A truly great conservative is lost. It must have been hard for him to watch the destruction of the GOP and the conservative movement in the last ten plus years after all the effort he made to spread the conservative ideology.

I agree. Weyrich was admirable in so many ways. His pioneering work at The Heritage Foundation is a long-lasting gift to conservatism.

What did he die of? I hope I pass away before having to deal with amputations due to disease at an old age.

Yes, he was ill. He’d been in a wheelchair for a number of years, and I believe had his legs amputated recently as well. Not sure about the nature of the illness or injury, however.

As a Wisconsin grad myself, and one who had been involved in our small, but vocal campus conservative groups, he will be sorely missed.

My dad is still POed about the people like Weyrich who torpedoed John Tower’s nomination for SecDef. Dad was a conservative Texas Dem at the time (now he’s a Repub). He really liked Tower and thought he was treated horribly.

Anyway, I’m sure Weyrich was doing what he thought was right, and he was an effective leader in many ways. May he rest in peace.

I had an email conversation with him about 8 years ago when he said that Jesse Ventura was a libertarian. I emailed him to say that talk show guest Jesse was quite different than Gov Jesse. That because he didn’t call himself Democrat or a Republican didn’t make him a libertarian.
It was an interesting email exchange.
Another one of those to whom we owe much.
My sympathies and condolences to his family.

He spent four decades as an uncompromising and often controversial figure in American politics, fighting for conservatism and helping to expand its intellectual base.

This is the mistake everyone makes: Conservatism is not controversial liberalism is. Wish we had a dozen more just like him, but he leaves a great legacy.
