Time opts for the obvious
posted at 10:02 am on December 17, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
How much suspense awaited Time Magazine’s Person of the Year issue? About as much as we had in the second half of the USC-Notre Dame game:
In one of the craziest elections in American history, he overcame a lack of experience, a funny name, two candidates who are political institutions and the racial divide to become the 44th President of the United States. …
It’s unlikely that you were surprised to see Obama’s face on the cover. He has come to dominate the public sphere so completely that it beggars belief to recall that half the people in America had never heard of him two years ago — that even his campaign manager, at the outset, wasn’t sure Obama had what it would take to win the election. He hit the American scene like a thunderclap, upended our politics, shattered decades of conventional wisdom and overcame centuries of the social pecking order. Understandably, you may be thinking Obama is on the cover for these big and flashy reasons: for ushering the country across a momentous symbolic line, for infusing our democracy with a new intensity of participation, for showing the world and ourselves that our most cherished myth — the one about boundless opportunity — has plenty of juice left in it.
Racial divide? Didn’t this election prove that our racial divide had moved to the past? Barack Obama didn’t win from the black vote — he won a majority of white voters as well. While racism will never get completely stamped out, it has thankfully faded out of our public life. That was a prerequisite to victory, not a result of it. Had there actually been a racial divide in our public life, Barack Obama wouldn’t have won the nomination, let alone the election. Maybe Time should think about that.
Otherwise, their POY issue only underscores the obvious. No one dominated this year like Barack Obama, in the US and probably around the world. That doesn’t connote a value judgment on Obama himself, although it might on the media that promoted him. It acknowledges the reality of Obama’s impact on 2008, and it also follows a Time tradition of naming presidents-elect as POY.
- Henry Paulson. Yeah, right. For what — begging Nancy Pelosi to rescue his bailout plan that he himself later abandoned completely? Pass.
- Nicolas Sarkozy – Had John McCain won, he may have been the best choice. Sarkozy represents a new kind of French leadership, a type we haven’t seen in … well, we haven’t seen at all. He may change the direction of European diplomacy, economics, and strategic defense.
- Sarah Palin – Again, if McCain won, perhaps — although she was really only a story for three months of the year. I suspect she’ll get more opportunities down the road.
- Zhang Yimou – Who? Oh, he designed China’s Olympic opening ceremonies. Yeah, he had more impact on 2008 than people like David Petraeus, Nouri al-Maliki, Yousef Gilani, Ali Zardari, George Bush, and others who didn’t design state pomp in defense of oppression. Only Steven Spielberg could be this relentlessly clueless.

In a presidential election year, Time always picks the winner for person of the year. They even picked GWB in 2004, I’m sure as a matter of maintaining the tradition and not because they really wanted to. But there you have it.

They had to use an image that hearkens (yes I said hearkens) back to the Soviet-communist era? Why not just a photo of the guy?
And this quote, “he overcame lack of experience and a funny name”; so TIME™ is admitting Obarfy lacks experience and takes a shot at his name?

Osama bin Laden certainly garnered the most news coverage of 2001 and he only had four months to do it. If being covered in the news is the prerequisite, why didn’t he get chosen in that year?
Bishop on December 17, 2008 at 10:13 AM
I wouldn’t expect them to have picked anyone else! They were and still are in his pocket after all….he doesn’t need to pay for advertising because he has the whole main stream media to give him all the free advertising he wants! Anyone else wonder why only the Chicago Tribune is researching his connections with Blago? It’s only obvious to me!

While out shopping, I am absolutely flabbergasted by the amount of Obama merchandise displays. They’re in the calendar store, the book store, the little kiosks filled with trinkets and t-shirts. I even noticed a little presidential flip-card book, with Obama’s head front and center (personally, I feel a book about our past presidents should start with Washington). This crap is everywhere, and people are buying it in droves. It’s a bit disturbing, to say the least.
My husband and I have also noticed what we’re calling “Obamabunny Bumpers” – in our respective areas, we’ve noticed an increase of Obama bumperstickers, plastered on cars *after* the election. There are so many now, we joke they’re breeding like rabbits. I’ll say this: Obama may deserve to be the Man of the Year, if only because he’s been so successful at duping such a large amount of people. I’ll give the con man a smidgen of credit when it is due.

Dave Ryall and Tom show that we do live in the “United States of Amnesia”. As pronounced by Gore Vidal and others whom I enjoy. Look at Time’s prior recipients:
From TIME Jan. 06, 1936
In 1935 Europe’s perennial Men of the Years, Stanley Baldwin, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Kamal Ataturk and Dr. Eduard Benes held undiminished sway. The outstanding exhibition of the century in French political tight-rope walking was given in 1935 but as the year entered its last hours the fate of Premier Pierre Laval, 1931′S Man of the Year, continued to tiptoe (see p. 18). In Asia practical control of North China was obtained by Japan in 1935 so adroitly and inconspicuously that it was a major Japanese triumph to have avoided producing a Man of the Year. China’s perpetually harassed Man of the Year, Generalissimo Chiang Kaishek, entered his most excruciating morass of dilemmas.

Vladimir Putin is trying to get the band back together, as it were, stirring up trouble wherever he can. 0 Time covers in 2008.
Pope Benedict makes a landmark visit to the United States , addresses the UN and publishes multiple important papers. 1 Time cover in 2008.
Michael Phelps sets the record for Olympic gold medals – 0 Time covers.
Steve Jobs named one of the 10 most influential business men – 0 Time covers.
Paul Newman passes away – 0 Time covers. Ditto for Randy Pausch & Tim Russert.
All of these people made significant news/contributions in 2008 and there was only one cover in Time. On the other hand, a guy who has never held a full-time job and doesn’t seem to have any experience with, well, anything other than writing autobiographies is on 12 Time covers not including the POY issue.

Time has always excused their “Man of the Year” awards in the past to people like Adolph Hitler and Osama bin Ladin by saying it’s not a popularity contest; it’s only a recognition of how much EFFECT, good or bad, an individual has had.
But Barack Obama hasn’t actually accomplished ANYTHING in this past year, or in any previous year of his life. Granted, I firmly believe that Barack Hussein Obama may well have more effect in the next four years than his namesake or any other previous Time winner ever did. But all he’s ever done so far is collect accolades. And ironically, this latest accolade is the emptiest of them all – even including winning the Presidency based solely on his skin color and offer of “hope”.
logis on December 17, 2008 at 11:38 AM

So instead of analyzing WHY we’re mocking this selection. Or in my case, agreeing with the selection but still mocking it. You decide to make some asinine comments about “Hey, rednecks, they do this every year.”
Well you convinced me, Einstein. You just soooo much smarterer than me and anything I think I’ll pass by you to make sure it’s in perfect lockstep with you and thus acceptable for public consumption!!!
Thanks for taking the burden of my thinking for myself away!!!

It’s as if you weren’t an antagonistic left-wing Canuck troll on an American right-wing blog.

Um, no. Of course we all know it comes out every year, and almost every year it succeeds in being stupid.
What I think you haven’t quite figured out is that that’s not the funny part. It’s all the idiots who still take Time magazine seriously.

As if all of you aren’t going to get ulcers over the next 4 years complaining about every. Single. Thing.
Next.

At least things matter enough in our country to get ulcers over. You get ulcers when the maple syrup supply runs low.

I’m sure I can speak for most of us here when I say we are concerned about our families and the health and safety of our wives and children. You know, things that really matter.
The last thing we will ever worry about, to the point where it gives us ulcers, is some freakin loser sitting in the White House, standing in front of his mirror admiring how wonderful he is.
Unlike you, we don’t look at Obama as some God-like creature. We won’t lose any sleep over his stumbling and bumbling in the years ahead. Ulcers? No way. But we might crack a few ribs laughing at his incompetence as he plays the role of POTUS.
