Newt to RNC: Yank the Obama/Blago attack ad

Good lord — he’s out-mavericked Maverick. Via Market Watch:
I was saddened to learn that at a time of national trial, when a president-elect is preparing to take office in the midst of the worst financial crisis in over seventy years, that the Republican National Committee is engaged in the sort of negative, attack politics that the voters rejected in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.
The recent web advertisement, “Questions Remain,” is a destructive distraction. Clearly, we should insist that all taped communications regarding the Senate seat should be made public. However, that should be a matter of public policy, not an excuse for political attack.
In a time when America is facing real challenges, Republicans should be working to help the incoming President succeed in meeting them, regardless of his Party.
From now until the inaugural, Republicans should be offering to help the President-elect prepare to take office.
Furthermore, once President Obama takes office, Republicans should be eager to work with him when he is right, and, when he is wrong, offer a better solution, instead of just opposing him.
This is the only way the Republican Party will become known as the “better solutions” party, not just an opposition party. And this is the only way Republicans will ever regain the trust of the voters to return to the majority.
This ad is a terrible signal to be sending about both the goals of the Republican Party in the midst of the nation’s troubled economic times and about whether we have actually learned anything from the defeats of 2006 and 2008.
The RNC should pull the ad down immediately.
Interestingly, he seems as worried that the ad might work and end up kneecapping Obama than that it won’t and will explode in the GOP’s face. No need to fret, if so: The One’s approval rating has been rock steady for the past two weeks, with fully 68 percent confident in his ability to be a good president, near his all-time high. Exit question: Why not just hold the ad back until we know for a fact someone’s done something wrong?

Then we agree on 95% of this discussion, and as Reagan once said “someone who agrees with you 80% of the time is not your enemy”. Peace.
I just don’t think that airing that commercial makes the RNC look like a bunch of asses, necessarily. They could easily have sat on that and bit their collective lips, yes.
Because I am from Chicago, and I am represented by (brace yourself) Durbin, Obama, Blagojevich, Daley, Stroger, Jesse Jackson, Jr., and now whomever the Illinois Dems are going to shove up my rear for Obama’s replacement, I take quite a bit of license when it comes to Obama.
I know him. I know the people who trained him and showed him how a radical leftist could gain traction in a country that hates radical leftists. They are scum, and he is scum, and there are only two kinds of people in this issue: those who get it now, and those who will get it later.
Jaibones on December 17, 2008 at 12:32 AM
OK everyone, Newt knows everything. We should all get behind Obama and help him be successful. If we don’t we will never be known as the Better Solutions party. Regardless of our beliefs. Hey Newt, I have a better solution for you – study up on why the Republicans are no longer in power. THEY DON’T REPRESENT OUR BELIEFS! If you and your buddies don’t get on the bandwagon with true conservatism – you are toast.
I know I am going to sound like a nut, and I would have never believed it possible – but we may seriously see a serious challenge from a third party. I know! It’s impossible right? Will any of you vote for another McCain like candidate again? I won’t.

Oh yay! Another post partisan high road genius who looks down on all of us working to win and promote our ideas. This is not a high school debate Newt. This is about recapturing the ability to direct the future of the republic. Getting along for the sake of getting along is a cute motto for my son’s preschool class but doesn’t work well in a world where so much is on the line.

The great myth is that the campaign is over. Folks, let me send you a bulletin. For Obama and his merry men and women the campaign is never over, never. They are running for re-election now as I write this. Why do think Sarah’s church was burned down? Gingrich, you have gone down in my estimation. White guilt comes in many forms, as there are 8m stories in the Naked City, this has been one of them.

Newt is 100% correct! Until the Republican party starts to develop positive ideas and quits only standing for demonizing the democrats they will continue to lose. Especially when they then select Democrat lite for their candidate for POTUS! Good Grief!
sabbott on December 17, 2008 at 5:22 AM
I doubt the RNC add got much play outside of HA and the rest of the web. I admit that I think it could have been held off for a bit. Newt needs to stop playing referee. If he had advance knowledge of it’s release and his objections were over ruled then he should keep it to himself. If he was unaware until it went public and didn’t like it, he should tell the RNC not the world. It’s hard work being everything to everybody.
Cindy Munford on December 17, 2008 at 5:50 AM
quits only standing for demonizing the democrats…
sabbott
One of the many reasons McCain lost is that he refused to compare and contrast his “supposed” conservative beliefs with Mr. Hopenchangey’s actual leftist philosophy. What you call “demonizing the democrats” is that comparison that must be made. Because McCain was so weak and refused to make those comparisons, the big-eared freak could spend his time running against the evil Bush. No demonization there, right? The left hammered Bush for at least the past six years with lies and innuendo and, guess what, it worked. But you are right about “Democrat lite”. Why should people have voted for the pseudo-Dem when they had the real thing to vote for? They got it. Now we’re all going to get it…right up the…

It doesn’t matter that this guy is really a Chicago political thug, people think he’s black (presidential racial quota) and a Democrat; therefore the rules don’t apply. He has to be the best President ever.
Newt, you’re a fraud.
towerh2o on December 17, 2008 at 7:34 AM
Newt is useless as a LEADER in the Republican Party. 2 years ago at a Republican Congressman’s home for a private fundraiser he announced the idiotic position that the BIAS of the 90% Democrat Media was a fact of life that Republicans had to accept & work around. This shows that Newt like McCain & the Bush Family fail to recognize that the Democrat Party is at WAR with the Republican Party to establish a one party Soviet Amerika with the lies of the 90% Democrat MEDIA their big advantage.
Max47 on December 17, 2008 at 7:39 AM
I have no problem contrasting Conservatives with Liberals! But to state the contrast one must first state the conservative message! This is what the Republicans refuse to do, because Republicans no longer stand for core conservative principles! So…they have resorted to demonizing the opposition exclusively! Then they appoint a member of that opposition as their nominee for POTUS! Someone who voted against the Bush Tax Cuts, Border Security etc! Until Republicans can articulate a true conservative agenda to America they will wander in the wilderness for years to come! Again, Newt is correct in my opinion!
sabbott on December 17, 2008 at 8:04 AM
No, the only way the repub party will regain the trust of voters like me is to return to their Reagan-conservatism roots. But people in Hell will probably get ice water first. Keep on listening to the Newt and McCrazy, and ignore Rush and Sean, just like Colon Powell says. You’ll always be in the minority.
abcurtis on December 17, 2008 at 8:05 AM
I think the time is ripe and I think it is a serious possibility. What we have now is the Socialist Democrats, and Socialist Democrats Lite – the republican party. I’ve been suckered by the Repubs for the last time. The most onerous thing I ever did was pull the trigger for McCrazy.
I’m ready for a viable conservative third party.

Give me a break. “I live in Chicago, I know he’s scum.” Yeah, like you really have any special insight into that. I live in Chicago too. Read the same press as you – and lately, the same press as the rest of the country. You’re allowed to think he’s a scumbag, but don’t pretend you have any special insight into that because you live in Chicago.
Tom_Shipley on December 17, 2008 at 8:11 AM
The faint hope is that the The One’s mental problems, dishonesty and obnoxious nature will lead to tiffs with the almighty media.
However, even if that happens, expect the ‘we must work together’ (help the new gang do what they want), ‘wait for the facts’ (buy the excuse of the executive branch or wait for the story to die), we have better things to do and we just don’t know (the idea that The One knew crooked pols or had no birth certificate or transcripts, etc.) and the best, ‘that is a Republican lie!’ (used on anything to respond to a Republican position or information).
And the BEST: ‘The last administration left such a mess’ and ‘Aren’t we better off now?’.
The sad part is that both the media and the Republican candidates will use these lines. Look at Newt!
Eight more years.
IlikedAUH2O on December 17, 2008 at 8:13 AM
Another reason McCrazy lost, sabbott, is he never showed how he would be better as a president than Obama. McCrazy came into this with the reputation of reaching across the aisle playing paddy-fingers with the liberals, and selling out conservatism when it met his political agenda, and his hatred for evangelical Christians.
If a true conservative ran on the Republican ticket, I believe he will win. Period.

Tom_Shipley — yes if you live in a cesspool you know it and machine politics is no different. You can’t smell, can you?
IlikedAUH2O on December 17, 2008 at 8:15 AM
Sadly, I was right for the umpteenth time (it’s a burden), and in a matter of weeks since winning the election, his corrupt associations and past have already begun to crawl out of their shallow grave.
Geez, Jaibones, for someone who claims to know Obama, you don’t know sh*t. Obama and Blago were not friends. Obama didn’t like Blago. Yes, he endorsed him for governor, but only after his preferred candidate lost in the primary. They are actually kind of rivals. Blago representing the “machine” politics of Chicago, while Obama representing the new “good-gov” group.
The evidence shows that Blago tried to get Obama’s team to pay him to appoint their preferred candidate. Blago is caught on tape cursing them out for giving him “nothing.” Obama named his preferred candidate to the white house staff two days later. None of Obama’s preferred candidates were getting considering as of early Dec. when Blago was focused on Jesse Jr.
So, let me ask you, why should we think less of Obama because of this scandal. The only reason I can see is purely political and I see this line of yours as completely disingenuous:
First let me say that I understand your point, and I largely agree that it would have been best for the country if Obama were allowed to initiate his Presidency without further scandal, and with the reasonable cooperation of both parties.
If you really thought this, you’d be with Newt, because there’s no evidence of wrong doing here and no strong ties between Obama and Blago.
Tom_Shipley on December 17, 2008 at 8:18 AM
Ha Ha Ha — no special insight from living in Chicago. It must be the water!
The One didn’t know about Ayers and Wright.
He didn’t know about Blago or how it is done in Chicago. Or that stuff never happened.
How amny people in the country don’t know about Chicago machine politics? Even before this…. misunderstanding?
Take ignorance and denial to the level of an Olympic sport. Maybe they can make it an event if they get the games there.

Make it simple for impeded Tom…
The One = new politics = Rezko and $2 million gov mortgage on $1 M house
Rezko is a fraud who got caught.
The One has beeen tied to Blago and he ran elections for him.
The One is a crook in addition to everthing else.
IlikedAUH2O on December 17, 2008 at 8:27 AM
I don’t think The One cared enough to bribe Blago. Or it would have happened.
Back to the mystery credit card donations and the new politics, version 23.1
IlikedAUH2O on December 17, 2008 at 8:30 AM
oh c’mon Tom, don’t take us for ignorant fools here. No strong ties between Obama and Blago?
you know, and we know, that Mrs. Blago handled the sweetheart realty deal between Obama and Rezko. Fitzgerald’s gotta be looking into this, and who knows what else???
and of course Obama’s team rejected Blago re: VJarrett; they aren’t as stupid as the Gov (altho’ BO and RE worked for years with Blago’s campaign).
there is a long history of Emmanuel and Obama playing along in the stystem there in Chicago, and yes, there are many of us who hope that the full extent of that is completely brought to the light, as Blago and the Missus begin to deal. We do not believe, as you seem to, that there is nothing to be found.

The thought of Newt being the latest TRAITOR, yes I said TRAITOR to Conservatives and to America’s future is just plain sad… Our party is in taters because no one has the gonads to stand up and be a loud and proud real Conservative and here we have a man who “could” voice great positions that his group has mapped out, instead he has choosen to be a TRAITOR to the very things he has stated in the past he supports. I guess all our so called “leaders” are whimps to Mr Hopenchange… Maybe they also have bought into the Messiah and don’t want to cross swords with a God… Sad, but the way our limp wristed “moderates” are it’s not a surprise anymore. Lack of a TRUE Conservative leader is SO evident! But even here at HAir we have way too many mamby-pamby Republicans who want to go along to get along, glad I’m not that way. I can still look in the mirror in the mornings and see a real American, that loves and is proud of America. Can you Newt?

I have lived in Crook County all my life “I am 40″ and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Now all we need is some republicans with a set of BALLS to take on this scandal and do onto BO as the demacrooks had done to Bush!
The chickens have come home to roost!
time2taketheglovesoffGOP on December 17, 2008 at 9:07 AM
OK, Keemo, let’s have at it.
Give me your evidence of wrong-doing and strong ties between Blago-Obama.
Here’s evidence that they are not close and are in fact very different people and politicians:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/12/12/ST2008121201821.html
I have repeated stated why I don’t believe there’s any wrongdoing on Obama’s fault here and provided evidence to back up that opinion, most recently here. I can get more in depth if you like:
The evidence shows that Blago tried to get Obama’s team to pay him to appoint their preferred candidate. Blago is caught on tape cursing them out for giving him “nothing.” Obama named his preferred candidate to the white house staff two days later. None of Obama’s preferred candidates were getting considering as of early Dec. when Blago was focused on Jesse Jr.
I have stated, most

See, this is what I don’t get. Conservatives are supposed to be about ideals: small government, low taxes, strong defense, etc… Newt is for all of that, I believe. Yet, you – to borrow a phrase – throw him under the bus because he won’t take part in blind partisan attacks? Stand up for what you believe.
We have lost after 6 years in power and 8 years in the WH because we were silent and let the opposition frame the blame.
O’Bama already is caught lying in several press conferences, he refuses to answer to the Chicago Tribune, and the RNC called him on it. With facts and their own video. Truth.
This is tame compared to Democratic hatefest the last 8 years selling outright propaganda with no response. No rebuttal 90% of the time.
Lead. Bring it on. Rebut with facts and truth. Tell Newt and McCain to quit worrying about what the MSM and democrats think. O’Bama is not even inaugurated yet and has gone from ‘no contact’ to ‘no inappropriate contact’.
Please.

“Why can’t we all just get along?”
Neut was a big help in the recent election too
Not to imply the micro brains at the RNC are onto something. Since they are clueless about the opposition, whom they think they can woo with amnesty and RINO juice, and they are clueless about the conservative base, whom they think of as drooling half wit Jesus freaks who need to be removed like roaches, I am clueless why they would attack Obama who represents their vision
Attack ads are always valuable, especially at the moment a corruption scandal breaks but they have to be presented by an entity with some credibility for fighting corruption and a history of honoring the commitments of their own words
I knew Newt was neutered but I hadn’t realize he had done a mind meld with McCain. Neut should run an ad with McCain defending Obama against the Republicans. That will get them Dem invites anytime the conservatives left in Congress try to impede social progress and economic justice.
Get Colin Powell as the spokesman. Bush Sr.too. Got to let the public know what the Reoublicans stand for.

Axelrod said he knew that Obama and Blago were discussing the senate seat. Then the cover up began. That which was KNOWN previously suddenly was known no longer. You’d need the reasoning ability of a People’s Temple koolaid drinker to fall for this cover up and not see any wrong doing.

No, just simple logic.
1. When Obama said he had no personal contact with Blagojevich or his office about the appointment, he knew the Feds had recordings of Blago’s conversations since late October.
2. Obama is not dumb.
3. It does not make sense for him to deny personal contact if he had any knowing that tapes of those conversations most likely existed.
4. It’s more logical that Axelrod was thinking that Obama’s staff had contact with Blagojevich’s staff or was speaking in a generality, the name “Obama” not necessarily meaning the man himself, but his team.

Axelrod never said they had phone discussions. He said they talked regarding the senate seat. And I assure you, if they did talk on the phone, Obama wouldn’t be dumb enough to talk to him on any phone that had a chance of being tapped. He’d be using official Obama team cell phones. Blago probably had Rahm in the room with him and used his phone.

It does not matter what Newt or any of us rubes say! The RNC rules the Republican party and shall do as they please. They choose the message and the messenger! Any of you that don’t get that will continue to be disappointed. Any of you that actually believe you will have a choice in 4 years is dreaming. We already know they have picked our candidate for us. It will be Mitt Romney – the guy that came in 2nd this time. Nothing you do will change this choice! Nothing! Nada! Zilch! Zip! Now that the RNC has made the choice, all they have left is to demonize Obama even more! They have no conservatives on staff so they really don’t disagree with him that much on substance so they must attack on this stuff. Get with the program like Hannity does!
