Video: The somewhat obligatory “Wolverine” trailer
posted at 4:52 pm on December 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
Provided as a public service, notwithstanding my own disinterest in/contempt for superhero movies, for those of you who saw and cared about the X-Men flicks. From what I gather, this Wolverine fellow has a body-hair problem and is angry about something or other having to do with the war and somehow ends up in a magical solution so that he can grow steel blades in his knuckles, hm? Well, that’s just super. You have a good time with that next year! I’ll be waiting for “Westworld.”

Westworld? How they gonna top Yul Brenner shooting James Brolin?

Getting a little liberal with the “obligatory” tag….

I liked the first two films a lot.
V15J on December 16, 2008 at 5:00 PM
No. He is a mutant with natural claws (i.e., of bone) and has adamantium (a fictional metal which is virtually indestructible) bonded with his skeleton. He other mutant abilities are a rapid healing factor and heightened senses.
Thus, he is almost unstoppable – his bones cannot be broken, his claws can cut through most anything, he can hear or smell enemies even when hidden, and he can recover from almost any injury.
His anger comes from the brutal experiments and the training/brainwashing he received as part of the Weapon X project. He is one of the most interesting superheros ever conceived.

Don’t hate, that dude is hosting the Oscars this year.

This should read – “His other…”.
TexasAg03 on December 16, 2008 at 5:02 PM
As I always understood it, the claws were added on at the facility that covered the bone with the adamantium? Either way, Wolvie was always the coolest!
JamesLee on December 16, 2008 at 5:03 PM
I just hate the bad military image. Soldiers are good people.

$15 billion for failed automakers, but a half-billion for an indestructible superhero.

I’d like to buy tickets to the Hugh Jackman Gun Show, please.
*swoon*
Anna on December 16, 2008 at 5:05 PM
Wasn’t that remade about 7 years ago? Will Smith was in it?
toliver on December 16, 2008 at 5:07 PM
There was a story line several years ago where Magneto went crazy on Wolverine and pulled the adamantium from his skeleton. Once Wolverine recovered, he discovered that his claws were part of his body. Also, without the adamantium, he healed much more quickly.
I quit collecting comics sometime after that, so I don’t know how the adamantium was replaced. I assume they duplicated the initial process. The healing factor also slows his aging – he was born in the late 1800s.
More here.
TexasAg03 on December 16, 2008 at 5:08 PM
He used to think that, but he was born with them. And yes, I’m a comic nerd.

Then you will be thrilled to learn that there are actually 3 X-Men films!

I believe you are thinking of the Wild Wild West. A movie that sucked IMO.
The re-make of Westworld is due out in 2009. And yes aquaviva, it will be mighty hard to replace Yul Brenner…at any role.

Wild Wild Westworld?

Christian Bale shooting Josh Brolin?
pseudonominus on December 16, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Marvel has finally gotten enough money to make their own films based off their I.P. All the new movies will be made in house with other studios just handling the distribution.
For too long Hollywood has ruined rather complex, intricate and engaging characters and stories (that just happen to be presented with images instead of just text). Prime example is X-Men 3 or Spiderman 3. Both sucked hard. But take a look at the more recent Marvel movies (Iron Man) and you can see what happens when the I.P. is treated with respect and not twisted with Hollywoods “improvements”.
Another great thing that will be seen more often is cross overs from each film. Just as Tony Stark was in Hulk, and S.H.I.E.L.D was introduced in Iron Man, there will be more and more ‘guest appearances’ and minor roles in future films.
I loved comics when I was a kid, and will enjoy seeing them come alive on the screen over the next few years. I believe Thor and Captain America are up for 2009 or 2010.
Voidseeker on December 16, 2008 at 5:32 PM
I stopped going to theaters a few years ago, and get what I want from Netflix. I figured that any movie could wait a few months until available on DVD. What I notice now is that the majority of movies I actually enjoy are in black and white, or technicolor – in other words, made twenty or more years ago.
Vashta.Nerada on December 16, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Oh my, Hugh Jackman that man does have something
Bridgette on December 16, 2008 at 5:36 PM
If they replace Yul Brynner with Vin Diesel or one of the other many de-nutted talentless thugs that infest Hollywood like maggots in roadkill, I’m going to send a strongly worded letter of protest to my local entertainment paper.
As to the clip, very nice. I’ve enjoyed Hugh Jackman’s portrayl of Wolverine in all of the movies; the others were rather bland, except for Magneto, although Nightcrawler wasn’t too bad. Looks to be a bit edgier and meaner than the X-men movies, which I think is a good thing.
And please, don’t mention Wild Wild West; I saw it once and I still have brain cells trying to die. Whoever came up with the giant mechanical spider needs to be shot by Yul Brynner…I mean, I love bad movies but that was a bloody travesty.
austinnelly on December 16, 2008 at 5:38 PM
That’s right, your birthday is this month too.
I’m sure it’ll be a nice present. It looks like a good movie.

geckomon on December 16, 2008 at 5:40 PM
My daughter has been sadistically counting down to it too, as if I was excited about it. I loved Sin City and especially 300 (yowza!), so I’m hoping it won’t let me down.
Speaking of Yul Brynner – he was awesome in the King and I. : )

Aww. You’re too young to not be excited. I’ll be 27 next Friday, and I’m still excited about it.
It’s not like when I was younger though. I have a friend whose birthday is a week after mine, so we used to each have a full birthday week. That person would get shotgun (if we wanted it), first sip of a shared drink, etc.

This looks great. Wolverine WWI era? Cool. Why do I get the feeling his origins are going to be changed from Canadian to American though? Oh well.
alex342 on December 16, 2008 at 5:57 PM
Cool. Wolverine, Gambit, and Sabertooth.
Like the Stan Lee comics, the movies not so much.
I guess I’ll give this one a shot. Wolverine and Gambit were my favorite characters in the X-Men series.
jencab on December 16, 2008 at 5:59 PM
I love Gambit and was honestly disappointed that he wasn’t in the other movies.
Esthier on December 16, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Correct. X-Men 3 was terrible, primarily because Brian Singer (director of the first two movies) opted to take on Superman Returns instead of X-3.

His Marvel back story was that he was in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion that landed on D-Day but they’ve obviously got him landing on the beach.

Gambit was persona non grata to the big super hero fan among my friends. Apparently, he was very irritated that Gambit seemed to have “Cajun power.”
Ah, well. I’ve become suspicious that the whole superhero genre is subconsciously totalitarian and elitist. It irritates me the way the US military gets no respect.

How dare they remake Robocop! One of the seminal films of the 1980s! Soderbergh once said to only remake bad films, as in Ocean’s 11. The original was okay but the remakes were good. George Lucas anyone? Anyone?
KillerKane on December 16, 2008 at 6:44 PM
…actual literate movies — not intellectual cinderblocks made by some effite leftie, slathering a Victorian novella with collectivist Marxist environmental guilt — are dead.
…we’re all forced to read comic books nowadays…and, yes, “grapic novels” are nothing more than thick, overpriced comic books….
…I gave up comics when I sold/traded/gifted away my own collection about the same time I hit the reproductive-imperative part of puberty…and haven’t looked back….
…now, today, finding a movie that isn’t at least partly based in angsty pulp is getting hard to do…I’m sure that Merchant is dead…Ivory may be as well…and only Andrew Davies seems to take literature seriously any more….
…and woe betide history once Hollywood casts a jaundiced eye its way…it shreds actual events into a mere “based on” bastard…witness the “Pearl Harbor” betrayal, “based on” the Pearl Harbor betrayal….
…so, juvenile movies based on comic books…movies built on fart jokes treating us to the ever-suave Jack Black…another deeply dark cry-for-help from the disturbed and disturbing Mr. Burton…Adam Sandler, insulting human intelligence en masse….
…oh!, for a Babs Stanwyk…oh! for another Irving Thalberg…Lord Larry, my man…you picked the right time to die….
…Hollywood, it seems, is more about dew-deep leftie collectivist totalitarianism than it is about entertainment today…given the earnings of the anti-Iraq War herd of turkeys and the projected earnings of Cruise’s “Valkyrie”, it isn’t even about the money anymore…Warner and Mayer and ol’ Mr. Laemmle should be spinning in their graves….
Puritan1648 on December 16, 2008 at 6:49 PM
I completely agree, but that’s a theme for nearly every movie, super hero films have sometimes been the minority against that mentality.
Transformers, for instance, had military men as some of the heroes of the film.
Well, that’s a little bit of an understatement. I think he was tortured for experiments, but I don’t recall him ever going into a murderous rage. That’s likely taken out of context (or not, if I recall correctly, they do experiment on him long enough to turn him into an animal).
Esthier on December 16, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Apparrently, Allahpundit is unaware of the distinction between “DISinterest” and “UNinterest” [emphasis mine]. This being one of my pet language peeves, I will enlighten:
AP, while you are no doubt truly DISinterested in superhero movies, in that you have no stake (material, financial or otherwise) in their success, I believe that you mean that you are UNinterested – meaning that they do not engage your interest emotionally.
Please don’t get these confused; this error makes my eye twitch. And I hate it when my eye gets a-twitchin’…
kiltedscotsman5 on December 16, 2008 at 6:50 PM
Perhaps someone will correct me if I am mistaken, but I was under the impression that Wolverine was war buddies with Captain America.
eaglescout1998 on December 16, 2008 at 6:55 PM
Oh, yeah, which is why I think I can tell you how you’re supposed to think. :)
I get that kids change the entire equation, though oddly enough it’s the fact that I don’t yet have kids that makes me feel old (biological clock and all).
Esthier on December 16, 2008 at 6:59 PM
The only problems with Jackman as Wolverine are A) he’s handsome, and B) he’s 6’4″. The whole idea behind Wolverine is he’s small (5’3″), mean and ugly–like a wolverine.
The comics ruined Wolverine for me when they depicted him with bone, rather than manufactured, claws. I’m a bit worried to see that bit has made it into the film.
Blacklake on December 16, 2008 at 7:08 PM
Two things:
- this looks like unfathomable dreck, and
- is there a single movie with our military involved that doesn’t make them all out to be pathological murderers further corrupted by the evil government? Of course not.
Jaibones on December 16, 2008 at 7:16 PM
looks good, but I hope it’s better that the X-men sequels. The first one was ok but they went downhill quick
jdsmith0021 on December 16, 2008 at 7:21 PM
I wasn’t an X-men fanboy, so I don’t know how true this movie will be to the “official origin.” I hope they don’t stray too much.
One thing I have never figured out with Hollywood is why they don’t hire the comic book writers to author the stories or screenplays for these types of movies. They get these other writers who have no respect for the back story of the characters and they screw it all up.
One of the positive aspects of Heroes is that Tim Kring and Jeph Loeb have comic book background. The stories stay true to the genre.
Mallard T. Drake on December 16, 2008 at 7:35 PM
The same thing happened with the ST:TNG films and they sucked as a result.
alex342 on December 16, 2008 at 7:43 PM
The first three X-Men films might as well have been called
too.
He was the only character they cared about.
*yawn* Restart the franchise a la Batman Begins, and you’ve got my interest.
The travesty that was the third film sealed my contempt for anything related to it.
(But I’ll probably still see it. On DVD.)
Hawkins1701 on December 16, 2008 at 7:51 PM
I still can’t get over the slow, deliberate desecration of Cyclops from this franchise.
It would have been better to leave him out, than portray him as a brooding, angsty wimp who gets killed in the first 15 minutes of X3.
Um, guys? Cyclops kinda was the original leader of the X-Men.
He is, in my view, THE most important character to the X-Men mythos. He’s been there from the beginning, he’s led the team through it all, and he survived the death of his wife and went back to work. (That’s right, morons in charge of X3. He went BACK TO WORK leading the team after Jean Grey died. He didn’t hang up his suit and run away like a little bitch. Too bad he did in your joke of a film.)
Yeah, I’ve got some strong opinions on this, in case you couldn’t tell.

jgapinoy on December 16, 2008 at 8:53 PM
just cus Cyclops is supposedly “dead” doesn’t mean he is dead.. We never actually saw him die. Same with Phoenix..
The Phoenix storyline has been re-hashed throughout the X-Men comics.. I thought the movies did alright retelling them in their own way. My Favorite was the Fall of the Mutants stories from the late 80′s/early90′s.
Seriously though, dissing Wolverine is like dissing Batman or Superman… Wolverine has been voted over and over again as the most popular comic character of all time. Show some respect ya’ll..
This movie looks great.

AP, Just for reference The solution merely coated Wolverine’s bones in an Adamantium Alloy.
In the Comics we learned that his regenerative abilities and claws were a natural genetic mutation. Which is what allowed him to survive the metal bonding process…
The way we learned this is eventually Magneto uses his powers to rip the metal from Wolverine’s bones, but he still has the claws.
Jones Zemkophill on December 16, 2008 at 9:48 PM
Can’t wait to see Hugh Jackman in this flick!!! Did you notice that the actor at the end with the fangs, is the same actor that was with Jackman in the chick flick “Kate and Leopold”? His character brought Leopold from the past to the future.
Thor I am interested in-young girl crush.
Captain America-dead…would be really awkward to see him in a movie (after the comic killed him with a sniper).
Batman-dead…WHY in the world this was not brought up before? Over at the forums of DC they are spitting mad. They write (dunno about this) but that they copied that finale from another comic series, just replaced characters. If there is one person that could pull that stunt is the current director of this series.
There is a book that I want to have, I guess it is called something like “Book of the Dead” where there are all the characters that have been killed, complete profile and who-when they were killed. There is another book with current comic heroes, but alive and complete profile. Very interesting read!
ProudPalinFan on December 16, 2008 at 9:50 PM
Jones, so therefore he was already a mutant before the experiment? Did Wolverine know about this? Sounds a bit like Highlander to me.
Seems to me there is some confusion about the adamantium aspect of Wolverine; if the metal was ripped from the bones, bones could be broken but self-repaired due to mutant abilities?
Finally, are there any websites where scanned images of comic books can be seen?
