Palin: No pay raise for me, thanks

posted at 6:51 pm on December 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

Good politics, good sense. She was absent from the state for two months; she got a monster raise just two years ago; state revenue is down thanks to the crash in oil prices; and the polish this will put on her fiscal conservative cred is worth more than the money anyway, especially with Blago in the news.

A new state commission appointed by Palin recommends boosting the governor’s pay from $125,000 to $150,000. The State Officers Compensation Commission says the lieutenant governor, department heads and legislators need more money too.

But if the commission pushes ahead with a pay raise, Palin won’t accept the money, said spokesman Bill McAllister.

“Her view is, it’s just not appropriate to accept a pay raise in the middle of the term.”…

It’s unclear if Palin would give the money to charity — as commission chairman Rick Halford predicted Tuesday — or simply not receive the extra pay.

Pay raises should go only to politicians who have excelled above and beyond all expectations — like, say, Congress. Exit question: How is this stupid, corrupt, and/or venal? An obvious explanation eludes me but I’ll be watching Olby and Maddow tonight to find out.

All the comments I said in the headline thread apply here too. To recap: Sarah rocks. The ADN sucks. The Alaska legislature is now stuck with not accepting the raise or looking like jerks. They can’t take it after the governor personally rejected it.

Our ‘favorite’ female conservative Kathleen Parker once said that ‘the only cardinal sin in secular civilization is HYPOCRISY.’ The lefties are beside themselves in trying to prove Sarah is a hypocrite and not being to find any evidence that she is. Their consolation: they have 4 years to dig up some dirt. Good luck!

technopeasant on December 18, 2008 at 7:12 PM

She won’t need a raise. She probably got plenty of options to get paid now that she went national. Her days of skimming per diems are over.

While on the campaign trail she was still serving as governor and fulfilling all of her duties as governor. You might have noticed the two BlackBerries she carried with her everywhere.

She’s not independently wealthy. She actually needs her salary. Do you begrudge a person their paycheck?

Just take a look at some of the comments here. They’re already bringing up per diems (which are legal and ethical, and hers are less than her predecessors), and if that fails, they are saying that she doesn’t need the money now because somehow she’s now “rich” because everyone in the world knows her name.

This woman could find the cure for cancer, and the left would accuse her of putting cancer specialists out of work!

By the way, she could become a grandmother this weekend.

ramrocks on December 18, 2008 at 7:51 PM

Yeah, the Trig Truthers are all panting over this at Palin’s Deceptions. They have been analyzing news footage of the Palin family attending church at the Wasilla Middle School after the arson attack on the parishioners at her church. They have somehow now become convinced that Bristol’s pregnancy is faked.

(Apparently she was really pregnant while her mother was faking pregnancy, but now she’s faking it as some kind of alibi that she couldn’t be Trig’s mom. You’ll get a headache if you try to follow their logic.)

In between analyzing photos, they come up with other brilliant analyses – for example, did you know the reason that Sarah doesn’t live in the Governor’s Mansion is so that the “domestic staff” can’t steal her used tampons for DNA analysis?

Jim62sch on December 18, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Noneya: how many ways do you have to say it that Sarah returned all the pieces of wardrobe that the RNC bought for her and her family to be used during the campaign? Sarah and family kept nothing, nil, nada.

technopeasant on December 18, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Sarah is for real…another example of her integrity. She is so unlike most politicians and people, who from what I am seeing are getting more desensitized, cold hearted and selfish. They were all obsessed for a while that Bristol was ‘hiding’ from them. I posted a comment that she wasn’t hiding, she had been traveling with the campaign (this was mentioned in a couple of pool reports) but that the campaign had obviously made a gentlemen’s agreement with the press about pictures of her. I tried to point out that the press obviously felt that satisfying the crazy curiosity of Trig Truthers was not a legitimate reason for to publish pictures of a 17 year old girl. I never checked to see if it got through.

Dudes, I just discovered where the trolls get the mother-lode of their nonsense. This article was linked up on the HuffPost and everywhere else. My favorite part was the assertion that she’s done nothing to help her state’s energy infrastructure… Gee, the writer must have overlooked the matter of that natural gas pipeline, and the AGIA requirements that call for access points in Alaska, which will lower the cost of energy for Alaskans. And he forgot the stuff about Alaskan jobs. The writer insists that Palin has done “nothing”. Ethics reform, a renegotiated severance tax plan, and a natural gas pipeline are “nothing”. Oh, and he has choice quotes to prove that she’s “stupid”.

The writer then goes on to insist that the Alaskan legislature move to impeach her over the Troopergate fiasco. He demands that they do it first thing this January. Stay tuned for the moonbats to push for her impeachment in the coming New Year. They will not be satisfied until she is inside the burning church, if you get my meaning.

What’s interesting is the accusations they toss at her: arrogant, narcissistic, lying ego-maniac, etc. What alternate universe are they living in?

Check out the crazy article and register at the site so you can post comments. Though I must warn you, reading the article gives you a sort of Alice through the Looking Glass experience. It’s like you’ve been transported to the alternate reality where Spock has a goatee and Palin is Blagojevich with a better hairdo.

ramrocks on December 18, 2008 at 8:42 PM

That guy gave me a headache. I would say that with the whole Tasergate thing that she would have been better served to have taken a day to call her staff into her office to find out the facts. Then the next morning she should have made an upfront apology taking responsibility for all of it. Even though it was her husband and her staff, and that budget issues were the reason for the firing. Send the message that the buck stops here, and I take full responsibility for my staff’s actions. Then she should have noisily fired a couple of them. That would have made it much harder for the legislature to trump the whole thing up, and put a much quicker end to it. That’s basically what she’s done with the pay raise. She took a day to look at the commission’s recommendations, saw that it was a political minefield, and nipped it in the bud before it got off the ground.

“They violate state policy — at least that’s the prima facie view of things,” Mr. McAllister said in a telephone interview. “They’re not state business, and obviously they are offensive, and clearly she doesn’t support that. And she does not support racism, and she does not support attacks on the president-elect.”

I am a fan of Petraeus, so don’t get me wrong. But career generals just don’t make good Republican politicians. They’re too used to authoritarian solutions and going with the flow of prevailing politics. Look at Colin Powell for an example. But I could support him for VP or SecDef, no problem.

When was the last good general-turned-politician we had? Even Ike was not that great from a conservative point of view. (He was only good compared to FDR.)

The more I look at history, the more I realize that George Washington was a truly unique person.
