Blago-Rahma: Unanimous vote for impeachment hearings

Rod Blagojevich had better contact a moving company soon, because Pat Quinn may shortly move into the governor’s mansion soon. The Illinois House voted unanimously to begin impeachment proceedings against Blagojevich, 113-0. His re-election co-chair took a shot at the beleaguered executive, describing his lack of surprise to hear about corruption charges:
The Illinois House launched its first-ever impeachment probe of a governor Monday, promising weeks of hearings detailing Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s alleged abuse of power, from enacting massive programs without legislative approval to seeking to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
But the House also held off on calls to strip the disgraced governor of his power to appoint Obama’s successor, angering Republicans who accused Democrats of a power play aimed at protecting their dominance of state politics.
House lawmakers voted 113-0 to authorize a committee to investigate a host of pay-to-play allegations leveled against the governor, just six days after he was arrested by federal agents at his North Side home. The vote marked the unique circumstance of Democratic lawmakers leading a bid to displace Illinois’ first Democratic governor in a quarter-century.
House Speaker Michael Madigan, though co-chairing Blagojevich’s 2006 re-election bid in a symbol of party unity, has been a top critic of the governor. Asked about the criminal complaint against the governor, Madigan said, “I’ve had an opportunity to know Mr. Blagojevich for over six years so I was not surprised.”
Maybe Illinois voters would be surprised to know Madigan’s lack of surprise. Is Madigan in the habit of supporting corrupt politicians for high office? Wouldn’t the Democratic Party in Illinois have been better served by a principled stand against corruption and a refusal to take part in Blagojevich’s effort, especially considering the way his second term has apparently ended?
Of course, Michael Madigan has other fish to fry. His daughter Lisa serves as Attorney General and has her eyes on Blagojevich’s office, or possibly on the open Senate seat. She tried arguing to the Supreme Court that corruption is a disabling event that can justify removal from office outside of impeachment, which has been greeted with derisive laughter from all quarters. Madigan pere et fille have other agendas than clean government at the moment; they have a dynasty to build.
However, that still makes the inaction on the Senate seat somewhat inexplicable. Either the legislature has to change the law to hold a special election, or it has to temporarily strip Blagojevich of that power and give it to Quinn. Doing nothing leaves Blagojevich with the authority to make the appointment at any time. In fact, Blagojevich could appoint someone today, and apart from Harry Reid’s promise to keep the appointee from taking the seat, nothing could stop Blagojevich.
Best line of the day: “Talk of impeachment is nothing new to the governor.” That says volumes about Blagojevich and politics in the Land of Lincoln.
Update: RNC chair Mike Duncan reacts to Democratic obstruction on special elections:
“It’s extremely disappointing that Democratic leaders in Illinois are ignoring bipartisan calls for a special election to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat. Considering the scandal surrounding Governor Rod Blagojevich’s administration, a special election is the only way to credibly fill the seat. I hope that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan puts good government before partisan politics, and will heed Senator Durbin’s call for a special election.”
They still have time to get it done, but now they’re complaining about the costs of a special election. I guess that seat really is a “f*****g valuable thing” after all.

Illinois ceased being the Land of Lincoln a long time ago. Maybe the Legislature ought to have a vote on changing the license plates to Land of Joliet.

The only motivation for this is that the Dems are terrified that their idiot messiah will be tainted (more than he already is, to anyone with a brain). But, for anyone wanting to throw Blago under the bus, they might find that this piece of road-kill has anti-tire spikes coming out of him.

Blagojevich doesn’t live in the Governor’s mansion. He lives in suburban Chicago. Some days he commutes by jet to Springfield, other days he works out of his office in the Illinois State Office Building in Chicago.

anything to keep it all above the fold for a few weeks. If God has any sense of humor, Rahm’s involvement will become public on the day prior to inauguration.

Illinois politics is dynastic, but only on the Democrat side.
Todd Stroger succeeded his father as cook county chair.
Richard Daley is the second mayor with that name.
Lisa Madigan got into her office on her father’s name, although in fairness she *seems* to be doing a good job at it.
Where are the children of Judy Topinka or Jim Edgar or James Thomspon or even George Ryan? I believe there’s a second generation Hastert somewhere in Kane County (where former speaker Denny Hastert started) but …
What is it about Dems and “keeping it in the family” ?

Tommy_G: That’s right. I remember last year when he kept calling special sessions and ran up about a $100,000 in travel expenses flying back and forth. Oh and he called the special sessions just because he could…he had no business for the senate and house to go over.

Why are liberals suddenly so embarrassed now?

“What is it about Dems and “keeping it in the family” ?”
Just like incest, Dems keep it in the family.
It’s so the tradition of incompetence and corruption can be transferred from one generation of absolutely worthless Democrats to the next. It’s heartwarming, that’s what it is.

The 113-0 vote is purely symbolic. If anyone voted against impeachment, red flags would fly. This is like voting to agree that it’s going to get dark tonight.

Blago is right smack in the middle of Illinois politicians when it comes to honesty and integrity.
If he appoints himself to the U.S. Senate, I would rate him as one of the most ethical Democratic Senators, and probably the smartest.

“If he appoints himself to the U.S. Senate, I would rate him as one of the most ethical Democratic Senators, and probably the smartest.”
Completely agree.
The notion that Blago is any different than any other Illinois Democrat (or national Democrat for that matter), is ridiculous.
Corruption is what Democrat politicians do, it’s why they seek office and it’s the sole reason for their existence.
If Democrat politicians couldn’t steal with both hands from the public trough, they wouldn’t be at all interested in elected office. The salaries are way too paltry.
NoDonkey on December 16, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Are there two more Kennedy’s available for the Illinois governor and senator seats?
We might as well elect shat-for-brains Kennedys across the nation, just so no one state feels left out of having east coast liberal buttheads representing them.

Not sure I agree – Blago tried to maintain the appearance of being less sleazy than most Chicago aldermen – he was also connected at the wallet to the same sleazeballs.
Read Kass on “the combine”. Illinois has a bipartisan corruption problem.

Nah. “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…..”
Pat Q may be a nice guy, never met him, but he’s been around a long, long time – party hack who couldn’t get higher on his own merits. Never did get why Blago picked him for Lt. Gov. PQ would never have made Gov on his own.

Not so much. Baloneyvich refused to move into the Governor’s mansion in Springfield, and has been living in their Chicago north side home for 6 years. Ever the Democrat-environmental-kook, Rod has been flying on State aircraft every day that he needs to be in Springfield.
For six years.
So, no, he doesn’t need to pack the van. Think he wasn’t planning on staying there long?

I’m still wondering when the Daley machine is going to make its way into this whole discussion. One would think, following these developments, that Illinois is dirty but Chicago is clean.
progressoverpeace on December 16, 2008 at 12:17 PM
The Kennedys do run the Merchandise Mart, so there probably is some in Chicago prime for dynastic political appointments.

Some amendments:
Toddler was named the Dem nominee for County Board President in a backroom deal orchestrated by William Beavers, an advisor to his father. Total Crook County move. He has since hired all of his friends, and appointed his cousin CFO of the county. She’s a hack, too. His retarded sister also works for county. My friend is an exec there; she can’t spell her own name, and has no duties.
Richie “da Mare” Daley at least ran for election and re-election on his own. He’s an imbecile, but somehow keeps the various “gimme mine” factions well fed enough to continue supporting his racial spoils system. He’s a mobster with a squeaky little girl’s voice and the intellect of a landscaper.
You’re far too gracious to Princess Lisa Madigan, who’s a socialist Nanny State climber. Mike Madigan, her step-father, has run the state legislature since the Dems took over, and is a classic behind-the-scenes guy. Not an ideological liberal, he’s a partisan power broker.
She’s the ideological liberal, leading a whole host of consumer protection legal assaults on business: guns, tobacco, and excessive licensing regulation across the spectrum of life. She will be replacing Baloneyvich…period. Count on it.
More:
Emil Jones, Obama’s Godfather, is still twisting arms to try and give his State Senate seat to his retarded son. Dan Lipinski replaced his father, William, in the U.S. House. Jesse, Jr. has to be considered a legacy, even though his idiot father has never held a job. Oh, wait – “Shadow Senator”. I almost forgot.

Perfect. You’re the first one I have heard make that point.
Jaibones on December 16, 2008 at 12:31 PM
The glass that was left empty is the real story of Blagogate. When Fitz decided to put an early end to it all, the key deciding issue wasn’t Blago shopping Obama’s seat around. The key was to put an end to Blago’s fishing expedition BEFORE the sale was consumated with Obama, which would have easily bring BOTH Blago AND Obama down. You got to know with Obama’s Chicago roots, if things were allowed to proceed unimpeded between Obama and Blago, Obama would have joined in and consummated the sale.
If Fitzgerald had allowed the Senate Seat For Sale to proceed, he’d be faced with the ethical dilemma of whether to sit on this info forever or bring it forward within the next month or so, like just before or after Obama takes office. How good would it look for Fitz’s future to possibly take down the first black president due to political corruption engaged in BEFORE Obama even gets to office, or minimally drop a huge stink bomb to taint Obama’s first days in office?
Best to tag and bag Blago ASAP and end the story there… Or so Fitz decided…

By Joliet I assume you mean the prison. That facility is closed and used for the tv show Prison Break. But we still have Stateville which, by the way,
my grandfather helped build.
But I rather doubt Blogo will go there. He’ll most likely go to some place with feather beds and cable tv and tea at 4:00.

I still want to know why Lisa Madigan has not been investigating and prosecuting political corruption in Illinois.
