon of its kind, their success depended on tactics and tactician, not tool.

A mag,or two full of .22 LRHPs to the back of a Hamas head will do the job well enough. But you better have a very well trained asset, or two, doing that job.
.22s being rimfire aren’t as reliable as a center-fire cartridge. Tap-rack-bang practice is SOP with center-fire,and even more important with rimfire.

Unless one can successfully make six to ten round head shots, against a probably armed, in the room, and with the element of surprise in his favor, assailant, stay away from .22s as primary self-defense weapons.

My home preference is 9mm within reach. 12 ga within (fast) walking distance.

My prayer is to never have to use either one.

MC made a good point about using the handgun to fight to the long gun, but, like you, I’m a bit fuzzy on the HD use of rifles.
For somebody in a rural area, yeah WTH. But in suburban/urban populations, rifles have way too much penetration.

As far as the actual thread topic; seems to me this is a case where everybody did the right thing.
The woman. A kind this country needs more of.
The Police. Who apparently acted professionally, and supportively.
The DA. Who rightfully refused to press charges.
The rapist. Who justifiably got shot and died.

But as others have commented, a sad part of the story is she didn’t have the shotgun the first time.

But the saddest part of the story is, his first victim didn’t have a shotgun.
