Video: Joe Scarborough rips the Tanning Bed Media

posted at 3:45 pm on December 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Via the Newsbusters, Joe Scarborough belatedly discovers the vast difference in how the media treated Barack Obama and Sarah Palin in this election.  As I mentioned a number of times, the national media rushed to Wasilla to cover the gripping saga of Palin’s used tanning bed while no one in two years bothered to do any investigative work on Obama and his Chicago connections.  Better late than never … well, not really:

The best part of the exchange? Mainstream media reporters Mike Barnicle and John Harwood defending ignorance:

SCARBOROUGH: OK, then tell me this–yeah, Lizza’s the only one that wrote about it and he got kicked off the campaign plane. So here’s my question for you: if we know so much about this, answer this question. Did Barack Obama, was Barack Obama intimately involved in Blagojevich’s 2002 campaign?

HARWOOD: He was involved, I don’t know how intimately.

SCARBOROUGH: Why? Why don’t you know that?

HARWOOD: I’m not sure how to factor out the BS quotient in that quote you were talking about.

SCARBOROUGH: Why can’t you factor that out?

HARWOOD: Well, because it’s not a story I personally covered.

SCARBOROUGH: I know, but why didn’t somebody investigate this six months ago when Ryan Lizza wrote it? It’s pretty fascinating, because in 2008 we knew he was the most corrupt governor in America.

MIKE BARNICLE: Let me put my newspaper columnist/newspaper editor hat on for you to answer your question about Wasilla, Alaska as opposed to the Blagojevich administration.

SCARBOROUGH: Not Blagojevich–Barack Obama.

BARNICLE: Whatever. She was the next, new face. No one had ever heard of her. So you’re going to send as many people as you can afford up to Alaska to explain to the reading public who she is. You’re sitting there, you know Obama, you know the governor of Illinois –

SCARBOROUGH: You don’t know Obama. You can’t even tell me whether he ran the 2002 campaign of the most corrupt governor in America.

BARNICLE: I can tell you this much: he was a state senator then, and he ran that campaign about as much as I did.

SCARBOROUGH: Oh really? How do you know that?

BARNICLE: Just instinct.

SCARBOROUGH: Instinct?

BARNICLE: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH [at moment of screencap]: Newspaper editor: shouldn’t we have facts instead of instinct? That’s what everybody’s working on: instinct! You know what? I like him! So I expect that he’s a really good guy. I hope if I ever run for politics again, I am given this much benefit of the doubt.

Barack Obama was the new guy in 2007, to answer Harwood’s assertion personally. Why didn’t anyone bother then to give him the Palin treatment? I’d suggest that, at least in part, no one expected Obama to win the nomination. He became a good story as a counterweight to the overwhelming assumption that Hillary Clinton was going to have a coronation as the party nominee. By the time Obama looked like a threat, no one seemed interested in ruining a good story.

On the other hand, Palin came almost out of nowhere (we covered her extensively here at Hot Air as a dark-horse VP possibility), and they had nine weeks to build a story line rather than two years. Of course, that meant that the Tanning Bed Media couldn’t operate off of “instinct” or “feelings” and just let Palin define herself the way they allowed Obama to do for himself. No, the TBM had to airdrop dozens of reporters into Alaska to dig up dirt on her.

Scarborough actually lets these two get off much too easily. The “instinct” argument displays obvious and objectionable bias. They should be embarrassed.

Embarrassed?

Oblivious.

Anyone who gets their news from the MSM is woefully uninformed.

The news needs to be vetted after being delivered by the inept clown acts in the MSM. Thank god we have actual adults who can do so, rather than the usual DNC errand boys and girls we get in the MSM.

It’s not a matter of instinct. It’s a matter of the unusual, but very powerful, dog-like coitus. Scarborough doesn’t come close to Obama, and he ought to know it. The media will be in that state for about 2 years, and then they will be spent and farked into oblivion. Let them.

Anyone who doesn’t treat the TBMedia as an organized criminal conspriracy is a fool or worse. Scarbo is a fool, however well-intentioned.

Those media POS cretins who went to Wasilla digging through Sarah’s trash won’t go up there now to see which ‘gay’ group set fire to her church.

the Long Knives need to come out, and get busy…………

Janos Hunyadi on December 16, 2008 at 3:59 PM

It all just stinks. Can you imagine Congress or the press accepting an “internal” review by the Bush administration as an acceptable investigation of possible wrong-doing?

Special prosecutor needed please, then impeach.

Meanwhile, Sen. McCain increases his status as the ultimate lap dog for the President elect.

Scarborough better watch out. He could end up in Ft. Marcie Park for suggesting something opposing the immaculate conception of The One.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how the press sits there like lap dogs at these press conferences. His majesty takes 3 or 4 questions, and they sit there like Oliver Twist afraid to ask demand more?

Today, he had the audacity to tell the one reporter he was going to “waste” his one question, if he continued to ask about the scandal…

His arrogance is unreal.

I don’t mind the media going to Alaska to check out the good governor (though Sullivan needs to go away for a long, long time). But howzabout a bit of balance, and looking into Dear Leader’s past. Just imagine the great story you could write about the only politician to rise through Chicago politics and remain unstained by such a cesspool.

doufree on December 16, 2008 at 4:01 PM

McCain can take Barney’s job, and the fine people of Arizona can elect a real Republican in his place. The Obamas will find the joy of adopting a pet from Congress… the creature is at least neutered, comes with a first rate health plan, but you need to comb it for fleas and update its shots.

chunderroad on December 16, 2008 at 4:05 PM

I wouldn’t call Mike Barnicle a journalist under any circumstances. Given his record of plagerism at the Boston Globe, he is more of a “copy boy” than a journalist.

RedSoxNation on December 16, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Do you think that the MSM even cares? And, what happens when Obama does something “wrong”?

Geministorm on December 16, 2008 at 4:06 PM

I mean, it’s just the Presidency, nothing important, the Vice Presidency is more important, my instinct tells me.

Inspector Clouseau had instincts as well! It told him…things, yes yes, things that werea going ona. Yes yes.

benrand on December 16, 2008 at 4:06 PM

The only consolation I take from Obama’s win is the MSM has come across as so biased no one takes them seriously any more. No wonder more of the MSM file for bankruptcy every day.

dengar007 on December 16, 2008 at 4:06 PM

That was awesome and so true!! The liberals only response to the Blagojevitch scandal is either (1) that the prosecutor has already said that Obama wasn’t involved in the allegations set forth in the complaint; so end of story; or (2) that Obama will disclose all of the relevant information concerning any discussions between his team and Blagojevitch when he is good and ready. Until then, it’s inappropriate to ask any questions of Obama or any members of his team. I feel like Rip Van Winkle and slept through the transition of the US government from a democracy to a monarchy/dictatorship.

Callie C. on December 16, 2008 at 4:08 PM

The fun is JUST starting. Within one year, Obama is going to up to his eyeballs in screw-ups and scandals. The teflon will come off, in time. It will be entertaining to watch!

Star20 on December 16, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Last I remember Mike Barnicle’s instinct was to fabricate stories for the Boston Globe, ending up with him unceremoneously being shown the door.

He’d probably be better served doing some of that actual reporting stuff.

Newman65 on December 16, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Well, Barnicle is a documented liar so do we really care about anything he says?

The key to this whole thing will be whether anyone pursues Rahm for the Blago mess. He lied too and if the MSM decides to call him on it, he will be gone before Obama turns the White House into Showtime at the Apollo.

Of course, the MSM will not turn on Rahm so soon. They will turn on him but he’ll get to move into the White House and keep his new gig as long as he plays ball with them.

I don’t feel sorry for him but The Black Caesar is f’ed before he even gets a chance to start. That may be a good thing but the people that are sticking it too him are actually worse humans. Pelosi, Reid and the MSM are the three headed monster that will not go down easy. Well, that spineless coward, Reid will but he’s still attached to the body of Pelosi and the media.

Hilts on December 16, 2008 at 4:19 PM

As I noted yesterday, the key to that show was not Scarborough, but the fact that Mica was showing belated skepticism about the media’s handling of the Precedent-Elect’s campaign. She was the one on Morning Joe who had really been BHO’s great defender and for her to crack is the true warning sign.

Even Mica Brezsinski is getting skeptical about the idiot messiah over this story. She actually mocked the MSM for having gone to Wasilla, en force, to check out Trig’s birth circumstances, while ignoring the Chicago cesspool of politics that the Precedent-Elect came out of. They were ripping BHO apart on MSNBC Morning Joe, with Barnacle and some twerp lefty reporter trying to excuse BHO, pathetically, while Joe Scarborough mocked their attempts. No one could explain why BHO is silent, without implying that something is very wrong. Hmmmm. The dam is starting to show some cracks and the rats are going to be scurrying, soon, methinks.

MSNBC is about the worst one out there. CBS, NBC, and ABC are right behind. You would think those idiots would recognize that the net is taking away their market and they need to produce a quality product in order to compete. Instead, their product is trash and getting worse.

the dumbing down of the American public is right on track. More ignorant deadheads every day and fewer self reliant producers. Victims and entitlement mentality is expanding full speed ahead, and personal responsiblity is evaporating at an alarming rate. The standards for individual character are dropping like a rock, and we will be judged by the content of our character. Who are really the disenfranchised people of America? Those who pull the wagon or those that ride in the wagon.

saltydogg14 on December 16, 2008 at 5:12 PM

If you really want to know how far to the left the mainstream media is, think back over the last couple of days and count the number of stories about the shoe thrower that portrayed President Bush in a bad light and not the journalist shoe thrower.

That it happened was a disgrace, and the fact that the media kept showing to make President Bush look bad tells you all you’ll ever need to know about media bias.

i used to watch mj every morning as i was getting for work. when palin entered the race, they swarmed on her like a pit bull to a steak. joe went right along with them on 85-90% of the time. mika was drinking so much of the kook-aid, she had a permanent blue mustache. throw in shuster, and barnicle, add noonan-the-traitor, and you got one big rotten lump of morning gruel. they lost me permanently. he’s just posturing. traitor.

Isn’t the Chicago school system one of the worst in the United States?????

Not sure about that..But I’m pretty sure “The Annenberg Challenge” was pretty much a flop. Commanded by The One and The Toilet Bug that is Bill Ayers….

I for one have no confidence it his ability to judge the character or performance of any one.

He has yet to be involved in anything that hasn’t been an abysmal failure or is being kept afloat by outside funding…

Unless you want to include ACORN…

GahhHH!!!

I like the Gordon Lightfoot recording better than the Janice Joplin recording.

I don’t know how these people look themselves in the mirror. How would you wake up every day and look youself in the mirror knowing that you are destroying democracy. How do they look themselves in the mirror knowing that they have taken the special gift the founding fathers gave their profession and wiped they wiped their ass with it.
