Another pay-for-play scandal in Florida?

Florida Democrats have some embarrassing questions to answer after the Palm Beach Post published the voice mails left by a state legislator linking committee assignments to fundraising. It’s the third pay-for-play scandal for Democrats in a week, after the Blagojevich arrest and the grand jury proceedings in New Mexico. This example at least has some subtlety to it:
The top Democrat in the Florida House considered the amount of money lawmakers gave to the state Democratic Party and their willingness to contribute in the future before he recommended who should sit on some of the state’s most powerful legislative panels.
“There may be three or four people that raised money that had (top) ranking positions, but that was not really a major consideration,” Minority Leader Franklin Sands said Monday. …
But Sands’ top lieutenant, Rep. Geraldine Thompson of Orlando, left several lawmakers cellphone messages, including one obtained by The Palm Beach Post, explicitly describing Sands’ committee recommendations as a reward for top fund-raisers.
“I’m calling members because we have to identify ranking members on various committees,” … “And, um, I wanted to know because we want to take into consideration what kind of financial or other contribution you have made to the Florida Democratic Party and whether you are available to doing that in the future. Would you give me a call?”
Listen to the audio yourself here. It certainly sounds as though the Democrats want to make committee assignments based on personal contributions to the state party. Those monies would normally come from election coffers, not personal money, but either way it amounts to a patronage system of committee assignments.
However, unlike the Blagojevich scandal, Thompson didn’t try raising money for her own personal use. And unlike the allegations in New Mexico, it doesn’t involve the sale of state contracts to donors in exchange for contributions to political campaigns, which is basically a money-laundering system to use taxpayer money to generate cash for the party in power.
This message, while grubby and embarrassing, doesn’t appear to cross the line into corruption or fraud, although it says plenty about the values of the Democratic Party — and of the intelligence of Thompson for leaving a voice-mail message like this. I’d bet dollars to donuts that Thompson gets assigned something less intellectually taxing for the Democratic caucus in the Florida legislature after this.

No, people who give money to campaigns expect something in return? Never heard of such a thing…

Pay for play… Were any contributions to Obama’s campaign in this scheme too? Seems there are some clear violations of FEC rules as well as some unspecifieds to the point of $255 million. When do we get to start asking THESE questions?
From the PUMA-PAC research team that audited the Obama Campaign books:
Paul Alvarez of Naples, Florida donated $6,900 to obama.
Suzanne Amaducci-Adams of Palm Beach gave $8,900.
Kimberly Boldt of Boca Raton pitched in $9,200.
Anthony Edwards, the actor whose character “Goose” killed himself in “Top Gun,” gave $4,997.
Walter Byrd of Miami loved obama so much he gave $5,100.
Too bad the limit is $4,600, but hey the rules are different for obama right?
The FECK Team pored over more than 2,000,000 (yes, 2 MILLION) records of donations from all 50 states to the obama campaign. There are thousands and thousands of over-the-limit donations.
There are $255 MILLION dollars worth of donations from unnamed sources. How many over-the-limit or illegal donations are included in that $255 MILLION DOLLARS?
There is also $166 MILLION dollars in unaccounted for donations. That’s $166 MILLION dollars that simply DO NOT APPEAR on any of the records from individual states. So,
WHERE DID THE MONEY COME FROM? Was it from other PAC’s? (obama claims to not accept money from PAC’s) Was it from overseas? Was it simply not reported to the FEC?

You’re on. Prove it. 8 years of 24-7 Bush bashing and investigations and “Diebold voting” thefts and they never found one, ONE instance of this sort of thing.
So I’m inclined to say, no they don’t.

The only Democrats who haven’t been convicted of corruption, just haven’t been caught yet.
The Democrat Party’s reason for being is corrupt and thievery. There is no possible way the Democrats would ever tolerate a Democrat politician who didn’t steal with both hands, it would frighten the rest of them.
NoDonkey on December 16, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Of course. To a Democrat every thing has a “f%$%ing” value.
Note: there has been so much of this “f%$%ing” going on lately within the Democratic party that somebody ought to be considering a sex tax.

It’s corrupt alright, just maybe not to the point of illegality.

Three’s a charm:
1. Illinois – Blagojevich
2. New Mexico – Richardson
3. Florida
The post-election phase turne out way more fun than I thought it could be, were it not at the expense, literally, of my country, and her children. Kleptomaniacs are our ‘leaders’.
The fools are us.

When I was a kid, the priest at our local church would check the books to see how much you’d given before giving you the date you wanted before a wedding/baptism/&c. My mother was so incensed when he tried this before my brother’s wedding (actually bumping us for bigger contributors), that she switched out parish and gave the local bishop a piece of her mind.
That little German woman was tough.

Well I guess that is better then the Democrat lawmakers who take bribes from strangers. I mean at least the “pay for play” types are keeping it in the family.

Have the residents of these states given up their rights to elect their government representatives? This whole country is just one big political board game.

Always remember that to a Democrat all that is important is your wallet.
With this Messiah-elect

This is a reach at best. Republicans do this just as much as Democrats. It is a big problem with the system but it happens and really, is not that big a deal. If we want to nail the Blagos and Richardsons (and Emanuels) of the world we need to avoid jumping on trivial issues like this one.
This dummy was just stupid enough to leave a voicemail.
grdred944 on December 16, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Its shocking I say!
The quality of corruption in this country has reached new lows. All this stuff of late is minor league game play not worthy of a Governor or Senate position. Were LBJ alive he would knock a few heads together. The ole man would have started the bidding on Obama’s seat at around $2m all to be
paid off in some deal for a stretch of interstate to be let later.
Dr. Dog on December 16, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Because they are lazy and do not want to work for it. Why work for it when I can tax you out of yours? Kinda like the free-milk-and-cows story.
On a different topic: If more parents taught their daughters the free-milk-and-cows story we’d all be better off.
Bubba Redneck on December 16, 2008 at 3:58 PM
I predict in Barack America’s Kenyan nation, pay to play is going to become the way. Isn’t that how they do it in third world countries, like the junta in Indonesia, and the phony Kenya Democracy/Communism power sharing fiasco?
tarpon on December 16, 2008 at 4:16 PM
The unspoken assumption in those voice mail messages is that the generous contributors will be able to turn those committee positions into personal profit in order to pay back their contribution, plus interest. It’s exactly that kind of power/profit equation that turns government, the way the Democratic party runs it, into the cesspool of corruption it is today.
Socratease on December 16, 2008 at 4:19 PM
The pay for play thing is huge, I just did some reading on David Rubin, he is the boss at CDR, the company at the heart of Richardson scandal. IN addition to other things including working with Freddie Mac, he was also on freaking Ed Rendell’s transition team when he became governor. This guys all over the place. I don’t know about the Florida story, but the Richardson is just the tip of the iceberg for the other pay for play scandal.

…unlike Deep Throat, I wouldn’t counsel to “follow the money” nowadays….
…I’d recommend that we “follow the morons”…they’ll leave self-incriminating voicemail messages…they’ll lay their whole venal scheme out on an open line they know must be monitored by some ethics or criminal justice agency…or they may just get caught with hundreds of thousands of ill-gotten spondulicks in their freezer….
…they’ll never really get prosecuted…hey! They’re in charge now, right?…

“I’d bet dollars to donuts that Thompson gets assigned something less intellectually taxing for the Democratic caucus in the Florida legislature after this.”
Maybe, but I bet it wont change the practice.
I am getting sick of political money raising crap. I wish we could nominate committee membership based on merit. Nominate the most knowledgeable in a particular field to be on that committee, not rank the various committees by prestige and doll out assignments according to contribution amounts. That pretty much guarantees you aren’t going to get any serious know-how on any of those committees.
Fund raising is important but it shouldn’t be the diving force of governing.
