Terrific: New York Post endorses Caroline for Senate

In which a conservative, Murdoch-owned paper peers into New York City’s talent pool and decides we can’t do better than a relic of Camelot. Disgraceful.
Gov. Paterson would be well-advised to select Kennedy as New York’s next junior senator…
Consider her unusually high profile: As the only surviving child of President John Kennedy, she’d enter the Senate with considerably more political clout than the average freshman…
As a member of Barack Obama’s vice presidential selection committee – and a key early endorser of his candidacy – she remains close to the president-elect. That kind of access and influence surely would prove critical for New York.
Moreover, Kennedy’s selection would be a welcome sign of Paterson’s willingness to reject the politics of pander and special-interest pressures merely to satisfy some ethnic or geographic quota.
Yes indeed, appointing Caroline because she’s a Kennedy is a great leap forward from appointing a qualified woman or minority candidate in the interests of identity politics. As for that “unusually high profile” and the extra clout it supposedly brings, just ask Hillary, who took the job at State partly because she was going nowhere in the Senate despite worldwide fame and 18 million votes in the primary. The one good argument, which I made myself yesterday, is that Caroline’s an Obama crony and can count on quid pro quo from the White House for voting the way The One wants; if that’s how New Yorkers want to play it, trading qualifications for pork, that’s fine, but it’s as near as I can conceive to selling Obama the seat without going the full Blago route. What it really amounts to is an argument for electing pro-Obama celebrities — which is precisely what Caroline is. Says NBC:
On the policy front, the pitch is this: No one else Paterson could appoint will have as much bully pulpit access as Caroline. She may be 100th in seniority when she arrives, but no one will be able to get more reporters to show up to a press conference. On the political front, the pitch is simple: There are two races in two years for this seat, and isn’t it better to appoint someone who can raise the big money necessary to scare off the GOP?
Fair points — both of which could also be made in support of, oh, say, Chris Rock. He’s an Obama supporter, fully capable of financing a campaign, and his pressers would be more entertaining (and probably better attended) than Caroline’s. Rock for Senate!
Word on the street is that Paterson’s warming to the idea of picking Caroline and Hillary’s telling her diehards not to stand in the way, so this travesty really may be in the offing. Exit question: Why would the New York Post, of all papers, jump on the Kennedy bandwagon? Or did I stumble onto the answer in the previous sentence?

So, Palin isn’t qualified, but a woman with absolutely no experience is.
Democrat hypocrisy is amazing.

Serious question: Has Caroline Kennedy ever even had a job?
I’m not thrilled about the other contenders either but at least Andrew Cuomo and Carolyn Maloney have significant records of public service.

eh, she’s no Cuda though.

Chris Rock also has more political experience. He played a black President in a movie comedy five years or so ago. I think that it was called Head of State or something.

Yawn. Probably a politically incorrect time to throw out the word “entitled.”

Yeah, Murdoch wants to sell papers. That is all this really means. They know g-d-well that there are so many more talented people but the worst thing that can happen to the Post is if some Latina from upstate gets the job. No one will care. With Caroline, Murdoch is hoping for people to be interested in Camelot.
Disgusting!

The best thing to say about her is she is harmless.
Can’t say that about cousin Bobby the heroin addict.
Can’t say that about former in-law Andrew Cuomo.
Not like Hillary has done anything with the seat besides run for president.
My name is Kennedy, hand me the crown.

What exactly does a US Senator do?
Look at the other current (and newly elected) US Senators, which one of them can say they are better off than her(accomplishment-wise, intellectually-wise, leadership-wise)?

a steroidal weightlifter turned bad action hero governs our largest state. a really bad comedian might be seated as a US senator. and now a woman with absolutely no experience or training might be sent to washington based on her father’s assasination forty five years ago.
it’s our Camus moment america. this is the best of all possible worlds. just keep telling yourself that.

See, this way when Chelsea eventually runs for something, the Kennedys will have her back. It’s all networking, you know.
And yep – this is about money and access. If it’s a shoe-in, which it is, standing in the way just makes it harder to be invited. It’s all networking, you know.

I am sorry to say this, but I will state the obvious: As horrible and ghastly as JFK’s assassination was (and RFK’s), that bullet in the head was the best thing that ever happened to that family — it sealed their political fortunes. The man was in the White House for about 2 years; he blinked at Russia, blew the Bay of Pigs and got us into Viet Nam, yet to hear many tell it, he was the greatest President ever.
Please.

Had Caroline just been picked out of the blue, it wouldn’t bother me. The reason I’m bothered by the push for her is that it is obvious payback for campaigning for Obama. I mean, talk about the NY Senate seat belonging to the people of Illinois.
MayBee on December 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Ever since this story started all I’ve heard about is how Caroline Kennedy is “unqualified” to be Senator. Do I care whether or not Caroline K becomes Senator of NY? Not really. NY is going to have a liberal disaster there or a liberal disaster. What difference does it make which liberal disaster sits in the seat? Which brings me to my next question, where did everybody get this strange idea that being a Senator actually requires some sort of “experience” or particular “expertise” or “qualification” of any kind? All a Senator does is vote yay or nay, up or down, left or right on some particular piece of legislation. That is if they bother to show up and vote. All that matters to me is a persons basic political philosophy. Are they conservative or liberal? That will be what determines how they vote. Not their “experience” or “expertise” or “qualifications”.
So here’s the bottom line about dear princess Caroline. She’ll be just like everybody else who finds their way to the NY Senate seat. A liberal. So lets have her vote, watch her win because her name is Kennedy and be done with it.
Zetterson on December 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Let’s forget that she’s a Kennedy. After what we’ve been through with the presidential election and the media, WHY IN THE HELL do we give a damn who a newspaper endorses?
I think it should be illegal. On what grounds – not sure. But it should be.
Oink on December 16, 2008 at 12:25 PM

johnnyU on December 16, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Was there some survey I missed that said that the people of New York’s top priority was a lack of interest in government affairs on the part of political reporters? Because having just one Senatrix is not going to hold their attention for very long. The will need a reality show approach were various Senate contestants take turns in front of the camera to avoid being the next one voted off of the Legislature.

Murdoch is a friend of Caroline Kennedy, because she wrote a recommendation for one of his daughters to attend an exclusive private school. From the Politico article:

It appears the Democratic Party is one big corrupt, incestuous family.
This also highlights why the attacks on Sarah Palin were so vicious, and continue: she isn’t one of them and thus isn’t beholden to them.

Kennedy’s involved in Politics = Painful suffering.
The Kennedy curse is REAL. How many of them meeting unfortunate circumstances will it take for these thick headed morons to understand that they need to take their ball and go home.
*special note to democrats.- The Kennedy Mystique is all hogwash. Camelot was 3 years of slow pain for the United States. If JFK had not been murdered, he might not have won re-election. JFK was a deviant like Bill Clinton. Enough with immortalizing dirtbags.

However, they endorsed McCain/Palin.
Caroline must be buddies with Murdoch.
jencab on December 16, 2008 at 12:40 PM
I think AP was implying that Murdoch is a friend of Hillary. And for some reason, Hillary may want this. Certainly, Andrew Cuomo and pere get the short end of the stick–again. Unless Andrew is being groomed to run against Rudy for Patterson’s job.
Illinois has got nothing on us.
JiangxiDad on December 16, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Hilarious, this reads like satire.
For Hillary’s part, I think I get it: she wants a patsy in the job, because she’s going to do the SoS thing for a bit, and see how Obambi is doing. If he falters, she will bail on him, leak ugly things about his performance (”contradictory, ill-advised policies, disjointed communication, etc.”), and then run for Senate against this nitwit in two years.
Then she runs for President against Obambi in the primary.

Like her or not, Hillary was much more qualified than Caroline to run for a Senate seat. She was a high powered lawyer back in Arkansas and like it or not wielded lots of power in the White House. Caroline, on the other hand, has wrote introductions to coffee table books about her parents and attended exclusive soirees benefiting worthy charities.
Illinidiva on December 16, 2008 at 12:42 PM
That’s a good guess. Rush was wondering why in the world Hillary was taking herself out of Pres. contention in ‘12 by accepting SofS. You just answered that question. She doesn’t intend to stay on the job,but gets mucho experience which she can use in a Pres. run.

Yes, that’s what this country needs, more politicians selected on the basis of celebrity and heredity.
Because Congress is already infested with both and they are all doing such a bangup job of it.
The country has truly benefited from successive generations of corrupt and incompetent Kennedys, by all means, less continue the buffoonery by inserting this scatterbrained dingbat into office.

The Democrats know one thing: how to be celebrities. Second thing they know is how to perpetuate the celebrity culture.
It seems to be their entire concept of “work.”

Seems to me the Kennedys rule by Divine Right at this point, along with countless other absolutely worthless legacies.
Old Europe saved a lot of money on elections by just elevating the corrupt/incompetent offspring of corrupt/incompetent rulers to the throne, we could learn much from them.
NoDonkey on December 16, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Well, unlike Chicago and Illinois, where a special election is possible, this is going to be an appointment by Patterson, so looking at the field of credible Democratic Party options, Caroline doesn’t come off so badly.
The plus here — and given the Post’s love of causing trouble, don’t discount this as a factor — is the selection of a Kennedy would really, really piss of Charles Schumer. Remember, Chuckie spent the past six years seething because even though he’s the senior senator (by a big two years) of New York and never met a camera he didn’t want to stand in front of, he was totally overshadowed in the media by Hillary.
With her moving on to the State Department, Schumer was no doubt expecting and wanting Patterson to choose some party hack who would remain in the background and allow Chuckie to finally become the belle of the ball in Washington. Naming a Kennedy to the seat means he’s going to continue to be the afterthought of people when they’re trying to remember who New York’s senators are. Not a major mitigating factor for conservatives, but something for the Post’s editorial board to get a chortle over.

That must have been some great recommendation Murdoch got for his kid, enough to sell his soul to the devil?
Maybe he just admires that her grandfather was a rum runner, conveniently bailed out of the stockmarket right before the crash of ‘29, gave his daughter the gift of a frontal lobectomy and was a a great fan of the Nazis. even FDR had a problem with this guy.
Or maybe he admires the numerous sex scandals, or the way women who get near Kennedys, end up dead, drunk, on drugs or permanently disabled. Or he admires the way they reproduce in numbers because they know they have to keep ahead of the family’s self-destruction curve.
This will be so good for the liberals they can dredge up old Kennedy videos and cry about Camelot. And we will be subjected to endless rounds of sickening words like “America’s royal family,” “Princess” etc. etc.
Amazing what the liberals choose to worship. And just think Marilyn Monroe and Mary Jo won’t even get to vote.
PLEASE NEW YORKERS CALL YOUR GOVERNOR AND TELL HIM NO MORE KENNEDYS.
