Video: Joe Scarborough rips the Tanning Bed Media

Via the Newsbusters, Joe Scarborough belatedly discovers the vast difference in how the media treated Barack Obama and Sarah Palin in this election.  As I mentioned a number of times, the national media rushed to Wasilla to cover the gripping saga of Palin’s used tanning bed while no one in two years bothered to do any investigative work on Obama and his Chicago connections.  Better late than never … well, not really:

The best part of the exchange? Mainstream media reporters Mike Barnicle and John Harwood defending ignorance:

SCARBOROUGH: OK, then tell me this–yeah, Lizza’s the only one that wrote about it and he got kicked off the campaign plane. So here’s my question for you: if we know so much about this, answer this question. Did Barack Obama, was Barack Obama intimately involved in Blagojevich’s 2002 campaign?

HARWOOD: He was involved, I don’t know how intimately.

SCARBOROUGH: Why? Why don’t you know that?

HARWOOD: I’m not sure how to factor out the BS quotient in that quote you were talking about.

SCARBOROUGH: Why can’t you factor that out?

HARWOOD: Well, because it’s not a story I personally covered.

SCARBOROUGH: I know, but why didn’t somebody investigate this six months ago when Ryan Lizza wrote it? It’s pretty fascinating, because in 2008 we knew he was the most corrupt governor in America.

MIKE BARNICLE: Let me put my newspaper columnist/newspaper editor hat on for you to answer your question about Wasilla, Alaska as opposed to the Blagojevich administration.

SCARBOROUGH: Not Blagojevich–Barack Obama.

BARNICLE: Whatever. She was the next, new face. No one had ever heard of her. So you’re going to send as many people as you can afford up to Alaska to explain to the reading public who she is. You’re sitting there, you know Obama, you know the governor of Illinois –

SCARBOROUGH: You don’t know Obama. You can’t even tell me whether he ran the 2002 campaign of the most corrupt governor in America.

BARNICLE: I can tell you this much: he was a state senator then, and he ran that campaign about as much as I did.

SCARBOROUGH: Oh really? How do you know that?

BARNICLE: Just instinct.

SCARBOROUGH: Instinct?

BARNICLE: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH [at moment of screencap]: Newspaper editor: shouldn’t we have facts instead of instinct? That’s what everybody’s working on: instinct! You know what? I like him! So I expect that he’s a really good guy. I hope if I ever run for politics again, I am given this much benefit of the doubt.

Barack Obama was the new guy in 2007, to answer Harwood’s assertion personally. Why didn’t anyone bother then to give him the Palin treatment? I’d suggest that, at least in part, no one expected Obama to win the nomination. He became a good story as a counterweight to the overwhelming assumption that Hillary Clinton was going to have a coronation as the party nominee. By the time Obama looked like a threat, no one seemed interested in ruining a good story.

On the other hand, Palin came almost out of nowhere (we covered her extensively here at Hot Air as a dark-horse VP possibility), and they had nine weeks to build a story line rather than two years. Of course, that meant that the Tanning Bed Media couldn’t operate off of “instinct” or “feelings” and just let Palin define herself the way they allowed Obama to do for himself. No, the TBM had to airdrop dozens of reporters into Alaska to dig up dirt on her.

Scarborough actually lets these two get off much too easily. The “instinct” argument displays obvious and objectionable bias. They should be embarrassed.

Allrsn: Call me a pessimist, but I bet he will remain the teflon man for quite some time. The MSM and other kool aid drinkers will continue to support him no matter what and will also continue to attack “desparate” conservatives who dare to ask legitimate questions about Obama.

I’m afraid I have to agree. I wish I could think otherwise, but I can’t. Not after seeing the way they’ve treated him so far.

allahp and ed:

why didn’t MCCAIN go after this angle!?!? why did he stop with weak attacks on rezko-obama?!

i posted on obama and the chicago machine before super tuesday.

so the MSM ain’t the only guilty party here.

i posted on more than just rezko – using many links to many chicagio trib stories.

we know why the msm went to wasilla and didn’t cover it but what about MCCAIN!?!?!

BTW: the kennedy clan and biden owe A LOT tot he chicago machine. i posted on that, too – WAY BACK…

mjoran linked and so did a few others,

BUT MOST OF YOU BIG BLOGGER GUYS IGNORED IT.

i think you all wanted to take the high road to defeat rather than “the low road” to victory.

BUT:::

exposing folks like obama is NEVER the low road, no matter what it takes.

exposing wright, exposing blago… whatever.

bush had us fight in iraq and afghanistan with one hand behind our backs, and that’s how the gop and mccain and much of the right side of the blogosphere fought obama.

i pulled out all the stops and took “the low road”.

had more people followed we wouldn’t have elected an inexperienced corrupt ultra-lib psychopath.

The more I hear that and look at it, the more amazing it is. How concerned were they about the “BS quotient” when it came to Sarah Palin?

Reporters, on average, lie more that they report.

They’re just scum.

This is just example #9,347,814.

I really have a nearly unlimited supply of contempt for the dirtbag MSM, and in the last decade I’ve seen my scorn justified over and over and over again.

Merovign on December 16, 2008 at 11:36 PM

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating. The fact that I know when Sarah Palin’s water broke but don’t know whether Barack Obama took an economics class in college is insane.

Ain’t it?

Joe and Mica are really hammering the Precedent-Elect, again, this morning. Axelrod is actually going to be on later.

progressoverpeace on December 17, 2008 at 6:11 AM

The fact they had that adbreak fadein music going for so long.. doesn’t reflect well, put it that way.

If Scarborough keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to be off MSNBC is the near future. He explained, loudly, that it takes all of 5 minutes to do the “investigation” that the Precedent-Elect’s team is holding off for another week. He got his guests to admit that the Precedent-Elect’s team was doing nothing but trying to spin, because the truth is probably ugly. Then he just skewered some dork, Mark Halperin, from Time. The guy was almost crying. The other guest was too scared to open his mouth.

I know a lot of conservatives don’t like Scarborough, but he could really blow the public questioning of the idiot messiah wide open, since this is all coming out of MSNBC – if he keeps this up.

progressoverpeace on December 17, 2008 at 7:40 AM

Axelrod could only manage to call in on the phone to the show – not even a picture! He sounds pretty nervous, too. … very nervous. Joe is hitting him with decent questions and Axelrod is folding. Axelrod is just denying everything. Too funny.

progressoverpeace on December 17, 2008 at 8:40 AM

Axelrod is stuttering more than BHO and even using more uh’s than I’ve ever heard in my life.

REVOLT!!!! is is me or is Pat Buchanan REALLY looking

OLD

these days?

CynicalOptimist on December 17, 2008 at 12:00 PM

OMG! Why is Pat Buchanan on that panel? He’s waste of space looney. More than my instincts say Joe done good, for once.
You go Joe!

Obama went to Pakistan. He went to Pakistan when American’s weren’t allowed to go.

How did he get in? I don’t know. I think thats a pretty darned good question I should know. How much was spent on clothing for Sarah Palin and her family isn’t something that in the grand scheme of things is important

Does the MSM ever think? I mean really, do the know they are failing us?

northwoodsgal on December 17, 2008 at 3:46 PM

They don’t care if they are failing us. To the MSM, we are nothing but the tools they use to get the socialist government, and power, they want. This is as close to a coup as it gets – though information (or the obvious lack, thereof) is available for those Americans who really care to know, just not in the MSM.

progressoverpeace on December 17, 2008 at 4:22 PM

They don’t care if they are failing us.

I’ll go further than that… they are proud they are failing us, because they think we are dumb as dirt, and they think the fact that they are conning us is the sign of greatness on their part!

Here’s a bit of irony. Sarah Palin is still roasted because she wouldn’t name a paper she reads; therefore she’s “uninformed”. But yet those who get their news from the MSM are among the most uninformed, or rather misinformed, people in the country. That was the point of the Ziegler-Zogby-Wilson Research polling results.

Heh. Excellent point.

progressoverpeace on December 17, 2008 at 9:09 PM

I like Scarborough.

apacalyps on December 18, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Umm…reporters are biased now? WOW! And I just fell off the turnip truck and there isn’t a real Santa and Hillary has fat thighs and a Kennedy is addicted to something…blah blah blah… So what?

sabbott on December 18, 2008 at 5:27 AM

The bloodfest on Morning Joe, over the Blago affair, continues. And then they have a video of Caroline Kennedy running away from the press.

Man, these dems are just all so pathetic. I’ve never seen a party totally implode a few weeks after they won a sweeping election. It’s a non-stop parade of morons and misfits.

progressoverpeace on December 18, 2008 at 6:15 AM
